Cash Transfer Grants in South Africa during the COVID-19 Pandemic Beneficiaries Interviews

  • In April 2020, one in five South Africans were going to bed hungry. With a hard COVID-19 lockdown in place and millions put out of work, the government was only managing to deliver food parcels to a small amount of those in need.
    Based on evidence from previous research in Kenya, the CSAE research team, lead by Kate Orkin, worked closely with research colleagues in South Africa and with civil servants to influence the South African government to instead give direct cash handouts: large enough sums to support families for months.
