Glad I have the UV82. Got mines for around $27 which is close to the uv5r. UV82 is a better buy.
I think I paid like 23$ for this one a few years back 👍. Thanks for watching!
The UV82's seem to have gone up in price. With other brands overpricing their radios by incredible amounts, I hope the money is going toward new product development. Baofeng deserves the profit. Meanwhile, the UV5r's are cheaper than ever.
The UV-82hp is about 3x the price of the UV-5r if that's any indication, but you can't always go by that. I have the UV82hp and really like it. Personally I like having to turn the radio off to switch from channel to frequency mode. It's not something you do multiple times a day and it prevents accidental bumps. I plan on adding a UV5r to my collection just because they're cheap and well made. Side by side I don't think they're really much different.
Thanks for the videos man. I always learn something. But I have to mention that watching multiple power tests of these radios I see different results. But I believe that is happening because each reviewer is using different equipment. So who is correct?
Different equipment will show different results if it’s not similarly calibrated
Thank's for the Test of these 2 radio's. It don't surprise me as to the result's of it.....Green Screen is cool too👍🏽
Your videos are great. Would you mind sharing what type of microphone and camera you use? Thanks for the great content and clear explanations
I use my iPhone 8+ and if I add voice later it’s with a Blue Snowball microphone 👍
I think also if you buy your Baofeng radios from BTech. The power level’s will be more consistent. I might be wrong. I will know soon enough.
I have the 2 BF-F8HP and 3 BTech v1 GMRS radios. Plus I have the BTech UV-25x2 mobile radio.
I just bought a RS-40 meter do I will know soon as I get the proper connector’s . I hope that my BF-F8HP radios put out the 8watts or at least the 7 . I use them on UHF mostly.
Great info video. Just what I needed for choosing tween the two. Thanks. Subbed.
My Baofeng UV5R was about the same when i bought it so i used a program called chirp and got 8 watts output just gets hot quicker and go's flat fast. I think the antenna is the way to get out better not the power
@@TheSmokinApe Did you get better result since you used Chirp ? Thanks
@@TheSmokinApe well. i should invest into a swr / power meter then... To check that.
Great video! Dig the green screen. I have thought about doing that myself. What is the power rating for the dummy load you used? Keep up the great work!
So I have the uv5r mk5, 8W. I'm wondering if it would be the same result or, if because of manufacturing tolerance, it would just vary radio to radio anyway? Appreciate the videos dude!
It could be anything, there are many of these that have been made over the years by different vendors and manufacturers. I just throw these out there for awareness 👍
TYT MD380UV GPS a good starter radio. Good sound from the speaker. Got me interested enough in ham radio to order the Anytone 878+ and a hotspot.
@@TheSmokinApe Ordered today but I have a codeplug ready when it comes.
@@TheSmokinApe Ordered today but have a codeplug ready. MMDVM hotspot with 3.2 inch screen 119 dollars. Clearance item but they have a few left.

I have been interested in ham since I got out of the mil, 5 years ago. Now, I am just getting into it and thinking about the 878 myself...mainly due to the good reviews for analog and dmr. Good luck with yours!
@@tntshuffle-9799 Fixed income (SSDI). Can't afford a new radio when something new comes out. It does everything including analog APRS so probably the last radio I will need to buy.
Wondering here...would the UV-82 or UV-82HP be a good first radio? Any insight appreciated. Thank you.
I have a dumb question. What do you call the green graph looking tabletop you have your radios on in your videos?
I'm quite sure your antenna connections were not tight, so readings will not be good... Also for accurate power readings the SWR is still a good thing to check, even if you're on a dummy load.
Thanks for your video. Can i pair uv 82 with uv 5r? I have a uv5r and would like to buy a uv 82
Love the green screen set up.
Haha, I’ve been on a few streams with other hams and needed to do something. Thanks man 👍
I think if one had more power with the small antenna I may be interfering in a conversation that's not heard due to the signal not getting to the antenna. I'd like to know more about this concern.
Uv 5r Or uv 82 ...? ... Which one is the best
I'd give the 82 a slight edge for receive audio but you have to power it on and off to switch between Memory and VFO mode. I think either are just fine and its 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other....
hi! we will go to a festival with a big group of friends. so far we will have 4 walkie talkies, can l join them with one of these?
They need to have coverage in the same frequencies. Also, there are rules and laws about what frequencies you can use, to legally use this radio you do need to be a licensed ham radio operator 👍
the swr meter switch is on SWR mode, not the power output mode.
still, UV-5R is great value. I also have the UV-B5. I like the sound more, it's supposed to have better filtering and 8 W, but I prefer the interface of UV-5RE Plus (same as UV-5R). I'm surprised that it performed so poorly.
Depends on the UV5R, some are pretty good and some like this one are terrible.
One of the UA-cam I found saying UV-82 is not FCC compliant and hence illegal and fines are min $14,000. Let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks
I think there is allot of confusion on the topic given a FCC notice that was published about two years ago, many folks were hoping that there would be an update with further clarification. I’m not a lawyer so I wouldn’t give any advise either way.
If it bothers you, place it on the ground and run around it screaming, "
Help, it is a criminal, watch out it will get you."

Appreciate your videos thank you 👍🏻 maybe you have done(couldn’t find it) or can do a video on the Yaesu FT65R...? Thank you sir 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad you like them! Sorry, I don’t have the 65r but that could always change 👍
Can you talk about what this translates to in the real world. How much of a difference does it make? Thanks you!
Sure, there are a few things to consider, First less power means that you signal isn’t as strong. Second of the signal isn’t modulated correctly, common with Baofeng, the power isn’t used efficiently. Third, if your antenna isn’t tuned or matched to you rx frequency the signal is further diminished. More videos to come 👍
Great I just bought 2. 1 for my son and me. Can you please test Motorola gp328.
My uv5rtp( I know it's a different radio than the one in the video) puts out about 6.9 Watts.
@@TheSmokinApe actually basically it's a regular uv5r but with a low medium and high power setting. High power is supposed to be 8 watts but falls a bit short of 8 watts
Ah 😳. I just bought the 5r plus 🙄. Oh well it looks good 😂
TheSmokinApe maybe. It repeatedly clicks when it gets to some frequencies. My wouxun uv-9r plus didn’t do this. I’m waiting on a new aerial today. Hopefully this sorts it out. Thanks for the reply btw 😉
Pleeeeease dispense with the "handy-walkies" stuff. It's a walkie-talkie. They've been walkie talkies since I was a kid in the 50s! If someone had called their radios handy-walkies back then, someone would have beat them up. I just cringe when I hear these things. It was like the first time I heard Tiny Tim singing "Tip-toe through the Tulips!" Yeeesh.
I'm not expert, but I'm guessing that screwing the meter on propperly rather than by 1 thred might give a better reading on the uv-5r
Cuál es mejor?
There is a pot on the inside to jack it up to 4 watts, its the only pot in there
So, i now have 4 radios. 1 uv82 and 3 uv5r one of which is a uv5rplus. I noticed when i hit the transmit on uv82 that it interrupts the signal on my am radio!? I am studying to get a tech license but it is all greek to me. I am going to see if my local ham club, oak forest ham radio club, Houston Tx has classes for me to attend. The radios are complicated for me to use and the manuals that come with them FUCKIN SUCK... Everyone of the boxes and manual etc is COMPLETELY different!?!? Anyway, good info on the vid thanks...
The manuals do suck, most of what I know about ham radio is from UA-cam videos 👍 good luck on the test 👍
Maybe I missed it but were you using fresh batteries?
You should be able to see the battery indicator in the video. The UV5R was probably at 95% charged 👍
TheSmokinApe thanks Ape. I’m shopping for a DMR and have learned lots lately from your vids.
The green screen effect is cool and all but I like your videos when you just show your hands only that's what makes your videos unique. Now don't get me wrong but with the green screen you look like ham radio 2.0
Haha, thanks for the feedback. Typically my thought process is to make the video about the product and not me, I’ve gotten mixed feedback. Thanks for the comment and thanks for the comment 👍
Weird. Ham Radio Concepts did the same test using the same equipment and got 5 watts. Looks like your connections aren't tight. That's probably why. Or you have a different version.

Baofengs are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your are gonna get.
I've been licensed and using HTs for over 30 years. And, every one I've owned will only reach it's FULL rated transmitter "Output" power when your connected to a 13.8 volt power supply. NEVER when just using the rinkey dink battery 🔋!

You Sir,
Are very welcome!
Thank You for your interesting and informative content.
Some of these "inexpensive" Asian imports don't even have an "External DC" port to plug into!!!!! 🤔
I know im late with comment but next time do test in the fm portion of 70cm band not in ssb portion where you will never use that radio and last , do a test in the commercial portion of the vhf and uhf bands , i bet theyre more likely to be better there
you have tested a WRONG piece of UV-82!!!! No offense but the TRUE BF-82HP has 3 modes of Power (LOW, MID, & HIGH). Try to demo the REAL BAOFENG UV-82HP with 3 Mode of Powere. Your Demo Product is not 8 watts but only 5 watts BF Product. Have a nice day to you and to your Subscriber. I hope this coment will help you and your Subscribers in searching for REAL 8 watts Portable Radio. 73.
I saw your face😯😯😯🤤.
Haha, it’s been in other videos too! I’ve been doing streams with other UA-camrs so I figured I do it more on the channel 👍
@@TheSmokinApe yeah I've seen you there too, at least on the youtubers bunch.
bad video ! you have not validate Low (L) on the UV5R ! re test please ;)
just a tip for u. you dont have to go into settings to change power on baofeng radio just tap the # key while on main screen. discovered this some time ago on my uv5r. really handy when ur on low battery and dont want to fiddle with the settings menu. and of course amazing video, keep up the good work
Nice, had no idea 👍
