Chevrolet SS Review - Vs Charger SRT8 - (4 Door Muscle Cars Pt. 2) -- Everyday Driver

  • Chevrolet has re-entered the large RWD sedan segment with the new Chevy SS, a variation on the Holden Commodore. Is this the "Four-door Corvette" Chevy thinks it is? And does this car embody American Muscle better than the 6.4L Hemi Charger? The guys blast down straights and through corners in both cars before debating the winner.

      The Srt is absolutley beautiful, obviously you can pull more power out of a LS but the SS just isnt as appealing as the SRT.

      The ss is the ultimate sleeper. Pull up to a car meet and the people will think that is a mom car until you give em a quick rev. Then their tone will change. It is awesome

    Chevrolet SS Sedan HANDS DOWN.. Does they Charger come in a Manual? NO
    Does the Charger come with magnetic suspension? NO Chevrolet SS Sedan has all this and twice the current color lineup for 2015. That is where my mid-life crisis cash would go.

    • @justincoots6261

      And for all that, slower and less power. Badass cars, love the SS. But if we talking stock for stock, the SRT has a bigger engine, more hp and torque, and is faster. They’re muscle sedans, not sports cars- that’s why I wouldn’t be super concerned with handling.

    • @kenrobinson1099
      @kenrobinson1099 3 роки тому +1

      the manual gear box has been lost to 8 or more speed transmissions. that's why the SRT didn't have one. the 8 speed will nuts to nuts smoke a 6 speed all day. You can't even shift a manual fast enough to keep up with the 8 speed.. and BTW. the manual is still offered in the Challenger.

  • @Brian-rs4xg
    @Brian-rs4xg 8 років тому +37

    So, it's suddenly a bad thing that the SS does the job it's supposed to, and isn't ostentatious about it? The Chevy is a fist in a velvet glove.
    That's a good thing.
    And as far as 'entertainment' goes, that happens when you're behind the wheel because most of us don't ride outside the car (unless we're in a Tarantino movie or something).

      In Australia, where the SS is from and has MRC, manual transmission, L77. LS3 and LSA engines and more, they rate better than BMW, Merc and Audi. The HSV Gen-F GTS costs $96,000 here and is loaded with performance goodies including MRC. The E63 AMG is $210,000. With the money you save, you could buy two GTS' or spend it on upgrades to knock the AMG out of the water. There is an after market package available that boosts the GTS from stock 577hp to a massive 777hp!!!

    I am loving this SS sedan the more I see it. At first, I am like why would I buy a new SS at $45,000 when I can get a nice used G8 GXP for less than half the price? What's the difference?
    The SS comes to the market with a splash. Finally, Chevrolet releases an old school 7th Gen Impala SS inspired sport sedan. It comes with nice upgrades across the whole spectrum of car design over the G8 GXP, and it seems to be designed to be relevant for some time to come. I like that there's no gimmick attached to it. It just simply is a rear wheel drive, V8 sport sedan. There was a little outcry at the beginning, coming standard in automatic but a 6-speed manual is coming for 2015.
    IMO, this is a collector car. Its one of the few times in the past TWO DECADES that Chevrolet really went out on a limb to deliver something truly worthy of the SS badging. It truly legitimizes what SS means. In the past, their SS cars just never really hit on all cylinders and perhaps the most disappointing model for the last two generations was the Impala SS - first with a supercharged V6, and then a LS4 V8 (which was nice, but not on a FWD platform). This is the first SS car I've seen in a while that is just fleshed out and done right. Perhaps they could add some different aesthetic packages to make it more aggressive, but I'm totally happy with the way it looks now.
    And to think... there is probably some crack team of engineers at GM right now designing an LS9 version. LOL, I think this is the start of something beautiful.

    FYI - when you say the SS is made in Elizabeth South Australia, what you probably mean is Adelaide, South Australia. Elizabeth is just a suburb of the city of Adelaide. You wouldn't say a car comes from Hamtramck MI, you say it comes from Detroit MI. Sorry to be picky, but Adelaide is my hometown. Aside from that it's a good video! To an Australian it is dumb the way GM has marketed this car in the USA. They market it as top end muscle car but in Australia it is just a V8 family car. The car they should be marketing this way is the HSV VF R8, it has more aggressive styling, magnetic suspension, manual option, more power, better breaks and better interior.

    I appreciate that this review is for the US market. In Australia and New Zealand there is about a $20 -25k price difference between these two cars with the Dodge being the most expensive. The choice here is easy, the Commodore wins the price battle.
    Chevrolet did let down the US market by not taking the Maloo ute and making it an Elcamino and taking the GTS, both on the VF commodore platform, the latter being a supercharged, magnetic ride control version of the SS you tested.
    But then Ford could have done something for you guys with the Boss Falcon, that's a cool car....and I support GM.
    All the same, a cool review.

    The SRT wins it by far.I've driven both of them equipped with the big motor, big power and big body (by todays standards anyway) and the SRT wins big. One point we've all noticed and that's just where the Hell is the Ford ? Not that I personally care much since I've never had much fun in any Ford product (with the possible exception of the nice, but plastic laden Mustang).

    I really love this car. It looks like what the 5-Series should have been. It does need a few things for next model year (some of which will be addressed).
    Engine:
    -6.2L V8 (VVT, SIDI, and AFM) with 460HP and 465LB-FT
    Transmissions:
    -8 Speed Auto
    -7 Speed Manual
    Exhaust:
    -2 Mode Baffles
    Suspension
    Magnetic Ride Control
    Exterior Colors:
    -Silver Ice
    -Shark Gray
    -Iridescent Pearl
    -Black Granite
    -Majestic Plum
    -Fusion Orange
    -Rainforest Green
    -Victory Red
    -Rally Yellow
    -Blue Velvet
    Interior Colors:
    -Jet Black with Pure White Accenting
    -Mahogany with Cream Accenting
    -Titanium Gray with Mojave Accenting
    Also, the Navigation and Advanced Safety Packages should be optional.

      I really wish Pontiac put the Bonneville on the Sigma (STS) Platform for 2006 and put a GTP 3.6L V6 (270HP/260LB-FT), an optional SSEi 4.6L V8 (320HP/315LB-FT), and a GXP 6.0L V8 (360HP/375LB-FT). All paired to a 6-Speed Automatic. GXP with an optional 6-Speed Manual..

  • @chels_one7579

    Hey guys, nice review, you should check out HSV or Holden Special Vehicles. the reason the MRC doesn't make it to the SS is that it was kept exclusively for these models. it's a differentiation in Australia. But I guess you're getting the MRC now... so all is good? The HSV models also had that extra bit of ostentatiousness that you're looking for. Aggressive bumpers, bigger wings, lap timing and G force meters. less chrome more attitude! check out ''HSV GEN-F GTS'' A better competitor to the SRT? or even Hellcat?

There rear bumper is matte finished in grey like the vf but the vfll has a gloss black finish with reflectors on the right and left side plus the lines look a bit more aggressive on the vfll so ur way off plus u spelt commodore wrong smh plus the vfll had more wheel options and nicer handling packages sport comfort and race the vfll are from late 2014 on the my15

    • @phattyhales
      @phattyhales 10 років тому +1

      ***** It is true that the CTS-V is significantly more expensive new (nearly $20k before options) but if you get one that is only a year old and suddenly you are spending the same amount as a new SRT8 or SS. And the gas mileage of the CTS-V is only 1mpg worse than the SRT8 and SS.

      I noticed the other video later. The problem was the one for the SRT was titled in order to show is was part 1 and the video I commented on did not have part 2 on it, thus initially, I didn't know it was part of a 2 part series when I did a search for SRT8 vs SS.

      The SS and the Holden VF Commodore are meant to be subtle in design because the Commodore has always been a family car with a sports design. Check out the G8's original Holden design, the VE Commodore. Now look at HSV E-Series 3 GTS and HSV Gen-F Clubsport R8 SV Enhanced.

    It's a good review but my god, stop calling the SS American and making it seem like it's built with American standards. It's not, it's Australian through and through. It wasn't made because of America (although it did get an equipment bump thanks to you guys), and it was barely even made with America in mind (the VE was the first Commodore to be exported to the USA).
    I mean, it's a good review, and it's interesting to see an American view of a car so ingrained into Australian culture, but the constant talk about how "Chevrolet made it" and how American it is is just wrong and almost a little insulting.

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  9 років тому +20

      +lotto77102 - Sorry you're feeling insulted, as we're well aware of the cars origins. In fact, the opening of this review, the styling discussion, and Todd's closing comments all point out that though this is a Chevy in the US, it's from Australia. Further, Todd's closing thoughts talk about how this car wouldn't be possible from Chevy if Holden hadn't made it. As a result, while we have to discuss it as sold here (as a Chevy) we made no attempts to hide or gloss over the origin and are a bit surprised it offended. No matter what, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
