Dude. OMG. Clay Fighter. When I was a kid, I signed up for a tournament, I believe at Blockbuster, for Clay Fighter. Thinking it'd be good for honing my skills, I decided to play the game on hard. I literally got so frustrated, I think against The Blob, I cried. I fought him over and over and over, I don't know how many times, and couldn't win. It may have been the first time I felt overwhelming frustration from a video game. So, seeing Justin Wong struggle with CF too, kinda makes me feel a little validated about just how freaking hard this game can be! Thanks for the therapy session, Justin ^_^
I won my local clay fighters section at our blockbuster then got ran in tmnt....🙄
My bet is the playable characters were sped up for the "Tournament Edition" and the boss was untouched, leaving the boss character ironically the worst in the cast.
Like everyone else is saying, clayfighter 63 1/3 is a must play. Also, this just reminded me of fighter's destiny, another N64 fighter
Man, I loved Fighter's destiny. I remember dying from a counter at fight 98 of the 100 fights challenge :(
I know the focus of this video is how hard the game is, but can we talk about how impressive it is that the sound design is as good as it is for a SNES game? like I'm genuinely surprised how uncompressed that announcer sounds. Also if I remember it right it has a full vocal theme with lyrics and everything. The only other fighting game I think that did this on the SNES is ki.
The sound effects, announcer and the rest of the sounds are beyond top tier for sure.
The theme song rocks. It even has vocals and a guitar solo.
I will never not laugh at Justin talking about chip damage, frame advantage, tiers, and cross-ups in a game that was probably developed by a couple of drunks over a long weekend.
Once you get into that competitive fighting game mindset, it's hard to get out.
It's dat FGC Brain TM XD
Clayfighter 63 1/3 has actual KI combos btw lol
You're deluded. It was acclaimed at the time it came out. Get the sh*t out of your eyes.
@AmateurThespian this game probbaly took years to make. Lol.
This was originally made for tournaments; it was a Blockbuster exclusive for the Blockbuster Video Game Championships in the 90s. It was really annoying because you couldn't skip the map screen like in the "normal" version between fights, which really slowed down how far you could progress in the time limit since it was unfortunately just about fighting the CPU.
I remember playing TMNT Tournament Fighter for that Blockbuster contest, but not this.. maybe my memory is scrambled after close to 30 years
@@robertmanes9333 There was at least one year where it was split between consoles, and the SNES players played TMNT Tournament Fighter as one of the games while Genesis players did some racing game, I think, and both players played their version of NBA Jam.
@@OldManSin SNES was Clayfighter, TMNT, and NBA Jam. Store competitions were "score the most points in x amount of time". I won my store (in Sacramento, CA) and if I remember right, the prize was my choice of one of the games and free game rentals for a year. The second round (at Marine World in Vallejo, CA) was an actual bracketed tournament of NBA Jam and I got worked in the first round.
Also, for the store competitions, they used a special cartridge made for the tournament that had all 3 games on it.
@@diecastdug9343 I trained for these games back in 93 for this contest but couldn't find a Blockbuster. Nearest one was an hour away and my mom wasn't having it. The gaming mags made guides about which characters and teams to use to advance.
Definitely was not made for tournaments. It was selected as a game riding the SFII competition wave but avoiding SFII.
im so glad you are diving into this series ! This game is hilarious hahah. like the other guys say clayfighter 64 is great as well. Look forward to you trying that one bro.
The Blob and Bad Mr. Frosty are S-Tier. CLASSIC
Yes they are. I think Tiny definitely comes in at about third. Tiny is actually very absurd.
Now try Clayfighter 63 1/3 Sculptors Cut.
Fr fr clayfighter series is so godly
Yes! 63 1/3 was fun as hell!
Sculpter's Cut is rad
YES I have found my people. That game was amazing
My GOAT
Gosh, the nightmares that this series gave me as a kid will always stay with me. (Mostly from the N64 game.)
I had a weird fear of claymation when I was little, but this game'll always hold a special place in my heart.
Claymation is just naturally scary looking.
the only fighting game where i can be boogerman
@@catmouthmcbleeb6421 or a stereotypical Chinese restaurant kungfu cook
Yeah, the Ed 209 would scare me all the time when it fell down the stairs and started squealing like a pig.
Agreed, there's something really unsettling about claymation. Especially in this game
Where most kids grew up in the 90s/early 2000s with Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat as their first fighting game, Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut on the N64 was my first fighting game ever. And at the time, I didn't know it was similar to Killer Instinct until I played the original KI a decade later. This also introduced me to Earthworm Jim and Booger Man for the first time. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember hearing that Sculptor's Cut is one of the rarest N64 games of all time and I am not planning to sell my copy anytime soon
Love that you tried this game out! I played it extensively as a kid. The CPU is really ridiculous in what it is capable of on hard mode. They do almost double normal damage with their moves and in chip, they can rapid moves that take charge in a way that would make even CPU Guile from SF2 shake his head, and projectile characters can even fire off multiple projectiles, at different speeds, when the player can only have one projectile on screen at a time (except Blue Suede Goo's "Don't Be Cruel Now" move, which players can also do and always sends 4 notes out).
On multiple occasions I can recall, Bonker would get so crazy with the computer rapidly giving him instructions that I heard about 5 overlapping grunts and he ended up jumping as though doing the body press, but he just idled in his stance for the entire jump arc. XD
And N. Boss is really weird. Sometimes, he just kind of jumps around and doesn't do anything like he did with you this time, but others he will just camp at the other side of the screen and projectile you to death. He also has a terrifying hold that usually means a round loss if you're caught in it, but he didn't use it this time.
12:20 hadn’t even made it to The Blob. This is such a reward as a normal human child who tried to beat this monster. A pro is going AGHHH!
Even pro at street fighter is a jobber in clay fighter
Psycologist: Shin Tiny doesnt exist, he cant hurt you
Shin Tiny:
This game was nightmarishly hard when i was younger. But if you pick The Blob and just spam buzzsaw, you can easily cheese arcade mode.
I did that to my childhood friend. Since it's a charge move, you can use it to just fly across the screen back and forth, rarely leaving yourself open to damage.
It’s really entertaining to see Justin going back and forth between excitement and bewilderment.
😁😫😁😫😁😫
Took a break from commenting BUT this was one of my favorite series as a kid, super hard but also taught me alot. Nice to see it getting some love, Clayfighters 64 is the best one imo
Also WONG/YIPES/MVC2/COMMENTARY 😂
14:05 the exactly moment when Justin eats his own worlds and recived a value lesson hahahahaha.
#BusAss
GG's Justin and Tiny for fun!
Clay fighters has the same mechanics as samurai Shodown. Damage you deal is based on the character’s “sweet spot” for each character, you deal 2x damage on counter attacks, and damage is like dice roll(damage is random at times). If you counter a fighter with your character’s sweet spot you can deal 50-70% damage in one hit.
Wong: "I Don't think I'll lose in this game..."
Also Wong: "Tiny is cooking 🍳 me bro..."
I played a lot of the n64 version (clayfighter 63 and 1/3). It played like Killer instinct. Really solid game.
Random stuff aside, the game is really fun. I was expecting you lose a few matches with random stuff if you ask me, happy that you covered this game.
Bonker has an easy corner infinite in Tournament Edition. It's been so long that I can't remember the exact details, but it involves his normal where his head extends forward.
Yep, that's the one. Set it up with a Jab if you catch them slipping. And then Forward+Medium Punch if I remember correctly. But you kind of have to move him when you do the head move. Keep them afloat. Most characters have some type of infinite in this game. Or close to. Helga probably doesn't. She's pretty bad. I think she might be the worst in the game.
Laughed so hard when Bonker went Bonkers 😂
Gawd! The Nostalgia from this ^^
Great vid & loved
every second of this.
One wild thing about this- It seemed to be designed for dynamic hitboxes, where damage depends on the range and angle you land your hit at. Console limitations made it more of a mess than anything else though.
Never got to play the TE for this one, but looks good. But I would absolutely love a C2 Judgement Clay tournament!
Bro yess
God I'd love to see this franchise try one more time, now that we're at a level of tech where claymation could really show off
Interplay recently filed a cease and desist to a fan made project, so hopefully that means they are planning something.
They said they were gonna remake/remaster/something Clayfighter and I hope to god it actually happens I love this game series so much.
I remember Blob being top tier in this game simply because of that BS buzzsaw move. 😂
I used the blob too 🤣
That boot got me thinking he’s untouchable
That was in the first non TE version of this game.
@@kaiserbts8007 best move in the game by far. Just Down+Heavy Kick
The cut one of his moves where he can turn into a bomb. It dealt him damage as well. I used a cheat device to be able to use it.
"My man." , "My man..." , "My man!" ... ALL the times! But that one time at 8:58 lol... "My man, What!?" and Blue Suede Goo goes "Hey what the hell man!?" XD
Didn't this one have clayalties? I remember doing them back in the day.
That was 63 1/3 and Sculptors cut on the N64.
I actually loved and grinded this game hard as a kid. I still have the coveted cartridge for my Super Nintendo… def big nostalgia points here. But the thing about nostalgia is u only remember the good and not the cheating ass A.I.
my very first fighting game, because mom wouldn't let me have Street Fighter because it was violent. awww, nostalgia
Fun fact, there is a clay fighters fan game in development called Clay fighters Resculpted
Really? Where at?
That final boss is trash until it grabs you. Instant death. No exaggeration: You will instantly lose unless your mashing game is insane, and after you get out, it can choose to just grab you again right as you land.
"Clayfighters 2: Judgement Clay" still one of the best parody titles I've ever read.
It looks like there are two things about damage going on here. 1) damage is somewhat randomized, DP does between 1/8 lifebar and 1/2. 2) the last 1/3 of the lifebar has the same amout of hit points as the first 2/3.
Clayfighter 63 1/3 next!
Sculptor's cut!
Cluck you
HOOOONNG KONG CLAAAAAP!
I would _love_ to see this played in tournaments. Jank-ass games (wrapped in a charming presentation) that would more than likely frustrate the competitors are a huge win for audiences.
You're finally playing Clayfighter!!! 😲
And thank you for showcasing the superior SNES version. Unfortunately during the Wii era, Virtual Console gave us the jank Genesis version. 🙄
5:59 - "This game is way better than Street Fighter 6" - JWong
I rented this at Blockbuster in the mid 90's when it came out. Still a replayable classic no doubt and the Intro song is epic..
I played this as a kid. Bad Mr frosty
That's awesome you played this. I never did as a kid and always saw the ads in the magazines. But I passed everytime.
praise the taffy
Wong: Bonker is just free
a few seconds later
Bonker: i hear someone talking trash
Yes Justin is finally playing Clay fighter on SNES that's one of my favorite fighting games as well I love this.
I remember clayfighter!!! I used to have this game on the old Super Nintendo System and I used to main the Elvis guy.
I play the blob but yes. Blue Sway Goo kicks kind of prove the the hit boxes for attacks is set to "on". So if anyone gets caught in it, its their own damn fault.
Also there might be a hack where the game is fixed up a bit.
Considering the marketing campaign of this game was all about dunking the competition, is kinda ironic how the franchise disappeared so fast while the others lasted even more if they aren't still on production.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if they make a gritty reboot like KI or MK9.
"whoever likes lafty taffy"
Dude I work for Ferrara. MY BUILDING MAKES THAT SHIT!
I don't recall this being hard at all growing up. Especially with the absurd NES games that came before it like Ghost and Goblins, Contra and Castlevania. Is this the first time playing this game man? This is one of those games you never forgot.
Straight from the Jankyard.. Wong sayin “Blue Suede Goo”
Been waiting for this. Thanks for making an already awesome day that much better brother. Cherry on top.
would love to see Justin play Body Blows from the Amiga days for jankyard or something from the bloody roar series...I would love to hear his opinion on both of them! haha
Justin, when u gonna play Metal Warriors for the snes man??
Im telling you, vs mode is sickkk
I had the N64 Clay Fighter game was I was a youngster. That game was soo much fun bro.
The reason damage randomly was high is the game increases damage for combos. That's why your close dp did so much. It was 2 hits.
I used to beat the boss every day after school
Blue Suede Goo: "Watch the hair, man..."
😯 I’m surprised you played this game. I used to play this on Sega Genesis.
0:11
What a comeback indeed
This was that 1994-95 weird period of movies and video games where things were so dark and strange.
Laffy Taffy is awesome, especially the grape and green apple flavors.
Haha I'm glad you played this! Was decimated waiting for this one. I am faithfully awaiting Gundam Battle Assault 2! 🙏
Hearing the announcer shout Ickybud Clay brings me baaack. Thanks for the vid Justin!
This was such a hilarious video. My favorite J Wong video so far. As for the characters, I'd say once you know the game enough. That The Blob and Bad Mr Frosty are easily the best in the game. Tiny probably being third. I've found some infinites and wacky combos, traps, etc. Game is wild. Even if you take it semi seriously it's still a great game. Just broken beyond belief, only character I'd say is utter trash would be Helga. I don't think she has any redeeming qualities at all. Also, in case anyone didn't know. The motion for Blue Suede Goo's multi note fireball is the motion for a lot of those crazy SNK game supers. Crazy stuff. Maybe I should dust this game off and make a combo video for this game.
0:00 "Let's go Justin!"
Aw, he's going to lose, ain't he?
I had the game growing up! Was a nice change of pace from Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter! ❤🔥
Man, huge nostalgia trip for me. I loved this game.
Clayfighter 63-1/3 was soooo good. Def try that next if you can
Hahaha 🤣! That first one , I just heard muda muda muda !
This was one of the qualifying games for the 1st blockbuster video game championships .
I honestly don’t remember the snes version’s arcade ladder being that handicapped towards the player. But I do remember the game being a whole lot of fun to play with my Brothers and cousins.
Thats how we feel when you do Hail storm beserker charge on incoming.
Laffy taffy the candy is fire Justin trippin
I prefared Clay fighter 2. I remember renting it at blockbuster than getting a happy meal from McDonald's and playing this game!! Good times!!
and just to make things better.
the name of ickybod clay's uppercut is called the "boohoo-ken".
Mad props to keeping your cool the whole game, I would have lost my shit to much.
When Justin said vector circle I think he was talking about the vectorman game
Played this game as part of a tournament series they had at blockbuster in the 90s
Clay fighters was my first fighter game! I loved the heck out of it
That Taffy was using fake stun more than I've ever seen the CPU use it.
"Is this like Shin Taffy?" 😂😂😂
I’ve been working on a game basically fighters for like eight years that’s just been at super slow passion project for me that it’s just like a spoof of all my favorite properties
I bursted out laughing a few times. Great stuff.
One of my FAV games on SNES, now play number 2!! I've never played... wonder if the game play is better? But I remember it being worse :P
It is actually worse. First one is way better.
Always fun watching your streams and watching you go "WHAT!" at the absurdity of the cheapness 😄 I want them to reboot Clayfighter so bad more than any other franchise. I know they could do it justice with the right developers.
I read blue suede god and was like, “checks out.”
Remember renting this at blockbuster whenever Fatal Fury was checked out.
Any boss would be disappointing after Shin Tiny 🤣
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought about a few things... OCTOSPIN, Spinning carrot, and the announcer.
Tiny recovering after that flip in the air so fast and doing that long distance punch lol reminds me of mk 11 jade players slide kicking after air razor rang
Clayfigter 63 1/3 was my game brotha I love how they had ultra combos like killer instinct
Bruh, this make me feel so old 🙈
After school I used to play this with my friends..
Loved the video Clayfighter's take me back when I was playing against my friends on their super nintendo. The best characters in the game is The blob and Tiny hands down
Clayfighters was one of the games I had to play to get to the regional finals in blockbuster video game championship's. Was the only time I ever played it, and it's because I had no choice.
those fights against the clowns were bonkers!
I remember this playing when I'm in gradeschool. good old days!
Wow, I had forgotten about this game. I rented it a couple times when I was a kid. It was difficult... and weird.
The panda editor likes laffy taffy 😩😂😂
