As a professional detailer...Caleb had perfect advice. Go get a detailing job at a shop, you'll make close to 40K a year starting. Use that to better your situation and learn what it takes (or if you want) to run a business and how. What you see on YT isn't reality for most, unfortunately.
If your bosses let you, you detail in their shop on the side. And do some OT.. you can make 2500/wk or more
This guy is what I imagine most rise and grind influencers real life actually looks like behind closed doors.
I used what I learned on youtube to start a window cleaning business like 6 years ago, I was wayyy over my head, was too scared to do houses with 2 stories, it took me longer then it should, and I just didn't have must knowledge. That business lasted a couple months lol it would have been way better if I worked under someone to get a grasp of the business first and I imagine for most people that's going to be the best option.
I've never been in the business but have been a customer a couple times. But it doesn't really compute to me. He should be doing two cars and making $500 pre tax profit a day. He must not be charging correctly. Probably missing up-charges like pet hair, toddler food, or doing a free paint correction. If I understand correctly $300 usually just gets you a wash, clay bar, polish the clay bar marks, and wax and interior cleaning but no actual paint correction or stain removal. Paint correction that runs like close to $700

This situation is just so sad. You know this guy has spent thousands of dollars listening to "financial experts" tell him how to "hustle and grind." And he's proof it doesn't work. He has a self-reliant mindset, but you can't be self-reliant while being subsidized by both the government and your girlfriend.
Self-reliance is a myth. Nobody is ever completely reliant on themselves.
I think he took to heart the myth of "good debt". He likely thought he was going to pay this stuff and build his credit rating.

Sure, but there is a lot you could do to be 80-90% self reliant.
Government also makes it impossible to be 100%.
Whenever you have a business idea, you should lay out what the perfect situation would be, but it still needs to be realistic.
So in 5 years, if this guy has a full schedule doing mobile work, charging $100 an hour, 6 hours a day, he's got at least $30 an hour in overhead. Then on top of that he's got to put in the time for advertising and bookkeeping and maintenance of his tools and materials.
In a perfect situation, this giu os working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week to make $60k a year.
Unless he has some delusion that he's going to be detailing 5 supercars a day for $1000 a pop.
@KS0102 that's not true, since 16 I've been on my own. Parents disowned me when I came out as gay. Worked full time, schoole part time, another part time job on the side, slept in my car for a lot of it, motels, I guess the most help I had was my boss letting me sleep on his couch a few times. No government assistance through any of it. Completely self-reliant.
I’m gonna go out on a limb. Selling the house isn’t an option because his girlfriend is actually paying more than just the utilities and has threatened to leave him if he sells as she now has money in it. He also didn’t seem entirely sure that she knew how much credit card debt he had. Dude has been lying to his girlfriend for the last year.
They were together for 6 years, so if she was living with him for 2+ years she’s probably entitled to do a common law devorce and he’ll be in debt to her.
@@onemanturret1641 I am not very knowledgeable on this, but that would be a hard battle for her to win, especially if she actually doesnt help pay his mortgage like he said in the video. Common Law Marriage isnt recognized in most states (from my 2 second google search)

UA-cam has convinced people they can make a living off of car detailing, pressure washing, and laundromat ownership.
Well, they can. One of my best friends owns and runs a pressure washing business. His dad owned it before him. It supported the family and his dad was able to buy a house and raise the kids and then pass the business down to the son. The son has been doing well with it for the past decade. He works as much as he wants, with a waiting list, and has to turn away work.
And for car detailing, there's a dude who came up to my work. The ladies there would pay him to take their cars and detail them while they worked. That dude made bank. He damn sure made more than I did during the same time.
@@giantpuneThis tactic only works if you have something to lay back on. Someone who tries car detailing or any business as a full time job from the get go will not have funds to continue unless they make strategic decisions with their savings which this guy hasn't . I know from experience .

You could make a living doing this, if you work for a car detailer, a pressure washing service, or actually own a laundromat. But none of those are businesses you can just startup and run. It's like how social media makes everyone think they can day trade.

The Delta Defense thing is one of the wildest scams I've ever heard of. Who in their right mind is going to pay $42 a month for the possibility that they might be involved in a self-defense altercation? I would love to hear the pitch that someone gave him to buy that.

USCCA is a pro-gun concealed carry organization. So really, that "coverage" is for people who *want* to be involved in a situation where they can use their gun and claim "self defense".
I looked into it a bit more and it's apparently through the US Concealed Carry Association, so essentially liability insurance if you have a concealed carry permit. It makes more sense in that context than just "insurance in case you're involved in a self-defense altercation" as he explained it.
He can't sell the house because his girlfriend pays his bills. If he sells that house she leaves, and he will be homeless.
This could be a true test of their relationship. If she leaves him through this rough time, then they weren’t meant to be together.

The math he did was "I can make $700 a day detailing 2 cars a day! Instant $$$" without taking into consideration every expense from travel, to materials, to time, and without taking into consideration that he needs to get the clients first.
I've known people that did detailing, and they all started out as side gig/weekend jobs. And only finally when it became too busy they left their main jobs

@@vanguard6937that’s how most side hustles start and end successfully. You end up having to make a choice hourly you make vs clients you’ll lose. Only then does it make sense to quit your job. Until you’re at that point you work a 9 to 5 and hustle on the side.
Truly. Even if you don't plan to take out a loan or have people invest in the business to raise capital, you should at least put together a business plan to get a clear idea of what you're getting into and to help guide your work. Most people just buy into the "be your own boss and make lots of $$$" rhetoric without considering any of the realities associated with starting and growing a business. Most businesses fail within the first five years for a reason.
I can’t believe that Caleb just sat in front of someone with less than 50 CENTS to their name. This might be the most dire scenario I have seen, and I think he will be forced to sell the house whether he likes it or not at this point. He should do it while it’s his choice to make, rather than the bank.
By the way, if you run a business and you are on FOOD STAMPS, having tax payers pay for your groceries, you certainly have no business as a “business coach”

This is a good example why most people should work a normal job. At the surface he is a "business owner" and "home owner," but he making less than the minimum wage for the amount of hours he is working.

Well and you can work a normal job WHILE you build a business. Or while you prepare financially to start a business. Work in the industry first, get some experience, save up some cash, then start small as a side hustle, if that works well expand until you can make the leap to full time. Trying to go from 0 to 100 immediately is a recipe for disaster.

He said he had 3 detailing jobs TOTAL in January / February ! That is basically 8 weeks of doing nothing. Being a detailer tails off in the winter months. He needs a full time job to kill his rising debt at age 29. Learn a trade like a carpenter / plumber / cook / electrician .... things that will be there in the future. Car detailing is so unreliable for income. I've never had to have my cars detailed because I do them myself.
@ag4allgood it definitely slows down in the winter! I detailed while in college, and it worked well because I would make enough money in spring and early summer that I didn't have to work the other half of the year.

Im a hairstylist. A lot of people ask me if I want to open my own salon. My answer is always no, bc I dont want to deal with the business side of things. But after seeing so many "entrepreneurs" on Calebs show who dont even know simple things like their overhead/ net profit, I have a feeling it's not as hard as it looks. Ppl just make it look hard bc they have no idea what they're doing.

People see all the influencers and the lifestyle it can bring but don’t realize the years of dedication and self development it actually takes. Most small business owners would be better off getting a regular job if they truly looked at their numbers compared to the hours they work.
It's not "difficult" per se. Costs can be worked out with 3rd grade math. It's the extra hours spent on administration that will be challenging. But you can do it.
As an 18 year old watching all these people go through these different situations has really opened my eyes to learning how important it is to learn how to manage your finances early im so thank full for finding this channel

@@wallaceluna6241 Don't let the bad Credit Card habit start ! I think a debit card for young people helps to control the spending. Emergency fund is an under rated tool to have. That is when people get into BAD Debt trouble - No Emergency Fund.

Nah for real dog I started me job last year and found Caleb recently even though I'm only a teenager and have a decent chunk of money put away as is I still feel guilty for spending on random stuff over the year. This has helped me put a solid budget into place to make sure I know where my money is going.

She may not get the final say but she atleast gets a say because he would be fucked without her, because there's no way hes affording that mortgage without her paying the utilities (bro can barely afford it as is). As someone who has been in online business for 5 years and spent way too much money in “biz coaching” I’ll say any GOOD business coach will tell you to get a Job, at least part time, to create stability you need mentally to grow your business ❤

CPA working on several clients' books here - the number of people willing to spend multiple thousands of dollars (usually in debt) on what they hope is a miracle cure for their business is astounding.
There are good coaches, but most I've encountered are criminal with what they actually provide vs. what they charge.

In my experience, mobile detailing has always seemed like “oh I’ll start this business with no experience and it’ll be so easy” jobs. I know a couple people who were druggies or who couldn’t hold a good job who thought that mobile detailing was their path to success.

This. So many UA-camrs sell the dream that you don’t need school, you’ll make more doing your own schedule instead of working for the man. Meanwhile this guy is on food stamps. I’m also all for following dreams and trying to start your own thing. But make sure you’re financially secure first. Even if it means sticking to your 9-5 for a couple more years to fund your growing business. It won’t be easy, but it’s not supposed to be, no matter what these tubers say.
If i was the girlfriend who was basically paying for this dudes entire everything and he sold the only financially valuable thing to his name against my wishes I would leave him to figure his stuff out without me.

Bad advice.. no to selling the house. Renting is minimum $1400-1600 right now. He should take a regular 9-5 job, work detailing over sat and sun. Pay the debt now and build business over time. Detailing is a seasonal business, strong in the summer but meh in the winter. He can stand out by driving to houses to do it, do special detailing like for puke and mud etc or have mini detail session for football mums for $100-150. Either go volume or quality of detail.
This is a perfect example of letting something go if it doesn’t make money. Working for yourself doesn’t always translate to profitable. So many small business owners are losing money every year with hopes of hitting it big one day. If it doesn’t make money move on.
Also, take it from me: as a small business owner for 15 years; I hung onto the business way longer than I should’ve, and it did start becoming a financial obligation at the end (it turns out, I wasn’t a very good businessman; such is life)… Cut your losses now, sell the house, pay off all the debts and start a new life. And get a 9 to 5.
Same as a small biz manager .hung on way too long and lied to myself..kept thinking we will pull thru. The day we closed I felt such a relief!!! Should have left years ago having no financial ties..but thought I could save it

This is a man who watched a bunch of UA-cam videos about being your own boss. He thought he could just start a business with no savings, connections and experience and that it would just work out for him. He seems like a hard worker so hopefully he learns the hard skills necessary to run a business OR just go back to work a normal job
Being self reliant does NOT mean rely of the government for food stamps or your partner to pay the bills. You have the skills to be a bartender and make plenty of money to pay off this debt while building a business. Never take out debt again, build your business by knowing your numbers and knowing when the right time is to go out on your own. I’ve been self-employed for 16 years. It’s the absolute best, but I had to work a second job for the first couple years to make sure I could cover the bills so I didn’t go into debt. Also, it’s much more rewarding to create a business based on something you truly love and are able to create value for others with. Best of luck.
This seems to be a common problem i come across a lot in the trades. People see videos online of how great it is to run their own business but they haven't actually taken the time to master the trade that they plan to work in.
Running a business is a skill in itself.
I hate to say it, but call his gf what she is. She's his mom. Like if you OWN a detailing businesses, or any business where you're essentially servicing cars, if you're not even working like 10 hours a day at least, you just will not even be able to give yourself a good paycheck let alone hire other employees, take on better tools and skills, keep food on the table when that's all you do apparently, you can't just rely on your girlfriend for everything. NO ONE deserves to have to take care of a fully grown man that's not even related to you in anyway other than he's dependent and romantically involved with you.

Books like the 4 hour work week tried to tell my gen that grinding was bad and you can just work a little. And this guy and many others fell for it. Most of the time the 9-5 is better off.

The numbers don't add up, he's detailing 30 hours a week, he's in the upper price range, and he only earns $15,000 in 9 months.
For the record, detailing is 80-90% labor, because cleaning products don't cost a fortune.

I don't think that he's pulling in the volume of jobs he's saying that he is. If he's in the "mid-high range" and is still relatively new with no real foundation around reviews/clientele, he may be pricing himself out of jobs...
I think he said he had only 2 cars in a month earlier this year or something. Basically he had a good month cause it was car cleaning month and thinks that's the new normal, he's going to be hurting in a few months when people are cold and don't care about clean cars as much.

I LOVE the small business audits. I have a few friends who are small business owners, ranging from being in business 5 years-30+ years. The biggest takeaways I hear from all of them is how costly it is and you don't see profit right away. So much time and money goes into building it. Owning a business isn't for everyone and audits like this are great for individuals who may want to start on. I really hope this guy is successful.

@Anna-qz6xw, no you just lucked out, there is a reason that over 90% of new businesses fail and that's because it is common knowledge that you typically won't see any real profit for at least the first 2 years. Most people can't float the business for that time period and end up shutting down or they don't manage the finances correctly and realize that every penny that comes in isn't theirs and actually has to go back out in some form or another.

If your business survives 5 years, and you show a livable profit, you are generally in the clear, but yeah most fail in 5 years.
Agreed. I own a detailing business myself . I started in 2010 barely scraping by so had to maintain a full time job. Took me 7 years to become full time. This year I’ll make roughly $375,000 after expenses. I own a shop. The key is offering multiple services ( tint, PPF) it’s easier to reach 5 figures a month by doing that.

I'm glad we as a society have programs like food stamps and Medicaid, but it's frustrating to see someone say "My main goal in life is to be self reliant" without remotely acknowledging how far away from that he is today.

I am in Albuquerque, my guy. We pay $80 per detail with a mobile guy. I think you're in the wrong city for $350. Our guy has to be booked out about 2 weeks in advance he just bought a Ram van cash he's doing good good. I think you're going after the wrong customers with the wrong advice from you tubers saying, "If they can't afford you, you don't want them as customers"
Sounds like this guy didn't start with the best plan. When you start on your own, don't schedule a single job for everyday, choose a few days a week and book jobs only for those days. On the days you don't schedule jobs work a part time job, preferably in the field you're trying to break in to. Once you finally hit 100% booking on your business days you slowly expand, work less at your part time job and add another day to schedule for your own business.
I think I've figured out why I like watching Caleb's videos so much, it's because it makes me feel better about my own situation. It's like watching Hoarders to make me feel good about how clean my house is.
Then shit happens and you find your situation is almost as bad...or maybe worse.

I did a similar thing! I started a business at 17yo without any experience and it crashed and burned after 2 years... But then I worked for a few more jobs and went to school, grew up and started another one at 23 which after 3 years is growing and going strong! He needs some life experience first! Watch other businesses build connections!

You don't start a business as a beginner. You get experience, contacts, create a budget, figure out the demand and the market first, and then try it. In their excitement to work for themselves, a lot of people skip the first steps to successfully and sustainably work for themselves.
I think this is one of the very few times I've disagreed with something Caleb has said. I understand that selling the house is the easiest way to start snowballing the debts, but saying the girlfriend has no say in it, despite her paying for everything but the internet, seems a bit unfair imo

What is fair is selling the house so that he isnt drowning in debt anymore. One of the many reasons she is paying for everything is because he has a house he cant afford and it would be unfair for him to keep the house just because his GF wants to keep it. He already said he would like to sell it. His GF can give her input, but he has the final say despite whatever she may think.
If the debt is only in his name, then it's his decision alone. Until they get married at least
she is paying for utilities..... he is paying mortgage.... that does not buy her a say in if he keeps his house.

I just started watching your videos a week or so ago. I'm a self proclaimed not-credit-card-person and had been struggling for a while to keep the one card I use kept down (but it's not nearly as crazy as some of your guests), and your videos, and the advice you give your guests, helped me get my head on a swivel and start making real progress towards getting caught up, getting my car paid off, and getting my savings and emergency fund built back up. No more taquitos and BS spending I can't afford. Just yesterday, standing in the grocery store overlooking fancy expensive coffees, I could hear a little Caleb Hammer in my ear saying, "When you're in debt, you can drink Folgers."

The most frustrating part is that he says he has a dream to be self-reliant but at the end he said all he needed was your help in telling him what to do and when to do it. Deep down he really wants to just be told what to do and he’ll get it done. Sounds perfect for him to work for another company. He just had some shitty jobs that made him think all jobs in life suck.
I love how he says "I agree" immediately after defending himself and trying to ease the accountability. Just like me when I was 20 tbh. Always blaming everything else for why I couldn't cope with life, trying to make myself out to be a victim and came up with excuse after excuse for throwing away my life essentially in my early 20s when I had a great job, money saved, I had no debt, I didn't even believe in credit cards (and I still don't have one), I wish I would've had someone just tell me stuff like that at 20-21 because it fuckin sucks trying to rebuild in your mid 20s what should be part of the best years of your life, so the longer to wait, the harder and heavier it feels trying to get out of that. Plus the world really is a cold, but wonderful place if you know what I mean. People will always be kind but no one is going to be able to serve you happiness on a silver platter. If you want to be happy, you gotta work for it.

Becoming cautious about something that can plausibly happen doesn’t make you traumatized about anything. He’s been robbed twice and he handles a cash business that involves him traveling to random people’s houses, which definitely puts him a little extra vulnerable to being robbed again. I don’t know if this self defense insurance is the financially best way to deal with it and maybe it’s a little overly cautious, but we don’t need to pathologize everything.

My boyfriend owns a mobile detailing company that he turned into a physical detail shop in less than a year. I definitely don't want anyone to get discouraged! We planned and saved for over three months before starting his business (he also had over 4 years of experience already in the field). Additionally, I was making enough for him to take the risk but we planned how things would work out financially once he was able to take over the finances again. He now makes well over six figures.
Keyword here: PLANNING!! With an industry like this, you have to plan the brand down to creating imaginary days weeks and months of what this business is gonna look like and plan heavily around down season (winter). Also in a business like this you need to be willing to work solo for a long time before hiring a whole team and paying them and yourself a liveable wage on top of expenses, taxes, etc.

I like that these audits get posted 3 times a week because every time I watch one, it makes me look at my finances and it helps keep me in check. It's still a work in progress and I hope to someday go on the show, but the timing hasn't worked out for me.

I really have a hard time understanding how people have so much credit card debt, spending more than they are paying, having multiple credit cards, and they all have huge spending limits on them. How are they getting approved for such huge limits?
If you're making your minimum payments (and with shadier cards, maybe not even that) but keep bumping up against your credit limit, many banks will keep raising the limit on your cards. This is guaranteed money to them - at that point you're obviously a good source of revenue. From the bank's perspective, you're a good investment if you keep getting fees assessed, as long as you remain a customer in good standing. The person who keeps low balances and pays the card off regularly is worth less as a customer.
@@formerclarity8836There’s a bit more to credit card issuers than fees. Underwriting, and underwriting insurance, are huge liabilities that have taken down many unscrupulous banks. While fees are great, paying $5k in outstanding debt to only collect $1.5k per year in interest (assuming they don’t become insolvent in that time) is an easy way to get wiped out if that’s the entire model. That’s why the biggest credit card issuers tend to prefer high-value, low-risk customers: swipe fees are actually no risk when the account gets paid every month and the high annual fees make up for interest (Amex) or a lucrative reward scheme entices new high-value clients (Chase) or an ecosystem of financial products encourages clients to form lasting multi-product relationships with a bank (BofA).

Credit isn’t a measure of your finances it is a measure of your likelihood to borrow and pay back based of the data available to them. You can have 10 homes and 10 million in the banks and have bad credit from not using it. You can be deep in debt and have a decent credit rating still if you pay on time.
I've wondered the same, I see tons of people on here with huge credit limits only making $45k a year and yet I am just finally getting decent credit limit offers and I've been pulling in 6 figures for the last 5 years.
