Well, the only mechanical thing I've ever done to a car is change tires.
Today, thanks to your video, I removed the seats and changed the filter. Car went from stalling every start, and every other stop light to running perfectly. I just put 50 km in the city without a drop in rpm, never mind an actual stall. Appreciate the video, dude. I literally wouldn't have been able to do it without it

Hiya George..love your videos, so methodical, and very informative for people who are not up to speed on working on their own cars..
Little story for you...and other posters on here...
About 15 years ago, ex girlfriend has mini one diesel, with "warranty" by BMW.. she took mini into Bmw( can't say which one for reasons stated later, but is a city in South Wales but not Cardiff, very, very close though)service was meant to be a free one, later in day she asked me to drive her down to pick up mini, on way, we got a call saying car was nearly ready but would we want wipers done,(squeaking) and front and rear brakes needed attention, ensuing conversation revealed wipers were £50!! Front pads, not including discs were £200 fitted, rears were £300!!we declined the offer...when we picked car up, "free" service turned out to be £400...girlfriend or me not happy.
I fitted new pads/discs all around for less than £125...only problem was, had trouble getting rear offside wheel off, corroded to hub...they hadn't removed it during service
2 weeks later, mini developed fuel starvation problem, found out was filter, (in offside rear wheel arch) quick run to local spares factor and car was running perfect :) then we checked the invoice for service, fuel filter was charged(with labour ) at about £25/£30...so we went to BMW to talk to service department, managed to get my concern noted by service manager, whereupon I showed him filter I took off car with same date of manufacture as the car...about 5 years old!!(diesel remember)...he said that they lots of filters in storeroom with that date on, so I asked him very politely to show me just 1 with same date before i went to local trading standards/newspaers....and not as heavily corroded as one I took off car..I was then escorted off premises...and told never to darken their door again...at next table to me was a large (very) bloke, leaning on table, with knuckles and complaining that he had just paid for full service on his 7 series, think it was over £2k? and when he checked, they hadn't done a lot of the work invoiced,....he got escorted to another room, and i could still hear him shouting when I was outside building....we got rid of mini about a year later....sorry was a bit long everyone..but stopped me buying any BMW product
    Good luck George.

Great video and thanks for your tips! I found it handy to put a shop towel over the assembly after initially loosening the green clip and before its final release. Also, be mindful of any subsequent downward movements of the assembly into the fuel tank, as it can spray fuel from the filter housing.

Just wanted to chime in with if your mini makes that annoying thumping sound from the fuel tank, this is the culprit.
Here in America, we just swap out the entire fuel filter module it's called. Simply because the top plastic cap is known to develop cracks, and leak. And they don't sell that item separately. At least not here in America.

In regards to the where the fuel line connects to the housing. be careful when disconnecting the line there are little Orings and a rubber retainer that can fall out and cause the line to spray fuel everywhere.

How do you know the cap to the housing is on all the way? There was two notches on the bottom and one on top that was supposed to be in between but I tried and tried and cut my hand trying with a screw driver to get it back on its on so snug I think its not going anywhere the top knotch is to the first bottom one but not past it yet in just going to put it back together I dont think ive seen anyone on youtube tighten it that much or emphasise that at all.
He mentions it at 9:44 its supposed to be like ,', but mine is like , ,' I legit cant make it go any further.
Update: I got a warning on my car saying I needed to tighten the gas cap, this was because the pressure had changed inside the fuel reservoir. To get the pressure back to normal I had to open the gas cap and push that metal door open inside the place where you pump gas to let the pressure kindof normal out. Then the warning went away but I started smelling gas really bad. I ended up taking the thing apart again and using a plumbers strap wrench to tighten it all the way correctly. After making sure the seal was on right I closed the thing up with that ring and the smell went away. I would recommend one of those strap wrenches to anyone doing this replacement. Trying to hold that plastic canister thing thats covered in gas with your hand while tightening with the screw driver is nearly impossible and I actually broke a piece of the canister off trying to do so.

Great Video - I decided to do the same regarding the Large seal, in that I installed it to the tank sorround first. I did put a small amount of vaseline on the inside first though to stop the filter housing pushing it into the tank. Seen quite a few posts where owners have struggled to push the housing in and rely on the screw ring to push it into place which just doesnt work. Also I hope you did put the small return spring in before the filter as in the video it looks like it was dragged out with the paper towel during cleaning.

    • @chrishartley1210
      @chrishartley1210 Рік тому +2

@@markeprice4295 I was thinking that since the fuel has such low viscosity it would not present much pressure drop unless the filter was blocked and therefore would not need a particularly strong spring. If that's the case then without the spring the filter is in permanent bypass.

The spring is there to prevent that annoying thumping sound that would happen on pre LCI cars on shutdown. Unlike the oil filter I’m not sure there is too much to get clogged, fuel is clean, the tank is plastic if the car was running without any fuelling issue, it was probably still doing its job. I understand it if why you’d do it if you want to run an older one, long term.

The first BMW mini was already in the early design stages when BMW bought Rover in 1994, and continued through its development stage by Rover with very little input from BMW as it was intended to be the replacement for the aging Rover metro/100, given that along with the fact the car is built within the old Rover factory and BMW acquiring the intellectual property rights to all existing Rover group vehicles at the time I wouldn't be surprised if the seals are still being made with Rover being embossed on them when they are being made, seems little point in changing the tooling for manufacturing of a part no one but a mechanic will see.

After replacing my fuel filter the check engine light came on this morning (it was colder than usual I think)
The code said something like there was low pressure or a pressure leak in the fuel line or something. I realized I think the metal ring that fastens the housing down was not on all the way so I really hammered the bushing down tight.
My question is: do you think you can over tighten that metal bushing and strip the threads that it screws onto? Are those threads plastic?
I wonder if what seems like over tightening is just actually barely tightening it at all in reality since in using a screw driver and hammer instead of the proper tool. This is frustrating because I dont want to damage my car.
Did you have the check engine light come up? Thank you for your help!

provided with the knowledge that the seal is apparently intended for diesel, the question arises whether it is not wise to also replace the seal of the fuel pump. In the end, there are two seals in the package. And, could the fact that the seal was apparently for diesel fuel also be the cause of the strange black color of the fuel? Is the black seal slowly dissolving?

@@GeorgeAusters I agree with you on that. In the meantime I have found several other UA-cams with a report about the way of changing the fuel filter. In all cases there is black colored fuel and a totally black filter in the Mini tank. Some people don't even notice, or think this color is normal. In all my cars over the past 50 years I have never found fuel filters that were this color. Sometimes slightly brownish, but never black.

MG Rover had the idea of the new MINI and essentially engineered the R50, when BMW took over, they used Chrysler Tritec engines instead of rover K series the MG Rover engineers put in the car. A few design tweeks and BMW released the car. A good proportion of the R50 Mini is MG Rover, so it doesn't surprise me that a few of these bits are carried over. Why design a new seal if this one hasn't had any problems I guess 🤷
