Wow Brenda! Your comment... "it takes a lot not to understand it (the message)" is SOOOOO so true. What a wonderful statement. Once again you guys just get it. Again, no other reactor have I've seen get so in-depth as you two do. A lot of those who do re-act are doing Madonna reactions for the exposure rather interested in learning about Madonna's legacy and messages she's driving home. Most are just looking for views, so they will react to her videos, knowing such reactions are popular. What's even more frustrating is how people try to STILL to this day, diminish her career and what she's accomplished simply because she's a woman and also pushes boundaries no one else has. Thank you for this reaction. Thank you for getting it!!

Brenda and Emily this is such an amazing reaction from you ladies. Your conversation and points of view are so spot on. You truly get and respect her journey as an artist and the messages she sends.
I had the same reaction when this song came out and soon after I came out. After watching Truth or Dare, two of her songs hit me so hard Live to Tell and Human Nature. This song is still relevant for her today unfortunately. That one line she sung, even when she was in her early 30's," Did I stay too long"? In a speech, just a few years ago, she said. " The most controversial thing I've ever done, is to stick around". I'm used to the hate she gets since the early years, I ignore it mostly, but sometimes I wonder why? It's what she says" Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about you!". Everything all the haters say will never ever influence my love for Madonna. "Just look in the mirror"!

Love, absolutely love that you two get the message right away. I mean, this song and video sums up all of her, her whole career up to that point. It’s so powerful and full of references to her past and how the press and society took her message, usually somewhat wrong and not the way she said or intended it. It takes an open mind and an open heart to understand and appreciate this kind of message. Thank you for that.

Perfect song, video and reaction. You guys are amazing. You got everything i wanted to say. This video is so smartly done to represent the lyrics but still tongue and cheek and not too serious she's having fun while putting her message across about everything she had to endure during the Erotica era. Good point about the boxes. You guys are so intelligent and just get her, thats why i enjoy your reactions so much. This was the fourth Bedtime Stories single and is a fan favorite as well as of Madonna herself as she frequently puts in her tours. More so than any other single from this album actually. It really does represent her. The line ''Would it sound better if i was a man'' in 1994 was so ahead of its time but Madonna and her message and often music and videos period were mostly ahead of their time.

You are absolutely right on everything about this song. From your interpretation to understanding its meaning after watching the whole erotica era, you two got her message! Although this song failed to make it to the top 40, it has become a staple in Madonna’s career and she has done it multiple times on tour. It really summarises all she stands for. Now, live versions… there is none outside tours 😢 so we’ll have to wait until you get to Drowned World Tour for you to see it

For me, this is when Madonna became a legend. The Erotica album meant so much to me at the time (and still does), but the media and public backlash to the album and the SEX book made me sick to my stomach and was so disheartening. When she released this song and its video, my heart filled with joy and gratitude all over again. Express yourself, don’t repress yourself. I always thought this was the most brilliant clap back of all time. Leave it to Madonna to use art to beat down her detractors.
The message is brilliant, the video is brilliant. Notice how the theme is restriction and confinement. From the skin tight suit, to the cats cradle, and the boxes… where some try and keep her. As usual, you completely get her message. Particularly the bit about not pushing your own hangups on her. She’s not your B, don’t hang your 💩 on her!! I also love the humour displayed here! 😁
    Absolutely NO regrets!

    Yayyy, you’re back!!❤
How amazing is this song & video right!! Madonna had put up with years of hate for being her authentic self, pushing boundaries, educating people through her work and expressing herself. This was definitely as you say, her clap-back! I thought it was so clever how the visuals clearly represented Madonna fighting back at being silenced and being “put back in her box”. Also love how they choreographed the ropes to form a Pentagram as Madonna was being accused of witchcraft and worshipping the devil. Her music being branded “The Devils Music” 🙄 Well… many years later and I made it out unscathed 😅 Did you notice Luca from The Girlie Show and Bedtime Stories live from The Brit Awards? 😍

She has the sexiness, she has the humor (Madonna is a grade A comedienne but it's subtle and so many people miss her humor completely), and she has the intelligence. You're right, this song was a direct FU
to all her detractors from her Erotica/
    SEX book/Body of Evidence era.
    Directed by her longtime video
    collaborator, fashion photographer
Jean Baptiste Mondino (Justify My Love, Open Your
Heart, Love Don't Live Here Anymore,
    Don't Tell Me, and Hollywood)
The concept deals with boxing people
    in, repression/oppression.
    The gimp mask, tight vinyl
body suit, ropes, and. corset, etc.
    The bondage theme aesthetic was
directly inspired by 1950s fetish artist John Willie.
The Human Nature music video along
with her Bedtime Story music video was recognized as being artistically and culturally significant by New York's Museum of Modern art.
It's one of my very favorites from her 1990s era.
So glad you both understand and appreciate it.

Extraordinary video and choreography, the song is very 90's R&B and it sounds amazing, one of my favourites of the Bedtime Stories album. I remember asking in 1991 to young persons about the "justify my love" video and the answer was something like that Madonna was finished for going too far and pushing boundaries too much. This song it's like an answer to all these persons that thought she had her career finished or criticized her. I see that a lot of comments tell you the same, but it's the truth, your reactions are perfect, you understand very well the messages and know how to give a good interpretation of the songs and videos. Also it's clear that are from the bottom of your heart and not made as an obligation. Comparisons aren't good, but other UA-camr reactions seems that are made obliged. Instead of that, your reactions are a delight to watch cause are honest, and that is noticed by us, the UA-cam viewers. Kisses 😍😍😍

Yes!! ❤ that you got her message completely. Just when her critics thought she was mellowing and backing down on her activism in this Bedroom Stories era, she hits them with this R&B/hip hop rap song/video as a pushback for all the vilification and condemnation she’s received for her artistic exploration of sexuality and eroticism in the previous Erotica era. Sure, she’s defended and explained herself before against the ignorance, double standard and hate that bigots have directed at her through interviews and public statements, but this is the first time (and not the last one) when she decided to write a sarcastic song to memorialize her thoughts in response to her detractors and to reaffirm her core advocacy of-“Express yourself, don’t repress yourself…absolutely no fear, no regrets!”.
So fascinating is her use of artistic elements to enhance her messaging in this video: the choreography inside confined spaces to signify her critics’ attempts to “box” her in; the skin tight clothing, the chains, bondage and grabbing to portray attempts to restrain her taboo-breaking artistry.
She then reminded the pop music world that she’s a product of the counterculture movement of the 60s carried over into the 70s (morphed into the 80s and 90s) when America’s youth and left wing culture rebelled against the establishment, authority, corporate consumerism/materialism, mainstream culture-that fueled the anti-Vietnam war peace movement, the Civil Rights movement, women’s liberation movement, sexual liberation, anti-religious secularization, etc. that further spun-off sub-cultures, lifestyle of the hippies, gay rights/pride; then from White working class, economically depressed inner city of New York and London came the punk rock genre with their confrontational, profane style, metal studded black leather, accessories and chains (S&M) fashion look that Madonna and her dancers used in this video; and from the Black ghettos of the South Bronx was born hip-hop rap music with their angry, equally profane slang lyrics, with the fierce, Black identity/pride braided corn rows hair that Madonna styled in this video as a way to honor and empathize with their defiance and struggle against prejudice, hate and marginalization. Her artistry, activism and advocacy embody the rebellious spirit and much of the ideology of the counterculture movement.

I liked hip-hop Madonna circa early 90s, starting with "Justify My Love," then "Erotica" and a few other songs on that album, and then this Bedtime Stories album which was the most hip-hop/R&B of all. I knew all the rap songs she re-sampled lol - "Human Nature" uses "What You Need" by Main Source. "Justify My Love" is a Public Enemy track. She's got a song "I'd Rather Be Your Lover" that's straight-up "Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down" by Brand Nubian. I mean her producers basically just took the exact mixes and put Madonna's vocals over them, check it out.

Great reaction, ladies! This is also one of my favorite videos from Madonna! And what a great artistic way to deal with what must have been her frustration from all of the flack that she received from Erotica and her SEX book!

You don t have to miss "You'll see", such a sequel of Take a bow", "Love don ' t live here anymore " rearranged like a slow ballad. "Love don t live here anymore "is a cover and the original of her revisited you can find it in the "Like a virgin" album. Cheers from Italy

i love your video reactions about Madonna videos. In the video the word "shit" when she sings " i'm not your bitch don t ..your shit on me" is hidden by a heavy sound effect, i think because in 80's and 90's , in the videos those type of words are seen too heavy for the audience, but in the album you can hear the sentence clear without censure. In the video appears Luca Tomassini, a famous coreograph of videos , like this, yes he is the coreographer of the video, he is italian , LIKE ME ...:-) and you can see him in the Girlie Show just as one of the dancers of the tour

Yes! We saw Luca in the video (we should've mentioned it at the time). He's such a talented performer and choreographer. That's another thing we really love about Madonna - She always surrounds herself with the most talented people! ❤️

ICONIC song…. The part she says “you made a track for silly fools” was about her long time gay DJ Junior Vasquez friend who had done many dance remixes of her music… he took a voice message on his answering machine at home from Madonna and made a song out of it to play in the gay clubs called “ If Madonna Calls”… in the song the vocalist says “ if Madonna calls disconnect her”….. this would end their friendship..

It was such an answer to all the volatility after Sex, Erotica and a toxic appearance on David Letterman. She has remarked how he always made sexual jokes about her but when she owned the conversation and turned the tables people were outraged. My favorite line at the end “would you like me better if I was ?” I love the sentiment- once you apologize to the mob they’ll move on to another criticism. As always she looks phenomenal.

This was her response to the backlash she recieved for the SEX book and the Erotica era. But it's most of all a direct respobse to David Lettermann and the infamous 1994 interview where he tried to put her down and shame her and ridicule her for being sexual. As she said in that interview "you always talk about my sex life on your show, and now you don't wanna talk about my sex life when I'm on your show". Knocked it out of the park.

    • @FindingMadonna

It was definitely about Sex/Erotica as well as Justify My Love and Blond Ambition. I never really thought it was a reaction to the Letterman appearance specifically, but I bet that was also on her mind since she was probably writing/recording this not too long after that.

I loved this reaction and discussion. This song and video truly were a statement, speaking directly to those who had tried to "box" her in.. as displayed in this video.. as a woman, who shouldn't talk about her fantasies, hang around past the age of 35, and have complete control over her life.. as an artist, who has free control over what she expresses through that art (challenged at every turn, which just made more people notice). She is boxed, bound, and taunted, yet she keeps defying. Once again, your discussion throughout has made me think about the lyrics (thank you so much for talking about the lyrics the way you do!). Yes, things would be very different if she were a man. And yes, many project their own issues onto what she is doing at any given moment. One thing that is very aggressive in people's criticism about her now is her age, as if it's the greatest sin of all. The funny thing is, that started when she was in her 30's. I missed you these past few days. Thanks for doing what you do! ❤❤

Nice reaction! Well, there's no live performance of this song but from concert tours, so perhaps you may move to her next era which is the ballads compilation album "Something to Remember". The first song we knew of it was "I want You", a collaboration with british electronic band Massive Attack. The song was a cover originally recorded by Marvin Gaye. Amazing song.

For the live version, I think the best one is from the Madame X Tour, however it doesn't get the message across as the MDNA version. And then the Sticky and Sweet and Drowned World tours have their peak moments too 😁 Or even the Sam Smith cover is good.

I appreciate you ladies so much for helping me turn a corner on this song a bit. I’ve always enjoyed it sonically and visually but felt the message was immature and juvenile. In her defense I think for people as famous as Madonna, the sheer deluge of other people’s opinions can be overwhelming sometimes and it can be exhausting trying to discern between fair criticism and pure hate. But to me, the song always felt like the opposite of “boss bitch” because she’s not showing indifference. The Sex book was mostly a gratuitous act of exhibitionism and people rightly called her out for it. There was some artistic value to it of course but was she mad at the haters or was she simply mad that her previous era wasn’t critically/commercially acclaimed? I appreciate your analysis of the song though and can see why this felt like an important statement for her at the time.

Yes, that's a great answer to the bigotery, press, to all people who treated her as a whore in the Eroitca Era for having an opinion, for express herself, for having sexuality!! Till then, a pretty woman in the music industry, dominated by men, was used as a sex object, and Madonna changed the rules: she was a sex subject, as a woman she has also sexuality but she owns and decided about her sexuality!
I like how in the video she use also the bondage, boxes-cages, ropes, the tight latex clothes, etc that they critizised in the Eroitica Era, but this time to critizise those who tie you up, who put you in a box and repress you, who don't let you express yourself and live your life free...at least I interpreted so in this video...
Absolutely no regrets...therefore I like also Madonna...

The men at the time put out videos that used women as sex objects. Think Warrent's Cherry Pie video, Sam Kinison's Wild Thing, or the myriad of rap videos. Non of them got any kind of backlash. She took control over that narrative and her own sexuality. Instead of women being a man's sex object, she was saying women can be in control of their own sexuality and shouldn't be ashamed of it and can put it out there just like the men were doing. Besides all the stuff she whispers, one of my favorite lines in this song is "I'm breaking all the rules I didn't make." That is a powerful statement. Basically, Down with the patriarchal, religious dogma that hold women back from having any control or any say in their own sexuality.
Btw, just a fun tidbit, that was her own dog 😁
