The reason why you get tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is because of small tears that happen in the tendon as it inserts into this bone. They’re very hard to heal. In fact, they have very poor cell growth, so it’s really difficult to try and make tennis elbow better, and the sooner you get onto it, the better it’s going to heal.
What we’re going to do to help protect it for the first couple of weeks is we’re going to put you into a wrist splint. We might get you to wear it at work, and we’ll definitely get you to wear it at night. What this does is this actually rests the ECRB tendon. So by keeping your wrist immobilised, then effectively we’re resting this tendon.
Following a period of immobilisation, it’s really important with lateral epicondylitis that we start to regain your strength. We’ll start strengthening you again using isometric exercises, concentric and e-centric strengthening exercises. An isometric contraction means that you need to make a fist with your hand, and then we’re going to apply pressure at this distal end, but the wrist is not going to move. What that does is that helps to strengthen these muscles, but it strengthens them with protection.
