The booster pack did seem like the extra jolt of life the Mario Kart franchise needed if they werent going to make another for a while. Here's hoping that next MK game will be a launch title for the next Nintendo console.
Adding onto the Mario Kart formula was a pretty common practice with the last few entries (motion controls, gliding/underwater, zero gravity) but 8’s longevity has made some of these feel like series staples even if they’ve only shown up twice. I wouldn’t be surprised if the gap between 8 and 9 practically kills this habit of adding some new way to race.
I doubt we'll see zero gravity go away. It makes so many more track designs possible, since now you're not limited to a plain map. All of the features you mentioned enrich the game without limiting its design in any way, so I can't see them being removed in the future either. As for a new gimmick, it's almost guaranteed that we will see something. Zero gravity was pretty tame in terms of gameplay changes, and they need to bring in something new to make the next one make sense as a new entry. Otherwise, why would you want to play Mario Kart 9 when 8D has 96 courses? It's extremely unlikely that 9 will match that number, or even 8 classic's 48 (+DLC). Also, you should note that most of the Mario Kart additions have been retained, other than the odd items here and there. The only entry that felt far more experimental and hasn't translated to later entries is Double Dash, with the two drivers and special items mechanics.
@kellyrousseau3839never said that zero g was leaving! Just that it seems hard to imagine anything else getting added even though MK8 and the “new” zero g is a decade old

For $12.5 you're getting 24 tracks (mostly mobile) and 4 characters, which is not that great anymore compared to the initial DLC that had 8 original maps and 8 fully remade ones. Even the "original" 8 Deluxe DLC courses were still made for Tour, they just arrived on mobile later.
the "new" courses are also ported from Tour, they were in Tour's files long before the pass was even announced. plus theyre labelled new in tours files @monumentvalley6681
Man, MK8 on Wii U was like the best value. As you said, they had a deal where you get a second game for free. I got Windwaker and became a lifelong Zelda fan from then on. But also, if you bought it on the eshop rather than on disc, you also got Super Mario Kart for free. And then they added DLC where you had an extra half game worth of tracks for not that much. It was the biggest mario kart ever!. AND they added 200cc for free, and most importantly, the weird mercedes benz promotion.
Even though you covered so much here, I'd love to see a video on the main channel covering the Booster Course Pass. I think a lot of people would love to hear your thoughts on the DLC in-depth and what you though of each course. A video about Mario Kart Tour would be cool too, since the Booster Course Pass is all Tour designs.
I remember my friend and I talking about what cool items could be added for Mario kart 8. One of them was the polterpup from Luigis mansion replacing the boo item and another one was a Piranha plant similar to 3D world. Needless to say our excitement when we saw the Piranha plant announced was incredible!
I remember one of my friends made tons of spreadsheets for MK8 on the WiiU. Printed out, it took up a binder, full of all the possible cart combinations for optimal gameplay lol.
My only real gripe with 8 deluxe after all the dlc and updates is that you can't swap the two items in the slot like in double dash. You don't even use the Y button in a race so why not use it. Yeah it might be awkward to hit it during a race, but I still wish it was possible
10 years, boy time really goes by fast! My Mario kart 8 story: during the 3DS and the Wii U era I could have gotten Mario kart 8 myself on the Wii U but during that time I was a middle schooler and the only games I had were Disney Infinity 2.0, Super Smash Bros and Super Mario 3D Land and much more. Of course during that era I did try out the game myself and it was pretty good but I wasn't that completely interested in it, I could have gotten the game entirely or at any moment during that era but unfortunately there would be times I would have my Wii U privileges taken away when I was young. (But I still had my 3DS with me thankfully) Eventually I would get Mario kart 8 deluxe for the switch and after playing the game a whole lot more I've come to actually appreciate it a lot and It's basically the Super Smash Bros Ultimate of Mario kart from my point of view. Mario kart 8 deluxe is a phenomenal masterpiece!
I’ve only ever played the Wii U version of MK8, and it feels wild to me that the game I bought on its launch day that was originally released on a console nobody bought is now the 6th best selling game of all time

I think something that would greatly improve the feel of MK (literally) would be ramping up the intensity and feel of the rumble. I want to feel the texture of the terrain I'm driving on, the rumble of the engine, and THE SPEED. MK8/8D is a bit too *smooth* feeling.
Mario Kart 8...what a game. I followed it closely since its unveiling in 2013. After picking it up alongside a Wii U system in summer 2014, MK8 became one of my most treasured games. I like how you talked about the roster. Yeeeeah, back in 2014 the base game had a rocky selection of players. I _love_ the Koopalings, even geeking out from their trailer, but they took up a quarter of the selection. I speculate that they were given priority, seeing that their animations are lovely and they got new voice actors (except Roy). That also explains why Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach were thrown in as fodder, but I digress. Incidentally, nice shout-out to Koopa Kid at 15:14 . I would have absolutely loved seeing my favorite Mario character in Mario Kart 8. But seriously, this game was already a banger on Wii U; the two big DLC packs ensured lots of playtime from me. When it got ported to the Switch as 8 Deluxe, that was cool. Obviously, the big draw to Deluxe was the Battle Mode. I didn't outright despise it on Wii U, but 8 Deluxe's Battle Mode is vastly improved. Like you, I'm drawn more to the core racing, but having an occasional battle is fun to mix things up. And then comes the Booster Course Pass. Everyone was caught off guard from the announcement. Looking into it, it makes sense that Nintendo would want to preserve the city tracks from Mario Kart Tour. Couple that with the dominant sales of 8 Deluxe itself, and there's no need for a completely new Mario Kart on Switch. I enjoy playing the tracks of the BCP, despite the jarring difference in aesthetic. What really sold me were the added characters; seeing Birdo, Petey Piranha, and especially Diddy Kong now in Mario Kart 8 is a dream come true. Even Funky Kong, Pauline, and Kamek are loads of fun. All that said, Mario Kart 8 is truly a special game. Good job covering its 10-year history.
re: MK7 releasing so soon on the 3ds, mk7 felt rushed as hell and had so much shit missing, and even the real mk8 wii u had a ton of stuff missing and also felt rushed even without bumping up the release

I'm surprised you didn't talk about Deluxe's smart steering. It made the game much easier for little kids and casuals, and 200cc even more bearable. Smart steering made the game fun for my mom and my older sister, both who don't play video games, and it allowed both to regularly get 5th to 6th place, and my nephew, who was only 7 at the time.

@@leonro Despite being ripped straight out of Tour (Minus new tracks like Yoshi's Island), we still got 48 tracks for just 25$, plus 8 characters. That's a big value for this many returning tracks, in my opinion.
@@monumentvalley6681 But you're paying double the price for it.
Nothing makes working on a project easier than listening to Scott talk about Mario Kart 8 for an hour.
Ah yes, Mario Kart 8, the racing game that refuses to die.
Mario kart 8 the same game you guys bought again and it got sold to you 2x
The Thank You picture on N64 RR proves it is finally dead, at least with updates
With Mario kart 8 deluxe and the booster courses, playing shuffle with friends, makes it even more fun because there's just so many tracks.
Almost 10 years of MK8 is wild to think about... we're getting old ☠
In Japan, Mario Kart on GBA was called "Mario Kart Advance".
I actually remember walking into a GameStop on day 1 and picking up my preorder copy of this game, what a time to be alive
Me too! I got the game release date at GameStop. This game allowed me to get a free copy of Windwaker HD. Good times.
The best Mario Kart imo. Such a ridiculous solid game
I remember one of my friends made tons of spreadsheets for MK8 on the WiiU. Printed out, it took up a binder, full of all the possible cart combinations for optimal gameplay lol.
15:11 E. Gadd was originally planned for MKDS but was scrapped
More can be read on the TCRF page for the US Kiosk Demo
I for one am HYPED for super Mario kart 8 Deluxe +
10 MORE YEARS 10 MORE YEARS 10 MORE YEARS
My only real gripe with 8 deluxe after all the dlc and updates is that you can't swap the two items in the slot like in double dash. You don't even use the Y button in a race so why not use it. Yeah it might be awkward to hit it during a race, but I still wish it was possible
X instead of Y since it's closer to the A button
@@hylianro also it's like a cross symbol
Mario kart 8 is definitely the best of them all so far
A lot of people would still debate Wii (me) or Double Dash, but objectively MK8DX is best in many ways
MK7 forgettable? Huh? The one that introduced the land, water & sky gimmic? Come on man!
Tbf, water doesn’t change much & you don’t use the glider that much. They don’t alter the game AS much
10 years, boy time really goes by fast!
(But I still had my 3DS with me thankfully)
Eventually I would get Mario kart 8 deluxe for the switch and after playing the game a whole lot more I've come to actually appreciate it a lot and It's basically the Super Smash Bros Ultimate of Mario kart from my point of view.
Mario kart 8 deluxe is a phenomenal masterpiece!
You say Mario Kart 8 has been going strong for 10 years, while I'm out here still playing Mario Kart DS for the 18th year in a row.
not enough people talking about how hilarious the image of scott walking down the aisle is
Fitting that I watch this video 8 days after it came out
I’ve only ever played the Wii U version of MK8, and it feels wild to me that the game I bought on its launch day that was originally released on a console nobody bought is now the 6th best selling game of all time

That carpet isn't on the floor is it, crazy to think all this time it's been on a table, mimicking the sorta "kid on floor playing with toys" feel.
(Unless the camera just shook and the floor didnt move and im going crazy)
very smart of you Scott lol
I remember being in complete disbelief when I realized they didn't include Birdo in MK8. I was so sad but luckily she's back now 💜
Mario Kart 8 years of waiting for content
Still shocked 7 wasn't called something like "Mario Kart Supergliders 3D" and 8 wasn't something all "Mario Kart Wallriders U"
Hard to believe this is a decade old game-
Thats the same thing i said when playing twilight princess at 2018
Same with GTA5
This is still better looking then any mario kart clone thats coming out today lole
I was in third grade when MK8 came out, by the time MK8 DX booster course finished I was halfway through junior year. This game grew up with me.
Mario kart 8 already knew it was going to be a Switch title with that red spine
10 years of Mario Kart 8 and almost 20 years of no F-Zero.
That moment when you finish watching the new 2 hour Schaffrillas video only to immediately start watching the new 1 hour Scott video...
We live the same life, my friend
DUEL 1971 VROOM VROOM
same situation💀
Imagine watching that Schaffrillas hack
@@steelbear2063 Imagine judging someone else for who they watch 💀
Hard to get nostalgic when things never go away.
Here's to 20 more years of Mario Kart 8 !!!! 🎉😐🎉🫡
So you’re telling me that both GTA V and Mario Kart 8 came out 10 years ago? What in the blue hell man!
I hope they release one more DLC for MK8's 10th anniversary. ;D
Scott! The one weird piece of Mario media I haven't seen you do a video over yet is "The Super Mario Brothers Super Show!"
re: MK7 releasing so soon on the 3ds, mk7 felt rushed as hell and had so much shit missing, and even the real mk8 wii u had a ton of stuff missing and also felt rushed even without bumping up the release
I actually still play a lot of Mario Kart 8 online on Wii U. Such a shame the servers go down in April 😔
Back when I was a kid I thought they made too many Mario karts now they don’t make enough.
Hell yeah these long videos are the best I still have my Wii U copy from when the game came out time went by fast
God it's weird to realise how nostalgic I am for something that came out 10 years ago.
I remember SO much about the pre-release of this game
I noticed mario kart 8 is Nintendos gta V both came out around the same time, both had Re-releases, both got extra content years after release , both had bad to subpar spinoff(tour and gta de trilogy), now both games are wrapping up with new titles announced or very likely to get announced soon
I’m waiting for part 3! Ironically, newton is still rolling
i still remember freaking out in 2014 and shouting "YOU CAN SEE THE SEAMS ON MARIO'S OVERALLS!"
19:42 You can just hold select while standing still to get your balloons back
Great video! I skipped the Wii U, been playing MK8DX since its release on the Switch. It was nice to see the history of it all.
It’s been a fun almost 10 years
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Deluxe's smart steering. It made the game much easier for little kids and casuals, and 200cc even more bearable. Smart steering made the game fun for my mom and my older sister, both who don't play video games, and it allowed both to regularly get 5th to 6th place, and my nephew, who was only 7 at the time.
That's not an eight, it was an infinity sign all along!
