Can someone tell me what happened to petty with a prior? It used to be if you got caught stealing in California your first offense was called petty theft and if you got caught a second time they called it petty with a prior and it was an automatic 15 months in prison.
Depending on when you lived in the Inner Richmond, we may have been neighbors... I lived on California st @10thAv. in the 90's ..loved walking up and down Clement..shout out to Giorgios Pizza, Shuberts, Toy Boat, Blue Danube etc. I remember the Walgreens there. Even in the 90's there was an issue with homeless but no where as bad currently. Love your in-depth, human centric videos. Keep up the great work!
The most important statement I heard was that the criminals can steal $950.00 without being arrested. The city will never survive with this mentality. Society can not survive without order.
The problem is, democrats think people only steal bread to feed their families. They are delusional on crime. Some people steal for easy money or because they don’t wanna work. They aren’t eating those $1,000 hand bags 💼
@@alicewatt416 The powers that be want to take down America. There is no good reason to defund law enforcement and encourage people with no moral compass to steal from hardworking people. I can't imagine what it must feel like for shop owners to see their inventory walk out the door like that. And what about the pitiful souls who take advantage of them? Humanity is at it's lowest right now. But I believe we are living in the last days, so this is what is expected. It's still hard to witness and see our leaders plot our demise.
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area from the 1970's to the 2000's. SF was a pretty city, but had issues, but it never was as bad as this. So sad to see. This is the end result of well intentioned, but ultimately stupid/infantile policy decisions by people who cannot govern with a firm hand and have no respect for the honest/working people in the city.
@@SinAlameda Not federal level, it's local democrats and the ACLU will sue anytime you try to deal with mental issues in California. Seen it many times. You can only put them on a drug program and let them out on the street and drug them again if they become violent. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, I used to work in a nonprofit dealing with druggies, prostitutes, criminals in San Francisco and Palo Alto.
SF Native. Still live and work here. While the COVID restrictions have loosened, very little has changed. To improve its optics, SF has thrown a *lot* of $$$ into its more touristy areas, but that has only pushed crime and homelessness into other regions. Maybe that’s a good thing. Adversely impacted residents will start to rethink the people that they had been voting for.
They wont. They will vote blue no matter who. They voted for Newsome over Larry Elder because they believed a black man was a white supremacist, you couldn't make it up. They may be wealthy in SF and LA, but they are not socially intelligent enough to see the levels of liberal indoctrination that starts in the college system and then controls 99% of the media they consume. I worked with some of the best attorneys in the US in California, when they spoke politics they just rehashed CNN and MSNBC talking points backed up with no evidence, when I dived deeper into debates with follow ups and statistics, they looked horrified that someone would have a differing opinion and challenge them to critically think. I knew then the difference between academic and social intelligence. There are things wrong with some conservative policies, I don't deny that, but California would not be in the mess its in if it had voted Republican to balance it out. California is doomed until they drain the swamp, and it could take decades to fix.
If you have a district attorney that actually put people in jail for stealing, crime will go down. The severity of punishment is not a crime deterent, the prospect of getting caught is a crime deterrant. The problem is not so much as in where the city puts the money. If you put money in a poor area where crime is high and nobody is punished for doing a crime. Whats the point? You just giving money to an area, and people destroy the stuff you invest in. Sounds like a horrible idea to me.
my wife and I spent 3 weeks touring the west coast back in 2003. We started off in San Francisco and loved every moment of it. We actually had a hotel right on Union square and explored the city on foot and by cable car and never had a dodgy moment. It was such a vibrant city centre with tons to see as well as great bars and restaurants. Spooky to see how 20 years can fundamentally change a city.
I went in 2005 and just went again 6 months ago. It's just as amazing of a city as it was then. I've got friends living there still enjoying it from tha time.
Not 20 years. I was there in 2012, and it was just fine then. No problems parking the rental without any smash and grabs, and I felt safe everywhere I went.
As a farmer/rancher from Oklahoma, I thank you. You give better insight into these places than ANY big media has or ever will give. It would be awesome if you came to visit an Oklahoma (or any midwest) farm/ranch to give people a true perspective of what life is like here and how we've been told to view other parts of the country. Even better if you brought someone from one of these big cities/hoods. I think one of the biggest issues in this country is that we are spread so far apart that we can have no real communication with each other and from that comes lack of understanding which causes division. Keep up this work! It is truly needed in todays society!

@@puurrrr I lived in SF a while ago. I've not been there for about 5 years. My guess is it's still a very beautiful city for a visitor if you just avoid certain areas like the tenderloin. Beautiful neighborhoods, restaurants, parks, and museums all over the city. Great hikes near the bay and ocean. There are also beautiful spots to hike just north and south of SF. Some say there is a lot of petty crime but I'd be surprised if you would be in any danger in most areas.
Suggested locations in sf proper, mission district, pier 37. Berkeley is and walnut creek are nice if you can head east. Marin County is must to get that golden gate view
We moved out of SF during the pandemic. In some ways it was like leaving an abusive relationship. Our car window would get broken but then the city would say "I'm sorry, here, have a 70 degree day in February" and things would be better for awhile, then my bike got stolen and the city would say "but look at this beautiful park!" Haven't seen a homeless person or pile of garbage on the street in a year since moving and it's really improved my mental state.
Where does one have to move to avoid that? The whole west coast? I’m from Seattle 😢 so really tired of that. I probably will move to Malibu or Pacific Palisades but I’m really concerned about the homeless still. I’m just tired of our society acting like drug addicts are victims. Society is the victim at this point

San Francisco was a HUGE military town, along with the rest of the Bay Area when I was growing up prior to 1995. You had the Army Presidio, China Basin and Hunter’s Point naval shipyard, Oakland Army Base, Fort Baker in Marin, Alameda Naval Air Station home of the 7th fleet and USS Enterprise, Treasure Island mostly Navy housing, Mare Island in Vallejo was a major nuclear submarine base and repair dry dock, Moffett Field for the Navy in Mountain View, Army in Fort Ord in Monterey was a Tradoc post (for basic training). You couldn’t throw a rock in downtown San Francisco without hitting somebody involved with the military. San Francisco really started going down hill when the military pulled out in 1995. I witnessed it with my own eyes.
Aussie, had a 2 week holiday in S.F. in 1990. I loved it so much, used to have dreams about it for years. This is beyond tragic, watching Bret & Heather on Dark horse, it sounds like Portland is the same...
Peter, your videos and life experiences are simply amazing, it's a wonderful world we live in, yet very sad at the same time, you sir, are one of the best UA-camrs I've ever seen, keep it up bud
I LOVE that you spotlighted Green Apple Books. That was almost my second home when I lived in the Outer Richmond. So happy it's survived all these decades later. And the Inner Richmond was my old stomping grounds. Nice to see Schubert's Bakery is still there. All in all, the city looks better than it did a year or so ago. Thanks for doing this update! Really nice to see the old familiar places!
Simple math, if 1 person in a thousand for the population is stealing $950 per day from businesses 870 x 950 = $826,500 x 365 days per year = $301,672,500 stolen per year. I’m sure it’s more than 870 people per day stealing this amount. I would hazard a guess it’s at least 1 billion dollars or more per year.
Peter , I like how you’re optimistic about the city but the people in charge are on a mission to destroy the middle class of it and it’s not looking like they’re gonna stop so I have to seriously wonder about the future , and this goes for the whole country.
If you voted democrat than you need to take a look in the mirror Ben. They've been doing this for over a decade. They have destroyed that state and indoctrinated a population into thinking mean tweets and transgender rights should be the top of the agenda to run a state instead of sensible economic and safety policies.
After living in SF for 11 years I’ve fully realized the problems in the city are based on heavy drug addiction. It’s a drug problem not a homeless problem
Long term Homelessness more often than not leads to addiction. Now that all street drugs are laced with Fentanyl it’s like Russian roulette - get addicted to opioids or die right away. Terrible. But I agree - zero tolerance on selling, lock up dealers and suppliers and end it.
I recently moved from the outer Richmond to Detroit. Have to say this video stirred up a lot of emotion. SF has a certain quality that when it gets in your bones, it will never leave. Like a first love you can't ever really get over
Exact opposite for us. 3.5 years ago we moved to the Richmond District from metro Detroit. We love it here! The cost of living is tough but the area is just amazing. We enjoyed our time in Michigan as well but after living in the Midwest most of our lives the west coast is a great change
"I could show this side, and tell you this part is true. I could show you this other side and tell you this part is true. The real truth lies somewhere in the middle." This sums up Peter's videos in a nutshell.. It's refreshing and needed in this time of our lives. No bias, no pre-determined objective. Just pointing the camera, and letting the people and the environment tell the story that day. Whatever that story may be.
That's what I'm aiming for Daniel so I'm glad you see this in our work. Natalia (my wife who edits) thanks you too. So much of the balance is done in the edit.
I just visited SF from the UK. It was so sad to see so many homeless people & people queuing up with food stamps. It was so sad. Never seen poverty /drug issues/ mental illness on that scale and not want I expected when visiting USA. I've never seen or smelt anything like it. It made me never want to return to SF. We also saw the lovely sights too but I just felt sad about the state of the city.
I lived there in the late 80's and then moved to Alaska for the next 3 years. I don't recognize any location. You're right, it's shocking and sad. Perhaps it can change for the better.
you can go to any big city and find the worst part and say that. literally any big city. i went to london and was told of vast areas that were bascially no go zones due to knife crime. i could go there and make a lying vid about it and act like that's the whole city. like you do here.
It's not just SF, go to virtually any city in the US and you'll see hundreds of people camping rough and living out of bins. It's a truly backward country.
@@jamescaleb9676 isn't San Francisco like 1 or so million people? London is 9 million, and it has nowhere near as many homeless problems. I've been to both and the vibe in sf is just off. I've never felt unsafe like that in London. Everywhere needs some fixing but sf really really does. Lol.
Love the Video Peter. As someone who is a native San Franciscan I do appreciate how you provide context on the different parts of the city. Most youtubers will only show market at and the tenderloin and show how dirty the entire city but in reality the city has much more to offer. We have Pac Heights, Cow Hollow, Alamo. Square, Sea Cliff, outer Richmond, inner/outer sunset, dogpatch and I go on and on. Yes the city leaders have failed many small business from succeeding with their reluctancy to properly enforce policies. The city has so much more to offer and I hope that many youtubers such as yourself continue to properly share the different views whether positive/ negative to highlight the city as a whole and not just one small section of the city.
Former CA native here and spent a lot of time in SF (The City) in the 80s and 90s. It was always a little sketchy with panhandlers (mostly Dead Heads and winos). But never saw tents on the streets….there was no incentive to live on the streets. This is truly heartbreaking to see this.
The tents really popped up when the lock-down started. They had to find a way of housing the people that wanted to live on the street, even the homeless shelters were locked down, no one in and no one out, so that is when they started handing out tents and letting people camp on the sidewalk, though that ended after a few months, at least camping on the sidewalk, as people were moved to designated areas. A lot of people don't realize that quite a few SF homeless are homeless by choice, even when they are given free housing, they rarely use it. My building has about 1/2 of the apartments as free for low income, with the other half being mostly students and interns (weird mix) and most of the low-income units sit empty or get used for storage, or they just keep revolving new tenants. it is actually pretty crazy, because people that WANT a place to live, can't have one. A lot of them would rather have the freedom to whatever they want on the street, than be in an apartment with rules that limits them. MOST of the homeless that are homeless by accident, unforeseen circumstances and etc, are or do get housed rather quickly, within 1-2 years of staying in a shelter.. now this does require the person to consistently go to the same shelter... after 6 month or so of being responsible and staying in a shelter bed nightly, they get put on a list for housing. Most of the ones you see on the sidewalk don;t want to get up and go to a shelter, they can't do drugs there, they can't even bring in drugs or alcohol, they have rules for the night, so they stay outside, and dont get on the list for housing. SO again, I just want to point out the root cause of all of this.. drugs.
I grew up in SF and my office is near the ferry building, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it's getting way worse. Elders in Chinatown are literally shaking in fear when they go out to run errands. A city I used to be proud to live in, it's sad to see it in such bad condition.
I'm an ex-San Franciscan myself and was so proud to be so. Years ago it was getting to be unliveable and too much insane reasoning. When I boarded my flight to fly to my new residence I looked down at the city I once loved and said, "Good riddance!" All my friends have gone.I never looked back. When people ask where I'm from I am embarrassed to say San Francisco.
democrats policy's are so destructive every city and state they run turns into a shithole, sad thing is people are not even voting for them but with all the voter fraud they just rig the vote anyway.
Totally agree, but I think one of the big problems in California is that it now house like 25 % of all homeless in America. People are coming in from all over the country. I read LA will use $ 800 millions of taxpayers dollars on buying hotels and apartments for the homeless, so they are off the streets. That sounds like a crazy plan to me because these people need real help, but you can't take care of the whole countries problems. It's a sad mess.
Peter and soft white underbelly touched upon it in their video together, but my friend who is a social worker and managed a building for many years in New York has a lot to say about California. Namely that we phone it in and without integrated solutions including mental health, nothing really changes
@@larsstougaard7097 These are expensive short term solutions that just relocate instead of putting $$$ towards the root causes of homelessness. One of government and law enforcement's few absolute responsibilities and purpose is to protect private property rights. Local government has been an absolute failure in this respect. If this doesn't improve, the only residents remaining will be people with nothing to lose and people with large enough salaries to write off the regular thefts and vandalism.
WTF?!?! First of all…our government and law enforcement don’t have only a “few absolute powers”. They have MANY MANY responsibilities. And furthermore…”protecting private property rights” is FARRRRRRRR down at the bottom of that list, kiddo. Providing Public goods Managing externalities Government spending Distribution of income Federal budget Taxation Social security Infrastructure Maintenance Social services That’s just the government. Sorry / not sorry kiddo. YOU think “guarding my property” is their most important function …. However it’s not. Try to be objective. Try to look at the big picture. Try to be UN- refutable.
The government has an obligation to protect our rights, enforce the law and maintain order. SF does it selectively. Nobody has notified the DA that being a public defender was his old job.
No it isnt. That is a fallacy. YOU are responsible for your safety and protection, be that your own person or your property. You have been convinced to believe the government and police are here to serve you (ideally it should) but this is not the case and even if it were is an unrealistic expectation and unfeasible in reality. Government and cops cant be there every second to ensure your safety. You would think after the past couple years people would learn this.
SF used to be a favorite destination for us. I've lost count of all the times we've been there. But things began to get worse quite awhile ago. Poop in the street, prostitutes everywhere, strangers accosting us verbally as we walked around, and more.... After awhile, we just stopped going because we are walkers (and SF is a great walking city), but we began to feel not only disgusted but unsafe. I miss the SF we used to know.
I always dig Peter's work, but as a former San Franciscan myself who just visited about a month ago, I was thoroughly disappointed. The town is awash in leftist sheep, still muzzled even though they don't have to be, either because they're conditioned or want to show each other how much they "care." Or just gullible chickensh-ts. Couldn't get into either the De Young or Academy Of Sciences over the muzzle/quackcine BS. So, F the town. Didn't help when I was charged $2.99 for a can of soda at Stonestown or $11.00 for a sliver of cake by the airport. I loved it for what it was, not what it is now. I'm glad Peter had a better time than I did. P.S. I heard the Cliff House is permanently closed; the Musee Mechanique has been moved to Fisherman's Wharf.
Love your balanced approach to a city you know well. I went to a convention in San Francisco over a decade ago and was shocked at the homelessness and brazen badgering at that time of tourists for money at that time. And, people are definitely friendlier and more non-judgemental here, than most places I've been. The police are also cut from a different cloth than most places. Less ego driven.
It's amazing that law enforcement are forbidden to talk to reporters or journalists about the city. So sad and pathetic the state of affairs in Sam Francisco.

I got offered a trip to San Fran for my 40th birthday in 2018. Just this few years back only was a whole different world. I was walking the street randomly with ny sister & i never felt unsecured at all. There were homelessness but not all these lost souls wandering around the end of their trips. Pretty sad the road the U.S is taking.
Odd that all major and popular cities are encountering the homelessness problem. What I wonder, is if this problem is due mostly to economic factors creating homelessness, or is it due to some policy which has drawn in and attracted the homeless to migrate to these places, therefor concentrating the existing homelessness?
I live in SF and have for 15 years. Covid, entrenched homeless advocates, and persistent drug-alcohol-mental health problems have damaged the city in so many ways. City Hall corruption, ineffective City Supervisors, and disinterested police and courts are the other side of the coin. That said, these problems are not unique to San Francisco. It is perplexing, and very frustrating that SF civic institutions are failing the businesses, residents and guests that enjoy the city.
Same thing with Denver, Austin, and many other major metropolitan. I get it....cost of living is way too much and its causing a problem but the powers to be are doing fuck all to fix the problem. Last time I visited San Francisco was 2015. This video is showing me a complete polar opposite of what I recall. The time before that was ~2009 I think. Crazy to see just how quickly downhill San Fran is going. Him saying that the cop states they are now hands off on a lot of things has me thinking that given how much of a problem smash and grabs are...the regular folks who are looking to the authorities to do something and being met with no action will ultimately lead to a lot of vigilante justice.
@@EXccord it’s interesting to think through a root cause analysis, but it often leads to paralysis. Therein lies the danger as people will be vulnerable to more extreme “fixes”.

I remember being a kid and my dad went to SF for work in the late 80s. He got back and said the sights were cool and all, but there was a huge homeless problem. Like I said that was back in 88 or 89 so... this has been an issue for a very long time there.
Grew up here since the early 80’s We’ve always had the issue but it’s worse now than in the 80’s... it is concentrated by the spaces that hand out food and allow hourly room rentals... coincidence?
Yeah its been ran by Democrats since 1968, they have a one party system there. No shock the city is worse and worse, why would the politicians care if they are not held accountable? I live near Seattle and It’s the same all along the west coast, all trash cities ran by liberals. If they were so smart and college educated why have they not solved the problem? Homelessness is a money maker for them, it’s sad, kick this party out and elect something new.
California has a $98 billion budget surplus from overtaxing us here in the state. Why can't that money go toward real solutions for this homeless problem!?
Really great film. Restores my faith in the city after seeing nothing but Tenederloin and downtown videos this past year. Heartbreaking though to see that Louis' and the Cliff House have closed. Used to love Louis' particularly. Left the city to come home in '97. After seeing this I miss it so much. I too lived in the inner Richmond. Fantastic neighbourhood for a young person.
Very well done cross-section of San Francisco. I lived here for 26 years, between 1993 and 2019, so I know the city well. You've done a great job of capturing what each neighborhood really feels like to be in.
Thanks, Peter, so much for the video! Awesome job capturing both sides of the coin. Even though I left the Bay Area and California years ago for Texas, San Francisco will always be my favorite city. San Francisco is a celebration of it's people, the beautiful scenery, various blend of cultures, and the incredible food one can experience! You brought back a flood of memories. Thanks, brother!
I was there for a few days last year. The nice parts are mostly still really nice (the parks are still beautiful) but the rough parts are still rough. If they can ever figure out the homeless situation and how to police there properly SF would be the prettiest city in the US, hands down.
I just got back from a vacation in SF and to me and absolutely loved it! It's a way more cleaner, less noisy, people are nicer than here in Minneapolis, MN. The homeless situation is seen in that one area, and here and there around, but I've seen worse and nobody bothered us.
Well, I've lived in the Minneapolis area my entire life. I disagree. I cannot understand your language anyway. Minnesota is an OK place to live if you like short summers. In winter, you have to love gyms and restaurants, or be adventurous and love skiing and hiking. Five months of the year its really cold.

I have been visiting SF for over 35 years as my younger brother has lived there that long. I live in Ohio and would go visit him about every 5 years. I used to love going there. The beautiful city, views, people and vibe. But with in the past 10 years, it really changed for the worse. The last time I was out there three years ago, I was appalled. My brother is retired now and can hardly wait to get out of there. My favorite place is the Marina district.
I’m gonna be moving to Cincinnati for school from Santa Rosa. I think California has reached its peak a while ago and it’s only gonna get worse from here. It’s still a beautiful state but it’s being ruined by the government and the people
Great job Peter! The "underbelly" of the city has always been there along with the extreme beauty and prosperity of the city. There is a balance between the two that is tolerable and when it gets out of balance ...we get what we've seen in the last decade or so. Unfortunately we are living in a time of extremes and hopefully this will be replaced by a reasoned approach to the current problems.
That's why the government provides easy to get drugs w/ no police repercussions to these people. It's an easy way to sedate them for life vs. risking them rising up and protesting. And homeless people, all they have is time so they could literally protest for years non stop if they weren't drugged.
First of all Peter, love your channel. Awesome to see someone show both sides and also many positives about the city. Outstanding film maker and high level documentary maker you are.
As someone from the Bay Area, this was a fantastic video. San Francisco is such a beautiful place, and I've seen a change in my time in the city (I was last there in February as well). Hopefully things continue to improve!
Another great video Peter! I love how you show the whole of the city and are fair in your analysis of the current condition of SF. The locals really care about their city and caring for it. The litter pickers in force, the safe space for the homeless and street performers entertaining the general public. Look forward to next weeks upload!
Peter! Thanks for being open and looking at reality. Your channel is something I can reference to folks when we talk to people about what’s really going on! Our Bay Area has changed dramatically. I Miss the old San Francisco. I was a kid in the 80s and 90s but as I got older I could appreciate the culture and the old neighborhoods in the city! It feels like we’ve just turned an new era and there is no going back :(
Such an excellent job going to the ground level of things - without political opinions or bias - and just letting your viewers draw their own conclusions....excellent work, my friend.
Great job giving your honest and fair description of some of the hotspots in SF today. I agree with you that there are some improvements being made in the city. Unfortunately I see this homelessness/tent popup situation around a lot of beautiful cities. It is hard to look at and live with. Sometimes I go around cleaning areas but some of the ppl are questionable and scary Thank you.
Thanks for making this video. It seems like so many major US cities, including my home of Philadelphia are in the same condition. They are on the road to recovery generally, but the most economically disadvantaged communities were hit the hardest and will take the longest to recover. The Pandemic has been mentally and emotionally damaging for so many people, and that trauma is going to be around for years. There are no simple solutions to complex problems.
The solution is they gotta clean house with the politicians, when individuals are committed to clean up the city, results are evident. It would’ve been done decades ago.
Great video 👌 I was there over ten years ago and went to a lot of the places you featured.. and I think you summed up the city very much the same way I saw it. I'd travelled alone from England and was quite overwhelmed by SF in all sorts of ways.
I lived in the City for 20 years. I don't visit it anymore. It is simply unlivable for ordinary people, and will remain so as long as the DA refuses to do their job, and property crimes up to $950 are regarded as misdemeanors. That makes the City a lawless place. I won't even visit because I don't want my car windows broken out, parking is insanely expensive, and ticketing is predatory. You can't go to City Hall or the Opera House without sidestepping piles of human waste.
I am from Germany and was in San Francisco for the first time in 2016 during my US road trip. I was shocked how different San Francisco is from what you see in the movies. Everywhere it smelled like urine and the homeless were just all over the place. Then there were all the tourists down at Fishermans Dwarf (reminiscent of a fair by now) and the selfie sticks in the cable cars. I hardly left the car and just fled the city. For showering the local pool wanted 25 USD per person :D Since San Francisco I appreciate LA even more. Everything is more relaxed, most homeless people concentrate on Skid Row and a shower is available for 2-5 USD in so many recreation pools. The only thing I remember very positively about SF is the cool breeze that blows even in summer.
once upon a time i thought i wanted to see SF. i've done a one eighty on that. i live next door to NYC where i worked for years. despite having a couple of family members there they travel to see me. i can't bear having to look over my shoulder and you can just forget the rampant crime in the subways. it starts at the top with city leaders and DA's.
Right on Peter, as a SF native I really dislike what has become of the city - but you managed to remind of some of the great areas of SF. It's still a beautiful city and has so much to offer. Cheers!
the great areas of san francisco only exist now because the Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsome types live there and they would NEVER subject their quality of life and safety to the homeless, unwashed and menacing drug addicts currently defecating on the city's sidewalks.

Like you said "20 steps and your in a different world" I was living in SF back in 92 and remembered it being exactly like it is today.. walk from Union Square to Cinatown then cross into the business district and hit market and tenderloin and you realize how compact and completely different each part is. I recall the homeless gal that hung out with her daughter downtown panhandling and afterwards her husband would pick her up in a BMW while on his way home.
I left my ❤️ in SF. Lived/worked there, and in the Bay Area, for years and left in ‘89. Some of my best memories of my life are from that time. Thank you for this!

Come visit Seattle. Very similar fate as SF. It’s sad. I lived, went to school, and worked in Seattle and it’s become a dumpster fire in the past five years. I have visited SF many times. I’m sad to see it’s struggling. Such a fun city.
True. I visited Seattle for a week last February and it was a dump. So much trash everywhere. Congestion. The two parks I visited were packed to the gills. There didn't seem to be any where you could go to get away from it all. The architecture was a monoculture of big boxey new buildings. I had no desire to go back. Maybe its better now. I don't know.
The closing of independent businesses contrasted with continued tech advances and wealthy folks and their private school growth-- all are evidence of the demise of the middle class in the States.

Love your stuff dude.
They can steal up to $950….per establishment. So you could go from store to store….rinse and repeat. Revolving door and on the streets within hrs.
Yes that blew my mind, how can businesses survive that. So people can just walk in and help themselves to hard working people's livelihoods 🤯
@@alicewatt416 The powers that be want to take down America. There is no good reason to defund law enforcement and encourage people with no moral compass to steal from hardworking people.
"The road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions" These are the results of "feel good" Ivy league polices that never worked.
And decades of policies that have increased wealth inequality, a lack of mental health services, etc., And that's largely at the federal level.
Liberals in charge way too long cause this. Good example of what the entire country would look like.
@@SinAlameda Not federal level, it's local democrats and the ACLU will sue anytime you try to deal with mental issues in California. Seen it many times. You can only put them on a drug program and let them out on the street and drug them again if they become violent. @@bearmerica6668 You are absolutely correct on that. See it here in Los Angeles, studied it for many years. ACLU and liberal judges caused this mess.
Actually most voters dont think retrospectively
@@MEGAsporg12 Exactly. They will vote London Breed to stay on. Moron voters.

Exactly, Same with Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, etc..
Agreed. We see it here in SoCal as well. Unlimited supply of drugs from the border and ... people die. Is that what 'they' want?

Exact opposite for us. 3.5 years ago we moved to the Richmond District from metro Detroit. We love it here! The cost of living is tough but the area is just amazing. We enjoyed our time in Michigan as well but after living in the Midwest most of our lives the west coast is a great change
"I could show this side, and tell you this part is true. I could show you this other side and tell you this part is true. The real truth lies somewhere in the middle."
This sums up Peter's videos in a nutshell..

@@jamescaleb9676 that doesn’t make it ok. What kind of mentality is that
@@jamescaleb9676 isn't San Francisco like 1 or so million people?
Didn't the city cut down or trim back the trees (early 90's) at the park off of Haight? Supposedly it was to run out the homeless from the park.
Dead heads? Bs
@@z_bee13 Stinky as*burn outs wearing ponchos…sorry, shouldn’t have insulated a segment of the homeless by referring to some of them as Dead Heads
SO again, I just want to point out the root cause of all of this.. drugs.
@@HicSvntDracones This is exactly right.

What “write off” covers theft in vandalism? I’d like to take it too!
Remember its racist to enforce the law

First of all…our government and law enforcement don’t have only a “few absolute powers”.
They have MANY MANY responsibilities.
And furthermore…”protecting private property rights” is FARRRRRRRR down at the bottom of that list, kiddo.

Managing externalities
Government spending
Distribution of income
Federal budget
Taxation
Social security
Infrastructure
Maintenance

That’s just the government.
Sorry / not sorry kiddo.
YOU think “guarding my property” is their most important function …. However it’s not.

Odd that all major and popular cities are encountering the homelessness problem. It is perplexing, and very frustrating that SF civic institutions are failing the businesses, residents and guests that enjoy the city.

I remember being a kid and my dad went to SF for work in the late 80s. He got back and said the sights were cool and all, but there was a huge homeless problem. Like I said that was back in 88 or 89 so... this has been an issue for a very long time there.
They keep coming here because the local government encourages them to do so through legislations which welcome crime and poverty to thrive.
S F keeps voting for the same people---different bodies
I lived in the city in 1992 & loved it. Regularly took advantage of all the things to do, see & eat. It’s sad to hear it’s gone downhill.
Astounding city and people. They all deserve much more. Hope SF will see better days.
Thanks, brother!
texas is ass. Why would you go there. So many better places.
I was there for a few days last year. The nice parts are mostly still really nice (the parks are still beautiful) but the rough parts are still rough. If they can ever figure out the homeless situation and how to police there properly SF would be the prettiest city in the US, hands down.
Watching videos of closed businesses and homeless all the way down Market St. right now
I used to love SF, lived there in the 80’s , I can’t stand to drive through there anymore. California has way too many problems now days .
i wonder why?
I just got back from a vacation in SF and to me and absolutely loved it! It's a way more cleaner, less noisy, people are nicer than here in Minneapolis, MN. The homeless situation is seen in that one area, and here and there around, but I've seen worse and nobody bothered us.
more cleaner
Lol
Well, I've lived in the Minneapolis area my entire life. I disagree. I cannot understand your language anyway.
Minnesota is an OK place to live if you like short summers. In winter, you have to love gyms and restaurants, or be adventurous and love skiing and hiking. Five months of the year its really cold.
@@leomarkaable1 I am just saying from my point of view. I speak 2 languages and English is my 2nd, so, if you can't understand it, then your own fault. If you like Mpls, good for you. I grew up in Europe, life's different life over there and I don't like Mpls. All I like it's the Uptown lakes. Have a great weekend.
@Nemusis 999 Not into politics, and not American, so I don't really care about it...
i love your videos. They really show the local vibe and soul of the place.
Ah yes, Marina bro feels uncomfy with homeless people and POCs
I’m gonna be moving to Cincinnati for school from Santa Rosa. I think California has reached its peak a while ago and it’s only gonna get worse from here. It’s still a beautiful state but it’s being ruined by the government and the people
That’s how long it takes for democrats to destroy a city and society. Just like these destroyed Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore, NYC,…..
Oh my God, balance. Nothing balanced about the homeless.
The citizens need to be able to hold the politicians accountable
Democrats can put any morons to run for office and they will still win.
It's the "citizens" that keep voting for these politicians that's the reason that things never change. There are no adults in the room.
@@destinyreturns4885 they voted for these nuts…what do they expect.

Say what? I don't have a channel and I;m not making videos.
I can see that liberal policies have ruined this town!!!
Baldy scum sides with the greedy and the fake.
If you think there's not bias here then you've got to wake up my friend
@@matt72986 YEARGH, just tellin' it like it is Matt! 😡
Great job giving your honest and fair description of some of the hotspots in SF today. I agree with you that there are some improvements being made in the city. Unfortunately I see this homelessness/tent popup situation around a lot of beautiful cities. It is hard to look at and live with. Sometimes I go around cleaning areas but some of the ppl are questionable and scary
Thank you.
Shocking decline but I left 12 years ago and it was already heading south
Shame, much to love yet unsustainable for living if you’re not a 1%er
Congrats you got out early. You’re very aware.
More like major DEMOCRAT run cities.
there is no middle class in major American cities.
Great video 👌
I was there over ten years ago and went to a lot of the places you featured.. and I think you summed up the city very much the same way I saw it.
We’re about to toss out the D.A. in a special recall election this spring 🤞
@@jonaskessler326 one official won't change anything
@@terryjp3050 very true. The Mayor and the entire board of supervisors need to be tossed as well if you ask me.
That $950 limit is a state law. Prop 47.
For showering the local pool wanted 25 USD per person :D
Since San Francisco I appreciate LA even more.
Don’t come we don’t want cha here
Right on Peter, as a SF native I really dislike what has become of the city - but you managed to remind of some of the great areas of SF.
No it is grosser than a public toilet, which is all that most people use it for 👌
@@kxkxkxkx oh sweetie I’m sure you don’t go to SF. Give yourself a break.

Thanks for sharing this video,I live in the UK and don’t go on Aeroplanes so it’s great to see San Francisco,I’m a big fan of the Ironside series I read the old Hall of Justice building at 750 Kearny Street opposite Portsmouth Square was Demolished before Ironside even Aired.
Peter, first time viewer. Got me! Great down to earth stuff.
My son (14yrs) & I visited from the UK 3 wks ago staying in Union Square. Along with the homelessness was the truly heartbreaking levels of drug and mental health issues.
Its bad, but not as bad as when I stopped by London last month.
People get what they vote for. Want change- vote differently. Pretty simple. Giuliani cleaned up NYC quite successfully.
Next time, go to South Africa instead.
Just searched San Francisco and this was the first video that came up. Thanks for this. Visiting soon and would love to check out that bookshop. I hope we can figure out a solution for these rampant mental health and homelessness issues. I really feel badly for all the people out there on the streets.
I’m a East Bay native. Just curious what region you relocated to back in 1990?
@@RegM86 Hi Reg, I lived in a few different areas of Oakland/Alameda. Went to Skyline High, graduated in ‘80. Now in PA. You?
One of the good things about the people you talked with through your videos, they talked so easy and they were so comfortable sharing their stories, I like your vlogs keep going Peter 🙏💗
Portland is also a complete dump
The closing of independent businesses contrasted with continued tech advances and wealthy folks and their private school growth-- all are evidence of the demise of the middle class in the States.
Thanks again Peter for another great video. I look forward all week to see your videos on the weekend. I am a die-hard PS fan of your work. Keep the great videos coming.
Love your stuff dude. As a local my short personal summary would be: getting better compared to peak pandemic, still not the same, and an incredibly far departure from the frankly magical place it was up until the early to mid 2000s. I will say though, and this is a bit of surprise, I live on the Marin side of the bridge and it's far better (I'm talking both covid attitudes and improving homeless situation) over here. Was at a packed bar last night with not a mask in sight
What's wrong with masks?
Why do masks trigger pple so much?
It's one of the most important items to help stop the spread of covid19.
Pple are such snowflakes when it comes to masks.
Sad

I am scared to go back because Ive heard the rumors about the crime + homeless getting so bad and I think it would break my heart. This video gave great insight into what its really like. Thank you Peter!
I made it a whole 6 weeks in the summer of 2012 before I hauled ass back to Texas. I'm not built for that level of depravity on such a grand scale. I felt dehumanized just being around it.
My friend went to downtown SF for business and wanted to grab a bite to eat at some pizza joint. He said the stench of urine was so unbearable, you couldn't escape it. He had to go back to his hotel. So sad cuz I remember back in 2005 it was so nice.
Bro in Cleveland Ohio, or anywhere in the Midwest, you can get a 2 to 3 bdrm home in an all white suburb for 90k 😂 fckin $480 a month mortgage payment and ur property taxes MIGHT be $1200/year. All utilities totalling maybe 200 a month, 300 in the winters cuz of running the heat all day everyday. Why the fuck do ppl wanna live in Cali?
I lived north of Sacramento in the Marysville/Yuba City area in Sutter County from 2014 thru January 2016 and I liked it, but it's not worth it.
