I'm a flight attendant. Our plane had to be towed to a new gate this morning before we were able to get onboard. I knew it would take ages. I sat down with my $2 thrift shop book to wait. Every single one of the other crew members ran off to spend money on overpriced food, drinks, lotions etc. Not frugal little me! I don't mind being different!

I actually love budgeting. I do mine on an excel spreadsheet. As you recommended I automate bill paying and I also automate my base savings each month. While most fixed expenses don't allow flexibility the non-fixed do. So I make a game of how little can I spend in the flexible areas. The less I spend the more I can save towards a goal. Another thing I do is participate in budget helper programs when available to reduce those budget speed bumps. Once a year I pick one item as my budget fixer and I research to find ways to reduce the cost of that line item as much as possible. I then sit down once a week and go through my budget to make sure I'm on track.

I like that you put the budget in terms of it allowing spending in a category instead of restricting it. It feels way better to say, “I get to spend this much,” even if it amounts to spending less than before.

I read constantly in Facebook groups that people have no money and no power to change it. It makes me insane. More money isn't just going to fall into your lap you have to do something about it. You have to work for it. So many say they don't have time or can't do this or that, that's because you aren't making it a priority. Sukc it up, stop blaming your circumstances and go for it. You hold the power to change your life. No one else doe. S

My mom worked at her job for 34 years and was able to retire at 54 because every time she got a raise in pay, she acted like she didn’t. She saved that extra money and has been able to live debt free all of her life. A couple other factors contributed to it too, like purchasing bonds directly from her pay that matured in 7 years as opposed to nowadays. But those bonds are what sent me to college and allowed me to live debt free too. These tips are great because they really are doable. You need to be disciplined but it gives us so much more freedom.

We put my husbands pay rise into the mortgage as it’s extra paid to the mortgage it’s also helps pay that forever increasing interest rates (here in Australia it’s rising every month), BUT if we need it we can just take it straight back out. Paying of the house atm is a priority and we can also save by putting the extra into it.

@@jessann5581 I don’t know about Australia and rising mortgage interest rates, unless you have an interest only mortgage, but here in the US, if you make one extra mortgage payment a year, it reduces a 30 year mortgage to 21 years. I was a real estate paralegal before I had my kids so I keep practicing what’s most beneficial to our finances in the long run. I think making extra mortgage payments is a great investment for yourself and your home!

A lot of years ago I received a $600 utility bill. It was incorrect but it took awhile to prove it. It turned out that the bill should have been $39 and change. If I had my bills automated I would have bounced a lot of checks and incurred fees for doing so. That's the reason I don't automate. I've heard several people say that they've received bills that were high for various things and they turned out to be incorrect. My temptation is one of 2 candy bars. It's rare that I buy either of them. I'm driving a 16 year old Japanese car and I plan to drive it a lot longer.

I’ve been selling things around my house I no longer use or need, I’ve got lots of kitchen gadgets 😂, I’ve just bought an instant pot, used it twice so far, love it! So I can now sell my rice cooker that does a few things my instant pot does, I don’t need it anymore.
I’ve got left over items from when I used to sell on eBay so have been selling those.
I’m an artist so trying to sell my paintings, I think that’s the hardest one of all 😂
I’ve got 5 garden beds so far, am in the process of building another one, I’m going to be canning things also, my idea is to do it just for myself but if I had an excess of something then I could sell what I make.
Heaps of ideas to make money.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I got over my dislike for a budget about 15 years ago. My husband and I had a pretty tight budget at that time. I went Christmas shopping with 2 friends. I knew exactly how much money I had available to spend and what gifts I had left to buy. My friends had no clue what they wanted to buy or how much they would spend. They joked that their husbands would be angry when they got home because of how much money they'd spent. It was in that moment I realized how much freedom and peace I had with my budget. I could completely enjoy our outing without the stress of a future fight looming on the horizon. Budget = freedom & peace!!!

Unfortunately our biggest money sink has been medical bills. My husband and I both have chronic illnesses/ disabilities that have been ongoing since shortly after we married. Every year, over a third of our income goes to medical bills. Add in our pets getting cancer and its been especially rough the last 6 years or so. Because the medical tests/scans/visits aren't "regular" they're difficult to budget for. We save what we can to make sure the bill is paid when its due, but that inevitably wipes out the funds. We've cut out everything we could cut as expenditures, and aren't physically able to work additional jobs for more income.

My household really, really likes flavored drinks. And I struggle with being dehydrated, so I don't force pure water. So instead of buying like bottles of gatorade, I purchase 6 gallon containers of powder. I get a free bag of coffee a week from starbucks as long as I work there, so I've stocked up on those and put in airtight containers and put em in dry, dark cabinets (or freezer) to keep em in good (not perfect, but good) condition for years. You can get tea in sealed containers or individual packets and again with dry dark cabinets you can keep for years. With the exception of Jasmine. That disappears lol. But by keeping all this stocked when I can get it for cheap- airtight containers and cabinets off the floor and out the sun are your best friends- and still enjoy the little things in life like flavored drinks

I love your tips and the enthusiasm in your videos! My husband earns a six figure salary, we budget, live simply, do not buy extravagant items, and have a good grasp on needs vs wants. So where does all of our money go? #1 property taxes! Our property taxes amount monthly is higher than our mortgage. We are not unique in this, many people are living in areas where we pay ridiculous amounts in taxes.
So to answer where do the people who make more money spend their money, well for some of us it’s paying for taxes, and inflation of everything else on top of that.

Excellent ideas. The one I am going to start immediately is returning to writing everything down. I did this in the past, and slipped away from it. Being aware of where every $ goes is essential to me. I am retired, live on SS. Past side hussles included sewing craft items, making purses and totes and selling some art work. I’m 75 now, the side hussles became too much, I’ve had to back off.

We live below our means, family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teens, my husband is the income earner and I work part time but we still have everything we want and need and this year we will have our mortgage paid off within 8 years. No other debts. We'd rather take a holiday and go camping in between than buy a clutter of stuff that ends up being donated. We buy quality stuff over cheap, cook from scratch, eat out every once in a while and buy and live mindfully, healthy and happily. Oh and any extra income and tax return money was always put on the mortgage and not spent on any other stuff. That was a huge help towards paying off our mortgage quicker.

Love all this! I actually follow a lot of what you’re saying and have been for years. I used to go to Costco several times a month for “an item” I needed but we all know you can’t go to Costco for one item. I started keeping the receipts and adding them up. Each month I’d add up between $400-700!!! I forced myself to limit my Costco trips to once a month and I have reduced my shopping costs so much. Also I make a lot from scratch so that has reduced my grocery spending too. With Amazon, when I see an item I like I put it in my cart and save for later. Right now I have 600 items saved 😆 this gives me a chance to rack up some gift cards through apps like Ibotta and Fetch and also monitor something I really want for When it goes on sale. Unless it’s a real need that I have to order right away, I can wait.

I wish I could pull off a side hustle. But I work full time, coach, and go to school so there's barely time to talk to my husband. I do agree with it though. My way of looking at it is if we can aim to pay off one car, then pile that into the other car, we can have both cars paid off in a year. That's extra money right there. But it will probably all go to my schooling which will eventually land me a job where I will make more money. But the big thing is it is slow. None of this is a fast fix. You won't see immediate results but after a month or two you'll suddenly be like, woah, there's extra money.

Hey, Amazon isn't just junk spending. For us in rural places things like a vacuum sealer and bags, food processor, cereal container, bread box, glass butter dish, mini USB cord for calculator (not micro or c!), Dehydrated onions and peppers, seed planting kit and trays, coconut extract, garden gloves, space blankets.... These are just a few of my recent orders that aren't available here and if they are they are much more expensive. I do order once a month after payday, not willy nilly though

You just made something click for me. I used to hate calendars and daily schedules because they restricted me - but they actually free up time. Your comment about your friend loathing budgets helped me see that it’s the same thing!!!

This may sound sad, but one thing that has curbed my spending is the spate of recent mall shootings. Since the shooting in Boise last year, I have been unable to go to that mall. I also avoid Walmarts, etc. When I do shop in a store, I get in and out quickly. I honestly thought “It can’t happen here in Idaho,” until it did.

That is sad. I’m sorry you feel afraid to be there for fear of being shot. That sounds awful. No jk. I’m sorry that it’s hard for you.

I’ve started a list that I can’t shop at Target in odd months* and can’t shop at Amazon in even months.
*Exception if I literally need Kleenex, etc., and can only buy that. No matter what. But I try to keep a supply on-hand so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Years ago, I made sacrifices and snowballed monthly payments to get rid of all debt except mortgage, then started saving. When I got a better job in another city, I was able to put a significant down payment on the next modest home, and kept saving. I pay extra on the mortgage, on track to have the house paid off in a few years. I use "cash back" credit cards for most things, including regular bills, and pay the balance in full each month, so the banks are actually paying ME. Drove the same modest pre-owned car 15+ years, then paid cash for the next one. Got an emergency fund, plus separate funds for known expenses like a new roof, furnace, etc. You'd think I'd feel pretty good about this. But no, I worry about my retirement account getting its butt kicked in the stock market. And just one accident, serious illness, or natural disaster can wipe out all my progress.
