I agree. I’m a gardener and have learned so much from his principles of tree care. Nigel’s videos help bridge the cold months when I’m not able to be in the garden. ❤😊

Maybe invest in a pair of detail or embroidery scissors. Love the mini bonsais. Can have a lot more of these than the usual ones. Thank you Nigel.

I love your mini trees! 🌲🌳😊 A nail scissors is very helpful for me for detailed pruning work. Maybe something for you, too.

    Very surgical, detailed pruning!
I like the Dwarf Hinoki. It might not be the easiest to style, but it can make fantastic Bonsai.
Unfortunately, it seems Hinoki doesn't really back bud, but I believe they grow well from cuttings.
Maybe a cutting would have less of a bulge at the bottom. But they make great forest plantings, too!
Also, lots of soap in this video. I hope that got rid of the insect problems..!

removal of the mealybugs works well with cotton buds dipped in soap/spiritus water. (And yeah, after that you best still speay the tree). but the cottong buds are a usefull cleanup instrument.

Aphids too. Sometimes manual cleanup helps get the bulk off

Lantana has a nice trunk developing. Very nice pruning on this Thuja. Fits nice in the pot. That mini Portulacaria forest is really cool. Pruning is a must to keep them in their miniature form. Great Part 2.

This series certainly redefines "big cut!" I'm surprised how instructive it's been watching how important the slightest clipping redirects plant vigor and shaping the developing design. Sharpened scissors absolutely essential for this scale of work!

There is one of these for sale at my local nursery in Oregon it’s bigger like a foot and half tall but so neat looking I think it’s called Dwarf Chirimen Hinoki. I know nothing about bonsai but this tree is screaming at me to buy it. I would enjoy making sure it grows the way I like, right now it looks perfect but I know it will likely change. Says it’s a rare find on the tag…

I have watched several of your videos now and I really enjoy them. Sorry if you have said this in your videos, but where are you geographically? That would help put into context the care of your trees, the soil used, watering frequency, etc. Thanks. Me being in USDA zone 6b i have limited options.

Nigel-have you considered doing a video on temperature management in your glass greenhouse now that you have had it a couple of years? I doubt it is much of an issue in summer since your trees are mainly out on the benches. However, in winter green houses can experience wide variations in temperature. How do you manage that so your trees don’t break dormancy too early or cook in the sun? And what about your cold arctic nights? I am interested since I am considering buying a small green house and am researching how to plan for similar issues. Thanks- Larry

Would planting the tree deeper and burying the bulge be a possible solution for the base of your hinoki cypress?
    PS: Looks Great!!!
