Making this country unattractive to foreign direct investors and currently all the goods and services are imported from Indonesia. Very sad after decades of declaring independence.

Maybe Timor's politicians should learn from Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore founding father). His civil management is, I would say, the best one. In just one decade he could concentrate population at several economic centers even giving them proper shelters. +Alex Nguyen Yes, they were instigated by Australia. Australia eyeing oil in the Timor Strait. even the province of East Nusa Tenggara (West Timor) are more affluent than the state of East Timor. respectful of Indonesia
@Alex Nguyen. It depends on what you value as important. The same could have been said of Vietnam, 12 years after defeating the Americans et al. N the mid 1980s Vietnam was also impoverished, but it has managed to turn its economy to middle income status over the last 30 years. I'd suggest a lot of East Timorese poverty has come from inadequate infrastructure and development while they were quite colony and occupied.
Indonesia never colonized east timor, east timor governor are timorese people, its state About occupation, its request from timorese people who want to join indonesia(anti portugese and communist), just check timorese who's pro-indonesia on timor war, plus indonesia never take any timorese resources If you want proof you can search how timorese welcome indonesian president JOKOWI and give him highest medal of honor, why they should give their invader highest medal of honor?

This independence is only about a handful of power-hungry people, because in fact the people are the victims, after Timor Leste came out of the country of Indonesia, the people more difficult, in terms of economy, education and other social security. because basically they still can not be separated from Indonesia, ranging from health, education, other necessities, which originally no trouble impeded by immigration, customs and import duties. when East Timor is still a part of the Unitary State of Indonesia, the people of East Timor have the same rights. Free schools, Free Health Facility for the Poor, and other Welfare Social Security, in no way different from other Indonesian People. should they not only think about Freedom but more than that, about the Great Soul of who is profitable and who is at a disadvantage, because WISE POPULATION The people should be above all important, more important about self-esteem, more important than power,

+lgunport I agree with your observation. I think Timorese is better of by taking Bahasa Indonesia as their main language. Or.... English. These two languages are widely spoken by the Timorese neighbors. Portugese ? Hmmm it is not widely spoken, especially not in the South East Asia. I do not see a real value in getting the Timorese to take it as official language.
quaqmireful I understand this view point, but just like the Filipinos use Tagalog (which is heavily influenced by Spanish) so too should Tetum become the most widely used language of East Timor (heavily influenced by Portuguese), however, unlike the Filipinos to some extend, the East-Timorese from what I've read want to bring back Portuguese as they seem to see it as part of their culture (and dislike the Indonesian influenced as it was because of them that they weren't independent for such a long time after the Portuguese left the island) and like the fact that the Portuguese and Brazilians are helping them setup an education system that uses it, something the Spaniards and some Hispanic-American governments haven't been so successful at as some large part of Filipino society dislike this part of their history for some genuine reasons I may add, but the Spanish language is not at fault here just those that colonized the Philippines.

The Agriculture of East Timor looks effective. The Agriculture export that everyone in East Timor can participate in would be wood. Agarwood for example...if everyone in East Timor has a few of these trees in thier backyard...thier government can buy them all (when the tree is ready) and sell it overseas. It's very profitable and quite simple to cultivate. All they would need is a national Agarwood tree nursery system to provide the little tree plant and distributed to all East Timorese. They are going to be financially rewarded I am sure. Also, this can be for all fruit bearing trees like coconuts, coffee or even durian. Trees for wood, trees for fruit.... they will need a nursery for each and all of them have thier tree farms to work with. 😃
Their products are expensive bcause theyre sold in USD. TL is still using USD as currency even 20 years after the independence, thats problematic for investment. Seriously your $1M can go further if you invest in Indonesia or Vietnam than TL.

2020 World Bank Reports, East Timor / Timor Leste is included in the list of the poorest countries in the world.
Low quality of human resources and Limited natural resources. Making this country unattractive to foreign direct investors and currently all the goods and services are imported from Indonesia. Very sad after decades of declaring independence.
We love you timor leste, you know Indonesia is colonized country, but you don't trust us, and believe Australia who is British people that almost make aborigin people extinct, believe your friend who is suffer like and he will take care of you forever, don't believe your rich friend who only give you money if you are useful, now Indonesian is become the highest economic growth in Asean, and one of the biggest gdp in the world, yeah that's gonna be divided per population, but high population is not disadvantage it's advantages, we are fast growing now, but alas we don't need anymore territory or pupulation
Maybe Timor's politicians should learn from Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore founding father). His civil management is, I would say, the best one. In just one decade he could concentrate population at several economic centers even giving them proper shelters. Right afterwards people no longer became burden for the country instead they like a machine that produced great prosperity for the country. Then see now it becomes one of the most prosperous countries in the world regarding its small area and its dependence of natural sources to its neighboors
Rifqi Aji but by now it is too late. The damage has been done.
Singapore have Strategic Port in the world, that's enough for developing a country.
singapore was an established region even before it seperated from malaysia. it was built by raffles who had got so many gold by robbing javanese kraton.
Singapore is rich because their position is very strategic and it's different with timor leste
Dude singapore was developed and invested by rich chinese traders from across nusantara.
can't wait to visit east timor will be there soon.
"was a portuguese colony and occupied by Indonesia" so do you think that we occupied them??? No we've never do that. When East Timor was a part from Indonesia, his capital Dili city is the most beautiful city in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, but when they get their independent from Indonesia, Kupang city in West Timor, Indonesia is more beautiful than this city, more (Dili 1: Kupang 1000)

hmmm... doesn't look like independence was worth the cost of lives & destruction... to end up isolated, impoverished and essentially worse off than under Indonesian occupation.
'A colony and occupied.'
Indonesia never colonized east timor, east timor governor are timorese people, its state
About occupation, its request from timorese people who want to join indonesia(anti portugese and communist), just check timorese who's pro-indonesia on timor war, plus indonesia never take any timorese resources
If you want proof you can search how timorese welcome indonesian president JOKOWI and give him highest medal of honor, why they should give their invader highest medal of honor?
Tukang Sate I suspect the Timorese are a very forgiving and pragmatic people, which is why they are able to welcome the Indonesian president. Besides the occupation was under Suharto not the present or recent Indonesian governments.

Their leaders and australia who pushed east timor to become independent must responsible for welfare of east timor people
Very interesting comments. You really have to be very young to think that 12 yrs is a long time.
Basically TL already grew as a "country" since they decided to be part of Indonesia in 1976. Indonesia help them to establish their land before they got their freedom in 2002. So actually you can count almost 45yrs till now and TL still not going anywhere even getting worse as a country

@@s21b0b how can soeharto tell? Both parties claimed that majority people on their side.
Free schools, Free Health Facility for the Poor, and other Welfare Social Security, in no way different from other Indonesian People. should they not only think about Freedom but more than that, about the Great Soul of who is profitable and who is at a disadvantage, because WISE POPULATION The people should be above all important, more important about self-esteem, more important than power,
Honestly, the reason Timor Leste got invaded is also because of the interests of a number of power-hungry people as well. This is a FACT!

the government has been doing nothing. Timor Leste is the most depended country on oils. they can not produce any necessities and have to import most of the products. The landscape here is beautiful, however, they have no strategy to promote tourism. If Dili can get just 1/20 the amounts of foreign tourists coming to Dili, the situation may get better. the cost of living here is bad, too

Well, cool good luck on your voyage. I've read that both Portuguese and Brazilian authorities are promoting the Portuguese language and it seems this is helping in moving people to be educated in this language instead of Indonesian, but who knows.
sion8 that young soon to be ship captain thought by indo captain using bahasa indonesia, telecomunication, bureaucratization, and education system still provided by us indonesian, portuguese would only becoming elitist language that have little in value for the timorese.
I do not see a real value in getting the Timorese to take it as official language.
quaqmireful
I understand this view point, but just like the Filipinos use Tagalog (which is heavily influenced by Spanish) so too should Tetum become the most widely used language of East Timor (heavily influenced by Portuguese), however, unlike the Filipinos to some extend, the East-Timorese from what I've read want to bring back Portuguese as they seem to see it as part of their culture (and dislike the Indonesian influenced as it was because of them that they weren't independent for such a long time after the Portuguese left the island) and like the fact that the Portuguese and Brazilians are helping them setup an education system that uses it, something the Spaniards and some Hispanic-American governments haven't been so successful at as some large part of Filipino society dislike this part of their history for some genuine reasons I may add, but the Spanish language is not at fault here just those that colonized the Philippines.
When i heard you said "the land are perfect for planting" I can say you are not even research about east timor deeply..

Australia was in the opposite position in 1975.
