“A Teacher” explores the complexities and consequences of a predatory relationship between a young teacher and her student. Beautiful and quietly enigmatic, Claire is the newest teacher at Westerbrook High School in Texas. Dissatisfied in her marriage to her college sweetheart, Claire’s life changes when Eric, a charming all-American senior in her English class, asks for help preparing for his SAT test. Popular and outgoing, Eric is the captain of the soccer team and nearly inseparable from his best friends. Everything seems perfect on the surface, but Eric is forced to juggle the pressures of school, applying for college and a part-time job, all while helping take care of his two younger brothers. As Claire and Eric begin to spend more time together, boundaries are crossed, and a subtle game of grooming begins. The permanent damage left in the wake of Claire’s choices becomes impossible for them, and their friends and family, to ignore.

Omg yes lol I’ve developed a crush on that sweet charming smile he does ugh! And his Lowkey dominance side that comes out later on just fuels it more lol
The way he followed after her made me so uncomfortable, reminding you of their power imbalance. It makes him look small and vulnerable, completely under her control. And that smirk on her face... she knows her power over him
Exactly. It's sick. She likes the power..
No need to feel bad for the kid, he’s living the ultimate teenage boy fantasy lol
@@frankdelprado2756 right?!?!.. Every dude had this fantasy as a teen. Which is why it's pretty difficult for most guys to feel like somehow, in this instance, that he was somehow traumatized... ???

every relationship has a power imbalance ! im sure you want to get married one day. your a woman so you are hypergamous you want to married an educated man with money and if he makes power money than you then he has more power than you! a power imbalance. if you are straight. most people are straight which is why we are all here today
The fact that we as an audience get caught up in the romance and forget the context goes to show how dangerous this can be.
So many red flags flying watching the series. Yet I can’t look away.
It’s like watching a train wreck. It’s horrifying but you can’t look away.
It's so sad.
A review I saw commented on how cars continued to be very symbolic in this series. Because Eric never had his own car, he was always getting rides from others. And her having her own car and driving him places is another aspect of their power dynamic
Yes sadly I thought that too.
Mehh so many people don't have cars in Europe.
@@Persei1 Europe has more public transit. America hardly has anything outside of really big cities. And this is set in Texas so if you don't have a car, you are walking for hours on the side of the road to get anywhere. It's just not possible.
My SO is from Europe. They often remark on how little people from Europe understand the size and space here. You truly can't appreciate just how fucked you are without a car until you are there.

Even if we had a better railway in all 48 continental states it still wouldn't make a big difference if you live in a rural or suburban area. It's hard to grasp the scale of the land mass here until you visit. Just mess around with Google maps in a place like Montana, Texas, etc.
Even in a suburban town, walking from your house to school would be miles along the highway with no sidewalks mostly.

Everyone keeps talking about Nick Robinson but at least give Kate Mara the credit for playing the character that made us uncomfortable
Right! She made me dislike Claire the moment she stole cheap lip stick from a grocery store! The way she dolled her self up for tutoring. Taking a student alone to a college campus. All of this were red flags 🚩 I just kept screaming at the TV Kate Stop what are you doing ! 🤣
She didn't make me uncomfortable.
This was a challenge for Mara. She stated it was hard for her to watch her own performance because she is a mother in real life.

Yeah I was hoping he would not fold and give in but that just how it is
Really loving this show. The writers have done a great job at depicting all of the dumb stuff teenage boys think about daily. A lot of the conversations Eric and his friends have during the show remind me a lot of myself and my friend back in high school. I'm also surprised that the show is also tackling relationships between seniors and freshmen, as that is also a sort of taboo in the microcosm of high-school-society.

This scene made me feel uncomfortable. I really like this show and I'm glad they chose the female teacher / male student aspect. A lot of times this dynamic isn't considered as "bad," but she's clearly the adult. Students should trust and be able to confide in their teachers, not be seduced.
They should have made him 14 instead of 17. You always hear on the news the student was usually 14. They romanticized the hell out of it and gave him the mentality of a man. He's more of a man then most men I know sadly.
@@robinross5102 you’re not wrong but he also has loads of the child-like innocence and naivety we all had when we were young.
@@metzieee I'm completely in agreement with that.

It's about life experience which comes with age, but not always.
Life is complex and not black & white
This has certainly happened to 17 year olds, and it's nice to have something that illustrates how harmful the dynamic is even when the kid isn't quite as young.
She manipulates the situation so that it seems he is "chasing" her, but he is just following her lead. Very disturbing.
She could have led me in any direction she wanted . Unlike this wimp i would have had no problem at all

I just finished the series and I keep coming back to this scene. Not only is it beautifully filmed, but It's one of the, if not THE MOST, pivotal scenes in the series.
When they lock eyes with "Climax" playing in the background it almost takes on a dream like quality. And it's very affecting because I think as humans we've all had an experience like this. When they lock eyes, whether you look at it from Claire or Eric's POV, it's the moment where you're faced with a temptation almost too much to bare. Will you give in and and go down that road from which there is no return?
This is the moment where all lines are finally crossed and temptation leads the lamb to what will eventually become a slaughter.
I totally agree with you so much on this.
I havent watched this yet and I’m dying to watch it. I would also always go back to this scene from the videos I’ve seen😂

I really hate that people try to minimize the sexual exploitation of young boys and young men but what I hate worse is the slap on the wrist that women get for a crime that would send a man to prison for a very long time and/or the “atta boy” attitude of people who don’t get that these are victims.
This show isn't minimizing it. At all. If you watch ALL the episodes they clearly show that their relationship pretty much ruined his life. He is a victim.
@@trawlins396 exactly, the last thing he says in ep 9 makes it clear that he realized how much trauma their relationship has him and wants he wants to recover

It’s sad because I was a hs senior in 2014 when this show was taking place. Like I couldn’t imagine a teacher coming into me they she did to him in subtle ways 💆🏻♀️
Eric is absolutely adorable
He is so adorable, I can't take it!
This show did a great job at depicting the boundaries that predators often cross and how much trauma they inflict on their own victims for their own pleasure. Claire knew that Eric had a crush on her and she took advantage of that by grooming and manipulating him every chance she got. She had a hidden agenda all along.
Did he not start it by kissing her . Was he not a bit dumb for not realise once the affair started he held held all the cards as all he had to do to get what he wanted was threaten to expose what was going on as he would have nothing to lose . Students are always seen as the victim. If she was single i would have probably succumbed to her advances if she was single at that age but would have the savvy not to as she is married as the last thing i would want is some irate husband on my tale .
Since the first episode she was a conflicted character. That’s what I love about this show is you see two toxic characters with imperfect lives. She starts off the show with stealing even though she clearly has money . She likes the adrenaline of being sneaky. She has sexual dreams of Eric after their second meeting which means she was already attractive to him. She had a stuck marriage with the whole baby thing and her husband and her kinda lived separate lives. They had zero chemistry and were a boring couple who became roommates and so she utilized Eric as her scapegoat to get away from her failing marriage. Eric on the other hand was not an average teenager boy. He worked to help his mom and looked after his brothers. He didn’t have a car and he knew what he wanted for his future but didn’t have the confidence to do it. He wanted a normal life so bad like his friends and him going after a teacher was also adrenaline for him. Seeing them years later is what really gets you is that both suffered from their toxic behavior. Where as Claire tries to play the victim card had to go to jail can’t work and has become a house wife and Eric is traumatized by her he can’t even socially function with another woman! It’s a really sad ending actually :(
@@johnbarlow4572 You missed the whole point of my comment.
It does seem disturbing how people even try to blame Eric, he was still a kid and Claire was the adult who should’ve been more strict on maintaining boundaries and being very clear on how inappropriate it is to have a very intimate relationship with her.
Even before that kiss, you can notice how she was subtly giving him mixed signals that would tempt him into being more drawn to her (including this scene).
LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
Nick and kate were freakin awesome on this that it is very uncomfortable for us viewers but also very satisfying in their portrayal. So twisted, so wrong but perfectly executed. Great actors!
I feel like you need to watch this show a number of times to pick up all the small details. Like just the fact he's wearing trainers and not dress shoes with his suit shows his innocence. Could also be he's meant to not be wealthy. But either way there is a power imbalance just in that one symbol.
Right! I definitely think it still signifies a power imbalance and how a lot of times predators will prey on people of a lower socioeconomic status. He wears those shoes in most scenes because he can’t afford more, and he’s not at the place in his life where he can find a job like her. He hasn’t gone through the stages of life that she has.
Good show. Better than the movie.
The movie is very bland and just dry

Oh man this scene is so powerful, with the music and all, I can't determine inside who is hypnotizing who, though in the car the power dynamic is definitely in her favour- get in the back seat!
My part!!! watch this scene every other day
I think she is smiling/smirking because she knows that she will finally get what she wants, because in the first episode she has a dream about him so if you look at it they both wanted this.
I don't know why I find it hilarious that they play Usher climax here, but it's perfect for this seen; because the teachers has finally broke so to speak.
She's no longer trying to maintain her self-control, At this point she's just giving in to her animalistic urges, she's throwing all morality, and intellect out the window; in just letting herself be driven by pure sensuality, and carnality; she's reached her climax so to speak.
I was just feeling the Usher song 🥰
It’s a great song.
Goddammit, lady, if you want an affair go to a bar or something.
Nick saying “i feel like I can’t control myself around you” 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠
Love this scene ❤️
one of my fave scenes, just the buildup and growing desire and sexual tension in this scene too
Clarie is the one who needed to be the responsible adult and not tempt Eric. She should've stopped tutoring Eric after that kiss, and set very strict boundaries. I think Eric even realized he shouldn't be having an inappropriate relationship with her for their own good, but Claire kept giving him those mixed messages and was seducing them to keep it going!
Eric was trying to control his crush he had on his teacher, cause he didn't want either of them in trouble. But Claire couldn't resist the thrill of it, as it added excitement to her life she viewed as "boring".
Good show

Nice
Bro I see you on almost every video! Shoutout to you! :D
As much as I personally am really repulsed by the idea of being with a guy this young or younger than me by more than a couple of years, and even if I was I would never act on it knowing I could hurt someone the way she did, but I honestly do feel for her. She obviously wasn't able to make the distinction between him and a man who was more mature and aware, and sometimes attraction is extremely intoxicating and confusing. I personally see 17 year olds as looking like children, but I know that some don't and some people could be potentially confused by that in some rare situations. I think sometimes chemistry between two people can really psychologically destroy lives. I haven't experienced this kind myself, and I'm glad I haven't, but I feel like calling people who struggle with this disgusting isn't entirely fair. All human beings make huge mistakes. It's incredibly sad that people like him get hurt. She hurt him psychologically but it doesn't seem to me like she was aware of that, even if she was in denial. I had intense feelings for a teacher when I was in high school, and I personally feel like I was as aware when I was 17 of a lot of depth, and this man was only 9 years older than me. To me the show portrayed the guy as slightly more innocent than he was. There are kids his age in juvenile prison for doing really terrible things. I honestly think this kid crosses boundaries in the way he speaks to her too, and I don't think he's completely innocent, the same way I don't think 16 year old guys who rape their classmates are innocent. She clearly had more responsibility than he did and in no way am I arguing that, but I think these things are complicated.
I never ALLOWED MYSELF TO FEEL THIS WAY. AS A WOMEN I UNDERSTAND THAT.
Finished watching this today, she was so selfish 😭😭
This and the scene after are still one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen.
At least she won't be thrown the rail tracks by this guy, unlike Frank Underwood.
Wow!
as someone who has been with a teacher back in the day this was very triggering for me
Does she have on a little blue dress? Holy crap, you got to be kidding me.
The way she her eyes to tell him to follow her was really like saying she has him on a leash.
Mans is living the dream
This happened to me. Wherein, you are in a black hole slowly that you can’t notice because you kept basically doing it. Trap in a box
Who else wishes they ended up together
The husband in this show is in fear street !
They shouldn’t have made him 18 because it seemed so inconsistent one minute it’s romantic the next hes getting “groomed”
That’s exactly what they wanted people to go through while watching - the balance between this being consensual and this being a power play. Ultimately, I think the teacher/student dynamic makes him come off younger than he actually is. If they met at the grocery store in the neighborhood, this would almost be a non-issue.
The novel “Tampa” by Alissa Nutting is this story told through the POV of a female educator who teaches a much younger class of students - there you will find a truly disturbing story lol
And everyone is saying that it’s completely Claire’s fault for grooming him from the beginning(agreeing to tutor him, taking him to UT, saying he should call her Claire instead of Ms. Wilson when they’re outside of school). I can see why the people are saying that but when he spoke to her in private saying that he can’t stop thinking about her and that he has dreams about her, that look she gave to the side I think is her also remembering the dream she had of him. So I personally think that him saying that to her, means that she now knows that he wants her and that she also wants him because of the dream, thats why she took him away. He could’ve stayed at the dance, but he didn’t, so both of them are kind of “at fault” here.
I like this type of series and movies so I am all caught up in the romance and when I watch it I look at it as a romance, but in my subconsciousness I look at it in a manipulative way because I don’t want the manipulating to ruin the romantic part . Say what you wanna say, I won’t judge but I looked at it in a romantic way and I liked this so much because of what was happening and how it happened🤷🏻♀️

See how he tries to separate himself, an extremely mature decision for a 17 year old, after she gets angry at him, and then SHE pulls him to the car. Then tries to claim the opposite happened, like she was a horrible, evil bystander who should have rejected him. When SHE brought it there, all of the insane parts except starting a non-sexual kiss was started by her.

I know I’m 7 months behind on this but I completely agree! I kept thinking that it was more him grooming her! Every time he was with her he was all up in her space and just forcing himself on her.
