there is a reason for why nails are allowed to be cut in Sikhism...a grown nail can hurt someone. and in Sikhism hurting someone or causing pain to someone or even urself is considered wrong. Also, since both hairs and nails are formed from dead cells, we have a way of covering head with turbans to keep hairs neat and tidy and also hairs are considered to be the extensions of your neuron cells. in the case of nails, they are open and accumulate dirt since in old times and today as well, our traditions/religions is to eat with hands...it can be unhealthy. as purity of mind, body and soul just like other traditions is of importance in Sikhism. in Rig Veda Samhita, u would find many examples related to why nails needs to be cut. on the other hand some yogis(not all) keep overgrown nails as a symbol of renunciation of worldly matters and desires. hairs of the head, face and body hairs spiritually they get charged and they respond to the stimulus of the meditative practices but nails do not...this has been explained by various yogis.... i hope this helps, any additional aspects/opinions are very much appreciated.
