Dude...this is my teenage years right there. We had a hacked ps1 back in those days...me, my 2 brothers, and 3 other cousins, and we would play for hours!!!
Clicked instantly as soon as I saw the thumbnail. Rival Schools is so bloody good and fun with such interesting characters. I hope that Akira's reception in SFV will show Capcom that they need at least include more RS representatives, if not to make a new entry. It would be so cool to see Sakura and Karin with Makoto, Ibuki and Elena in new Rival Schools
I think the odds of a sequel to Project Justice/Rival Schools is pretty slim, but if they added more of those characters into SF6 I'd be 100% ok with that.
@@Aware_Wolf_X4 Although different gaming genres, it's more or less like how it's hard to have any new Final Fight, but at least SF has been preserving the memory of those characters since the late 90s. That also happens in MvC with many abandoned Capcom franchises but most notably Darkstalkers. There's already a whole generation of fg fans who grew with no connection to the actual DS games and just knows Morrigan because of MvC.
@@Aware_Wolf_X4 So back to SF... To me the devs should have been more considerate about a minor franchise like RS and also promote it in main SF games just like FF since SFA. The RS franchise is even officially part of the SF universe. Never caring about integrating RS in SF until SF5 made it feel left out. It made Akira feel like a "guest" to many people, when she was supposed to be seen like any FF char (even if new like Lucia). So anyways now there's at least hope that the current directors might think different about RS participants in SF in the future.
Rival Schools deserves a comeback and a collection! The games are phenomenal! Super jumps / ariels followed by insane combos! The art by Ediyan followed by the incredible music is beyond awesome! I still own my 98 PS copy and even bought the price I Japanese version just to try the dating Sim extra game!
To me Rival Schools was the last drop of the godly creative essence that defined Capcom's fg run from the early times to the mid 90s, in that artistic aspect. Those last drops were used in Rival Schools instead of Street Fighter 3 (also from the same year 1997). And then it was over.
The art style quality, character design quality, unique aesthetics overall, soundtrack quality, surprisingly elaborate story mode, the whole lore including the fact of it being a brand new branch of the SF world, and lastly getting an anime opening with theme song on the PS1 version (similar premium treatment of MegaMan games from that same time)... All that shows a shocking amount of high effort for a completely new franchise made in the late 90s - a time when it was expected from the fg companies to just stick to their main guns. And it seemed an infinitely more interesting project than SF3's debut. I mean imagine all that effort was invested on SF3 instead (still being a 2d title). Maybe such quality release would have prevented SF's death after 3S... and then Capcom's fg history in the 00s would have been very different.
I even believe that since the mid 90s, SF became the least interesting Capcom fg. When Capcom invented Darkstalkers and Marvel those games were much more interesting than SF. And until the end of the 90s more interesting new fgs kept coming like Rival Schools and Jojo. All of them made SF look basic and bland.
I knew from the thumbnail that this was Rival Schools. I used to play this in the arcade. My team was Sakura (briefly Hinata) and Akira (without helmet).
I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Please let it be Rival Schools!" I freaking love that game. An updated version would be so dope. The tag team supers are still some of the craziest supers I've seen.
Thanks for reminding me how great the soundtrack is to these games. Listening to it again! Pacific H.S. Rear Gate, the Gedo H.S. stages, Taiyo H.S. Classroom and Illusion Space are among my favorite in the OG version.
Justin did you just now find this game? I always asked you to play it years now ehehe 5:07 yo what kind of sweep is that? Kyosuke uses BOTH legs to sweep? Is that a real karate attack?
This is an incredibly underrated game/series. Really wish a comprehensive collection could have been brought out soon after Akira’s announcement for SFV, giving us a year to soak in the greatness of the series to better appreciate the references. Still hoping we get it one day. Call it “Rival Schools: Class Reunion” I appreciate Rival Schools being officially incorporated into Street Fighter, but like Final Fight, I still feel there’s good reason to have the series exist on its own. Here’s hoping for a new game someday. Call it “Rival Schools: Senior Year”
It's hard to expect that much... but at the very least having guaranteed participation of RS in all SF games from now on is a good start. Not exactly Akira again, maybe a constant rotation would be nice (but I'm not against her either way). At some point FF chars in SF was an unexpected and wild idea and by now they feel totally integrated into SF, with some fans even looking at them as "veterans". Ideally RS must be pushed into SF from now on and one day the chars will start looking familiar. Like the whole SF world concept - with FF and RS as directly connected worlds - was supposed to be in first place.
@@carlosaugusto9821 I agree that FF and RS work naturally in SF since both seemed to be more or less born of the concept of SF in the first place (FF was at one point called SF’89 and RS seemed like it was inspired by Sakura to the point she was a guest fighter). However, I’d like the franchises to continue individually because it would help to flesh out the world of SF and show that a lot happens that isn’t directly tied to the events of the games. Not every compelling story needs to be a world threat abated by an international tournament setting. Just feels like a missed opportunity not to keep the franchises alive for themselves and the world as a whole, especially FF since side-scrolling beatemups are enjoying a Renaissance.
I remember seeing this game and hearing about it back in the day. Because of that, this is the first time I’ve actually seen it played. Capcom must have really liked Sakura. After Alpha 2, they didn’t seem to fail at putting her in every game except XvSF and MvC1 (unless she had cameos?)
This is the bigger history picture: SNK invented Yuri as a playable char in AOF2 (1994) with a completely unique concept that challenged the fg char standards set by SF. It was a huge hit in the fg world at the time and heavily influenced the character creation philosophy from that point on. So Capcom responded with Sakura in SFA2 (1996) that was an instant hit too. Capcom wasn't so fond of exploring those "trends" as SNK and other companies in the 90s, but i guess they needed to respond to that very popular "cute girl fighter" trend started by SNK. Anyways both Yuri and Sakura started getting much more appearances in SNK and Capcom games respectively compared to veteran chars. So i can see it was very tempting for the RS devs to add Sakura. Thinking about it, that also helped to reinforce the official lore point about RS being related to the SF world. Perfect decision for that time. It was just sad that SF devs refused to explore that relation until SF5.
No, this is YOUR interpretation of history. SNK's first 2 flag ship fighting games were utter, utter utter garbage and only contained 1 female character between them (King). They saw how popular Chun Li was with the entire world, so they tried to "out sexy" her with Mai, and tried to "out cute" her with Yuri. In 1996, Capcom didn't give 1 f*ck what SNK was doing - they were dead in a ditch at that point. Still desperately trying to beat World Warrior (which was 5 years old at this point), whilst Capcom were leading the way into 3D with Resident Evil and Rival Schools.... ASWELL as SF3 and the VS series
You know why this game comes with 2 discs (Arcade & Evolution) in the PS1 port? While the Arcade disc was more or less a straight port of the arcade game, the Evolution disc ditches the "story mode" while adding alt. versions of the girls other than Akira, changed around some supers, added a couple of minigames and some other bonus content... ...and had a bunch of generic "extra" characters that you can unlock. Now here's the crazy part. The Evolution Disc was originally a school sim visual novel in the JP version where you can make your own character and interact with the cast for an entire school year while building your stats & moveset along the way! It was so popular that the game got had an updated version exclusive to the PS1 (which serves as Rival Schools 1.5, more or less) that serves largely as an standalone expansion to the Evolution disc while adding 2 more characters. That was too bothersome to localize, so the school life mode had to be cut and a bunch of pre-made custom characters were instead added as a form of compensation. The same would hold true for Project Justice, though "how" you make your own character in THAT is another story.... But yeah. This game seriously rocks.
A surprising amount of effort for such a brand new game. A level of effort that SF wasn't getting at the same time btw. RS and SF3 came out in the same year.
I remember this one. Went over to a friend's house to play it. Something clicked for me with Hinata. Also had a friend who was ADDICTED to Project Justice. This franchise needs to return and it's kind of weird it faded off. But maybe Akira's appearance in SFV hints at something for the future. Wishful thinking.
So Justin, I gotta ask, do you and Maxi Dood love or just appreciate Sakura, because I see you use her in Rival Schools/ Cap vs SNK2/Alpha games....while Maxi uses her theme from EX at the end of all his videos. I'm not judging, I love her too! ❤
Expect Capcom Fighting Collection Vol.2. Get your fingers crossed on this collection.
This game came with two discs, an Arcade style disc, and another slightly different version, which allowed you to let your friends borrow it and practice. Between that and the single shoulder button super moves, this was a really good game to play casually, or with friends who are "bad at fighting games".
Rival Schools was the first game fighting game I played that was in 3D AND had the teamwork feature. This game is a gem and I want them to make a comeback.
I love Rival Schools til death. The OST alone makes the game worth playing. If only Capcom released a remastered version of both United By Fate and Project Justice.
There was even a nice anniversary celebration opportunity last year, the 25th anniversary of RS. Let's see if something happens nearing the 30th anniversary then.
Can't believe the difference between this generation of fighting games compared to today's. SF6 soundtrack SUCKS. Street Fighter ex 2 plus alpha in comparison
i remember getting a backup of the japanese version on my modded ps1 back in the day. the anime intro always got me pumped. i know the songs lyrics to this day.
I don't have hopes about a community tournament of an obscure game influencing Capcom in that way, but doing it wouldn't hurt anyway. There's a whole generation of dedicated fg players who just didn't grow with these old games.

2:36 - 2:39 That is a cool-looking 2D sprite of Raizo. Pretty neat. (edited) For those of you saying that Rival Schools needs a comeback... The creator of the series, Hideaki Itsuno, has said in recent interviews that he'd like to make a third and final installment, to give a proper ending. At the moment, he is busy with Dragon's Dogma 2 development. Never the less, though.
Legendary game with Soul Blade and Bloody Roar: those games where so dope with so much ideas that nowadays games have lost (even if they have a better cgi and moves)
I will be honest that a Rival Schools Collection would be sweet. It would be a lot of work because of the console package of Rival Schools 2, an extended Rival Schools 1 game plus a Visual Novel game that NEVER saw the light of day in the US but man, I would love it if they brought that in. That said, I honestly feel like this would be the kind of game that would really benefit from a Remaster treatment Rival Schools 1/2 are pretty rough to look at even at the time, so I would really, really appreciate a rebuild of it. And don't forget Project Justice in that....
Rival Schools is a really cool game series that needs to be resurrected, and yeah... you could be annoyed by both Gan and Sakura's infinites in the original Arcade release (and of course, the Arcade disc on Ps1), is curious how Hyo isn't really too hard for a "secret" final boss, unlike his demon version in Project Justice. Edit: I still remember back during my high school days that at the arcades close to the school they had an ACTUAL cabinet of the game (as nowdays most of the surviving places just have a MAME or equivalent emulator on a PC adapted to an arcade cabinet) that I loved to play, good old times indeed, and as I never knew the combos and stuff (just casual play) I mostly played with Hinata and Sakura.
These games are so slept on! Lots of combos. Unfortunately a lot of these games were never fleshed out. Capcoms got a great Library that they need to capitalize on same goes for Nintendos 16bit stuff. Now with video collectionjng becoming so expensive it’s in there interest to revise there entire classic library of games.
Capcom did a lot of different stuff but they all ended up rough products, probably because of the game making conditions of the time. These games like Rival Schools, Star Gladiator and Cyberbots just didn't have the opportunity of getting polished through many sequels like SF, Marvel and DS.
I already knew it was Rival Schools before I clicked on the video, lol. Miss this game, it definitely needs to be revived, please make it happen, Capcom!
Rival schools is one of my favorite ever fighting games, and I want to say competitor for best ost. I agree, Sakura in this is nuts, and my favorite with kyosuke. This game was my childhood lol.
I believe it was really the most elaborate story mode in any Capcom fg at the time. And it must even be among the most elaborate ones in the whole genre in the 90s. Think about it, all fgs up to 1997. Though TK3 made a big impact with those cg cutscenes but even so it wasn't a properly arranged and detailed story mode. RS1 had full dialogues, character drawings with many different expressions and even voices. And it's a team game, so many chars interacting. Extremely impressive effort for a brand new game.
They considered a third Rival Schools...or rather, they said "if they saw enough interest"...which back then was Capcom Speak for "we're not gonna do it and blame you" (see, Megaman Legends 3).
Matter of very bad timing, that influenced Capcom negatively. SF's death in 99 with Third Strike demoralized Capcom and ruined the future of their fgs, so much that their last true new fg was CvS2 in 01 (still a good part of it was recycled content). After that point Capcom only ever released straight up recycled games like CFE or rereleases like HSF2. So that also killed the future of RS. And to make it worse Project Justice tragically was made for the dieing DC. Personally i didn't see a big reason to bury RS, since the 00s actually was a good time for 3d fgs. It was only ever bad for 2d fgs. TK, VF, DOA and SC were doing well. So maybe RS could have had a chance in those years. But like I said in the beginning the problem is more that Capcom felt demoralized and then just quit fgs. There was truly no problem with RS itself, nothing to blame it. They messed up by making it for a dieing console.
@Justin Wong is not The only one Who wants Rival Schools tô come back! It would be só awesome tô have a sequel if they kept all The core elements that made The game awesone
Thanks to max, I noticed that when capcom or any established videogame company does a collection, Or adds a guest character, It sounds like they are campaigning to see if they will make a sequel to their older IP's. With that said, I feel like I'm the only one thinking that Akira in SFV, Was their way of saying there could be a Rival Schools collection, Or a sequel to the last one. Capcom fighting collection for example, But I don't think enough people bought it.
I definitely sank many hours into Rival Schools. I really enjoyed the mini games, too. This was the era when everything from Japan was the coolest and it had that aesthetic and fun style. Made you feel like a really cool kid.
Capcom was putting a lot of effort in the genre around that time. Also in the 32 bits gen Capcom investing hard in making a lot out of the new hardwares. RS1 was just one case of great arcade port. Remember SFA3 too, a nice ps1 port with many extras. Then in the Saturn, Capcom were working to make more arcade accurate ports, which was a big thing for the time. I believe TK3's legendary PS1 port made a big impression in the whole industry that pushed Capcom to work on making more extras for their console ports from the late 90s.
@@carlosaugusto9821 Yes, and it was a great era for games, in general! So many fantastic titles were release back then. The jump to 32 bits really allowed game creators to expand their work. The balance between what they could imagine and what the console memory could allow was at such a peak. And they all had fun making games that all had fun playing!
It would need to be a remake or reboot like it or not, because it's a very old and obscure game at this point. It's different from SF having a 9 year hiatus and then returning, because it's SF. Now RS would need a proper introduction to the average fg consumer nowadays.
I used to LOVE playing rival schools. I liked to use sakura for no reason but my friend did too so i had to choose a different character. 2:36 - 2:39 That is a cool-looking 2D sprite of Raizo. Pretty neat.

For those of you saying that Rival Schools needs a comeback... The creator of the series, Hideaki Itsuno, has said in recent interviews that he'd like to make a third and final installment, to give a proper ending. At the moment, he is busy with Dragon's Dogma 2 development. Never the less, though.
YOU ASK AND SHALL YOU RECEIVE!!!
Man I would love for this game to get back. A modern Rival Schools would be so sick with a chess club character.
She launches her opponent so high lol. If you could pull off your Alpha 3 custom combo, that would be so dope
Legendary game with Soul Blade and Bloody Roar: those games where so dope with so much ideas that nowadays games have lost (even if they have a better cgi and moves)
We need a street fighter ex hd collection.
Never seen this game before but I'm loving it.
Sakura
At the very least a collection
I remember playing this shit at the corner store maquinitas arcade cabinet easily 25 years ago I'm 33 now
These games are so slept on!
I’ve been wanting a freakin rival schools stand alone remake. I was legit obsessed with this game growing up
I already knew it was Rival Schools before I clicked on the video, lol. Miss this game, it definitely needs to be revived, please make it happen, Capcom!
I'm so happy we are getting rival schools after a year of this even if it's just a port, hopefully we get a new one someday (and power stone 3)
oh, so that's where the "how many times do we have to teach you" meme comes from
I miss that game. The character designs were so good.
Yes yes yes yes absolutely. Been wanting either a rerelease of Project Justice or even a collection. My dream would be a sequel. Such a fun game
With Capcom so deep into retro releases recently, the lack of any new RS release is disappointing
Justin: "Ah! Damn man... Fighting games... I love some fighting games."
Me: 🤤
Rival school REMASTER PLEASE!!!
Also, like Marvel, during a Team Super, Mashing button WILL INCREASE THE DAMAGE!!!!
Tons of stuff. The bonus disc is really great with the girl with Gan powers.
I too hope that one day Capcom can port it to steam along with more of their great fighting games.
favorite franchise next to Street Fighter entirely.
Shoma is my fucking dude.
Good ol' Rival Schools, brings me back to High School
My favorite game ever. I still play it to this day.
Rival schools is one of my favorite ever fighting games, and I want to say competitor for best ost. I agree, Sakura in this is nuts, and my favorite with kyosuke. This game was my childhood lol.
Justin just casually playing Mahvel with Rival School skin.
Man, I miss Rival School
Sorry JWong, you ain't beating me in this game!
You either BATSU AND KYOSUKE ALL DAY >:D
@@phil4863 - It's been a long time but every character was so fun to learn. Before I stopped I was using Daigo a lot.
This game was a great single player experience. Just so much to unlock. Good times
I love getting my ass handed to me in Project Justice on fightcade.
Thanks for playing this game - it's the best.
I miss this game so much. I wonder why a lot of games from capcom haven’t had ports since their creation?!
I always did really love this game I was shocked that we didn't get more of them
Matter of very bad timing, that influenced Capcom negatively.
@@carlosaugusto9821 yea I think you're quite accurate, fkn terrible how it went
I love the series and I especially like Moero Jutice Gakuen (Project Justice Japanese eidtion) with instead of the editor you have a board game!
@Justin Wong is not The only one Who wants Rival Schools tô come back! It would be só awesome tô have a sequel if they kept all The core elements that made The game awesone
7:11:00 -7:18:00 please someone tell me where that music jingle is from. I swear I know it but can't pinpoint it. 😂
i remember using the swimmer who had flippers. Had the longest combos
Played this game all the time. Please bring it back!!!
RS has a counter system (i believe its programmed on one button for PSX version, Arcade idk)...its called *Tardy Counter* 😅
This was my go to game when my friends came round was awesome back then great combos wish I could play again someday. Nice 1 GOAT
It would need to be a remake or reboot like it or not, because it's a very old and obscure game at this point. It's different from SF having a 9 year hiatus and then returning, because it's SF. Now RS would need a proper introduction to the average fg consumer nowadays.
i feel like if it do come back they gotta switch genres to like a pixel art 2d fighting game or a beat em up for it to work in today’s market
I used to LOVE playing rival schools. I liked to use sakura for no reason but my friend did too so i had to choose a different character.
I ended up using some school nurse lady in a white coat i think. She had this chiropractor grab kind of super that did insane amount of damage and i ended up making him rage all the time i would land it (which was often) XD
I would love to see another rival schools game the first two were so good
Project Justice is my favourite game in the Ace Attorney series.
Project Justice is my favourite game in the Yakuza series.
This game needs to comeback, It's amazing
The secuel in Dreamcast is a hidden gem, never came up in other's console. Capcom bringhim back please we need this.
It was strange that it wasn't put in the PS2 since the DC was already dieing
