Well here it is 6th of March 2019 I watched your video during my lunch break at work. After work I went to the local Walmart found the Nido in the Latino Isle i purchased a small container of it purchased a box of Grape-Nuts I also purchased the cane sugar they had all three. I went home assembled it as you instructed. I was very pleased and amazed thank you for sharing your passion with others. I enjoyed it. And I will be using it and packing it future hiking outings. Thank you👍👍
Great ideas and just what I was looking for. Here are a couple of additional backpacking ideas. Granola with powdered tang, very tasty cold or hot on a winter morn. Also Steel ground outmeal with chia seeds, raisins, brown sugar, butter buds or whatever. Prepackage at home and add water to it the night before, for a short cooking time in morning. Instant oatmeal is just a filler and should be avoided which is what it sounds like you do. Getting ready to try Nido for the first time. Thanks
I've heard of the Tang on cereal thing, but haven't had the courage to try it yet. I east the steel cut oats at home, but too much cook time on the trail. I'll have to try the cold soak some time. You'll like Nido, it's great stuff. Store in the freezer to prevent rancidity.
Darn you! Why didn't I think of grape nuts! Just ridiculously smart! One thing I'd possibly add is a protein powder as well. Nice job. Gotta love experience!
We do mostly car camping but i use these ideas to reduce the amount of stuff in our car. These ideas are great for all camping. I have never liked Grape Nuts but there are tons of granola options in the stores.
@@KurtPapke I didn’t think the powdered milk would have dissolved.... thanks for the eye opener. Keep up the good work. People like me who are newbies really appreciate it.
I add not quite boiling water to this exact mix on cold mornings for a change from oatmeal. Makes a great hot porridge. You can also add some dried berries for a little pop in flavor.
I've been taking them along on backpacking trips for 15 years now. Not every trip, or every breakfast when I do pack them. They have stood the test of time. Tasty, indestructible and tasty!
Well, I think I owe you big time. I have never had Grape-Nuts, and this video inspired me to try them. Outstanding. Great crunch, great flavor, nutritious, indestructible. I added Nido. Once again, outstanding, great flavor. I had some freeze dried strawberries are in hand, added them. Perfect. This breakfast has the potential to be a camping classic for me. Thanks again!
Great video Kurt. Getting ready for a GC trip in October and am looking into finding better food options (low cost, ease of use, etc.). This and your GC exercise video, are in my saved list for easy replay. Thanks for taking the time to record and post!
I do the same with instant oatmeal, nido, and fruit but I pack it in the bags like Mountain House comes in. You can buy empty bags on Amazon in different sizes. That way I just dump the boiling water in the bag with all the ingredients and keep my pot clean. The bags are tough too so I don't worry about flimsy ziplocs in my pack.
Question : Can I put this in vacuum sealed packaging for longer shelf life. If so , what kind of shelf life are we talking about . Really good tips here. Great for prepping.
@@Nel33147 By all means vacuum sealing will get you a little more shelf life. I just throw the meals into our chest freezer where they will keep virtually indefinitely. You have to be careful with fats going rancid, and vacuum sealing won’t help much with that.
Wow glad I watched. I tried a Mountainhouse cereal that was like Grapenuts with blueberries. It was good so I bought Grapenuts and added powdered milk and Truvia. It worked great and now I see your version. I’m on a diet. The Quaker Oats I never thought of, real simple and already packaged. I’m going to try that sometime, thanks

@@KurtPapke I found a way hot cakes are little to no more trouble than doing any other meal. Just requires a bit of prep time ahead. Sorry I can't recall brand name but there is a pancake mix that come in a plastic bottle that you just add water and shake to make the batter. Just take that and pour it into individual servings in small ziplocks. A serving is usually 2 or 3 hotcakes just open your zip lock pour in appropriate amount of water mix and pour and cook the hot cakes. No mess and as quick as boiling water. They are delicious and gives you a healthy meal and you can add dry fruit or what ever you want to add extra flavor in the batter or while cooking chocolate chips are yummy that way. Something I learned in Scouting feeding a bunch of hungry boys on the trail.
