      I understand your frustration Josh, but after living in Indonesia I know that this is part of the culture. When something is wrong or can't be delivered, like not understanding your food order, it is viewed as shameful and therefore people tend to hide instead of showing their failure.

  • @SandmanTH
    @SandmanTH Рік тому +71

    Timor L’Este does actually have another bigger and more modern airport, opened in 2019. 'Oecusse Route of the Sandalwood International Airport' OEC It meets international safety standards and even has aero bridges. Unfortunately it has never served any scheduled international flights. This is because it is located in an exclave (Oceusse) surrounded by West Timor Indonesia with not much else there. Going to Dili by road requires entering and exiting Indonesia immigration and a 200km journey. At one time there were infrequent flights to Dili but these appear to be suspended.

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr Рік тому +11

      @SandmanTH, first, a tip: no apostrophe. No article with an "L" exists in Portuguese, and that's not the reason for that letter there, as would have been the case in French or Italian. "Leste" is the Portuguese word for "east", and the "L" is part of the word.
      Now, there is also an airport in Baucau, in mainland Timor-Leste, with a much longer runway and better approach conditions than the airport in Díli. It's a former Portuguese airbase that was also Timor-Leste's main civilian airport in colonial times. Unfortunately, it was abandoned during the Indonesian occupation and is now derelict and in disrepair. It is also over 100 km from Díli by road and no one wants such a long ride to or from the airport.
      Still, sooner or later Timor-Leste will have to solve the airport problem, which is becoming a bottleneck to the nation's development, and then renovating Baucau might be considered an option.

He should have apologized first and excused himself saying he was very sick, and most customers are very forgiving. As a former Environmental Health Inspector overseeing restaurants and take-away food establishments for health and hygiene compliance, the ever-mounting instances of food poisoning were commonly found to be from batch cooking of rice. The spores that create the toxins which in turn become responsible for food poisoning can grow rapidly on account of the size of each grain of rice. The surface area of just one portion of contaminated rice can exceed the size of a couple of steaks. Personally, I steer well clear of reheated rice. Always.

    When I lived in Timor, back in 2004~2005, after my first meal in the country I had a severe food poisoning that led me to ICU for 2 days. The last thing I remember was entering the UN hospital, filling a brief paperwork, seating on a bench and a few minutes later I was on the floor. All the locals were screaming "Malay! Malay! Malay!" to get the attention of the hospital staff that the "foreigner" was unresponsive...
    I guess that the first "gift" some people will get in a new country is a bad food poisoning 🙂
    PS: That was my first and only food poisoning in Timor. I lived there for almost three years without any other issue.
    PS2: Locals used to pay US$ 0.50 for a taxi trip, no matter how far. Foreign workers were charged US$ 1 - sometimes US$ 2. Only tourists would be charged US$ 10 for a trip. Yes, you are supporting the local economy, but it is terrible to be scammed this way.

I had problems for weeks and then, after I ate at Burger King, it suddenly got better and that happened 3 or 4 times in a row and eventually I noticed the pattern.
      I know how weird that is and it might just have been a big coincidence that happened several times, but it definitely was happening.
      It changed though. Now it doesn't work anymore. Probably because all the Burger King restaurants in my area are owned and run by Arabs now and are really filthy and the food is disgusting.

I usually get it on sale for approx. $1.5-2 while the normal price is around $4 so for people to pay almost $13 in East Timor is insane not least compared to their comparatively lower income.

      I would be pissed too, if I had to wait two hours for a problem that was not even mine! And here you have a person that lacks the customer skills required to know that he must immediately address any issues with the customer asap and not keep them waiting. Traveling is stressful enough as you are at the mercy of the airline. It was not like it was a cheap ticket either, with an Airline with a lot of customers. In the US, we are trained to drop everything we are doing and address the issues with the customer immediately. Josh said the manager came in and wondered around, going to the restroom for a while. I suspect he had food poisoning too, which is why he was also late. Most folk do not realize that if they immediately explain themselves with the reason for being late and apologize, most customers are very forgiving. Asians tend to be shy around foreigners and don't speak up. They really need to address the issue of food safety! I suspect the meats and dairy are not being stored at the right temperatures. They could kill someone and could get sued out of business. The elderly and children are very vulnerable. I hope they take this warning very seriously! Sometimes you are given one chance to rectify a urgent problem and if you fail to do so, you have only yourself to blame.

      @@Dan-xx5jq, sued out of business? How and where? In Timor-Leste? Of course the court would be rigged to protect the national airline (owned by one of the richest men in the country, from what I saw, and in such a small country, you can imagine his connections). Any resident would also be frightened to death of reprisal and persecution (of course, such a lawsuit would only be feasible for a local national or resident). In Indonesia? The country is infamous for its slow, corrupt, and confusing courts, and people are used to avoiding civil lawsuits at all costs because of the hassle, the expense, and the embarrassment of direct confrontation, which their culture tends to avoid (you saw an example of this in this video, with Josh's check-in experience). That's Southeast Asia, not California!
      Also, being such a small airline, with only one plane and one daily return flight, Aero Dili certainly doesn't have its own kitchen in Denpasar (or in Díli - Josh's dessert had a label saying "geleia", which means "jelly" in Portuguese, indicating that it came from Timor-Leste on the inbound flight to DPS) and buys its food from some local catering company, which has obviously been operating with impunity and no oversight, probably selling to other airlines, too.

      I am surprised that East Timor was able to gain independence against a large country like Indonesia. Goa, India was in a similar situation with 75% of the population being Catholic before 1961. It was futile attempt to even try to go against a powerful country like India and so they were swallowed up by the bigger country. They have since gone to less than 25% Catholic and the rest being Hindu as a lot of Indians have moved into Goa since and continue to do so. From recent press coverage the Christians do face communal animosity now, with the government of the current PM who is very much proHindu, and is against secularism.
      I would have expected to see a lot more Portuguese architecture in East Timor like they do in Goa. Goa has some magnificent churches that rival the ones in Europe that are 400 and 500+ years old. When India invaded in 1961, the Portuguese governor was given the order to destroy all the huge glamorous buildings the Portuguese built on his way out, but he refused the order and was jailed on his return. Goa was also considered a province of Portugal and not a colony, and when India invaded it did cause a stir as it meant India invaded a NATO country.

    I think the prayer card is the legacy of the Indonesian occupation. Until as late as I was a child, in the early 2010s, several Indonesian low-cost carriers still have such.

    Something that i've caught my eye while doing a little research about that country is East Timor only has 2 airlines. Aero Dili and Air Timor. The only Aero Dili A320 is 15 years old. I feel so sorry that you have a food poisoned that day while you are in East Timor. As an Indonesian Avgeek, I have never visited that country and after watching this video, i think i won't visited that country because me and my family are a bit worried about visiting that place. The only countries that i've visited when i was a kid with my family was Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. Hopefully i can visited a new country in the near future.

      What a stupid comment after what you Indonesians did to the people and country. I was there when the peace keepers moved in. I saw it first hand and you have the audacity to make a comment like that. The Indonesians and their brainwashed puppets committed the rape, murders, kidnappings and thefts. The East Timorese are so beautifully nice, kind and caring. They won't forget but they have forgiven.

    I can understand the urge to eat something familiar and theoretically safe after being sick. Unfortunately for many, BK never goes down well and is always regretted.
    East Timor is not on my list of places to visit.

      @Dreamweaver787 ? The most potent naturally occurring toxin is created by bacteria that live on meat. Veggies and fruit are your safest bet, because you can tell if they're still good or not.
