  • Continuing with our almost daily excursions to Kennedy Park in Lima, Peru, we were back yet again to sample a different kind of Peruvian street food snack/dessert. This time around we had Turrón on our radar. This Spanish dessert is a confection consisting of nuts, egg white, sugar and honey formed into a round cake. The Peruvian cuisine interpretation of turrón is typically soft and often flavored with anise. The one we tried tasted a lot like fruit loops to us. We weren't able to tell if the sticky orange sauce was a kind of honey, syrup or orange marmalade. Coming in at only 3 Soles per serving it's easily the cheapest Peruvian street food we've sampled thus far. For those on a backpacker budget load up whether you like it or not ;)

Eating Turrón in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are back at our favourite park once again. This is Parque Kennedy and we are here for dessert. What else. So today we are going to be sampling something that is called Turrón.
So part of reason we like coming here are all of the cats. There must be hundreds of them and they are so friendly. They just want to be scratched and petted. Look there is another one coming up right behind you. Oh, Hello. Hello, cat. Look at you. You're a sweet one. You're still a kitten. Oh, it is sitting on me. I've made a new friend. Hi, Cat. Hello, cat.
So what have you got over here? Okay, so we ended up getting two different things. This is called Turrone. And over here, oh my goodness, it already got stuck to my leg. This giant thing over here is called Torreja.
So they look kind of different but they are both actually made with the same ingredients. So all this is is deep-fried flower and then they drizzle honey over top. Sounds good enough to me? Yeah. Let's try it. The first bite. The first bite. Big moment here. Here we go.
It looks sticky. I think you bit off a little more than you can chew there. This is interesting. It's getting stuck to my teeth. A little difficult to talk right now but the honey kind of has an orange flavor to it. And also it is a lot stickier than honey. I wonder if it is more of a marmalade. Kind of an orange marmalade. Do you think, maybe? Maybe. They told me honey but I don't know. No honey for the bunny. Mmmm. It is nice. Really crsipy. The dough itself is really not really very flavorful because I mean it is just flour but the honey that is what you can taste. The orange flavoured honey. Want to have some?
Alright, it is my turn. Oh, you can take a bigger bite than that. I don't want to get all of that sticky stuff all over my face. We don't have any napkins out here.
This probably looks more like French Fries with like ketchup drizzled all over them but in fact this is the second dessert we're going to be trying. And I've noticed since we've come to Lima that cakes and other things tend to have these little doughy bits. Crunchy doughy bits and so let's try it here. Like I don't see myself breaking it off with my hand. I'm just going to take a bite. Mmmm.
That is good. You know what, I think I actually prefer this one to the big pizza shaped one I had.
Similar flavour to the previous one. More or less the same thing. Just kind of slightly different. You know what? It kind of tastes like Fruit Loops. When you really chew on it for a while it is like really sugary Fruit Loops. Maybe that is why we like it so much. We grew up eating Fruit Loops. Fruit Loops guys. Fruit Loops. Peruvian Fruit Loops.
So how much did today's dessert cost? Well, this was probably our cheapest street food / dessert that we've had since we've come to Peru. This one came to three Soles each. So that is a dollar for each of those delicious little snacks we had. So you know, if you're on a budget you can really load up on those.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano.

That's not turrón, it's actually cachanga. Turrón is usually sold in October, and being a turrón fan myself I was actually kinda hoping I could learn where to buy them in this time of the year. Anyway, hope you had a good trip!!

Stayed at a Hotel near Kennedy Park at the end of our tour of Peru. Video brings back memories of visiting Kennedy Park and the neighborhood. I remember the Mcdonnals across the street, the Church and the many painters selling their paintings around the park. Don't remember seeing cats, just a lot of people and food vendors.

In the Philippines, we have our version of turon (we pronounce and write it with single r) but it's banana with sugar wrapped in a thin wrapper made of flour.

What we call miel or honey in Lima, it is sugar water and orange juice or fruits and cooked until it softly caramelize.

I'm kind of sad everytime the vid. is over. Well, as a Lima girl, I have to say that those are not turron. The turron is diferent is like a cake made with honey and chancaca. In Miraflores are selling Turrones and "king kong" (I like more King kong). There are also other types of churro. My favorite is in Centro de Lima but Idk if you might like to go over there. Those are, Tortillas or Torrejas (the big one) and the other one is called "bombas" or at least that's how I call it. If you are in that park, don't forget to try the "mazamorra", "arroz con Leche". Also "tejas" , "1000 hojas" and "helado de lucuma" and "Torta de Guanabana" (traditional fruits). There's also a typical fruit called "granadilla" and the juice of "maracuya". Don't forget the picture with the Statue of Kennedy, in the church and go to Donofrio (One of the first Italians that came to Peru). I also recommend to go to Barranco to eat the real Picarones with his anticuchos, and to relax try "El Olivar"(San Isidro) or "El Parque de la Amistad (Surco. This one offers some food). I don't said much because you have relatives so I guess they might help you but just in case. I love more quite places. Miraflores is a nice neighborhood but to me is very loud. And go to "El Parque del Amor". The seats have phrases from romantic books from Peruvian Writers. Also maybe, If you go to Barranco, Go to the Hotel of Victor Delfin, He is the same Artist that did the Sculptor in "El Parque del Amor". If you go to "El centro de Lima" "El Jordano", Is one of the only places that still in the same zone and with the same service from the 40's. El Centro de Lima has the History of Lima and from there you'll understand many things. Every food, every dance, every song has a history. "Cholo soy", "La flor de la Canela" (Chabuca Granda was the inspiration to build "El Puente de los suspiros" in Barranco). Also reading "Tristitia" in that bridge gives me chills. and in that church you'll see some of the bullets that killed the romantic "slaves" that were putting their eyes on aristocrats girls from the Colonization time. I'm sorry but I'm in love with my country. Wish to be there to give you a good guide but I'm very busy with motherhood and away from home. If you like to know about something. Let me know. I'll be glad to help you. Hope you have the best time in Lima and hopefully you can visit other parts of Peru. Love and best wishes!!.
pd. Sorry for my terrible English.

Samuel & Audrey My pleasure guys. Anytime. Please don't be shy. There are many places to go. Also try the "Circuito de Playas", That will take around all the beaches in Lima but also the most popular neighborhoods and all of them are beautiful. From Magdalena del Mar (The old one), passing for Barranco ( I forgot to tell you that there's also the gallery of Mario Testino one of the best photographers in the whole world; and you can finish the ride in Chorrillos with "The real Felipe". If you feel like you are trapped". Grab the yellow pages and look for "taxi Seguro", addresses and tels #'s you might need. Don't bring papers to walk in the neighbours just copies will be fine. Except from the Center of Lima because is a Historical City. All the taxis that are yellow are the ones for the government (they have the #'s in the side and in the back). Also the # of your Embassy in Lima. Look for "brisas del Titicaca", you can meet locals and also another Turists in there. In center of Lima you'll be find. Just don't wear bling" haha. Wear something that be comfortable and have lots of pockets. The "Jordano" and The church crossing the streets is called "Iglesia San Francisco". Both are not far from the Center (Don't go too far from the "Plaza de Armas" or you'll get lost. In case you want to know something. Go inside a museum (are many and the guides inside speaking in different languages). Barranco is more vivid for the sunset. So try to go away from the center before lunch time. The Pdte. usually leaves the palace by that time and with him, all the police. Magdalena use to be a French colony but most of them were nuns that's why you'll see a big Virgen Mary, that statue and the Cathedral are things you can see run away. Don't go further, go back to the taxi and continue. That's why I said to call "Taxi Seguro" or having someone that you trust to ride you because you might like to do many "short stops". Another Cheap but Yummy traditional breakfast is "Tamal" or "Cafe con Leche" with his "French bread". Try to hold so you eat in the Jordano and there You can enjoy the rest of the day in the museums or some "Alfajores" or "papa rellena" ( those are cheap things you can eat and will fill you). Have a Nice day!. Lots of Love to you.

THAT IS NOT TURRON NOR TORREJA. The first is called "tripitas" and the other is ""cachanga", turrón is totally diferent, please investigate better before saying something. Also 3 soles is to much for them I would pay 1 sol for each one xD

      @marcopolo3001 9 років тому

Advi E Totally agree, I was trying to figure out what was going on there. Turron de doña pepa, is unmistakable, its always a big slab with miel de chancaca oozing through it, a real visual feast. I thought they got some modified street version, because the real turron is peppered with candies and hundreds and thousands. I did identify the cachanga, and was wondering isn't torreja savory and with totally different consistency?
Anyways good eye there on spotting the tripitas and cachanga.
