you've remind me of what someone once said "The mind is the man, the poor is in it and the rich is it too". This sentence is the secret of most successful investors. I once attended similar and ever since then been waxing strong financially, and i most tell you the truth..investment is the key that can secure your family future.
I urge everyone to start somewhere now no matter how small, this is literally the time for that, forget material things, don't get tempted,i became more better the moment i realized this.
yeah investment is the key to sustaining your financial longevity but venturing into any legitimate Investment without a proper guidance of an ex pert can lead to a great loss too
Yep, disagree with the braces....its often necessary- proper alignment affects the ability to chew properly and poor alignment can also mean you are putting extra force on the other teeth which can lead to lots of problems. As a dental professional I have also seen some really poor teeth,,,,this can also affect mental health
Not to mention the fact, that good and relatively straight teeth can make peoples first impression of you just better. I'd want that for my kid. Because it can be little things, that tip the scales in whether or not you get the appartment/job/whatever. If possible, i think making teeth a priority is a good idea
I agree and disagree, like I agree with your points. However there are some people that do pay their bills but they have just enough, so like them adding a braces bill for minor crooked teeth not necessary even if that means saving to have them later. If it's truly a health issue then ya budget for it but I think she's talking more on side of strictly cosmetic things doesn't need to be prioritized also from what we've seen of her kids their teeth all seem very healthy so even if not intentional she could have her own perceived you don't need that my kids don't have perfect teeth or braces and they're fine 🤷♀️ definitely don't think you can just say braces not necessary as a blanket statement. Moreso every small cosmetic thing doesn't need to be priority if money tight enough that saving isn't happening at all because then the smallest thing can literally cripple you financially
Braces can be necessary at times. One of my daughters had teeth growing in the through the top roof of her mouth, another coming in backwards. Even the orthodontist said hmm this one’s a different challenge. Now my oldest, had one or two slightly off teeth, so she did not absolutely need them. It just depends on the child.
Agreed, my mom had full dentures by 45 because she didn't get braces as a teen. Her mom & brother that didn't have them also needed dentures, her one brother that braces had all his teeth when he died in his 60's. I guess you could say paying for them in early adult years (or dealing with dentures) is their problem but that feels kind of cruel & that it really is a necessity in teen years.
I was going to say the same thing @lifebeyondthenest3827. My son had teeth coming in on top of other teeth. He would have had an abscess or lost his adult teeth if we just pulled them. Thankfully we got 3 quotes and only 1 Ortho said they could move things around and save his teeth 🙌
My dentist decided I didn’t need them when I was a teen but I’m now having to get them in my 30’s because not having them has made my front bottom teeth wear down so if you don’t pay for them, your kids will often have to spend far more as adults dealing with the consequences of not having them when they are young.
Yes! I had severe overcrowding and I looked like I had fangs (eyeteeth) I needed 4 teeth pulled before I got my braces. I was so self conscious about how I looked. I'm forever grateful my mom got them for me.
Braces were most definitely a necessity for me with only four teeth that touched and all those molars needing crowns from grinding. I got free consultations from ten Orthodontists before I found someone to work on me without breaking and plating my jaw. I made monthly payments for four years throughout College. It can be done but I had to eat a lot of rice pudding for breakfast lunch and dessert 😂
Braces are necessary because they impact your future work and romantic prospects. And your kids never asked to be born so the least you can do is address what genetic issues you can (vision, dental, medical). Like others have said it often corrects mouth issues that can lead to more dental bills as adults.
Mine too! Mine can’t have a car or phone until they buy them for themselves… and take on the monthly charges associated! I now have 4 financially stable young adults!
The Tightwad Gazette literally changed my life. I checked it out from the library first and then eventually bought it. It really challenged my mindset and changed my habits dramatically. I can’t be thankful enough for that book!
That last one? Sometimes it's really hiding behind a lack of inertia. Like, you really DO have time to research water purifiers so you can stop buying bottled water, but you just can't work up the motivation to actually get it done.
I've been cooking for my family for over 50 years. I still fail at things, largely because I try new things. I learn during the process. Start simple. Don't do complex things until you have the basics down.
Hi Christine! What? No performing arts talent you say? The one video where you gave the suggestion to wrap large packages with a paper tablecloth from the Dollar Tree and you placed the green paper tablecloth around your neck as a scarf was one of your best performances EVER!!!!🤣Thank you for all you do! 💕💕💕
Amy's books have been an asset in my life, I got her books from the library (in the mid 90s) to decide whether or not to buy them. Implementing as many of her ideas as possible, allowed me to work part time at home, home school the kids AND still get ahead a bit. Now that I am a handicapped widowed grandma, I use her books to keep me from slipping into a debt life.
I know someone...ok, it's me...who was a subscriber of "The Tightwad Gazette" newsletter and saved them inside a three ring binder. No need to spend money on the book when it came out!
With regards to fast food, not only is it more than you would spend to cook on your own and less healthy, but it's also really not that fast. You could make a 30 minute meal or something in the Crockpot to last a whole week (depending on the size of your family), and honestly it wouldn't take much more time than it does waiting in the drive-thru.
I've seen a couple other UA-camrs do a challenge to see which is faster. One person cooked the copycat version while their friend went to the drive-thru. Most times they were done and cleaning, waiting for the driver to get back so they could compare/eat together.
For me and my family, something that makes saving harder is turning 'sometimes' splurges into habits. Like 'sometimes' getting pizzas and fried chicken as a meal, to getting it about once a week. It really adds up. I think it really helps to keep your receipts and go over what you bought and what you spent for it. This also helps you to remember product prices so you can identify better deals later. And not finding anything good from a thrift store?? They ain't really looking. My whole current wardrobe is goodwill.
Some areas are better than others for thrifting. I think it has to do with the culture. We live in a great area for thrifting, but we moved here from an area that wasn't. You also have to go pretty often. Tuesdays are the best days to go for me... fresh stock from weekend donations.
Great video, as usual. But the end of the video is one of the main reasons I started watching you and fell in love with your channel…you don’t take yourself too seriously and you have fun! I remember telling my husband that I kept seeing “this lady’s”…that would be you…channel and she films videos coming straight from like the gym where she’s sweaty, has no makeup on, has her hair up and goes straight to the grocery store. She doesn’t go home, shower, get her hair and makeup done and then dress like she’s going to an award show to grab some chicken, fruit and veggies. She does not take herself seriously…in a good, non-egotistical way…and I LOVE that. You have a fan for life…and I love the doobily doo.😁
I 100% clashed with my husband on spending habits. We struggled for a few years, but we worked through it. I had to learn a lot from him. I think you definitely have to marry someone who respects you and is willing to learn from you and accepts that you could actually teach them something!
My husband and I share a credit union account, but we also have individual accounts and split the bills. Since he has been out sole income for many years, now, he transfers a lump sum into my account every month and I pay my part of our bills and I spend whatever is left or budget it into saving up for things I want that might be a little more than I have at the moment and still have a safety net. If the bills are a bit more, or if I'm running low on funds, we look at the budget and make it work, but usually, this method keeps us both paying close attention to what we're spending and has worked really well for us.
Agreed with all of these except for the braces... most of the time it helps with having less problems in the future, it make cleaning teeth easier, etc. My mom didn't have those when she was young and at 40 years old she had to get some because she had jaw problems and it helped with the surgery. I mean, I guess it depends if it affects health
I had to have braces. Teeth too big for jaw. Had 4 canine teeth pulled & had teeth moved forward. I was teased without mercy in my teenage years. Didn't smile
“Nobody is good at cooking from the beginning.” So true. I have a sister who is a fabulous cook, but I can remember disasters from her early teens when she was starting out. Me, I’m still an indifferent cook, but that’s because I don’t care.
Y’all are hilarious!! My teenagers expenses came in the form of shoes, performance clothes & camps - dance, pageants, band, show choir, track, tennis, cheerleading, football, baseball, basketball all day long - 2 pr of shoes a season all through college. The only reason I worked was to cover the kids expenses. With all of that activity there was an amazing amount of food consumption. I had to be creative & healthy. We were a block away from our HS & I fed a lot of kids. I will never regret it. We stayed in budget. Our son is back home after college - this economy doesn’t allow for anyone to buy or even rent. He’s a lifter. We make it work. I’m frugal. I figure it out. It’s all possible. It takes some time to find the deals but it’s worth it. I’ve been at it about 38 yrs. Keep on keeping on!
Love how Dave answered Excuse #4, and his honesty about his money goal not being the same as FFM's initially . . . "You have to gauge their flexibility on agreeing on goals."
I used to not care much about money but the older I get the more I care. We never eat out. We cut our heating bill by putting the thermostat down by a couple degrees. We invested in a device with an app and checked out what our electric was being used on and realized our ventilation system was sucking it up (literally) so we invested in a new one and within a year it will pay for itself. During the pandemic I learned how to cut my husband and son's hair and now I save a lot by doing it myself. We have invested in nice walking shoes and take walks in nature vs going places that cost money. I rarely buy clothes for myself and I often buy some things for my kids a bit bigger so they can grow into it and I never turn down hand me downs from cousins. We buy sale items at the store, etc. We do splurge on travel but I need to buy expensive plane tickets to see my family.
I have to disagree with braces. I would have been highly made fun of & my cousin already was too before braces. She had extra k9s & not enough room. My parents adopted her & sister. I had a huge overbite. My brother in law needed braces, then immediately jaw surgery to be able to close his jaw. Sister in law has crossbite. She needed them longer than she had. Our son may need them to make room for his abnormally large teeth. Yay genetics! Also a friend of ours sister had braces before being able to have jaw surgery right b4 turning 18. Before that some foods had to be blended including chicken soup. She struggled to eat normally. Braces are usually a requirement b4 jaw surgery. I'm not going to let my kid be made fun of for something I can change. I'd get a second job temporarily to pay for his braces over that personally.
The Author Brene Brown is a good listen on audible for anxiety and mental health. She is nit a self help author. She talks alot about anxiety, depression and shame. She is wonderful
You need to make time for finances, for budging, for shopping mindfully, meal planning, for saving, for setting financial goals as personal ones. Life is a priority
Braces can be a necessity for some people. My daughter had to get braces earlier than most kids for medical reasons. Without them she would have had long term health problems
Says your orthodontist who needs to make his Mercedes payment? Not trying to be rude, but just pointing out that most dental is a total scam. Most. See a holistic dentist and ask what they think. We need our teeth ans removing 4 or 6 or 8 or 10 of them in a kid is criminal.
I actually did need orthodontic work for medical reasons. The roof of my mouth was way too narrow and high, so I couldn't breathe through my nose. An orthodontist was able to expand it which also helped lower it so I could get some air through my nose. That also helped significantly reduce the number of sinus infections serious enough to require antibiotics each year. Braces also made it so my molars now touch in more that one small place so I can actually chew food with my molars now.
@@becreative2420 please give people credit for knowing what is best for them and their family. My granddaughter’s mouth was so crowded she couldn’t chew properly, and there was literally no room in her mouth for the new teeth that appeared a couple years earlier than expected. Now her mouth is filled with teeth that fit and work well together.
Oh my word that book is the best!!!! I found the complete three volume copy at my local thrift store shortly after getting married a few years ago. Although I'm an old soul- I would read the volumes my mom had when I was a younger teen😂
Braces are necessary for some. Overcrowding causes someone to be much more prone to cavities, headaches etc. I’ve suffered all my life with dental issues bc I needed braces and didn’t get them. So, YES….for long term savings please get braces if you have overcrowding.
I have always found great items at Thrift stores or garage sales especially when the girls were growing and you could get great deals on clothes and toys
We're a little late to the game, but after 35 years of marriage I learned that cooking is one of the least expensive things I can do, so I learned. I hated it. I still hate it. But I bought a second hand pressure cooker so I can hate it less. Is it relaxing? Not yet, but it's a learned behavior and I'm figuring that piece out. Cooking is for me, anyway, a discipline like exercise and practicing the violin. I don't do it because it feels great, I get that reward dopamine thing when I stick the funds into the envelope and step on the scale on Friday and see that I'm down another pound. We celebrate our 40th in July this year. You can teach an old dog new tricks.. :D
That's like me and mending clothes. I have five kids so there is always something that needs fixing. I do it because it's a heck of a lot better than replacing clothing for minor problems. I dislike it every time I do it, but I still do it.
I agree with everyone about the Tightwad Gazette. I used to get her snail mail newsletters before the books came out. I'm so glad I changed jobs in 2021 that is only 10 miles from home and I'm so much happier! Love the priority part! I find time to cook so I don't get take out like most of my coworkers.
I LOVE cassoroles!..Being a G.R.I.T(girl raised in the south) as I was, you may already have this recipe in your cooking repertoire ... Cabbage casserole..Sounds gross but it is delicious..Just stumbled upon this and gave it a try and I was pleasantly surprised!..Cook and let get about room temp b4 eating..even better cold the next day ..Would be great with either ground beef or sausage added as a full meal AND it makes a ton..Cassoroles ROCK!🍜
When it comes to braces, I desperately needed them, massively crooked teeth and excruciating pain, but my family could not afford them even with the financial assistance program that was available at the time. I was the youngest child out of four being raised by a single mom. So, my dentist offered a different solution. He removed 8 of my teeth. That almost completely took care of the situation. Most importantly all of the pain and bleeding went away! Now as an adult only two of my bottom teeth are slightly crooked and the rest of my teeth spread out and filled in the gaps. When I go to a new dentist now they always remark I must have had braces as a kid, nope had a bunch of teeth removed. I feel I have a beautiful smile and in the long run the solution the dentist gave saved my mom a lot of stress and financial pain. While braces may not be extremely important in the long run, in certain situations they are medically necessary and not just for looks. My point is that our dentist listened to us and worked with us to find a fix. If needed please find a dentist who will listen to all your concerns, including financial hardships.
Your teeth are one of the first things people notice about you. I think braces or other dental work like you had can be VERY necessary! Just my 2 cents. Glad you found a solution! ❤
I cut the cable many years ago, I was using the tv as noise, so I turned on the computer for noise, never looked back. I don't have a tv, cell phone, a microwave or a dishwasher. I lived through it and never looked back, other than wow, I saved a lot of money. Great vid, thank you
3 volumes of the Tightwad Gazzette. Some things ARE relevant. The basic mindset of "need" vs "want" is still 100% relevant. I have not patience with "I can't cook" or "it's easier to...."
I broke the cable/satellite chain a couple months ago and wow, all the free stuff out there. We cook at home and don’t eat out a lot. Trying my hand with stir fry and homemade sticky buns
About the utility bills - it’s flexible based on how cold/hot you are willing to deal with. My son (early 20s) lives with me. He prefers the temps more comfortable - so that’s his bill. If he decides to run the AC it’s a cause/effect bill.
You two are so cute. Learning to cook is one thing, but learning to make a tasty meal with what you get from the food bank or garden is a level up! Sometimes it’s weird stuff and goulash and “garden soup” with biscuits are great! Bonus you toss in leftover meat or beans!
I passed on my Tightwad Gazette books to my daughter so she can learn from them. Amy had a few books out on the market during that time and I bought them all. I loved those books, I read them multiple times when I was a young wife. Marked them, got ideas from them, learned valuable information from them. Putting that information into practice along with learning from my gram who was raised during the Depression, gave me lots of great information at the beginning of my life as an adult, and has helped me all these years later.
I have the Complete Tightwad Gazette. I've read all 900+ pages twice and I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say Amy's lessons in proud frugality changed my life.
YES! I bought Amy's book a few years ago. I love it! She could be my mom. Great book with so many great ideas. You can use her ideas with your own twist. I do wash my baggies, if they aren't too gross. I don't eat out but find recipes to make those foods. I watch you tube. No TV. We can make this work if we want to.
Enjoy your videos! All the time I was growing up, I thought I hated asparagus. I knew it! No question in my mind at all. Several decades later, somebody tells me that I could actually eat asparagus raw! My mom never served it raw. For all I knew it was poisonous raw. I tried it raw, and it’s now a favorite vegetable…. When your son specified that, he wasn’t really thrilled with asparagus, I wondered… Does he know you can eat it raw and it’s delicious? It’s not poisonous at all! If you’ve only served steamed, try serving it raw and see if he likes it that way…
I loved the Tightwad Gazette! I found them when we lived in East Africa… it made so much sense that Americans needed to learn to live with less… I am 58 if age figures into my opinions!
I own all of Amy’s Books and have referred to them during many times in our life when we needed to frugal. After reading them for the first time, I have looked at saving money in a very different way. I always hoped that she would write new books. Some of the ideas did not apply to me, but there were so many that still apply! The books are definitely are not items I will declutter even after all of these years.
I agree with most but in this day and age, I feel, you have to have some type of communication. I mean, you don't need a $900 phone, but at least some phone to make calls are almost a necessity. Also, I care for my disable mother and brother. How do you try to save money when they get their own money and want to spend it on what they want ? I mean, how can I tell my mom, "no, I am not allowing you to buy that"? I really wish there were people on UA-cam that talks about that because that complicates the situation more. I love the video! 😃
Have you tried sitting them down and going through the bills with them and asking them outright which bills they will be covering out of their money. A bit like children the choice being made is between 2 specific bills/jumpers no bills isn't a choice. Or they pay for any of their extras out of their money. Since your the "parent" treat them like teenagers your preparing for future adulthood.
@@maryt8600 I do, my brother just doesn't understand at all, he doesn't have the capacity to. My mom does get it, and she works with me, but I feel like I am punishing her if she asks for something and I tell her we have already spent the money and put the other up for the emergency fund, and she says ok, but I can tell in her voice she is sad, it makes me feel so bad. Of course, she is not trying to make me feel bad, I just do. It is just so tricky that it sometimes gets me down and don't even want to budget or save.
I just changed jobs. Going from a weekly to biweekly paycheck, and it's been an adjustment with my spending. Just...knocking my budget off balance. Urgh! BUT....I am MUCH happier and LESS stressed now!! ❤🎉 I just need to readjust my budget to fit.
Still Struggling! I we t to Krogers over the weekend. With NO PLAN. NO LIST. And spent $73 like HOW! I did find some great discounts...I realized the majority of the food was MEATS. Anyone else think meat prices have gotten RIDICULOUS?!?
Christine, you and your family are a real scream! Y’all are genuinely funny. I heart the whole bunch of you. Great tips and I will try (and probably fail at the majority) to employ some of these.🤞🏾Thanks so much for sharing.
Your kids are very special to accept your no cell phone policy. I understand they don’t have a choice but they’re likely the only ones without a phone. Unfortunately, teachers utilize phones as part of the curriculum as well as coaches. It’s VERY difficult to maintain communication without a cell phone. I love being able to communicate with my kids while they’re at school or when they’re at work or with friends.
I love the Tightwad Gazette books. I had them all while raising my kids. They helped me get out of debt and had awesome recipes, ideas, and tips. I love them.❤
My teenage girls ate more when they didn't have a list of things to accomplish for the day. Chores really helped them control their hunger. So did walking. I did not do any frivolous driving. When they wanted to go to a friend's house that lived not far away, they walked.
I used to spend money as fast as I earned it, but my husband is more frugal and I learned to be as well. We looked at the actual numbers and made a goal to use the snowball method to eliminate our student loan debt (which we were able to accomplish). The keys to me succeeding in money saving were to have specific goals and regularly measure our progress towards them, and to have the ultimate goals (having kids and being able to buy a house) be more motivating than the instant gratification of shopping.
I followed the Tightwad Gazette back when it was a monthly newsletter mailed to your home in the late 80s. I still follow many of Amy's suggestions. But yours are more my style now.
Your younger son is looking just like his dad. I think when people say they don’t have time frequently they mean they don’t have energy. Lastly, I love how much you two laugh.
Braces can be necessary to fix structural issues and prevent dental decay later in life. My son decided he didn't want braces and I was like ok it's your face. After a few years our dentist was like hey....if he doesn't get this bite issue addressed, he's going to have major dental and jaw issues as an adult. Different than fixing spaces or a crooked tooth, which is completely unnecessary to fix.
I love the content! If we know our priorities we may work on saving money! My teen son does not own a phone, my oldest own a car, but he payed part of the bill as he and my husband are using the car together. My priorities are eating well - I cook everything from scratch: pasta, pizza, beans…; we like traveling and nice cars. To be able to hold our standards, I do my own nails, we all cut our hair ourselves, I do all the cleaning and we all do our best to not waste any money. We go abroad every few years, and 2 a year we get the Nnice cart seating on the garage and we go on a road trip close to home. however I keep tabs on everything: food, rentals, attractions, flight…. I research in advance and my husband and I we set a budget for that. My degree in hospitality helps save and be safe here!😂 Also my medical bill is almost none, due to walking the dogs every day and exercising from home. Sharing experiences may help us all to have a better life and be happiest.
Before I was financially stable I used to work all the overtime in the winter because there was nothing to do anyway! Then did my reg four 10’s in the summer to go camping and play outside.
My sister chose to only do "dumb" phones for her teenagers so they would be able to stay in contact. It keeps them off the internet but allows them to be able to text the way we have to when phones first came out. Or they can just call their friends.
I lived for 4yrs in AZ on $15k/yr, comfortably. And my yearly expenses were only $9k-$11k/yr. Now I make GOOD money, and my annual expenses are now only $23k/yr. And that is with me owning property, 2 airplanes, a car, etc. Not all of that expense is NECESSARY! I could sell my airplanes and save Thousands per year in fuel, oil, maintenance, hangar, insurance, etc.
my husband & I set a goal to pay off our mortgage early when we bought this house so we paid 1/12 of the mortgage extra each month payment and paid off our mortgage the year before my husband retired so we just have our home insurance and Property tax. We also put as much that we could in retirement fund each paycheck.
Also mail coupons are still great for home supply , diapers, medicine, makeup , shampoo , etc. Plus activating your cash back double up the Savings on top of the coupons. I have saved a lot! You do not have to choose cheaper brands to save money you just need to find the right coupons. 😊 I hope this help!
Watching/listening as I double check the flyer app and reorg the menu plan to ensure a) use what we have (fridge, freezer & pantry) b) don't over buy - and yeah, no food ever goes to waste in this household. Yeah us !!! So grateful I enjoy cooking and always make time for food or meal prep ❤ I'll admit I measured my foot against my forearm saying the entire time no way, no way nah, oh man NO FRIGGIN WAY!!! yup same size😲 and my wing span is shorter than my height!! no wonder all jackets and long sleeve tops are ALWAYS way too long😡 Great video Christine!
She is talking in general terms. For most people, it's not a necessity but just for appearances. When it's a medical reason, you're the exception and not the rule.
I agree that sometime braces are a necessity, like they are for one of my kids. BUT you should definitely shop around. Got an assessment from an ortho 4 years ago: both kids in braces, multiple extractions, headgear and a palette expander. Then the pandemic hit and we hit the pause button. Four years later, that ortho isn’t on our insurance so we saw one that was. One kid needs no braces, one kid just needs upper and lower brackets and rubber bands. The price for the first ortho? 13,000 for both kids. The price from the second ortho? 3100. A 10,000 difference.
Love your videos sis and you have a beautiful fam!!! Thanx for all the great tips and encouragements!!! Been following ur channel since 2020!! Love and blessings!! 🙏 ❤️ 🕊️
❤🎉 wonderful part with putting your boys in there with their opinions. I agree with everything you say even though I don't have kids. You really have to be frugal in order to be able to take the vacations or to have the experiences and be able to pay for them. Loved the out-takes!
1. 1:52 I’m no good at cooking 2. 3:16 My family won’t eat casseroles 3. 4:04 I’m not a creative person 4. 8:09 My wife spends everything I save 5. 9:39 Teenagers are expensive 6. 13:15 it’s difficult to make ends meet 7. 14:47 I don’t have time to chase deals 8. 16:28 we don’t have any good thrift stores near us 9. 17:30 I don’t have time to…
Teenagers are expensive is true. I think the most expensive thing is probably activities. Sure it's not a right or necessary but you want your kid to have those experiences and people able to do what they love.
I absolutely love watching your videos I'm a mama of five full-time job I help my husband with his UA-cam cooking channel a lot of times I don't know what to cook so I head on over to your videos and I figure it out keep up the great you're such an inspiration 💯❤️

Very true, some cases they are needed!
Yes to thrifting and garage sales. Being intentional with lights, heat, and laundry can help w utility bills.
Braces are necessary because they impact your future work and romantic prospects. And your kids never asked to be born so the least you can do is address what genetic issues you can (vision, dental, medical). Like others have said it often corrects mouth issues that can lead to more dental bills as adults.
I'm so so so happy to hear another mom who believes kids shouldn't have phones
Yes! None of our kids have their own device, phone, tablet, etc.
Another mom , here! My kids are 10 and 7, and already know... there is no phone in their future.
The oldest os 13. No phone...
Mine too! Mine can’t have a car or phone until they buy them for themselves… and take on the monthly charges associated! I now have 4 financially stable young adults!
We don’t have phones either 6 kids
Both of my parents sucked with financial anything. They spent more than they made. It has taken me years to learn how to handle finances.
The Tightwad Gazette literally changed my life. I checked it out from the library first and then eventually bought it. It really challenged my mindset and changed my habits dramatically. I can’t be thankful enough for that book!
Same story here. In fact, it's in my living room because I've been skimming through it. Never hurts to refresh the memory
Amén.
Me too! Helped me get out of debt and save for a new house. Amy is amazing.
Whenever I feel discouraged I read through it to get ideas.
I had the book too! Both humorous and helpful -- just did a quick search and found she published 3 editions and then a compilation book of all three.
I just want to say “I’m sorry” for not watching your show earlier in my life!!! 😊 but I’m glad I’m watching now.
That last one? Sometimes it's really hiding behind a lack of inertia. Like, you really DO have time to research water purifiers so you can stop buying bottled water, but you just can't work up the motivation to actually get it done.
I love you. I live off 900 a month. I have no debt but find it really difficult. So I'm constantly finding eays to save. ❤
@@mysticmermaid333the UA-camr is Joshua weissman
@@blackbutterfly233ify yes. He's one of them. I've also seen others do it, like Ethan Chlebowski and Kwook.
Goodwill wardrobe over here too! Holla!!!!!!!
Wow kudos to you, every woman I've ever met had 'non-negotiable' spending habits 😂
Hahaha
A friend's husband absolutely refused to eat a casserole........ but, if she called it a "bake" he was all in! LOLOL
Same
I have to disagree with braces.
I love how your spouse chooses to spend time with you.
The Author Brene Brown is a good listen on audible for anxiety and mental health. She is nit a self help author. She talks alot about anxiety, depression and shame. She is wonderful
Beautiful family, God bless you all
You need to make time for finances, for budging, for shopping mindfully, meal planning, for saving, for setting financial goals as personal ones. Life is a priority
Well said.
That's a full time job
@Marcia Russell not really if done a little every day. Meal planning is once a week.
@@becreative2420 not an orthodontist. I was concerned for my daughter due to multiple medical issues. Her doctor recommended braces.
Facebook buy nothing groups can be great for decluttering and for finding things you need.
Braces can actually be necessary for the proper alignment and function of the mouth and jaw.
I hate cooking too. Not everyone loves it or even remotely enjoys it.
Those Gazette books were my bibles in 1990s as a stay at home mom
I love the Tightwad Gazette and Dining on a Dime cookbooks. Amy didn't want to write a cookbook so Dining on a Dime did it.
I broke the cable/satellite chain a couple months ago and wow, all the free stuff out there. We cook at home and don’t eat out a lot. Trying my hand with stir fry and homemade sticky buns
STIRFRY:
Szechuan sauce, shallots, matchstick carrots, matchstick carrots, canned shitakes, garlic, leftover pork roast, hot chili oil, sunflower oil, red pepper
About the utility bills - it’s flexible based on how cold/hot you are willing to deal with. My son (early 20s) lives with me. He prefers the temps more comfortable - so that’s his bill. If he decides to run the AC it’s a cause/effect bill.
I ❤ lettuce too!
The joy in your marriage is a testament to living frugally! Love you two!
I have a 15 year old and he doesn’t have a phone. And my 12 year old- no phone. Only ones of their friends. Mind blowing!
You two are so cute.
Learning to cook is one thing, but learning to make a tasty meal with what you get from the food bank or garden is a level up! Sometimes it’s weird stuff and goulash and “garden soup” with biscuits are great! Bonus you toss in leftover meat or beans!
We are part of the 1% no cell phones for kids either! We have 13, 11, 10 and 8 year olds. I want them to be able to leave the drama at school!!
You won't regret it.
I love the sense of humor in your family ❤
Humor IS a form of creativity!
I had £230 Vet bill today plus more to come. So glad I have an emergency fund.
We have huge vet bills and a large emergency fund. I agree! Thank God for it!
I love watching Dave & Christine interact - such fun!
I love them.❤
Girl I can use all the money saving tips you have, especially these days. I love watching you and Dave together. You all look so happy and in love. ❤
The Psychology of Money is phenomenal. It was life changing for me. ❤👍🏼
It's crazy to see how much your kids have grown since I started following you a few years ago! Time flies...
I love the relationship u have with your family… u seem to genuinely enjoy each other and I think it’s beautiful.
I followed the Tightwad Gazette back when it was a monthly newsletter mailed to your home in the late 80s. I still follow many of Amy's suggestions. But yours are more my style now.
I can prep and cook dinner in less time than it takes my husband to figure out what to order from Door Dash or Uber Eats and have it delivered. 🤣
The reason is a joy to watch is your genuine enthusiasm
Your younger son is looking just like his dad. I think when people say they don’t have time frequently they mean they don’t have energy. Lastly, I love how much you two laugh.
I loved the Tightwad Gazette. The homemade granola is a favorite!
"Make time!"
I preach this!
Tightwad Gazette was my loving resource in the 1990s
My degree in hospitality helps save and be safe here!😂
Also my medical bill is almost none, due to walking the dogs every day and exercising from home.
Sharing experiences may help us all to have a better life and be happiest.
I have all of the Tightwad Gazette books…recommended by a frugal blog and I found them used. Guess I should actually read them! Lol
Before I was financially stable I used to work all the overtime in the winter because there was nothing to do anyway! Then did my reg four 10’s in the summer to go camping and play outside.
I have this book! I took it out of the library multiple times and finally wound up buying it. I've been using those techniques since the 90's!
A+ lady. Love, rev.
My sister chose to only do "dumb" phones for her teenagers so they would be able to stay in contact. It keeps them off the internet but allows them to be able to text the way we have to when phones first came out. Or they can just call their friends.
I would love to see you do a collage with Under the Median! You both have lots of great saving ideas.
Tightwad - by a Maine girl LONG before “frugality” and “minimalism” became fashionable and cool. AYUH!!
my husband & I set a goal to pay off our mortgage early when we bought this house so we paid 1/12 of the mortgage extra each month payment and paid off our mortgage the year before my husband retired so we just have our home insurance and Property tax.
Yeah us !!! So grateful I enjoy cooking and always make time for food or meal prep ❤
I'll admit I measured my foot against my forearm saying the entire time no way, no way nah, oh man NO FRIGGIN WAY!!! yup same size😲 and my wing span is shorter than my height!! no wonder all jackets and long sleeve tops are ALWAYS way too long😡 Great video Christine!
She is talking in general terms. For most people, it's not a necessity but just for appearances. When it's a medical reason, you're the exception and not the rule.
@@RobinSparkle2 what are talking about?
I agree that sometime braces are a necessity, like they are for one of my kids. BUT you should definitely shop around. Got an assessment from an ortho 4 years ago: both kids in braces, multiple extractions, headgear and a palette expander. Then the pandemic hit and we hit the pause button. Four years later, that ortho isn’t on our insurance so we saw one that was. One kid needs no braces, one kid just needs upper and lower brackets and rubber bands. The price for the first ortho? 13,000 for both kids. The price from the second ortho? 3100. A 10,000 difference.
Great couple! Every marriage should be like this.
