  • In this video I am doing a power test of the Baofeng UV-82 8W model. This is not the UV-82HP tri-power model. Does it hold up to its claim?
You can get the 5W model here (affiliate): amzn.to/2fZMbxS

I have about five UV-82s (8Watts), and they tested very good, considering.... Frequencies 462.525 (6.4W); 142.500 (6.65W); and 146.955 (6.8W). You can't really expect 8Ws in any of these frequencies, but it's close enough. If you hit the [# Key], you can cycle through the power settings. If you can cycle through H, M and L, you've got the higher power UV-82 model. If it goes from H to nothing, you've got the standard version, and testing is irrelevant.
That said, even the standard version UV-82 is better than most of the radios I've tested, and you shouldn't fret. The good thing about the high power model is that you can put it on the MEDIUM and get 462.525 (4.4W); 142.500 (4.3W); and 146.955 (4.78W). This means its MEDIUM power settings are what most handheld radios are powered at at HIGH, and that's impressive! So it would not be a bad idea to put your radio on MEDIUM and leave it at that.
Even most expensive handheld radios don't quite hit 5Watts, right? They usually come in at 4.xW. Thus, the UV-82 (8W) comes in at MEDIUM power levels, and what most handheld radios (even expensive ones) come in at at HIGH. Then, if you need some extra push, you can inch it up two watts, from 4-point-something to 6-point-something. And you can save battery power by keeping it on MEDIUM. Thus, the UV-82 (8W) is a fabulous radio. It's the sleeping giant Baofeng.

I agree with you. When I made this video, there were UV-82s in the market that claimed and actually had 8W of output power, but there were also models like this one I tested, that claimed 8W of power but the claims were false. This is one of those radios.

      @@HamRadioReviews » I hope you find one of the 8W versions. I have two SWR meters and the 82/8W models got very nice results. High: 142.000/6.3W; 146.955/ 6.8W; 146.050/ 6.8W; 460.000 5.3W; 462.725/ 5.3W. Medium: 142.000/ 4.8W; 146.955/ 4.9W; 146.050/ 4.9W; 460.000/ 4.2W; 462.725/ 4.2W.
I also highly recommend the Baofeng UV-H6. Very nice 10W radio. Average High: 8.6W. Of the two, the UV-82 (8W) is the winner. Why? Because 1) it has a flashlight, and 2) because its Medium powers are very close to what most 5W radios are on their High settings! The Medium settings on the H6 are 3.8 or 3.4, a little less than a 5W radio. The good thing about the UV-82 (8W) is that you can leave it on Medium all the time and you won't sacrifice a thing. The H6 can work on Medium, but it will be a bit anemic. Both are great radios.

      hi john
I have a question: is there any difference between UHF frequencies??
for example, I mean is there any difference between 410.5 MHz vs 470 MHz??
I'm a mountain climber and I have purchased a uv82. now I want to know which frequency should I use in mountains and forests to achieve the most range? and also which frequency should I use in outdoor(such as deserts) to achieve the most range? or there is no difference between 410 & 433 & 470 MHz at all !??

    • @johnroberts6695

@@mohammadbararti5443 » As you know, all these radios operate best in line of sight; however, if you're in the woods, you'll most likely have to penetrate trees and hills, and from what I understand, VHF will offer some advantage. That said, I generally prefer UHF. And to answer your question more specifically, some people say it's always best to use a frequency _midway_ through the frequency range. I'd choose a frequency in the 443-445MHz range. But is there any significant difference? I don't think so.
I recently did a range test with a Baofeng UV-H6 (a wonderful little radio). My wife stayed home and I took off through the neighborhood. I kept my radio in the midrange _power_ settings and it wasn't long before I found myself battling static. I then kicked up the power and my wife reported I was coming in much better, so power also is something you might want to consider. The H6 and the Retevis RT-29 Military (waterproof) are both great options, and the latter will give you a full 10 watts. You can get them in VHS and UHF with a big honking battery.
If you want to go with a Retevis, I can give you the frequencies of the channels. Notarubicon tested the RT-29 and gave it a glowing review. He was able to go ten miles with it line of sight. If money is a huge issue, I was able to get 8.7 watts out of the UV-H6. With the UV-82, it really didn't seem to like UHF very much. I got 6.8 watts out of the VHF and only 5.3 on UHF. If you have the regular UV-82 5W, it shouldn't be an issue, but if it's the 8W version, I couldn't get more than 5.3 watts out of UHF. Of course, your radio may be different.

Thx Sir for showing these test results to confirm their false claims, I purchased what appears to be between a BaoFeng UV5R & BF-F8HP hybrid variant of another branding. It claims to be capable of 10 watts power transmission which I find unbelievable even without conducting a test, it also only has High & Low power settings which as you mentioned isn't actually capable of it as new versions of UV5R & BF-F8HP 8 watts has H.M.L indications. Chinese HT radios are cheap but also are notorious for false claims, cheers.

You aren't testing an 8W UV-82. You need to test an 8W model (which will have HIGH, MEDIUM and LOW). When you saw the HIGH and LOW settings, you should have _immediately_ realized you had a 5W version with a label anyone could have printed and stuck on.
I have an 8W version that has all three settings. The best outputs I have were 7.6W with UHF and just about 6W with VHF. The Baofeng 8W UV-5R comes in at 7.8W at UHF and 6.8W with VHF. But you have to watch the fake radios. Some are great, but others are just labels like yours. You should have returned yours because the 8W 82s are great and personally, I doubt you could see the difference between 8W and 5W.

That is not a UV-82. A UV-82 has 3 power modes that cycles from left to right: "L", "M", "H"; for "low", "medium", and "high". It appears to have an 8W battery, but I'm not really sure what that proves since you stated that you swapped the battery yourself at the beginning of the video?

UV-82HP (for the US) or 82HX (for Europe) are the only official 82 based 8W models (BF-F8HP is only other official 8W model, the rest are all fakes and illegally made and sold).

My two Bob's worth: Great review!
Translation to English is very difficult. I dont believe the Chinese make this type of error as deliberate to gain sales. I do believe somewhere along the line of command within the company, the translation of " Overseas sales indicate this model is excellent for price but they are requesting 8w. Can we make this same model 8W capable?" has been answered with a "yes, we already make one with 8w but it costs a little more to produce". This misinterpretation may occur again on the factory floor where, a manager will recall a meeting at which his senior manager has stated "this model is 8w". Before long, your Bob is his uncle. Or more famously, "Send four and sixpence, we're going to a dance"
Westerners often lack appreciation of the Chinese business to produce such low prices. They leave no room to move on their price. Two examples
If you ask him for a lower production cost, he/she will always answer yes. They achieve this by replacing one component (a screw perhaps) with a component that has slightly less quality. One that cost him less.
If you say to a food vender "I only have $3.50, can I still have the $4:00 sweet and sour pork dumplings?"
"yes' will come the reply. Though you may receive a serving with one less dumpling.
He/she has not deceived you? No, he/she did what you asked.

Since it says UV-82 with no H, I doubt very much that it is a UV-82 8 watt radio despite what your seller stated. Sorry. Additionally the wattmeter that you are using is not very accurate. I would not trust it. Lastly, my UV-82HP (from Baofeng Tech USA) is marked in the battery compartment as 7-8 watts RF OUTPUT., not simply 8 watts, which may be the input wattage, as we know that there is a difference between input power and output power. I suggest that you ask your dealer for a refund. 73

Not necessarily. None of my UV-82 (8W) radios are labelled UV-82HPs, yet they are clearly higher powered. Frequencies measured on HIGH at 462.525 (6.4W); 142.500 (6.65W); and 146.955 (6.8W).
That said, _even the standard version UV-82 is better than most of the radios_ I've tested, and you shouldn't fret.
