I cringe everytime Dave tells callers "you cant eat out at restaurants, you can't go shopping, you need to sell your car" then the caller chuckles. Because you and I know, most people can't self discipline!

If they knew how to handle money we would never hear their voice on this channel :) I honestly feel like half or less of the callers go through with Daves advice...People are too set in their ways to change easily unless they really hit rock bottom and even a few of those people still dont learn...Some people really just dont care as much about being in debt and just assume everyone is and its normal and sadly we know that is the new normal...

$80k a year salary with $3600 per month in bills. No wonder they are behind. Their take home after taxes is probably $4500 every month (Dave said $5000 but that's for states that don't have state taxes) which leaves them around $900 left for food, gas, etc. One emergency situation and they are doom if they don't have any money saved up. She needs to do a Bank Reconciliation to see where money has been going.
She does NOT need to buy food 1st.
It’s Rent/Mortgage, Utilities, Car Note, Car Insurance, Daycare, Food and then other bills. People are more willing to give you a plate of food than to help you pay your bills. If you don’t have a place to live, where are you going to put the food? If you don’t have utilities, how are you suppose to keep your food cold or use it to cook your food? How are you suppose to wash your backside? I would never ever buy food 1st.

I would switch some of the priorities just because they're in a crisis.
I'd bring the rent and car current before the utilities. Utilities are much more willing to work with you on a payment plan than a landlord or car lender. Besides, utilities don't mean much if you don't have a home to have working lights and running water in. And NONE of that happens without a car to get to work in.......

I never heard about Dave Ramsey until a few days ago and I have been watching these episodes. I am please with how we lived our lives as a team, raised 8 children, and lived modestly naturally. I have a Home Equity loan I am paying off. I have paid it off several times but now I am just paying it off and not going to use it again. The house is paid off except for the Home Equity loan. There are no debts that we have and have four cars paid off. I am about to donate one to NPR.
I am paying off my daughter's master's degree willingly and at my husband and I agreement. We never eat out no vacations . He is retired and we are retired. I expect to receive funds in the future and we are set in our retirement fund. I would like to move but our real estate market is terrible and we will lose money if we move so we are not moving.
No car payments. All my utilities are automatically taken out. I also helped one son with a debt. Now no more. They are all set. If I could not help my daughter, she would be able to take over the student loans and is appreciative. When she marries, I am only buying the dress and that is all. Of course I use a credit card but pay it off as soon as possible. Age 75 and 80 and done with it all. I think this man has so much common sense it is disgusting. I am not religious do not like religion and stay away from it all that is the only point I differ with him. I have my reasons why I feel this way.
I am not longer helping my adult kids there is no need to except for one daughter I mentioned.
I have grateful kids no interference and anything I do from here on in is going be death defying LOL

We fell behind a month (or more) on utilities when my stepdad lost his job 3 years ago. He needed to get his license current to get a full time position at his new job so we had 4 months of our monthly income at almost $3,000 instead of the $6,000 we had been at. We had less than $1,000 in credit card debt & no savings & live in New York so our rent was1/2 of our reduced income. He sold stuff & borrowed a few hundred to get his license back & we paid the freaking rent! We've been evicted before & it's no fun! Utility companies will make payment agreements with you but we wouldn't have be able to get come up with first, last & security to get a new appartment while struggling that badly.

Making 80,000 per year and behind on bills makes you a dead beat. Not meant as an insult but a statement of fact. Just like being unwashed and living with old food strewn about a house is not impoverished, it is slovenly. Best way to address something is to accurately identify the problem. She's less likely to do anything if she just views herself as "not good with numbers" rather than the deadbeat she is behaving like.

I notice that Dave's always says take care of the four walls and number one is food. but I just want to add that most people are thinking about going to a grocery store. Well grocery stores are some of the smartest marketers in the world - they sell toys and junk food and clothes and all kinds of things that are really not "necessary foods". For example in my local grocery one can buy buckets of ice cream and boxes of chocolate bars (that are really luxury items and are also unhealthy) they also sell prepared foods that one just has to stick in the microwave and are much more expensive than buying the raw ingredients and making it yourself because most of the work is already done for you. so just be careful when "buying the food" and try to keep to what is necessary and needed and not buy junk!

When I hear behind on ALL of our bills, I’m thinking, we’ll first thing, cancel a few things and get less bills to pay every month. For example, I don’t pay for Cable TV, I use an antenna for most of my TV. Student Loans paid off long ago. Bo credit card debt. That is auto paid off every month. My Truck is a 2003. Paid off long ago. My only debt is my House Morgage which I pay a little more on it every month. I try to limit monthly services that I can as these days that's what every company wants these days. Not to buy something outright, but to get you on a monthly forever plan. Say you buy a Ring Video Doorbell. Not you have a monthly payment for that for however long you use that doorbell. I have a cheap wireless doorbell that cost me like $12 from Home Depot. I did wire up Cameras around my house. There is the upfront cost for the system when I fully paid for and no monthly costs. That's a better overall system for my needs. You can get the Eufy Doorbell camera and gave no monthly fee. So look at other options and avoid all those small fees as they do add up.

I make $120k a year and my take-home (after taxes) is barely over $5k. No 401k, not other deductions, just normal Federal and State (SC) taxes. Not sure how she's supposed to bring home $5k at $80k /yr.

I want to send my adult children to FPU, but NOT if they are led by people like this? How can they teach FPU if they are not out of debt, much less a month behind?

I live in Australia can anyone give me directions on how I can get it please I have looked at similar budget apps but Daves is top notch for exactly my needs. Any advice would be appreciated :-)

I know this video is older but $80,000 a year after tax is not over 5k. I make 85k a year WITH a %7 bonus for working nights and my monthly take home is not 5k. Its closer to 4k then 5k

This man is brilliant. Extremely helpful...but I have to say...I am confused as to why he receives praise from everyone , but that Suze Orman lady is called a crook and all sorts of awful names, when she is basically giving the same strong, good, sound advice? I assure you, I'm not a feminist or anything, but I've listened to them both, and they are both making sound suggestions... it's just something I've noticed...seems unfair...

Bridget S. Only reason I am listening to Dave is because Suzie's show went off the air.

A feminist is someone who believes men and women are equal. Lol

It looks like she is expending extra $$ in non sense. There is no way with 80k to be behind unless ur debts/ expenses / pleasure are too high.
