If you look at it chronologically, all the experience they gathered during those almost 30 years together comes together in this album, is like, in my opinion perfect, they really are masters of the craft.
@@rjisasavage While that is cool, I always thought it's more notable that it begins with "stay" and ends with "don't leave" given that this album came out not long after Thom's divorce. Anyway I enjoyed this vid a lot, great job
i write orchestral score for film and tv, and play the violin, piano, and guitar all at a concert level. i wish more people could understand how difficult it is to create something like burn the witch, but even a person with a high level of musical talent would need a minimum of 10 years of music theory/instrumental/orchestration studies to be able to analyze it. so, im going to try to explain why this song is such a rare treat using plain english. The most unusual and masterful thing about it is that swirling, melting, perpetually shifting sound, and in a close second place is the sheer imagination of the textures and harmonies being so carefully sculpted for the exact dramatic effects they want, moment to moment. It requires a decent technical understanding of counterpoint, combined with a genius melodic sensibilty/imagination, plus an eclectic and extensive knowledge of different musical references to make that level of sonic imagery consistently work through the entirety of a pop song. its a tightrope act that requires perfect balance. Reminds me of debussy and shostakovich string quartets, with a bit of bartok mixed in for some extra kick. structurally, its completely unpredictable, yet always sounds inevitable. It's constantly generous and engaging, and there are no wasted moments...a masterpiece of carefully controlled, colorful, exhilarating chaos. Bjork tried to do this kind of avante garde pop too, and she made a great effort, but never really got it to work in my opinion. Definitely not like this. it reminds me of the indiana jones ride at disneyland. its designed to seem like everything is going off the rails (literally), but really its all completely under control and happening exactly as intended. Then there's the lyrics. All great composers used famous poetry for their libretto, but thom writes lyrics just as good as goerthe or schilling or Keats or whitman or any of those guys. Its really something else. Don't take radiohead for granted! It's crazy that this even exists.
Really is up there with their best this one. Main thing I take from this album...strings. Lots of lovely orchestration. And a reflective sadness on the passing of time, but also acceptance. It's quite a gentle album, but very subtle and emotionally very moving. Slow burner, really rewards repeated listening.
The history behind True Love Waits is wild... written decades ago, occasionally played on tour, never committed to an album until their ninth studio album, after Thom and his late wife separated amicably, with her dying of cancer soon after that. This final version of the song made me SOB the first time I heard it.
It may not be their best album, but it’s my favourite. It’s like all the good things from each previous album were used to compile a modern masterpiece.
