Hey Group,
We’re filming once more as Spring gears up! We are working on loads of primitive vids that I’m excited about... but this quick vid on oranges will have to do for a bit longer as we get back into the swing of things. Get ready for some amazing stuff this year!
Any input on the integration of music into the vids would be welcome. A survival lesson on Oranges is unlikely to go far, so we thought we’d give it a try. Tell us what you think and if you haven’t already, check out and subscribe to our side channel:Barely Survival for more!
I'm just a kid ,just to let u know Bob and I was wondering if you could make a vid about making cool foods and stuff like that so yah also that is not me in that pic for the comments just to let you know
To Bob sorry
Not Bob and I my bad
Video uploaded 1h ago, Premiere 2h ago, and this comment was written 3h ago... Hell yea thats the kind of time mix I expect from UA-cam : )
Thanks for the video, I love watching your videos, they help me calming down and remember, that there arent only asholes in the world
@@BreezyGoLucky he made a bacon wrapped snake. I think that's super cool
After the outbrake of the Civil War an american by the name of Melville Bagley emigrated to Argentina and found bitter orange trees everywhere. The trees were used ornamentally because there was no use for the oranges as they were too bitter. Bagley found a way to brew an alcoholic beverage out of them which he named "Hesperidina". That invention made him a millionaire and to this day his company still exists and it's huge.
Im argentinian and never heard about it. Lol. Thx for the data
If they are too sour, try making marmalade out of them, you could cook the pulp and the orange part of the rind (don't use the pithy white stuff, that's where most of the bitterness is) with some wild honey and see what happens. If you have any wild apples or crabapples around toss them in too (without the seeds). They are full of pectin and will help it to gel.
The bonus nutritionally is that; the tarter the citrus the higher the vitamin C. Vitamin C is what makes citrus fruits taste sour.
Use a grater to remove and save the orange "zest" part of the rind before discarding the white part. That'll make America grate again.
(OK, everybody, 1 - 2 - 3, groan.)
@@notmyworld44 well, "orange" you funny.😫
😉Good suggestion by the way. 👍
Are you a doctor or a scientist? That is smart. My teacher might not no that.
No, I'm not a Dr. or a scientist, I'm just someone who has been studying nutrition and diet for several decades, to help alleviate health issues I and my family deal with.
Just got back from Seville where they have similar orange trees which also make wonderful marmalade. They also were good squeezed fresh in whiskey sours or (bitter) margaritas.
Glad to see you back. Looking forward to all of your content!
Same here. Everything is warming and turning green. Going to be some awesome adventures.
Seville orangeade. 1/1-2 qt 10 -12. bitter oranges. lrg lemon and 1 C sugar 5 cups. cold. water. ----thin slice oranges. add sugar. mash till juiced. add water. sqeeze lemon. ad. add. strain and press juice and serve.
Watching your videos is like spending good times with an old friend.
Keep it up!
The bitter orange might make a good juice to drizzle on fish or crawdads. Juice might be Ok fermented too, but not a drinker here.
Make jelly or preserves. Could also eat with wild honey.
Hey, GREAT IDEA! I bet those bitter oranges would make an awesome marmalade!
I have heard that the best oranges for marmalade are sour, so these could well be a marmalade variety of orange.
I wonder if the rind is edible at all. And it may be usable in the Verjuice sense, as a souring agent in cooking or pickling. I just put up a jar of eggplant pickle, usually it calls for limes to be added, I added cranberries which are common here but I am sure that adding these to a pickle could be interesting as well.
HELL YEA YOU BACK IN BUSINESS. BRING IT ON BRO WE ALL WAITED FOR THIS
Awesome! Glad to have you back!
I hope u know that I sit on my phone and wait for u to upload a new video😂😂
You shouldn't sit on your phone. Just saying .
I was trying to prove my point
I don’t actually just sit on my phone
He was joking dude
Mythology Geek woosh
@@Wth969 Reverse woosh to you 😂
The way you described the dry taste of that, is what I would describe chokecherries as. They make great jelly and even better hooch. Maybe that'd work with your oranges... The other thing that comes to mind is homemade vinegar. Citrus vinegar is great for cleaning with, and gets rid of infection if you have a small wound. Heck, you have nothing to lose by experimenting!
Watching your videos is so soothing. All I feel is positivity.
When that man spits out the food and says NO! You know it's real bad 😂😂😂
Smh. Those oranges look so delicious. They're just natures troll lol. Great video :)
Never eat food that is not Huck-approved. Huck is wiser than us.
good to see you still surviving sir..keep on keeping on
I came for that chilled dog.
Hi Bob , I think that the orange juice could be used in a marinade with the wild red peppers and maybe a few other wild seasonings , with snake or even wild boar . The juice could also be mixed with water to help kill bacteria . Thanks for all the interesting videos !!
Don't mix the juice with water to "help kill bacteria".
@@blueferral3414 , yes regular juice would not work , but this is much stronger , my great uncle told me that when he fought in the Pacific in WWII they would use lemon juice to purify their water , I'm sure it's not the best way to do it but it would taste better then trying to drink the hole juice .
@@TonyErvolina Maybe instead of using the juice to purify, use it as a flavoring to water that has already been boiled, to give it a better taste. That way you know for sure your water is safe. Appreciate your great uncle fighting for our country! My Papa fought in WWII as well, did his training in Hawaii and fought in Okinawa. God bless!
Glad to see you're well enough to make videos again, glad to have ya back, Bob!
Time to time I check back nice to see u still around .
God bless brother .
Just bought a few of your survival cards, I cant wait to get em.
Hey, Bob! Great to see you and Huck back on screen. We sure do look forward to seeing more. We are big fans of your instructionals.
My husband and I watch your videos every day; and its normally the last video we watch at night! Thank you so much for all the amazing content !! :)
Great to see you back, Bob! Many blessings to you and yours.
Amazing how different the seasons are down there. North Utah its still basically winter. just the most hardy stuff poking its head up above soil.
Glad to see y'all back and happy you're well. Can't wait for the new videos!
Nice to see you show that firesteel technique, you make it look so easy.
Good to see you back, much love.
Thanks Bob. Never heard of cooking oranges that way, but glad to see what happens! Can't wait for more videos. This is the first notification I've ever got from you!
Glad to see you’re up and around, buddy. Enjoyed the video as always!
I am in Florida so I never heard of an ornamental orange. We grow the real stuff but if you’re unlucky to have your tree freeze or something and it dies you might end up with the hardy root stock it was grafted on. Most of those are a sour orange and I have made delicious marmalade with them. I guess you could eat them in the wild.
Florida gang
I'm in Florida too and yes we have them. And they are usually caused liked you said. The root stock ! I found a beautiful one when I was out exploring the woods. It was beautiful and the fruit looked great but SOUR ! Yuck !
My grandma would squeeze the juice out, they're very juicy, and made bitter orangeade sweetened with sugar! Depending on what she had on hand, sometimes she added vanilla and sometimes she would boil water and let cinnamon sticks steep in it and mix the cinnamon water in making a totally different tasting drink to that bitter orange! It was so refreshing to us kids! Of course anything grandma made or cooked was so delicious! She knew how to make a delicious drink out of Cinnamon and anise seed with sugar and sometimes she flavor 'horchata' or hot chocolate especially during the cold holidays!
I'm a city boy from the Southside of Chicago, but I'm absolutely hooked on your videos. I daydream about doing cool stuff out in nature like this. Be safe out there. I wish you wellness and good health, my friend.
That sandstone outcrop is part of the old ancient San dunes ... very cool !
Nice to see this with some nice Zep accompaniment
Brother Bob! The new gear makes a nice difference. The wife and I cannot wait to see all of the new content!
Huck always has that look on his face like "I am not having ANY of your shit." I'm amazed at how much he refuses to eat. The bitter oranges are not surprising but Crawfish for instance. My dog loves crawfish. She begs for them whenever I have them, and she gets excited whenever I bring home live ones. She would never refuse to eat meat of any kind.
Great to see you back Bob! Looking forward to the new uploads I enjoy all your content!
I'm glad to see a new video from you Bob, I always learn something new.
It would be interesting to try with eating Synsepalum dulcificum (miracle berry) first. I've eaten one before eating a lime and it was like candy afterwards.
synse... Smart aleck!
it's good to see you up and running brother
Hello from Colorado! Glad to see you are back! Always a pleasure watching your videos and learning about your side of the blue marble.
The citrus good to marinate snake, lizards and of course put some dirt outside orange take everything inside off,now you can have mini pot to cook on fire.
Glad to see you back!!!
Hi Bob so happy to see you well and alive, I learn so much from you and your family, and again your dog is me favorite, makes me laugh up a storm! I am new to you and when I saw your snake dinner I was hooked! Please keep up the wonderful work that you do 🙂!
Maybe make a cooked fruit cocktail with those and a few prickly pear fruits? Cooked in a pot?
Woot, glad you're back and feeling better. Can't wait for more videos, stay safe my friend.
Make a mojo marinade for pork or chicken or fish you could also make homemade vinegar or jelly or even use the skins for zest
+1 for the mojo marinade idea, just need to add some garlic, onion (both finely chopped or minced if you will), oregano and s/p and ya got yourself a nice marinade.
@@jpender3181 you can also add other citrus lemon lime orange grapefruit whatever you like for citrus I buy sour oranges from the store it cost me $0.79
We just absolutely love your videos!
Love your videos! Only found your channel recently, but I went back and watched most of your past videos in short order. I always love when Huck gives the hard pass!
Always an enjoyment! Subscribed for over two years!
Good to see you back at it!
Good to have you back. Look forward to more videos, Thanks for the advice on west Texas.
Bob, it really is Great to see you back out in the bush and filming videos again. Missed seeing 'Ol Huckleberry. I hope your vision problems are behind you and your sight continues improving . As for those Horrible Bitter Oranges, I have a client here in SoCal who has one of these trees. The fruit looks great and even smells OK when cut, but one bite and you would think it was Soaked In Kerosene . Best Wishes, Robert
I love your set up and how you do your videos!
good to see your back on ..
Hey Bob, awsome to see you out and about, and thanks for making a video !!! Hope you guy's are doing ok. Cheers from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Will be on the look-out for more videos from you. A huge fan, Rick.
I saw on a cooking show called Mexico One Plate at a Time with chef Rick Bayless he used the juice as part of the marinade for Pork using whole shoulder and put in a large pan using banana leaves to wrap the meat. hHe mixed the juice with achiote paste added a little water and baked it in a pit but you can do it in a oven.He used the meat to make tacos.
That place looks beautiful
Also love the snake trapping videos with the minnow traps 💙
Glad to see you out in the wilderness again. Stay safe my friend
Good to see you again.
That survival card looks awesome
You could make some bitter orange candies. Cut them in to chunks and boil them in sugar syrup until it condenses down then leave them to cool until it crystallizes.
Towards the end I was hearing some wild turkeys. I am excited for Turkey season to start!
Love the video... Bob's looking good. God bless Ya'll & keep the videos coming.
well I haven't been able to stay up with your videos like I wished I could but hey I have not stoped praying for you and the family and yes that includes Huck lol.. good to see you getting around and dominating the awesome outdoors.
Nice to. See you back BOB!!!!! Missed you tons~…~… God speed🤗🙏
My grandma used to make a pie similar to a lemon meringue pie out of those oranges, very tart, pucker up and enjoy !
That place looks amazing!!
Here for the premiere, good job Bob, I hope you have a wonderful spring and get to spread your knowledge to the world with your videos. Representing 804 woo!
This’ll be a big year. Will be shooting vids and helping out at scout camps through the summer.
@@BobHansler: Wonderful Bob. GOD BLESS YOU in everything you do!
Maybe use them as lime/lemon substitutes or find someone that has a nice citrus tree in you area and take scions and graft the good variety on to them.
The title to this should have been "Huck Snubs Orange" Lol!! His reaction was indeed priceless! God bless you all! What a blessing it is to see you back out there!
Here in the deeper south, we juice those oranges, add brown sugar, spices and use that as a marinade.
I have a tree in my house and i used them as meat tenderiser i also make a refreshment drink with it. In the Spanish culture sour oranges have many uses.
Forgot! Welcome back Bob! Been waiting for this. 🤗
I've missed you brother. Great having you back. I look forward to more 💕
Btw I'm a country boy from Mississippi raised in the swamps.
Hey Bob we have this sour oranges here in Puerto Rico the are used in cooking recipes and also they make a type of candy wrap in a leaf.
Thank you Bob!
I love ur vids! I've been subbed for a while and I'm never gonna regret it
You might want to try putting lime around the roots as wide as the branches spread. It makes Tomatoes sweeter so it might be worth try.
Loved the inclusion of music, I also loved that the music you chose really suits the theme of what you do. Loved the video!
Always a good day when bob post a vid. I hope your doing good man
Hey i just found you and im hooked! ive already watched 20 videos and loved them keep it up your really good!
Some foods are just for looking at 😅
Good to see you again Bob. Hope all is well. I was down in your neck of the woods a few weeks ago and could have stayed. Loved it 👍
Great video edit . Music , voice and scene cuts were spot on. Keep it coming
Yay! Bob is back!
I'm shocked to see someone saying there is no use for those extremely valuable orange trees. Normally they are used for marmalade but if you don't want to make marmalade then you should graft different citrus onto them. You are so lucky to have such valuable rootstock for grafting
I like how your hat is starting to wear down by each episode. I've been watching ever since that hat looked brand new
i have half of one of these trees in my back yard. it was used as root stock on the orange tree. came a freeze and half the orange died off, the other was this. we juice them and make lemonade. like to fool new friends with em also.
Awesome and funny at the same time. And you’re right. My kids love watching Huck’s reaction to food. I’m not sure if your oranges are the same as bitter oranges (seville). But if they are, you might be able to use them to make marmalade. All the extra sugar helps to sweeten them up. Or just use the rind to make “old fashioned” cocktails.
Use turbinado (or Sugar In The Raw brand) sugar, which is nutritious. Never eat the white sugar. It is bleached and has zero food value.
Good to see you! I hope you are doing OK.
keep on, keepin on man.
appreciate the videos brotha. more than you know👍
Marmalade?
You can run the oil on Huck for an all natural flea repellant.
Since they have pleasant smell, push whole cloves into them for a natural air freshener. They last several months and make a closed up winter house smell amazing! I do this with cheap store oranges. I bet fresh ones like that will be twice the fragrance.
Huck knows best 😁
In a survival situation I’m sure they would go down well. Thanks for sharing 👍👌👋🇬🇧
I loved this channel it teaches me things I need to know about survival
And by a real Texan :)
Yeah I'm a outdoor person I love to know how two do things if I get lost
Man your back! Dude your videos are sick!
