So excited that you have gotten to “bedtime stories” album… just a fun fact, as you know, Madonna pays homage to many of the women icons that have come before her so her looks are always inspired from the women of the past. This album is paying homage to the look of Betty Davis… I wish I could show you various images of Madonna throughout her career and the women she is paying homage to each of her looks and style… Marilyn is one everyone knows but there are many she pays homage too… in past interview, she said the reason why she does. This is to show the light that these women were nit giving credit of their brilliance and beauty in there a time, and as far as Marilyn Monroe, she is inspired by her sexuality and her ability to make people believe that she was a dumb blonde when in reality she was one of the smartest actresses of the time, but unlike Marilyn Madonna says she will not be a victim. If you have a email I can send you many of her inspirational looks side by side over the years … Madonna used in Harlem has her location for this video because she says that area of New York is overlooked by its beauty in timeless architecture and just the energy and beauty of the people that live there with darker shades of skin tones.. the culture the community and history Harlem has she wanted to showcase it…. Back then Harlem was known to be a rough neighborhood when the video was shot… Madonna wanted to show its beauty..but today it is one of NYC hottest neighborhoods to live in… it even has a H&M store…lol…

Obsessed with Secret back then and still am ❤❤❤ Such an amazing song with a great message! There’s an amazing b-side that didn’t make the album called Let Down Your Guard which IMO it should have as it’s a great song!! I love the Bedtime Stories era… the album is absolutely fabulous!! I’ve said it many times but I’m so happy that you really get Madonna’s work and the meaning behind the songs and videos 😊 Amazing editions to the Madonna fam!!! You ladies are faaaaaaabulous ❤

This song and video is amazing. Though the album Bedtime Stories album didn't have the extraordinary production of Erotica, I think the new jack rnb suited her like a glove. And her voice shone here, where it was a little in the background on Erotica.
It's a shame she was so desperate to get into movies during the 90s instead of focusing in music, we lost out on a few great albums she could've made in between Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light. Music was cute but sadly a turn she never recovered from. The 90s was her at her zenith, and for some reason she just never built on the amazing production and music we knew she was capable of between Justify My Love and her William Orbit collaboration.
Not to mention sounding like a robot 90% of the time for some strange reason. She needs to release the shelved Veronica Electronica album already.

What a strange era Bedtime Stories has been.
I remember that after Erotica few really cared what Madonna did, at least in Italy we remained the most loyal fans. And she made this melancholy record and her image had something nostalgic and classic: platinum hair, a retro way of dressing. This lady has style. I think no artist would have survived Erotica. Madonna moved on, as always...Here we are Ladies, what a great ballad and your smart reactions.

So glad you liked Secret. This was a very big hit in the fall of 1994 and set the tone for her Bedtime Stories album. Onece again a change of direction, or more likely another side of her that she so beautifully showcases with this song and video. The beats are insane, like you said. Thank you again for a fun and great reaction.

she wanted to show that dismal places like Harlem can have nice sides too in this number-the videos of this album are the best of the best, collaboration with Bjork and Baby face was fruitful, the album title song is shown in a New York museum on a screen-timeless, romantic, futuristic , inspired by surreal painters all these show that Madonna is an art expert, places her videos on a meaningful base-they are all here…who would have thought that she was this well-read and educated herself in history of art? now we know it…thanks ladies

Agree with you. The references and influences she draws into her music and artistry are so deep and thought-provoking. Her legacy work from her vast discography and videography are like art painting masterpieces done in mosaic of gleaming gems full of symbolism, meaning and messaging that resonates through time. From many sources, including from her interviews, she is a voracious reader/student of literature on history, the arts, spirituality, socio-political issues. She is not only a patron of the arts but also a creator of art. She has graciously acknowledged and appreciated many of her muses from earlier artists but she has also mentored, collaborated with and influenced many other artists and those who followed in her footsteps. She has a lot of wisdom and compassion that she shares through her artistry and advocacy.
In my book, she is the Da Vinci, Botticelli, Beethoven, Puccini, and James Baldwin of post modern pop music.

Bedtime Stories was an album that had very little promotion on tv shows. Secret, for instance, was only performed on German TV and it wouldn’t be until 2001 that Madonna would add it to her concert. But this is the moment when she starts releasing remix videos! So if you search for Madonna Dan-O-Rama you’re going to find remixes for many of her singles until 2001, including Secret 😊

Madonna’s advocacy for Black, other minorities (Latino/Hispanic, gay, women, etc.) rights and cultural recognition started way early in her career like in her music videos of: 1989 Like A Prayer, 1986 La Isla Bonita, 1989 Express Yourself, 1990 Vogue-and on throughout her career she’s tackling socio-political issues on race, gender, religion, war, prejudice, gun control, more. Her activism and advocacy is as fierce today as in the past.

Hello Emily & Brenda. I absolutely love your "Madonna Journey" reactions, and i've been watching since the very beginning when you guys started, and I just wanted to say that I've seriously have really looked forward to each and every single video that you guys have uploaded. I literally go on youtube every single day just desperately hoping i'll see a new video from you guys. It's the biggest highlight of my day on those specific days!!!!!
Question: You guys have said that you both plan on going to Madonna's Celebration Tour (that shes currently on right now), but I am wondering if that's still currently your plan.... And if so...... Which location for the Tour you plan on going to? I myself live practically right between two of those locations which are "San Francisco" & "Sacramento" in California. Even though both distances are pretty much the same for me, I have chosen to go to the Tour in Sacramento on February 23'rd however because my little Sister actually lives in Sacramento and wanted to go with me since she hasn't gotten to go to any of Madonna's past Tours before! ^_^

Another great song! Lots of people have an opinion about Madonna and a lot of those opinions are not positive. But then again, there are those of us with excellent taste and appreciation for her and her music! The creativity and vulnerability she infuses into her songs is undeniable. Because no matter what subject she's singing about, she's honest and real!
    Excellent reactions 😊

Although this 90s era of Madonna started with her exploration of sexuality, eroticism in her music and artistry, it would also inspire her to write some of her most beautiful and enigmatic ballads like Secret, and the beginning of her introspective, personal spiritual journey searching for answers that she reached and expressed in her 1998 Ray Of Light album/era.
Secret is layered with meanings and influence. Her cover photo for Secret’s single release and edgy look in the black and white video paid homage to one of her early film heroines-Jean Harlow-(died prematurely in 1937 age 26) who in her short 9 years in films became known as the “Blonde Bombshell” and “Platinum Blonde” a leading sex symbol of the early 30s for her portrayal of seductive “bad girl” characters, was “one of the defining” actresses of pre-Code (censorship)era in Hollywood cinema when filmmakers explored, then considered “risqué”, portrayals of strong female characters, “implied sexual innuendo”, romantic, sexual, mixed-race relationships, gender-bending roles, mild profanity, promiscuity, etc. Harlow’s first film which made her known was in 1930-Hell’s Angels-directed by tycoon Howard Hughes. She was also a liberal Democrat who campaigned, raised funds and supported actively the candidacy of Franklin D Roosevelt for president, and Upton Sinclair for CA governor. Harlow’s life and artistry resonated with Madonna.
Madonna’s choice to shoot the video in Harlem, NYC with its diverse, working-class culture was familiar to her late 70s NYC neighborhood in East Village (9 miles apart). Harlem also reminded her of her childhood growing up in Pontiac, a northwest suburb of Detroit, MI.
Although she didn’t directly revealed her “baby’s secret” in the lyrics, the video ended with her going up to her lover’s apt room where she met his young child. Perhaps, this portrayed her own longing for motherhood at this time (she was age 36 in 1994) which she’d attain later in 1996. The lyrics also raised a lot of interpretation and analysis of what the “secret” that “found a way to touch” her “soul” that she’ll “never, ever, gonna let it go..”….she realized that..”something’s coming over me..”. I think this was hinting to her personal, spiritual re-awakening on the secret of true happiness. In her live performance of Secret during the 2001 Drowned World Tour, the big screen stage backdrop played a montage of various people of different faiths undergoing religious, mystical rituals.
Finally, you may want to view (perhaps on your own, if you decide not to do a video reaction) of her 1995 performance of Secret (and Take A Bow) in the popular German tv show Wetten Das. Although she lip-synched this number as reportedly the preference for their guest artists by the show producers, her stunning, beautiful look with long blonde hair was worth viewing. Loving your reaction and Madonna journey.
