This episode did motivate me. I have watched it three times now. I even went to my local music store secretly hoping that Ibanez AF95 was there to take a look at (the model that is featured in this video). One day.
Wish I had that kind of information when I started out. This is a really great, helpful introductory video. And I learnt something new too. Cool vid, Sandra!
I have an AF95FM and she's a sweetheart. I love the ebony fretboard. Plays smooth. I have it strung with D'Addario EXL110W strings. This set had a wound 'G' string which helps give it the jazz tone that a plain 'G' string doesn't. I looked at the GB model but I wasn't sure about the walnut fretboard. I stick with a lighter string because I'm 72 years old and just don't have the strength I used to have. I also mostly use a 20+ year old Peavey amp that does ok for what I need it for. I also use Dunlop Tortex .73mm teardrop picks when I'm not playing finger style.
Cool! Same here. I have an Ibanez AF95 Dark Amber, and an AKJV90D, and I'm using a Peavey Stereo Chorus 212. My pick is a Dunlop Jazz Tones Round Tip. Pat Metheny all the way up!
@@HenriquedePaulaNascimento Nice rig. My first jazz box was a 1990 pre Fender Guild X-500 made in Westerly RI. It was $4000.00 new. Sadly I had to sell it. One cool thing was, it had the standard controls plus a master volume. That was cool because I could set each pickup volume and tone then control the overall volume with the master. It also was a big guitar with a 17" lower bout and 4" thickness. It truly was my fat bottom girl.
After doing much research, this video has helped greatly with my decision regard a jazz guitar purchase. I already have a '70s JC 120 and I am pretty sure I'd like one of those AF95 guitars. I really like the one in the video. I do have the skill set to build a nice jazz box but for 700 bucks it looks and sounds like i cant go wrong. Thank you so much for this video Sandra!
Very nice Sandra! I noticed your note that the Epiphone had a loud acoustic sound, which is something i noticed as well, and was a selling point for me when i bought my Epi Joe Pass for my first archtop. It had by far the best unamplified sound of anything i tried. I use it as a backup these days.
Thank you Sandra. You're doing such a great service to the jazz community. I just did a day trip to Salzburg from Munich and thought of you and wish you and your family well.
Thank you! ❤️ Last time I was in Salzburg there were so many tourists taking pictures with large iPads. It was funny af, but tedious to mingle with people.
For a great little cheap Fender style 10 inch combo, check out the Behringer HA-40R. It is 40 watt and has a real spring reverb. You can get a great jazz tone, especially if you use warm low output humbucker. In addition to using the clean channel, I like to use the gain channel with just a low amount of gain to fatten up the sound. For a super budget rig, you can use the DemonFX CR Compressor too.
Thank you for the guitar choice example. They are different than your choices 6-7 years ago. I'm still using my Sheridan II PRO but am going to try others as you have recommended. O' 12' Guage costing a bit muck un the US. Thanks Again!
Sure thing! I love my D'Angelico Mini dC deluxe and play it every day. It helped me through my shoulder problems, while yet provkding a good jazz sound.
About the Epiphone Broadway, the combination of a 25.5" scale length and a nut width of 1.6875", isn't that a problem for thick vingers. If you're looking for more space for the fingers between the strings wouldn't a 1.75" nut width with 25,5" scale length be an better option? 😅 Is there a special reason they combine 25.5 scale length with an 1.6875" nut width Sandra?
43mm is the standard nut width. There arent6too many guitars with a broader one. Check ojt Eastman guitars. They have 44mm and 25" scale length. That's maybe a happy medium. for me it's too large.
Very good. In the USA I'll put in a plug for the String Joy company. I use their nickel wound Broadway series which has a warmer sound. They make a 10.5 E string which I like to split the difference. You can made up a custom guage set easily. They haven't gotten to making half and flat wounds as of 2024. I also really like their "jazz picks" which have a nice feel and sound. BTW: I have moved on to a Comins semi acoustic guitar but I still have my a75. I should give it some love more often!
Great video and really nice playing too. I have an Ibanez AF 75 which I love but changed the pick ups to an old pair of Gibson PAF Humbuckers which I acquired; is that a good mod does anybody think? ps I still have the Ibanez pickups if I wanted to change them back.
Thanks you for this - very helpful! In one of your videos you mentioned that you used wireless hookups because you didn't like cords - Are there particular wireless systems you recommend?
Line 6 is my favorite, although I use the Sennheiser for my videos. The Line 6 is the easiest to use and has the silent plug function which is so handy (mutes sound when you plug in or out). Also has the longest battery life. Sennheiser is a bit more stable and has the angled plug, that looks better on videos.
great video! i have the ibenez 75 and love it. theb pups are a little bright. thinking about replacing them. any suggestions? also, do any of the books you showed include tabs?
Try the Seymour Duncan Antiquity (but they are expensive!) for a darker sound. No, a Realbook never has tab in it, because its6made for all C Iinstruments, not specifically for guitar! Also as a jazzer you should really learn to read sheet music 😊.
I filmed it already, but forglt to shoot an important take (the chord melody performance of all things 😂) and had to return it, beforw I realized 🙈. Now I have to find someone to lend me the guitar for that last take.
Our young players are so important, and this video WILL get folks started with all the info necessary to dive in with a comfortable (and affordable!) setup that will make them want to practice and learn! My first guitar came from Woolworth’s in the early 60’s. The strings were a half inch off the fretboard, no intonation. $50. With an amp! Get what ya pay for. But, I stuck with it and got a decent guitar within a year, and what a huge difference that made for my desire to play. You are the Jazz Simplifier, Sandra - in more ways than one!😁 Excellent information here!
Yes. Did I say it's a semi hollow? Did the video a few months ago and can't remember, but I knos its a full hollow body. I even have a dediacted video of it, where I say its a full hollow body. So I'd be surprised if I claimed it were a semi acoustic. I think I just added it to the small guitar section, instead of the archtops. Sorry for the confusion.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman it’s just that you introduced the guitar in the part dedicated to semi-hollows. That might confuse people. Not a problem, it’s an excellent line up you showed.

The Sheridan is a great guitar!
Thank you very much, this was very helpful. The D'Angelico sounds sublime. It's a shame there are no budget options out there with just a neck pickup.
True. I guess D'Angelico sees them more as Jazz + Allround guitars. And they are actually great in other genres too.
Thanks Sandra, this is great not only for beginners but also for anyone to keep up on what is out there.
Or if one's on a budget 😊
I’m on a Christmas 🎄 gig right now playing an Ibanez AG75GBS! 😊

Yes, it's a great guitar, but needs a little fret polishing.
I won't go for pure jazz tones, i like some of them modern jazz tones= chorus, distortion delays reverbs etc
Most Es-335 guitars do that. For amp check out the Quilter amps. From jazz to overdrive, they do it all.
Another accessory you failed to mention was a good guitar cable to plug your guitar into the amplifier or wireless unit
Well, I didn't exactly "fail to mention" that, bc I don't think a cable is something specific to jazz. While the guitar, amp and string choices are.
