54 here, and for me the lyric 'hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way' didn't register with me much in my younger years. Now it's the most important lyric of the song for me. With age comes understanding that NO ONE really has a clue what this existence is; it's all just hoping, desperately, that the people you love come to their end peacefully and that you yourself can get by alone once they are gone. Some cultures fight this knowledge with other forms of introspect, while most English (West) cultures just 'pray' to some unknown entity, or they keep it all bottled inside. This is usually the song where newer listeners to Pink Floyd realize that David Gilmour isn't your typical lead guitarist. His playing, as revealed so clearly in this soaring, masterful solo, is full of emotion, passion and otherworldly skill. Y'all need to check out his solo work as well. His guitar work on those albums is beyond compare.
Oh, forgot to mention that David is the main singer on this, as well as many other PF songs. The second voice is that of keyboardist Richard Wright. His singing gets overlooked sometimes because of his guitar work, but his voice is amazing as well.

Also, in this song, the last portion of this track (after the line "Wish I had something more to say" is a reprise of the earlier cut on the album, "Breathe." Arguably one of the greatest rock albums EVER! It spent 972 consecutive weeks on Billboards Top 100 albums, that is essentially a little over 18 years. This album is #1 when it comes to the Billboard list, no other album comes close. It is on the top 20 list of best selling vinyl records of all time. The first time I heard Dark Side of the moon it was 1974, with four other friends in a small apartment in Sacramento the room was dark except for a blacklight and lava lamp (I know stereotypical) had just shared two joints and on went the album, I won't say it was a life changer but it definitely an eye opener as to what music could be at least for me.
Was that you? You forgot the incense, glow posters, and stretched out 7-up bottle. Lying on the floor, on my back, with headphones, just letting PF take me on the journey. I'll turn 70 this month and the lyrics have become more potent than the bong hit I took. Peace.
Lol, so true. In my mind's eye, I can still see me and my mates late at night with the lights off and the breeze and stars through the open windows...."ticking away the moments that make up a dull day".... Gone
Pink Floyd is a great English rock band formed in London in 1964. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time. "Wish You Were Here", "The Dark Side Of The Moon" & "The Wall" are among the best-selling albums of all time. They have a huge library of music. Some of their hits were "Money", "Hey You", "The Great Gig In The Sky", "See Emily Play", "Mother", "Not Now John", "On The Turning Away", "High Hopes" etc.
My views of the meaning of the lyrics of this song (based on many different people's interpretation) are: The initial clock blast signifies birth of a newborn and explosion of a new life. The subsequent musical entry has the heartbeat strengthening and speeding up to show the vigor of childhood. It then goes into the lyrics which shows that teenagers have no concept of time and thereby waste it doing frivolous stuff. They then reach middle age and the heartbeat slows and there is the recognition that time is going by and that the clock may run out before you have achieved anything of significance. And finally as an old man sitting by the fire place awaiting death (and the tolling of the iron bell) signifying the funeral for him after he died. I find the treatment of the accompanying music and changes of timing within it, match perfectly with the typical human existence from the exuberance of youth to the regrets of old age. A testament to the musical and lyrical genius of Pink Floyd!
This album came out in 73’ , I was 13 ..50 yrs listening to this album , I recommend you take the time and listen to it properly which is non stop , enjoy !
Most Pink Floyd albums were recorded in such a way that each song blends directly into the next one. To get the best “vibe” they need to be listened to continuously, first song to last, no skipping tracks. I think my favorite lyrics from the song are: “And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death”, so profound and lyrically perfectly expressed by guys in their mid-late 20’s.
You might wish to take a moment to read the lyrics after you’ve listened, because the lyrics in PF are VERY important. And don’t worry about becoming “too philosophical” with PF; they ARE often very deep, and touch on ineffable feelings around mortality, time, and the human condition. They are a serious band. No love songs here. That’s why you hear some fans talk about how PF is “life changing” for them. It’s music to make you think (and obviously to get stoned with ✌️). And PF fans love to hear from reactors how they interpret the lyrics…as well as the emotional depth of the instrumentation and Gilmore’s superlative playing. So, your musings on meaning is very important. ……PF is all about “meaning”.
Here is a pink Floyd song that will blow your mind. Great gig in the sky at pulse concert . When I was in the navy I got to attend this concert. By far the best concert that I have ever attended.this song stands out above them all. Please react to this song for this retired navy vet
I got to see Pink Floyd in the Cleveland Stadium in 1977. 88,000 tickets sold and most showed up. What a great night that was! Oh! and it was only $13/ticket.
The crowd is just full of us 'old dudes' I'm 69 and first listened to Pink Floyd in 1968 when I was 14 (Atom heart mother). You will find if you listen to the album in it's entirety the songs flow together in a theme. 'Darkside of the moon' is from birth to death. You missed the heartbeat that is hidden in every song on the album. Your just starting out so enjoy the ride.
It is indeed like a rock orchestra. In the fact the entire album is like a symphony with various movements, not individual songs. Each track flows into the next one without a break. There is a reason this is one of THE top selling albums of all time, it is pure musical and lyrical genius. You must listen to the whole album from start to finish. The track before this is highly unnerving and electronic, and depicts a nightmare about crashing in a plane, and as the sound of that explosion dies, those alarm clocks wake you up from the nightmare. Then after this track is an incredible depiction of facing death - in stages, disbelief, anger, depression and finally acceptance. No words, only an incredible human voice used like an instrument . You really should listen to it next. (The Great Gig in the Sky)
It's always amazing to see new fans of the music i listened to as a school kid with in the 60s and 70's. i think my life is richer with having this music. Thanks.
I’ve been listening to this song for over 40 years, when I was a kid it was a good song but now that I’m 50 it’s one that will make me break down and cry when I’m in the right mood for it. This is a song about how short life is, how quickly it passes you buy until time is gone and it’s all over. This song is great instrumental. However, it’s the lyrics that are really important, Pink Floyd’s lyrics are very important to the song overall.
Yeah, Pink Floyd's songs all have a deep meaning and because first time listeners are so in Ahh of the music they don't really catch the meaning of the song. You should definitely pay attention to the lyrics and for sure they can all mean something different to everyone. To me this is such a strong verse in this song maybe because the first time I heard it I was partaking in mushrooms😊 "And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death" The great gig in the Sky follows Time on the album. It's totally diffrent than anything you have ever heard but I promise you it'll blow your mind. I won't try and influence your perception but in the beginning of the song listen closely to the man talking
Love you guys' reactions. Fun little fact that no one may have yet mentioned to you: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album spent 724 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Magazine Top 200 albums charts, from March of '73 through the last week of April of '88.
I've listened to this song since I was in my teens but it wasn't until I was in my late 40's that the message behind the song (time is fleeting/ life is short) really hit home.
I still love the song, but in my 60s this song is cause for deeper reflection still. I wish I could say it doesn't bring up a lot of melancholy in the reflection, but I guess that's life as judging life in retrospect is easier than living life at the time.
You have to listen to this album from beginning to end in a dark room with your eyes closed. You really can't pluck a song out of the album and listen to it on it's own You really need to listen to this album without interruption. That's the way the album was produced and therefore to get the full effect you need to listen to it as a whole and not just individual songs.
Bought this album with my pocket money when it first came out, I'm now 58 and still playing it although my original album is now unplayable through being worn, so had to buy a second one, I have it on CD but nothing beats vinyl, it always makes me smile how after all this time a new generation of listeners are picking up the batton to this masterpiece, have a look at their performance at the Live 8 concert 🇬🇧
When this song came out I liked because it was a great song. As I got older the lyrics brought a tear to my eye and still does. When you are young, that never enters your mind. It is amazing how Pink Floyd and the Beatles could convey that message when they were very young.
Wish You Were Here is another great song. I love the live version, but I recommend listening to the studio first so that you can be extra amazed when you watch the live.
The next song after this one on the album, "The Great Gig in the Sky" is the only song _EVER_ that makes me cry every single time. You owe it to yourself to hear the original studio version. There are live versions out there, but they all pale in comparison to the original.
Pink Floyd is really a genre unto themselves. I will say, the strangest, most peculiarly odd yet strangely mind boggling song I have ever heard is a Pink Floyd experiment. From the Ummagumma double album, the song Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict is one that needs to be heard to be believed. Might be worth a reaction.
With pink Floyd the lyrics give you the message and the music gives you time to digest them before the next lyrics. This about life and how you time is relentless don't waste it. This leads directly into the great gig in the sky which is the turmoil and exceptance of death. Legendary song.
One of the greatest songs in any genre, it becomes more relevant as the years pass. Seeing Dark Side of the Moon live was very intense and emotional, they were the best shows (4 times) I ever saw. Do Echoes Live at Pompeii, it is in 2 parts and will freak you out! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶
This was my end of the night winding down album back in 75 and 76. I would get home around midnight or one and have to get up at 5 to get ready for work and I would put this in my 8 track player in my car with my headphones and listen to it until I was ready to sleep. Yes, I put a headphone jack in my car in 1975. It is hard to listen to on here one song at a time because the album is set up where one song flows right into the next. Great relaxation when you need to turn down the energy.
After listening to this song for 40 years I've come to think it's greatest song ever wrote. It hits me differently now then it did at 35. It hit me differently at 25 then it did at 35 and 15. The song is timeless. It never gets old. It is as relevant today as it was in 1972. It will be as relevant in 300 years as it is today. Is there another song like it?.... Not that I know of.
Dude the song about human life beginning to end. Pink Floyd need that for a couple elderly blues musicians. Listen to the early tracks. They were and are what are the super groups in our lifetime
Floyd was the first concert I ever saw. In 1973. It was their Dark Side Of The Moon Tour. I was 13. My hippie, stoner brother took me to see them. It changed my life and made want to be a musician, which I still am today---50 years later. Classic band and there will not be another one like them. I saw them twice more, their Wish You Were Here Tour and their Animals Tour. My teen years during the 70's was a fantastic musical landscape and I was fortunate to traverse its peaks and valleys. Nice reaction guys.
We cover both 'Time' and 'Comfortably Numb' in our band... great classics. The album 'Dark Side of the Moon' deserves to be heard from start to finish. One of the very, very greatest albums ever made. It never ages. Songs of life, death, madness... "And then, one day you find, ten years have got behind you No-one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun..." This is how most people experience life. Incidentally, Floyd's 'psychedelic' era was mainly beforehand.
I have been listening to Pink Floyd for almost 38 years, and it changed my perception of life after listening DSOTM album. Still one of the top 5 albums ever produced
Pink Floyd lets the music breath. That is something you do not hear today......the beginning is very trippy. They are the perfect blend of bluesy, psychedelic rock with prog.
So firstly, it makes me so happy to see people from a younger generation genuinely enjoying music before their time. It’s so cool. If you want suggestions, just listen to the whole album. It’s only about 40 mins long but it’s, rightly, a masterpiece. One of the best engineered, produced, composed, arranged, played, sung, and presented albums of all time. It stayed on the top 100 billboard charts for 14 years, which I think says a lot! So lovely and heartwarming to see you guys reacting to classic music.
I won’t go on, but the album is essentially one continuous piece of music that shifts through different moods and vibes and it is so, so satisfying. Totally not suggesting that you do a react video to the whole thing, but I think you’ll really enjoy it in your personal listening time. Enjoy!
I am 67 years old and time really flys and the older you are the faster it goes. Dark Side of the Moon was one of the first albums I bought and it was definitely an experience. And I still love it.
Every year that has gone by since I first started listening to this band at 14 it keeps digging its roots deeper into my soul. Floyd might be the most connected I've ever felt to music ever
"Dark Side of the Moon" was a concept album, telling a full story....lie back in the dark with your headphones on, and play in from beginning to end...I wore out to vinyl copies over the years
Any track From the Pulse concert is absolutely amazing. Too hear these tracks live....PF outdid themselves with this tour in 1994. Best concert I've ever attended!!
"Comfortably Numb" in its place on the wall fits in just like "Time" does here on Dark side of the Moon .... each song fits perfectly where it's at . Listening to the whole DSOTM you'll notice continuing concepts throughout every song ... from one to another ... another good thing to try and find the lyrics ... whats being sung is so important in Floyd songs
I never get tired of hearing this song (or this album). The artistry in it will help it endure over time (no pun intended). You are right to point out the keyboard: David Gilmour is rightly praised for his guitar work, but Richard Wright's keyboards and vocals (on the slower parts) each contribute to the power of the song. Don't sleep on Nick Mason's drumming; his brilliance is in the empty space he leaves while maintaining fitting rhythms. Roger Waters' lyrics (and, yes, his bass playing) deserve respect also. Then there's the entire production of this album: Alan Parsons' engineering is hard to top, and Storm Thorgerson's and Hipgnosis' visual designs for the album were just right. I hope you get around to other PF material on your own time (again, no pun intended). Thank you for this!
I cannot recommend enough that you keep listening to Pink Floyd. There's something different about them that I honestly can't put into words, and I've been trying for decades. Their music has to be experienced. Transcendent is the perfect word for Pink Floyd. Even their hard stuff is beautiful.
63 year old and grew up in Pink Floyd as well. Some of their music is actually ingrained into my soul. Especially dark side of the moon and wish you were here
"Dark Side of the Moon" is one of the first "Concept Albums." It's not a collection of songs, it's an audio movie. You need to listen to it start-to-finish to get the whole experience. Preferably in a dark room, doing nothing but listening. There's a reason it stayed on the album charts for most of its 50-year life.
Anyone that had the good fortune of ever seeing a live Pink Floyd concert including myself would not only rate it as the best concert they ever attended but one of the most memorable experiences ever!
This album came out when I was 10 years old and I have been hooked ever since. This song show cases the talents of all 4 men in the group the wonderful keyboards of the late great Richard Wright, the Guitars and vocals of David Gilmour, The Drums and percussion of Nick Mason, and the Bass and of course the lyrics of Roger Waters,,
Great track with the most meaningful lyrics. Try listening to the whole of "Dark Side of the Moon" from start to finish without a pause, with headphones, lying down in a dark room!!!
My dad brought this home on 8 track in 73 ..at the age of 4 my mind was blown... Huge fan ..saw the pulse concert ..etc...the album is a a must from state to finish ...and u may like ecos live at Pompeii..✌️❤️

They are from Cambridge.
Thank you CHATGPT + WIKI
My views of the meaning of the lyrics of this song (based on many different people's interpretation) are:
The initial clock blast signifies birth of a newborn and explosion of a new life.
Pink Floyd is fine art.!!
Most Pink Floyd albums were recorded in such a way that each song blends directly into the next one. To get the best “vibe” they need to be listened to continuously, first song to last, no skipping tracks. I think my favorite lyrics from the song are: “And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death”, so profound and lyrically perfectly expressed by guys in their mid-late 20’s.
Dark Side Of The Moon is 51 yrs. old in the Spring of 2024.
You guys need to check out US & THEM from the same album.
Just close your eyes and blast off to that other dimension with Pink Floyd
This album, Dark Side of the Moon, is still in my top 10 favorite albums. Pink Floyd is definitely a vibe...
'Hanging on in quiet desperation; Is the English way' is one of the great lyrics.
The lyrics are half the experience to any Floyd song!!!
I'm in my 60s loved Floyd since 68 and I'm still catching meanings in phrases.
I'm 67 too. And yes, as ti 2:05 me goes on, this song really takes you through the journey of life from beginning to the end.
This is the best-written song in history. The greatest song on the greatest album of all time.
It's great to see young people digging on Pink Floyd.
6:18 is the best part of the song imo; gives me the chills every time when those backing vocal come in. Feels like the clouds parting for the Sun.
Pink Floyd - Mother . The Wall , The Machine, Learning to Fly.
Every song blends into the next one on DSOTM. Here, Time immediately flows into the reprise of the song Breathe.
The lyrics are masterful. Without question one of the greatest songs ever written. you need to re-listen to it.
When you’re young the depth of the lyrics mostly go unnoticed. When you’re older they hit you like a sledgehammer.
Once you can count your life in decades instead of years you are beginning to get old.🙈🙉🙊
It is indeed like a rock orchestra.
To me this is such a strong verse in this song maybe because the first time I heard it I was partaking in mushrooms😊
"And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death"
The great gig in the Sky follows Time on the album. It's totally diffrent than anything you have ever heard but I promise you it'll blow your mind. I won't try and influence your perception but in the beginning of the song listen closely to the man talking
56, heard this young. The story of my life.
The stand out part of this song ate the hard hitting and so true lyrics
Welcome to the rabbit hole of pink floyd 😮
Other bands come and go, but there is always Pink Floyd. They are timeless.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I - V, and VI - IX. Mind blowing soundscapes.
Lyrics and heart beat - so important as well!
Yes; very strange and inventive. If you partake, I suggest turning all the lights off and turning up "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun".
Lots of trips listening to Pink Floyd.
With pink Floyd the lyrics give you the message and the music gives you time to digest them before the next lyrics. This about life and how you time is relentless don't waste it. This leads directly into the great gig in the sky which is the turmoil and exceptance of death. Legendary song.
Pink Floyd is Awesome - Thank You guys.
Our pleasure!
"And then, one day you find, ten years have got behind you
No-one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun..."
This is how most people experience life.
Enjoy!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they may have a future in the musical world
Greatest Album of all time! and only should be listened to in its entirety.
i had my 64th birthday last saturday 23/07/23 life long Floyd fan , and i can assure all of you that yes " every year is getting shorter "
"Dark Side of the Moon" was a concept album, telling a full story....lie back in the dark with your headphones on, and play in from beginning to end...I wore out to vinyl copies over the years
This is one of the best albums ever made! It's still popular in this day and age, there is nobody like Pink Floyd.
The " Animal " album by then is great " Pigs Three Different Ones "
With Pink Floyd the album is a story. You'll love Great gig in the sky.
Any track From the Pulse concert is absolutely amazing. Too hear these tracks live....PF outdid themselves with this tour in 1994. Best concert I've ever attended!!
When you react to "Great Gig In The Sky", know that it comes directly after this song and that it expresses life from birth to death.
I love the excitement on your face for a new found love. Been a favorite of mine for 35 years. Brilliant music!
The lyrics are crazy deep of mortality! Love this!
63 year old and grew up in Pink Floyd as well. Some of their music is actually ingrained into my soul.
Especially dark side of the moon and wish you were here
Check out the LIVE version of Time from the PULSE CONCERT.
One of my favorites!
This album came out when I was 10 years old and I have been hooked ever since. This song show cases the talents of all 4 men in the group the wonderful keyboards of the late great Richard Wright, the Guitars and vocals of David Gilmour, The Drums and percussion of Nick Mason, and the Bass and of course the lyrics of Roger Waters,,
The album was on top of the billboard charts foe 988 weeks. Certified 15 times platinum n the UK. Sold over 45 million copies in the us.
