    Wanted to say 2 things - 1) that is not the “cliche” jazz sound, that is how guys who play rock set their tone when they think they are playing jazz. You don’t have to go to Martin Taylor for an example of a non rolled off tone pot for jazz guys, almost all of the classic jazz heroes had pretty bright sounds. Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Tal Farlow, etc. etc. usually the first thing newcomers to jazz guitar are told for some reason is “roll off the tone to get a jazz sound” and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I just wanted to mention that in case someone is watching this and happens to see the comment - don’t roll your tone all the way down because of the incorrect stereotype that that is what jazz players do. 2) Thanks for doing this review. Even if you don’t have jazz players on your payroll doing videos it is still really nice to see an effort being made and these guys did a good job presenting the products. Also nice is that the es-175 doesn’t have 10s on it so we are getting a real representation of the tone with .012s or whatever are on there with the wound 3rd string. I love watching your videos and more of this kind of content would be awesome :)

      In response to 1)…this is literally what Mick talks about around 12mins in. He even turns the treble up! That said, plenty of jazz maestros use the smothered by a pillow tone too eg Metheny/ Martino

      How true. I love the brighter sounds of the vintage players. Barry Galbraith's sound on many albums, like his "guitar and the wind", Grant Green as you mentioned could be quite bright, Tal, Kenny etc. George Barnes, too. Nice and bright. Big strings, though for the most part. Open tone and big strings is a certain sound that you can't really fake with the tone rolled back and lighter strings, to a large degree.

    Glad you guys are enjoying these new videos. Mick & Peter are great together & hopefully we'll be putting 1 video a week up from them - their show is focused on more boutique products. I'm trying to get an acoustic show organised asap, but we have a bass show organised that will start early Sept, plus the Top Shelf, Sounds LIke, Captain meets etc etc - should be plenty of stuff for you to enjoy!! Oh yeah, and there are those other two that you can see on Chappers Channel every week ;)

    I can’t believe how loud the little jazz can get. Big sound. Doesn’t sounds tinny or boxy at all . Sounds acoustic, mellow smooth and bassey. I was contemplating getting the 12 but this has everything I need. Jazz,blues, Johnny cash anything introspective, sentimental and acoustic sounds great on it. Katana can’t do what this can do . I use hollow archtop. The fan noise ? It’s barely noticeable. Does it make hiss noise? No is it worth the money ? Yes

    I've played both of these amps and was pleasantly surprised how good they sound. I almost bought the 1x12. But, then I tried the 1x8 and I thot what a great couch jamming amp. Well, time has gone buy without a purchase. But, I'm now tempted to get the 1x8. By the way, the digital reverb sounds amazing.

    Nice Video. I bought the Little Jazz 12 because I wanted a light amp for jams. It is now my main amp. I thought it to be a bit....muddied, but it works great within a bandmix and actually better than my tube amp with crispy treble. I'm not feeding an Angry Charly, but a Hudson Dual Broadcast and a DOD Carcosa Fuzz and it sounds lovely.

    The smaller of these amps is amazing. I've used one at home for some months and the sound is great whether playing archtop, semi-hollow or a solid. Really versatile and unbelievably small for such quality and output.

    I remember last years movember show on Guitarist where Mick put a lot of effort for the success of the show and to raise a good amount for the cause but sadly his work didnt quite well pay off and i kinda felt sad for him. But now seeing him more frequently here at Andertons makes me really happy...he really deserves all the good that is yet to come. Great show all in all and also im glad that Danish Pete is the man whom i had in my mind cuz i thougth i had him confused with someone else :D

      Don't feel sad! It was a lot of effort,yes, but we raised over £1,500 for the charity so it wasn't a total loss. And we made some cool videos in the process.

  • @DanielleMuscato
    @DanielleMuscato 8 років тому +2

    Hey you mentioned in the video that these amps are 40 watts (solid state). They are actually rated at 50 watts RMS at 8 ohms. It also has another speaker output so you can run it into another cab, and it can run SIXTY watts RMS at 4 ohms if you do it that way. The amp guts are exactly the same for both the Little Jazz 1x8 and the Jazz 12 (1x12). The enclosure design and loudspeaker are obviously different.
    Also, I just wanted to say, I'm a jazz/fusion player and I use the Little Jazz for cleans and a JHS Sweet Tea for fusion leads. The Sweet Tea is a dual drive pedal with a TS808 circuit on one side and the JHS Angry Charlie circuit on the other side. I use a custom made chambered two-humbucker guitar, so the rig on the left is pretty much the EXACT same setup that I actually myself. It sounds FANTASTIC and you guys represented it well except for a few tech specs that were off as mentioned.
    I would also point out that the weight on these is ridiculous. The 1x8 combo on the left is 15.2 pounds.

    • @DanielleMuscato
      @DanielleMuscato 7 років тому +1

      Small gigs, sure! They are surprisingly loud for their size. If you are playing with a loud drummer, just throw a mic on it, or it has an XLR direct out as well.

    Just got a DV mark jazz 12. Best ja
    zz amp ever. I plugged in a simi, hollow and solid body and they all sound great. One thing I noticed is the cabs have all wood and no metal. The preamp is covered by wood. The thing weighs 22 lbs. no hand truck needed. The sound fills up the whole room and surrounds the ear. Incredible.

      +Elliot Grey Its just a transition thing - there are about 12 Chappers videos (some up & some still to come) that were shot when we 1st moved in to the new place & had some teething problems. These are all ironed out now, so over the next 3-4 weeks you'll start to see all the Chappers videos come up to the same standard as these ones.

    Picked up a used DV Jazz 8 and it is a great little home amp for any room. Run a compressor in front of it and it can be pretty amazing even with the tiny little 8” speaker. I will set all frequencies at 5 and love the tone. I find it much quieter than any of my tube amps and do not notice the fan noise. Now I still love a Fender Twin to be honest.

    Thanks gents for these very informative videos. I think considering where jazz is going nowadays we can find ourselves a bit out sorts. On one hand we need clarity, and something that would amplify are guitars as they are. The other side of things is that we also enjoy the pedals just as much as our rocker counterparts and it is very difficult to find a situation in which the clean tone nor the drive sounds are sacrificed. That’s just my five cents. These amps seem quite nice and affordable.

  • @OzziePete1
    @OzziePete1 9 років тому +3

    If you are striving for good clean tones and the real sound of the guitar, just amplified modestly, a solid state amp is probably better than a tube amp.
    The tubes do colour the sound & if you do not want that, it can be a hindrance.
    Plus the weight of a tube amp is significantly worse than a solid state amp, which helps if you are working in various places lugging your own gear.

    I think about buying a Little Jazz for home recording. Still not sure about 8' speaker, if it can bring enough depth and width into the sound of my solidbody Framus. On the other hand, I've read somewhere that in some cases for recording smaller speaker is better.
    But thanks for this overview anyway! Sounds cool :)

    I'm almost sure Roy Buchanan played some simple solid state Fender amps back in the days. I mean no digital fiddly-diddly gimmicks, just straight solid state amplification. I'm still hoping for a comeback of this type of amps. Probably some companies still make these. Orange?

    • @johnbuell8035
      @johnbuell8035 5 років тому

      Roy Buchanan favoured a Fender Vibrolux, a 2 x 6L6 tube amp. His tone and whole playing style are really about driving a tube amp. He wanted the amp running flat out and typically faced the amp backwards to cut down some of the volume and beamy top end. All of this really indicates that he would not have chosen to use a solid state amp.

    Just found this review now and thought of a few points that were brought up on this that doesn’t make sense in a jazz setting. Jazz players don’t tend to use tube amps as it is harder to tame them and still be loud. The other point is I can’t really think of a jazz player that rolls their tone nob all the way down the only player I can think of who had that sort of sound is Wes Montgomery and that’s because he played with his thumb , my other point is why pitch something as a jazz amp and then not bring a jazz player in to showcase it instead you bring in someone who is mostly a blues player who clearly knew nothing about jazz tone, I’m sure there are a lot of jazz players in the UK who would be up for doing this sort of thing

      Mick Taylor I would like to see it with a '59 Bassman since that's the amp it's based on. Hot Rod Deluxes and Blues Deluxes don't sound anything like a Bassman. People will attribute the differences they're hearing to the Blues Cube being solid-state which is unfair. The Blues Cube against a Bassman would be a much more fair comparison since you can hear it side-by-side with what it's actually trying to do.

      If you're talking about the ES175, they can be had easily for half that price, and rarely in the 2.5k range. The amps however, the 12' is like 900 bucks.

    • @benradford847

      900? it's 350 to 400 quid depending on where you go ($450 to $520ish). and there's even a 2x12 version for upwards of 500 Pounds ($650) :)

      Ben Radford yeah but I'm an aussie so I'm not thinking in terms of quid. It's 900 for me but yeah, 450 p sounds right on the money.

      Hi Doug, I left Guitarist/Future in 2013. After nearly 16 years doing guitar magazines I was kinda bored and wanted to work for myself. So I left and started my own business, part of which is working with Andertons both in front of, and behind the camera in terms of production. I wish there was a more exciting story that I got fired or something, but I just left because I wanted to move on. As for Chris, he got offered an editorship so he took the opportunity. I still work with Guitarist and Total Guitar from time to time - great friends there. Cheers, Mick

    Question. If they both have the same electronics, does the 12 sound louder than the Little Jazz? Any other tone differences?

      I did some research. Newer models still have the fan, but built inside. People say it's a lot quieter.
