That looks good enough to bring to work to rehydrate! Cheaper than buying lunch everyday! But I had always brought left over dinner for my lunch because I always made extra dinner! Still do and give to homeless in our area!
I really like this. I've been planning on making a meal like this but just haven't gotten around to it. You plan to do any more videos? It looks like you taken a bit of a break. Thanks for posting this.
That looks amazing! I’m thinking I want to try this as a meal for lunch one day. I think it would maybe be really good as a “topping” over some boiled potato chunks. Or perhaps, a super fancy “S.O.S.” on some toast? great idea! Now to start brainstorming about some variations!
Eileen Maschal supposedly freezer bags can tolerate the heat, but personally I won’t eat out of the bag, I prefer to eat out of my pot. Not a gram weenie 😉😂
@@SouthernPatriot1, & Eileen Maschal "Supposedly"?, Yeah right! Hormone replacement therapy 30+ yeas ago was "supposedly" better for a woman than having the problems that menopause can bring to some. So it was widely recommended by doctors and done by all most women at the time After 20+ years of data, they discovered those that had it had a much greater rates of breast cancer. Oops! That taught me (a man) "supposedly" is to be avoided and proven is required and not just supposed to be safe. Plastic was supposedly safe until it was proven it wasn't. Now not all plastics are the same but when it comes to being in contact with food and with heat, I'll simply pass. There are specific plastic chemistries that are supposedly safe but here we go again. Been there and lived through that, thank you every much. I'll pass on heating/ cooking/eating my food in plastic to save clean up. I eat on not plastic dishes, heat my food in non plastic containers. Store food only in the frig using plastic. I'll wash the pot used to reheat/cook in and I'll wash the plate. Thank you very much. When it comes to health and hygiene, soap and water is a good thing and best not avoided for convenience.
Most interesting, thanks. Here's my take on a UK Shepherd's Pie, made in my GSI Nesting Bowl and Mug. It's a vegetarian recipe and as I'm not so keen on the potato and gravy mixed together I make it as follows: 3-4 tbsp soy mince 1 tbsp freeze dried onions 2 tbsp freeze dried carrots 4 tsp vegetarian gravy mix A pinch of salt and pepper to taste All the above mixed well together while dry and A 50g portion of potato powder, slightly salted, packed separately (in a small plastic bag, in with the soy mince mixture). Add the soy mince mixture to the lidded, insulated GSI nesting mug, and cover with boiling water. I do this by eye so can't be precise about the exact amount of water (sorry). Suffice it to say that the mixture should resemble runny gravy but not to runny and not too stiff. Stir well then cover with the nesting mug lid, which clicks firmly into place, and leave for five to six minutes (check for consistency half way through if required). Put the potato powder into the outer bowl but do not mix immediately. When the soy mince mixture is about 30 seconds from being ready, add boiling water to the potato powder and mix well. You will be able to judge this by how you like your own potatoes, stiff or not quite so stiff. I prefer mine to be like mashed, freshly boiled potatoes. Add the potato mixture to the mug containing the soy mince mixture. You could either have soy mince mixture and potato half-and-half in the bowl or add the potato to the top of the mix as in a shepherds pie. I don't know if you have Quorn products in the USA but if you do, my version of shepherd's pie tastes very much like the Quorn Shepherd's or Cottage Pie. I understand the reason for making Tom's version in the bag; it's for convenience on the trail. I don't think the GSI Nesting Bowl and Mug set is not too heavy for lightweight backpackers. Sadly, I don't backpack these days but still enjoy camping. I will be including my shepherd's pie amongst the homemade, add-only-hot-water meals, which include pasta and couscous-based meals, I take away with me on camping trips this year.
+Caveman Outdoors I dried the hamburger and mushrooms ua-cam.com/video/k3OTd_nUkok/v-deo.html , The corn was freeze dried mountain house and the onion was Augason Farms. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great way to do that recipe. I did a very similar video several years ago but I cooked everything in two pots. That was foolish now I know. Freezer bag meals are so much easier.....Take care, Bluefin.
This reminds me a bit when guys in my patrol would mash all the things in their MRE's bags including the Tabasco and hot chocolate... I hope it tastes better then it looked. But great job.
+Nature Calls If there is a sale I stock up when I can! These are simple to put together but I have used the vacuum sealer on a few. Beware of sharp edges on beef and noodles. They puncture the bags pretty easy under vacuum.
If you get a soup thermos you definitely can! You can just add the boiling water in the morning and by lunch time it should be warm, rehydrated, flavors melded, etc.!
It certainly did not look as great as it tasted. But hey it is tough to eat really well in the back country. I like this idea. I will give it a try. So far I am not having good success getting food to rehydrate with just boiling water. I have to start the meal from cold and bring it to a boil all together.
+EconoChallenge It definitely tasted better than it looked :) Are you having problems with all food items or just a few? I was having the same problem with noodles till I cooked them and then dehydrated them again. Now they re-hydrate fine. Let me know how it goes Jeep! and thanks for watching!
+TomsBackwoods for noodles I switched to couscous since it'll cook just by pouring boiling water on it and waiting. There are instant noodles at the chinese grocer that are pretty much cooked/ dehydrated already.
Can you put boiling water into most Ziplock type bags? I'm starting to dehydrate my own food and want to save on cleaning pot of I can do what you did in this video. I'm thinking of tested some bags first before bringing them backpacking, I have one more trip mid October before the season is done here in Ontario, Canada.
You say two different amounts of water. At the 2:56 mark you said two ( 2 ) cups of water. At the 5:52 mark you said 1 and 3/4 cups of water. ???? A long , long time ago Mountain House had a Rice and Beef with Gravy Meal that was really good , then they discontinued it. I'm making my own with a recipe close to yours substituting Rice for the Potatoes. It is a 50 - 50 mix of dehydrated Hamburger and Sausage with Rice , Dried Onion , Gravy mix & some Salt and Pepper to taste. The great thing about doing your own is that you can do it your way. Freezer Bag cooking and the cleaning up is easy , just lick the spoon and put the bag in your trash.
I explained at 3:10 in the video I would be adding water slowly to check consistency and I could have used up to 2 cups of water. It depends on how you like your consistency. Your recipe sounds good! good luck and thanks for watching!
Since the potatoes rehydrate so easily, I think I would have tried keeping them separate then adding them after the other stuff had absorbed all the water they could. But looks like I was wrong and everything worked great. Sorta shepherd's pie with corn, or (pate chinois as they call it in Quebec for some unknown reason... nothing chinese about it)
+Wyoming Slabjacking Some companies make big cans of freeze dried products..Walmart has a bunch of it in the grocery side of the store. Its kinda pricey but it goes a long way. Also, Amazon has some cans you can purchase also.
besides garlic is good for ya boosts the immune system thanks for the vids please keep posting !!!! you have some great ideas some of witch I have used and yup turned out fantastic !!!

That looks good enough to bring to work to rehydrate! Cheaper than buying lunch everyday! But I had always brought left over dinner for my lunch because I always made extra dinner! Still do and give to homeless in our area!
Good stuff! I like your idea of pouring the water directly into the bag. Easy cleanup!
Thanks for watching!
Love your freezer bag recipes. Keep em coming!
+Atlas918 Thanks so much! I will have a few more soon!

Yes but make sure they're freezer bags.

Love it. I'd need to dehydrate some beef and corn etc.
Thanks for watching and the comment!

Great video, thanks for sharing! Subbed and liked:)
Thanks for the sub!
That sounds really good, where do you get your dried ingredients
+Caveman Outdoors I dried the hamburger and mushrooms ua-cam.com/video/k3OTd_nUkok/v-deo.html , The corn was freeze dried mountain house and the onion was Augason Farms. Thanks for watching!
Adding this to my tool box

+BushmanofYukon Thanks bro! It saves alot of money to! ATB Tom

+mustang774 A lot less to clean up to! Thanks for watching!
This reminds me a bit when guys in my patrol would mash all the things in their MRE's bags including the Tabasco and hot chocolate... I hope it tastes better then it looked. But great job.
+RViscara It sure did! Thanks for watching!
Awesome. Keep them coming. Do you build as you need them?
+Nature Calls If there is a sale I stock up when I can! These are simple to put together but I have used the vacuum sealer on a few. Beware of sharp edges on beef and noodles. They puncture the bags pretty easy under vacuum.
looked great Tom, I would certainly eat that meal. I suppose you could drop a teaspoon of ghee in there for calories too.
+Don Milligan absolutely Don! That would add to the flavor as well!
i would take that to work for lunch!
+moe2407 Great idea!
If you get a soup thermos you definitely can! You can just add the boiling water in the morning and by lunch time it should be warm, rehydrated, flavors melded, etc.!
I recommend cold soaking the dehydrated hamburger for a couple hours
one of these days I will have to try your dehydrated burger. I just never find the time. Now that I have time, I have no meat lol
+couchcamper It always something huh! Thanks so much for watching!

As long as your not cooking in the bag (Boiling the bag) I have had no problems just adding boiling water and re-hydrating so far.
Thanks, I tried it out with some dehydrated food I made and it come out great, no clean up after.
You can boil in the bag but it has to be a freezer bag as it should be for using boiling water. Freezer bags rock
You say two different amounts of water. At the 2:56 mark you said two ( 2 ) cups of water. At the 5:52 mark you said 1 and 3/4 cups of water. ????

+FlashGeiger Originally I thought the same thing. I have a few more I'm thinking of putting together. Thanks for watching!
how many calories per bag?
450...depending on your portion size
Salt, pepper, garlic
Sure!
Sounds good looks well alpo lol As long as it tastes good
+Pawoodsman LOL I must be the only person to mix there gravy a potato's together. It looked and smelled good. Thanks for watching!
Does not look pretty but I would guess it would be tasty and filling. Thanks for sharing Mark
+Mark Thomas Hobbies Definitely taste better than it looks! Thanks for watching!
Instant Sheppard's Pie! I'll have to try that.
How do you freeze dry corn?
+Wyoming Slabjacking Some companies make big cans of freeze dried products..Walmart has a bunch of it in the grocery side of the store. Its kinda pricey but it goes a long way. Also, Amazon has some cans you can purchase also.
Thanks! Mike
+Wyoming Slabjacking No problem. I haven't tried any of them, but I might this year while backpacking.
+Wyoming Slabjacking The corn was from mountain house. I buy the big cans. The dehydrated corn doesn't hydrate the same IMO. Thanks for watching!
Looks good. but you must have mentioned dehydrated corn not freeze dried corn.
+Tim Barton As stated in the beginning of the vid It was freeze dried corn not dehydrated corn. Thanks for watching!
Hey Tom, how can someone email you if they have questions? Thanks, Darren

Nice Tom, Wonder who the the prick was that gave you a thumbs down? Keep up the great vids.
LOL ... There is always at least one person ya just cant please. Thanks for watching!
I'm sure it taste good.. but it looks like cat food or smashed blender food.
It does taste better than it looks for sure! if ya like mashed potato's and gravy.
I wouldn't trust heating that in that bag, I honestly think you should just heat it in your pot.
