That generation Explorer is rock solid, assuming you get one with the 5.0L engine. The 4R70W transmission is damn near indestructible. Rear axle has 31 spline shafts, most are limited slip with either 3.73 or 4.10 gears. They are governed at a maximum speed of 110mph.
That Limited should be saved! It's leather interior is amazing! Always liked the 1995-2001 Limited and Eddie Bauer edition Explorers! Those 4.0V6 are one of Ford's best. Transmissions though are the weak link. Save it Jay!
Yep, I have a 98 since a year ago, and there's at least 9 more in town of 13,000. Take care of them and they last. But where did he get that rust free one?
Please take note and to view this!! i have one of these explorer limited from 1996 but mine has the 5.0 302 v8 and we had it since 2000 and has 150k. Please whatever you do KEEP THIS CAR!!! you willl not regret using it it is a wonderful suv i live in d.c and we take this car to north carolina one or twice every year and never let us down. It is worth keeping plus its almost a classic! Thanks
I just sold my 01 Limited V-8. I got $2k for it with 195k miles. Just as clean as the one in the video. Definitely worth cleaning and getting it running. The 4.0L V-6 got the 4X4 dial or no 4WD. And the 5.0 got only an AWD with no dial!
That's a pretty nice looking Limited! Those black wheel moldings are a little bit odd, as the Limiteds were supposed to have a monochromatic paint scheme, but I still think this one would still clean up pretty well- especially that interior! I personally love these cars- I have a '98 Eddie Bauer myself, and would love to get a Limited one day. Hope someone saves this one!
@fisherwhite6621 I think those were put on there by the previous owner, the bare plastic crap makes it look super cheap. Can’t stand those fender flares on another vehicle unless they’re painted.
Hey Jay, i have had 3 of these and love them to death with no problems. My current 1 is a '01 White Limited, it had 133,000 on it when i bought it 6 yrs ago and now has 263,000 on it with no leaks or troubles. I spray the underneath/doors/rockers with used motor oil every year and so i have no rust period. I learned that from an old guy i worked with. If you think about it, oil repels water/salt/rust. I love my Explorer, regular oil changes etc.
Wow. . Man. .that's in good shape! ! I like explorers! ! I remember these when new at the dealer.. my high school teacher had a new one back in 95. . They were over 40k dollars new canadian! This one has more life left in it. . If closer I'd buy it
Its a great find what an excellent condition it is in you should do a restore or bring it back up to good working order and seal those under frame rails so they don't rust
Just get that cap on engine from other explorer, fill it up with all liquids, pump or fix that tire (idk if its popped), put that panel back in place and pressure wash it. It will be like new
i want my green 94 ford explorer xlt back sooo badly :( jay you woukd have loved it. i sadly had to get rid of it cause we moved to tennessee from California and the c-3trans was dead first and reverse was gone at only 81,101 miles. this thing... no joke inside and out looked like the day it came off the show room floor top to bottom. im 25 my grandfather gave it to me before he passed.
My parents had one of these about 10 years back, was a 97 explorer limited, was a weird green colour on the outside and the interior was the exact same as that. When they bought it, it had around 280000kms on it and we sold it 2 years later with 330000kms on it. The only problems we ever had were the previous owner cobbled some wire and that of course melted but was easy to fix, and it had an exhaust leak. That good old v8 alway had plenty of power though.
Jay, I have looked at your videos for one on the red 68 Ford LTD. Can you make a video on it, and maybe even give an idea of what you guys want for it. I am starting to look for another winter project. I would like to see the whole body, inside... seats door panels headliner etc, floor pans and drivetrain, and if the engine is stuck or not. Looking for a mostly complete car. Howard
That one is far too good to junk unless it has some serious mechanical problems. I bet you've probably got one in the yard that could donate that aerial/antenna base and maybe some other stuff...
'Body MOLDings' HaHa. Very good But I don't know if it would prove economical/profitable to get this car running.. And it's a shame too coz these were NICE. We all need more enthusiasm for what we love. Yep. Stay bright n keen because I believe You have the tone just about right ! (I mean Who doesn't love cars ?)
I had this model Ford Explorer Limited here in Australia and it never missed a beat. When i did sell mine it have well over 320,000 Kilometres on it (it's about 200,000 miles) . I think you should save this car and would love to see the Before and After wash.
garrard bennett A few years ago my parents sold a 96 explorer with the 4.0 and it had around 280k miles. The engine was noticably weaker on power but was the main daily driver since around 2000. My parents bought it around when I was born so I have a lot of good memories with it and so I was sad to see it go.
I've got a Mercury Mountaineer (Same thing as a Ford Explorer) with a 4.0, and its got well over 310,000 miles. Still runs like a top, and I drive it cross country often. Everything on it works perfectly, and with it being in Texas, it doesn't have a lick of rust. If the engine does ever decide to die, I'll probably just throw another in.
On my way back from the Bradford county manner in Burlington PA after playing country Gospel for the residents down there in Bentley Creek PA I saw an old hearse sitting in the driveway of a house. The doors were all opened. I think someone at that house bought it off eBay. Or at an abandoned vehicle auction in Buffalo NY. Fan of restoring old vehicles Robert Gildea. PS the hearse was an old brown one
Those ohv's last forever....just don't let it overheat....change the thermostat prematurely for preventative maintenance and flush radiator .....engine will last till 400,000 + Had Ranger with one...tons of miles and have Sploder now with one...
@@Fransais Awesome....you'll probably need to have the trans rebuilt soon....out here in So Cal where I'm at I have a guy who'll do complete rebuild with installation / new torque conv etc for $1,200 out the door....shop around... check craigslist for rebuild shops... you can always siphon out a few ounces of trans fluid and replace with Lucas trans treatment....really works / extends trans life...not snake oil..
This one is a Model Year 2000 or earlier. The back hatch changed to a push-button in 2001. The Limiteds had all-body color moldings, auto lights, wipers, memory seats, trip computer and were AWD. The next step below was an XLT like I had that were 2WD/4WD switchable. Something I preferred at the time. Nice ride once it is cleaned up. These later 1st Gen explorers have aged well.
I literally said its a 1997 in the title. But your wrong, the push button hatch started midway into 98. Like the one my brother drives. These are super good suvs for the money. Just make sure you get one that has the serviceable transmission
My bad wasn't reading closely enough instead of looking at the pictures. I got rid of mine for a Centennial Edition Mustang GT Convertible before I had to worry about the transmission issues. If I were searching for an old(er) SUV, it would either be one of these or the XJ Cherokees with the 4.0 Litre. My sister had a SportTrac. It was garbage, surprisingly. But you still see quite a few of those around.
Understood. I was considering 1991-2001 (based on the Ranger) as 1st gen, with 1995 beginning the face lifted 1st gen. When it changed to another platform, that would mark the beginning of Gen 2. In my mind, and you are free to disagree, a major platform change marks a generation change - such as Mustang moving from Fox Body to the heavily revised SN95. Wikipedia considers them as you do, however, one could note the greenhouse did not change while the Explorer was based on the Ranger.
I'm a Ford man myself but I prefer the 91-94s Yeah the a4ld automatic transmissions aren't meant for towing and there's also the infamous Firestone tire disaster but what shouldn't be forgotten is that the 91-94s outsold the Jeep Cherokee two to one. For a Jeep hater like mysef it can't get any better than that so yeah whatever issues the 91-94s had they still are good suvs. But I can see your interpretation of how you could view 1991-2001 as first gen.
You should do a video of the clean up and get it running and keep it. Your right them wheels are great. And why was it scrapped? All it needs was some love
This thing has history in my town. Its literally been sitting under a carport, beside this old convenience store near downtown for YEARS. As long as i can remember its been sitting there. i use to pass it all the time, wondering why it was left. It was parked beside an older rollback truck, and then out behind all of it was an older model Cadillac. As to why it was left? The world may never know...
A lady I know just dropped close to $4500 on one of these... actually, it was an Eddie Bauer and about the same year. The engine light came on during her way home. A lot of money.
Aww poor baby. shes just needs a new home and a caring owner
@Camden Elijah hacking is a douche move. It's an impressive skill but very douchy
I couldn't agree more, you should 100% save that Explorer.
Definitely needs to be saved, not parted
Some yuppie probably refinanced his house to buy that back then.
Even if the engine is bad it's worth putting another engine into it
Fix it and keep it. You deserve it Jay.
Top of line back in 97.
Only thing missing is the 5.0 V8 some explorers had.
Kevin Johnson you can tell it’s a v6 because 5.0 explorers only came with AWD. This has selectable 4WD so it’s for sure a 4.0.
wow dang that interior is MINT!
wonder why they it sit for so many years?????
My 5.0 Mercury mountaineer has been an amazing little truck. They are tough!
That Limited should be saved! It's leather interior is amazing! Always liked the 1995-2001 Limited and Eddie Bauer edition Explorers! Those 4.0V6 are one of Ford's best. Transmissions though are the weak link. Save it Jay!
They're pretty slow though.
I ve had more problems with the sohc 4.0s than I have the transmissions.
Good buy. I had one of the preproduction Explorer 1990 and it had a great 4 liter engine, very good runner.
I'm quite suprised at how many of these explorers (1995-2001 generation) that I still see on the road. I have a 1999 and my dad has a 1994.
Yep, I have a 98 since a year ago, and there's at least 9 more in town of 13,000. Take care of them and they last. But where did he get that rust free one?

Never ceases to amaze me what people throw away, I am not a ford guy but that thing is mint.
A car like that one here would be worth a fortune! Love it!
yes please power wash it will be satisfying
Dang. That Explorer was the nicest of the nice back in the day.

Very nice . Who ever get this beautiful Ford explorer please take very good care of it . Once again very nice .
Good find I love to see this thing run
I would save it
I wish i could. Not enough time or money
Jay Smart Even with all that dirt and mold growing on the side, the car's in too good a shape to put it through the crusher.
These cars last hella long my dad has the 1999 one and he's been rear ended 3 times hella bad car still drives fine except for a broken suspension
Jay Smart sell it please
That's a pretty nice looking Limited! Now thats a good SUV its a keeper! one of the best one out there in the roads.
Dude! Save that thing, even if you don't have time to work on it now. Those are hard to find in that good of condition. Totally worth keeping.
Yes jay clean er up and do your magic .make the old girl shine again.

Yes I would love to see how well this one cleans up!
This is one that's probably worth saving
I wish I had one. I love this vintage of explorer, it was my first car, it died after 500k miles. I miss it!
Can't wait too see this getting power washed.... Keep up the great vids Jay
I will admit I think I like these Explorers better than the new ones
That's a nice fine I keep it for myself in and out and still look good for the year
Fresh from Jurassic Park 😁

Excellent find
10 years from now these Explorer's are going to be like what Broncos and Defenders are today.
As long as it runs I say it's worth saving
this thing is mint
Ikr,too cool to be destroyed
Will you save this car?
Probably not
Jay Smart why not?
Jay Smart what's worng with it???? Motor blowed or what
Jay Smart why not
Transplant the 302 out of the previous Explorer into this body.
Graet looking car Jay!!
I have no self control I'd be buying all these cars you come across.
Save it Jay, Save it. It's got your name on it. You can use a Ford Explorer Limited right? LOL. Great video bro, this is so worth saving.
I have never seen that much mildew on a vehicle.
Nice cars you show
Its a great find what an excellent condition it is in you should do a restore or bring it back up to good working order and seal those under frame rails so they don't rust
That looks like a car that would go into an apocalyptic movie
4.0 v6 probably parked due to jumping time.. they seemed to have lots of issues with it during those years with that engine
Please don't crush the ford
Just get that cap on engine from other explorer, fill it up with all liquids, pump or fix that tire (idk if its popped), put that panel back in place and pressure wash it. It will be like new

But what about the doug score??
what?
robert stewart LOL
robert stewart but does it come with a *bumper to bumper warranty* ?
KoenigseggAC Fuck that Douche
robert stewart lol
That is a very good find
It was really cool!
Jay , did it get crushed?
The moss is slowly painting the car green.
A bunch of features folks take for granted on today's SUVs
Your not kidding, most of this stuff was highly optional back then. And now its just standard garbage.
Nice truck

Worth $2000 all day long minus the mold.

Jay smart those 97 explorer limiteds are starting to get rare.I would recommend you saving this car.it would cost a lot of money soon
Lovely motor! Must be put back on the road???
Bet it will look good after you pressure wash it :)
This car is gorgeous...
Turn it into a Jungle Explorer from Jurassic park!!
Sweet ride id drive that on the daily.
That one is far too good to junk unless it has some serious mechanical problems. I bet you've probably got one in the yard that could donate that aerial/antenna base and maybe some other stuff...
save this one Jay.
Do you have keys? And I would love to see it get cleaned
Have a 2000 Ford Explorer limited 5.0 V8 with only 83,000 miles and it looked brand new also its dark blue
This car needs a good old clean☺️☺️
Such a shame to see that junked. That was a nice truck back in the day and not cheap either. Hope you guys are able to save it.
Nice Explorer. Hopefully someone saves it.
'Body MOLDings' HaHa. Very good But I don't know if it would prove economical/profitable to get this car running..
And it's a shame too coz these were NICE. We all need more enthusiasm for what we love. Yep. Stay bright n keen because I believe You have the tone just about right ! (I mean Who doesn't love cars ?)
pretty nice
Let's keep in mind, that 2 of the top 10 makes of cars scraped during 'cash for clunkers' were Ford Explorers!!!! CRUSH IT!!!
No no! haha, thats why its important to save what we can now!
4.0L SOHC in that one. Does it start / run /drive ? The timing components and transmissions are not particularly strong on these...
I had this model Ford Explorer Limited here in Australia and it never missed a beat. When i did sell mine it have well over 320,000 Kilometres on it (it's about 200,000 miles) . I think you should save this car and would love to see the Before and After wash.

Did you ever video of you pressure washing this? I'd like to see what it would look like
If I had a trailer I would come pick that thing up.
Dang! Perfectly good vehicle!!
What's your opinion on Ford Escapes? You seem to like Fords.
I'd buy that in a heartbeat
I daily drive a 97 explorer 4.0 ohv v6. Not the best gas mileage but I love my explorer. Gonna drive it till it drops
