My dad was a master of that. When he yelled or raised his voice i knew it wasn't going to be too bad. It's when he would speak quietly and with careful deliberation that I knew my world was about to get fucked up.
"And believe you me when I tell you that the next time one of you perpetual disappointments doesn't even have the common decency to try and do better at something you supposedly do, I will go ahead and toss your sorry ass out of here in about 10 seconds and then I will forget you forever in the next five." My favorite thing about that line is that he does exactly that with Ed in Season 8.
There is probably literally thousands and thousands of people who do do this role as well and maybe even better. It shows a serious lack of imagination or intelligence when people say things like
I love this scene. I love how everyone's sort of walking over Cox at the beginning like naughty kids in a classroom. It's really powerful the way he gets everyone to shut up just from standing there lookinf pissed- I had teachers who could do that at school! His whole 'I'm accountable' thing is right on, I love it. I swear I hear a variant of this speech in my head every time I'm lazy or half ass something That I need to get done Properly. So thanks doctor Cox for making me feel like crap when I try to slack off On some of the things that are important lol it's definitely helped
"the common decency to TRY and do better at something you supposedly DO?" That line has stuck with me in my career. Everyone likes to brag about what they do (especially doctors, lawyers and engineers). How can you call yourself a professional if you don't even try and do better everyday?
You know looking back on it this scene is a perfect representation of what Doctor Cox was asking for from Ed in Season 8. He wasn't asking for the right answers, he was asking for the commitment to try and want to do better but ultimately he was just lazy and as promised discarded forever one moment, and forgotten about soon after.
"I will forget you forever in the next five seconds" is absolitely brilliant. Making it clear to someone that they are so absolutely pathetic that they are not even worth of one prolongend moment of anger is one of the best Boss Moves i have ever heard.
I love how Nervous Guy gets up and takes of his shirt immediately after Cox tells him to, without hesitating. One of Cox most powerful rants, cause this time he is 100% right. It's still funny though.
Dr. Cox is quite possibly the most badass and scary charecter ever on television. I'd pay to see an angry rant contest between and someone like Tony Soprano
I have on several occasions adopted this for my own purposes, especially the phrase, " one of you perpetual disappointments." The combination of the calm demeanor and the coherent string of insults usually gets results.
This clip illustrates what seems to be a common theme throughout the show -- that a few people (Dr. Cox, Carla, etc.) -- REALLY care about their job, while the rest (JD, Turk, Todd, and usually Elliot) are much more interested in their silly little personal lives.
I would love to see the characters of Dr. Cox, Dr. House, and Dr. Cooper all together in one single episode where they're forced to work together. Oh my god I think the world itself would implode from such epic awesomeness.
This is scene is more profound if you saw the Lottery episode. Where a patient died because everyone else was doing something stupid, resulting in the interns, who did their best, trying to save the poor guy. And Dr. Kelso and Dr. Cox called them out on their crap.
Turns out these doctors were great at what they did irrespective of their flaws, but just like cox in this episode people failed to acknowledge the great things in bvs like Junkie XL's dark portrayal of the batman, the cinematic colour grading and feel to the film....Sure Nolan did great story telling to BB and TDK but Snyder bought the fucking graphic novel fantasy to everyone which Nolan couldn't......so in summary as much as I love cox through the series, just because of your rant I side against him in this respect
i rarely agree with doctor cox's rants; i enjoy them due to the entertainment value, sure, but i find he usually let his frustration unjustly and wrongly. here however, i agree with 100% with what he says.
now i realize why cox is always angry. he's the guy held accountable for every fuckup everyone does. so even if you fuckup once or twice, the collective would be huge.
Funny how we thought it was a joke at first but now we know that when Todd asked if the guy named Danny was hot, he was seriously asking if Danny was hot lol
@@drpinky504 The usual charge would kill someone on a regular rhythm. The reason they shout "clear" when using them is because typically, you'll have multiple people working on a person -- bagging them, giving them epinephrine, doing compressions, the works -- so when you do shock the patient, anyone else still touching the patient gets shocked right along with them. "Clear" means, "get your hands clear out of the way, or you're going with them". So, Dr Cox would have had to be using a very low charge in this scene.
I was only ever this angry one time, people I knew avoided me for literally a week, I was so angry I had migraines from it. I don't remember what it was that set me off, but I was livid.
Every now and then, Dr. Cox isn't just going after someone for the sake of being an ass. Every now and then, he is ripping someone a new one because it is exactly what they need to hear if they intend to be a serious doctor.
This scene is near perfect. Cox reprimanded the shit out of them while also remaining professional. No indivdual insults in classic Cox fashion, just blunt honesty and calling out then arogant interns, telling them to take their jobs seriously because he's the one who will end up taking the bullet for their mistakes and lack of action.... then, when done with calling them all out, he shifts right back into being the saracastic lovable ass he is. John McGinley and the writers absolutely nailed Dr. Cox as a character.
I wish that actors start realizing that maniacally blinking =/= acting emotions. The acting here is great, felt every inch of anger coming from the voice, but that fucking blinking. Meh. All of them abuse it so much. It's like morse code spelling ''I can't act without overused gimmicks''
That was terrifying, and he didn't even go above a librarian's speaking volume.

Honestly calm cold controlled anger is much much more terrifying to me than screaming like a lunatic

I say the world needs a Dr. Percival Cox to give us all the scolding we need from time to time
Absolutely just spine chilling.
I feel like calling people at work perpetual disappointments sometimes, just sounds like such a good insult
Do it during happy hour, calling them that at work in front of the office could backfire.
Had an instructor go off like this in Paramedic school. Like, to the point where it’d have kinder to point a gun at us.
Great mix of controlled rage at their laziness/disinterest & lecturing disappointment demanding better. Hit all the right spots.
I would have loved to see J.D. give exactly the same speech in season 8 - It would have been the perfect Bye Bye Bambi, Hello Doctor Dorian.
I mean he does rant to Cox about how he's sick of the interns' pompous attitudes

Being nervous all the time burns a lot of energy. Doug used to be 300 pounds and just worried the weight right off himself.
