    I actually like that this car doesn't have attitude. Some people might prefer having a car that is quick and comfortable, but doesn't want to tell the world about it. It's an anti-social muscle car. However, a person who really knows their cars will know what it is... a fantastic sleeper.

    That "is" the best part about it - it's a sleeper. Respect it for what it is. There are plenty of cooler looking cars out there that aren't much more, such as the Chrysler 300, but you slap a supercharger on the SS and upgrade some of the engine parts and you have a 5 - 600 hp sleeper. Why drive a cool, sporty-looking car if it doesn't perform like the way it looks? That's why I love sleepers, because the performance contradicts the appearance. And how can you beat the sound of an LS3?

    That is my exact car and color. I bought it new in 2014, I love it. Best car I’ve ever owned. I get stopped all the time with people saying how cool it is. The cool factor is the sleeper appeal, making it black almost ruins that. Having it understated and then blowing the doors off a Mustang Cobra is what it’s all about.

    The only major gaffe in this review is the reviewers' notion that the SS should look a lot more blingy----Like, "Hey Highway Patrol, chicks, and buddies, ......look at me.....looky, looky....." POINT: The SS already looks like a very competent sports sedan, in the German tradition that you invest most of the effort into the drive train, chassis, brakes, etc.
    My Chevelle SS 396 looked a lot like any Chevelle with a 283 in it, except the SS insignia and the crossed flags on the side, indicating the big engine under the hood, along with the fake air scoops, and other minor details. Same story with my Impala SS, pre-1970's vintages.
    Many folks who can afford this SS may appreciate that it DOESN'T look like a boy-toy...... This is a world-class sports sedan for serious drivers...... But if you want the chicks and dudes to drool when you cruise by the local high school, why not simply buy a Corvette??? These reviewers don't seem to understand the "sleeper" concept of sports sedans.....Speak modestly but carry a BIG stick!

    • @hikeskool
      @hikeskool 9 років тому +4

      Yup, exactly. It's kind of frustrating, not everyone is in to bling-bling and tacky plastic everywhere, like fiat's charger/300. That thing looks gross and drives like trash. The SS is the real deal, it's easily the best new sedan available under $60,000.
      Also, people, GM offers black trim pieces for the front grill, side vents, fog light bezels, and upper and lower window trim. These are all OEM pieces you can order FROM YOUR DEALER and install them yourself or have the dealer install them. You can also order "black-out" interior trim as well, all from GM. It's not too terribly expensive either. Retail prices for all the parts are like $2,300 and can be had for less than $2,000 online. For such a small price on a great car this isn't a tough decision, if it suits the owner.

    • @stevenlatimore7776
      @stevenlatimore7776 9 років тому

      Sorry hikeskool but that's where you are wrong not only are they marketed where Max is from but there are also designed and built and have been in production for over 30 years under the name Holden Commodore And have been exporting them since 1998 around the globe. Here is a little history lesson
      Exports
      Holden began to export vehicles in 1954, sending the FJ to New Zealand.[159] Exports to New Zealand have continued ever since, but to broaden their export potential, Holden began to cater their Commodore, Monaro and Statesman/Caprice models for both right- and left-hand drive markets. The Middle East is now Holden's largest export market, with the Commodore sold as the Chevrolet Lumina since 1998, and the Statesman since 1999 as the Chevrolet Caprice.[117] Commodores are also sold as the Chevrolet Lumina in Brunei, Fiji and South Africa, and as the Chevrolet Omega in Brazil.[154][160] Pontiac in North America also imported Commodore sedans from 2008 through to 2009 as the G8. Unfortunately, Pontiac went bankrupt in late 2009 and GM had to shut down Pontiac in 2010.[161] The G8's cessation was a consequence of GM's Chapter 11 bankruptcy resulting in the demise of the Pontiac brand.[162]
      Sales of the Monaro began in 2003 to the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe. Later on that year, a modified version of the Monaro began selling in North America as the Pontiac GTO, and under the Monaro name through Vauxhall dealerships in the United Kingdom. This arrangement continued through to 2005 when the car was discontinued.[163] The long-wheelbase Statesman sales in the Chinese market as the Buick Royaum began in 2005, before being replaced in 2007 by the Statesman-based Buick Park Avenue.[164] Statesman/Caprice exports to South Korea also began in 2005. These Korean models were sold as the Daewoo Statesman, and later as the Daewoo Veritas from 2008.[165] Holden's move into international markets has been profitable; export revenue increased from A$973 million in 1999 to just under $1.3 billion in 2006.[160][166]
      Since 2011 the WM Caprice has been exported to North America as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV, a version of the Caprice built exclusively for law enforcement in North America sold only to police.[167] Since 2007, the HSV-based Commodore has been exported to the United Kingdom as the Vauxhall VXR8.[168]
      In 2013, it was announced that exports of the Commodore would resume to North America in the form of the VF Commodore as the Chevrolet SS sedan for the 2014 model year.
      So frankly if anyone has a opinion on the this vehicle it will be max not that I agree with everything he said as I own one and love it

    I'm an Aussie... and I hate the way my fellow country men embarrass us, beating their chests and get all indignant that "this is an Aussie car man".. what u talking about man ... you Yanks pinch our car and call it an SS... this is an Australian icon man... and it goes on and on... Lets just chill a bit and remember it's the American's that helped give the world the chance to have cars like this around and ones we could simply, and proudly call Australian, even though the engine is 100% American. Just feel proud that the car was actually considered good enough for the US (and world) market... end of story... almost... if you want one of these then buy one now because no cars will be made in Australian within a few years, and that means this car is already consigned to history. GM fans in Australia will be buying Malibu's soon. At least when this happens those people who buy Commodores and promptly replace the GMH badge with a Bow Tie won't have to waste their hard earned... and for you guys that do that... a Commodore is NOT a dam Chevy... hell I don't see Toyota owners putting Lexus badges on their Yaris...!!! ..

Thats actually how Dodge got past all of their transmission issues like what was found in the Sebring. They just stopped making transmissions at all and used Mercedes lol.

      7:25 big difference there between the American and Australian mentality when it comes to car design and what really matters. For an Australian designed car it's what the car can do for you in driving it that matters - an understated almost European look with muscle, not whether it's gangta looking to some turkey looking at it on the street - who cares what they think - it's a good car for the driver and that's it.

    Decent power and platform with average price but the fact that it's a total sleeper.... that's what sells me on it. I adore the fact that it doesn't draw extra attention yet still has the balls under the hood. If I was going for a shock factor, there's a dozen other car companies that can do that for even cheaper.

      Matt Farah's Million Mile Lexus you think that means every GM car design is a product of chevs, holden and buick's brainstorming? you don't know much about GM do you? buick is sitting on their asses using holden and chevy's design while chevy and holden design new cars entirely on their own. for this particular car, holden picked up a dead pontiac model and integrated to their Commodore series calling it Commodore VF SS. if you don't know holden commodore, google it please. chevy has not a thing to do with SS's design. do your own research before assuming everyone else on the internet knows less than you do.

    I completely disagree with with how it's considered uncool just because it doesn't scream "look at me!" That's one of the coolest things about cars like these; always has been. The first gen Taurus SHO wasn't uncool because it looked so very much like the standard Taurus. It was tremendously cool because it had the growling Yamaha power plant and managed to pull away from stock Mustang GTs for years. It was still a shitty Taurus, sure. But it was unassuming and didn't draw attention except from people that knew about them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of the coolest things anybody can do is just be themselves and not care if everybody is looking at them.

      the SS is kinda the same. its like the older chrysler 300 c. boring looking. it just looks like... a car.. nothing special.
      if i had the money and wanted the same thing. id just buy the pontiac g8. which i think looks way better and will be cheaper, and basically the same car underneath lol.

    • @illitero

      neverknows best I never said the Taurus part of the SHO was cool, haha. The upgrades that Ford did to little things like the seats made it comfortable, but otherwise it was a nightmare to maintain because of how shit it was. I owned five and had to work on every one of them from suspension to entire engine pulls.
      I'm with you on the g8 100%. It's a great platform, looks good, and rear wheel drive; I'd be happy with the v6 variant if I could get it haha.

E1, 2 and 3 were great cars and Gen-F has lived up to and beat expectations in my opinion. VF should have come sooner for Holden but at least VE2 kept selling well. I hope to see LT1 engines, A8 and M7 transmissions and a new exterior for Grange added on a Gen-F Series 2, before we loose Australian cars for good.

    I love that this is the ultimate new sleeper. I wanted to buy it for that. When it was first announced in the states the only thing I didn't like was that it only came in an automatic transmission. 2015, they fixed it... In short; GIVE ME NOW!

    I love this thing and yes it had styling in my opinion. If you know the background of this car. It's another Holden coming to America from Australia. Just like the Pontiac G8, Chevrolet Caprice (2017), and 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO.

    Good review. I agree with your "lack of cool" comment. Black it out would be a step in the right direction. Having gone from a stealth grey LS2 CTS V to a diamond white w red interior 300 Srt8 with a 392, the Chrysler crushes the V and most likely the SS in the comments on the street category from young dudes of all races to old guys of the same. The SS has got to be one of GMs best sleepers esp in green metallic. It definitely would appeal to me as a sleeper. Used to own a lite blue Buick T-type 3.8 turbo w a light blue vinyl top and blue velvet interior with a rare column shifter and bench seat that ran 13.0X. SS is the same kind of sleeper but with a nicely appointed interior and handling. Needs magnetic ride to compare to SRT8.

      yes alotta young guys like the SRT 8 300C but I'll take the CTS V over the 300 any day. It's a Cadillac !!!! second has a Vette motor, and the looks are way better than the Bentley wanna be 300. What year was your CTS V ?

      @openplz3000 10 років тому +1

      2006 on the V. On twisty roads I miss the suspension and 3.73s and manual. But the SRT has more of the techy geek features w U-connect that I like. Totally different approaches and like comparing a gin vs vodka martini, they will both get you there quick.

      Nice, but I'll stick with the Cadillac. I must admit though I never liked the first generation CTS-V but i'll take it over the 300 SRT 8

    The stealthiness is what makes it cool, it is what the debadge M5 was 20 years ago. The best part is that they don't hold their value, I am gonna get this when they depreciate.

    *The last time a Chevrolet sedan packed a Corvette engine under the hood and sent the power out the back was more than 15 years ago...*
    Yeah, that's correct, but are we supposed to totally ignore the '04-'06 GTO? Which was arguable 10 million times better than the LT1 Impala SS?
    Or the '08-'09 Pontiac G8? Which unfortunately came out in the midst of a global financial crisis and nobody bought?

      It has to be remembered that the Chevy SS above, the Pontiac G8 and the Pontiac GTO of recent times were all built in the same factory, and it was neither Chevrolet nor Pontiac. The Camaro didn't start life in America either. All of them were developed in Australia, the Camaro being the only one out of that list not built in Australia. Holden designed all four of them, and they never abandoned rear wheel drive in sedans.
      A lot of Americans seem to find the styling bland, but stealth is a good thing. If you want a "loud" body kit, look up the VF HSV GTS. Holden Special Vehicles is the performance division of Holden. They produce the wilder versions of what are family sedans, taxis and police cars in Australia. Corner hard in one of these, and you'll understand why Chevrolet let Holden rebadge one of theirs to sell in America

      The styling is perfect. Loud in 'Merica is for 'Anderthals. Lexus and Infinity sell reasonably elegant subdued cars, and there is no reason GM shouldn't too. Cadillac has some interesting shapes, but those suits don't project the image I wear. Zoot suits of cars. This was my second choice, but I bought a bayemvay.

      Mechknight73 I love Holden's cars. I love Aussie cars in general - they obviously know a thing or two about producing serious performance vehicles, and it's not just GM...both GM and Ford have been putting out vehicles that may as well have rockets strapped to them instead of engines. Ever since I was young and found out what "utes" were, I've been fascinated with cars from down under. It just seems like they're *way* more into making high-performance vehicles out of everyday ones than we in the US are. In fact, we're apparently so out of the loop when it comes to sports cars that GM had to borrow the platform from a 4 door sedan - the Commodore - to bring the Camaro back to life.
      DumbledoreMcCracken
      I agree with everything you said except the "styling is perfect" part. Sure - manufacturers like Lexus, Infiniti, Jaguar, etc., make cars that are discretely styled yet ferocious to drive, but even so, base models of those manufacturer's cars upon which their sportier counterparts are based on still carry with them a certain image and appeal that the SS simply doesn't. My point is this: it looks like _exactly_ like a Malibu, and that's exactly what's I'd consider the picture of a sports sedan. If you're going for the full-on sleeper effect, then this is definitely your car. A Lexus ISF looks almost identical to an IS, but any IS is still a "sexier" car than a Malibu.
      Maybe I'm biased because I don't think the Malibu is a very good looking car to begin with. I think the styling looks confused: a few sweeping curves here, a few harsh angles there, and it looks like it's got a 4" lift kit in the back and lowering springs in the front. I don't doubt that it's a good car, just not my cup of tea.
      In my opinion, they should have based the SS on the Impala. It's styled much more aggressively to begin with, and I think it's just a more handsome and well-styled car all around.

      Tom McKenna Holden can do both loud and subtle. Many of the Commodores started life as a German model adapted to suit Australian conditions, but while they resemble a German model, the deeper you look beneath the skin, the more you realise how much work has been done to them.
      If you want to see what Australian cars are capable of in racing, look up any year of Bathurst from 1964-1995. The cars from this era were based on production cars, and in some of those years, just like NASCAR they had to build a street version of it to be allowed to race it in the series. NASCAR has its challenges, but if you want to see something truly funny, look for "Darryl Waltrip Bathurst lap." I don't know Darryl's racing career all that well, but he's meant to be up there with the likes of Dale Earnhardt. One thing's for sure, he's an entertaining commentator They strapped him into the passenger seat of a V8 Supercar, and let Jason Bright do a lap at race speed. It's hard to say where the hamming it up ends and the genuine fear begins.

      Tom McKenna
      I agree that the rear lift is, relative to the front, unfortunate, and am hoping that effect is deleted from the styling vocabulary soon. A raised back end looked "cool" on my '72 Chevy Malibu 25 years ago, but now I recognize it for the crude effect it levies.
      The familiar '73 Aussie Ford Torino, the xB Falcon, is another example of a period design done better by Australians. While not all Aussie cars have such a nice period balance, during the US post-1972-styling-apocalypse the Aussies were "hitting it out of the park".
