    I feel so much for this guy. I hope he was able to sell his car. I was 42 when all I had was 20k in retirement savings. Prior to age 42, I was generating a very paltry income, and had no idea how to get myself out. Today I’m 50, and have almost $200k saved, bought a modest home, rent out the back bedrooms, have zero credit card or car debt, and have substantial emergency fund. It’s nowhere near where I could have been had I made better decisions when I was in my 20’s, but I’m better off now than I was when I was 42. What I’m saying is, it can be done. Even in your early 40’s, it can be done. If you’re in your 20’s now, don’t waste your money on eating out and lattes. Save it, invest it, and then retire by age 55. After that, you’ll have the money to live high on the hog. Don’t wait.

    • @TVHouseHistorian
      @TVHouseHistorian 4 місяці тому

      @@andrewstorm8240 Well, it was definitely not for much intentional doing on my own part. I had been unwisely saving for retirement since my early 20's through other companies I'd been with. After graduating college at 37, I knew I didn't have a lot of time left to make things happen the way I want. So, after stumbling around through several dead-end jobs, I finally stumbled into the one I knew I wanted to stick with which offered a good living, as well as a fairly robust retirement package. It was at the moment I signed the paper electing how much I wanted to contribute that it hit me that I needed to be as aggressive with my retirement savings as possible. Sorry for the the long answer. In short, it was a combination of a long-standing awareness, and stumbling into what would turn out to be THE career I wanted to stick with, which happens to provide a relatively substantial living. Wish I'd have come to this place 20 years prior. I'd be a lot more ahead of the game, and right where I need to be.

I'm not sure if he is lacking info regarding monthly VA compensation or he is simplu stubborn. Feel free to reach out if any veterans need guidance! (F.y.i. VA has different levels of compensation..u can google exact ammounts..if u get 100% VA disabily rating that is about $4k monthly)

      It isn’t clear if he was in the military. He said he worked for DoD doing R&D. Then he mentioned military. As a veteran myself, I would have started by saying “after high school, I joined the military, got hurt, etc.” Just makes me wonder if he was actually in the military or just doing contract work or maybe fed work. Wasn’t clear.

    Such a sad event to happen to such a young person! I commend him for getting help and for getting back to work, and I certainly understand how he wants to have some nicer things like a newer car, and the newer phone, because he hasn't been able to buy those things for most of his adult life. He should think about changing his W-2 so that he is no longer getting a tax refund, because that is basically just loaning your money to the government for a year. If he's getting $2,000 back and in a refund he could have that staying in his paycheck every month! I would also suggest trying CBD oil instead of using the dispensary and see if that would be less expensive and still help his pain. Hyundai cars are actually very reliable! I have one that's 20 years old and is still running very well. I can see that he's been through so much and it's really hard to think about making big changes, but I'm rooting for him and I think that he will do very well even with one of these changes that you're suggesting Romain. And also sounds like he has a wonderful supportive family who have helped him through his injury, and apparently to buy his car from him so he could get out of his debt 😊

    I think he was just civilian working for the military and not a military veteran. Because if he was a disabled vet, he would get VA Disability payment for life. And every year he can fight to get it increased until he reaches 100% disabled. Also, he should’ve applied for SSDI if he was hurt so badly.

    I would normally be more difficult on him considering his age. But I would rather be empathetic since it seems like that accident had destroyed his life in so many ways. And I generally root for him because he seems like a good guy who went through a traumatic situation. And I do hope he seriously heeds Romain’s advice. He’s only 40 yrs old and I understand Romain was only trying to emphasize his age because he was concerned. But there are 60 and 70 yr olds in the same boat as him which is a completely different narrative than for a 40 yr old. He still has plenty of time to retire comfortably but he has to make drastic changes.
