Those diodes are fried and as you say, bearings and brushes are shot.

For my 1HDT 80 I replaced with a 120amp Terrain Tamer on and I paid $320 direct off their website. It was delivered that same day as well.

That's why I always put a bit of dielectric grease on or in my major electrical component connections. Really can save you some headaches.
The inner bit where the brushes run against is called a slip ring
hope you've got deep pockets Patrick this is just the start of your money expenses lots more on up grades and breakages for mudding and off roading.....your doing a good job on the spanners. ....saves on mechanic repair bills and a good learning experience........on the Landcruiser 80 series ....fellow ex Landcruiser owner my self..and 4wd driver
The alternator that you took off was the original Toyota one. The pivot holes in the aluminium wore oval in mine, I have pushed in bushers to fix this problem.

I went wheeling with some friends not long after I bought my Land Rover discovery series one, they all went through massive bog holes and I decided not to. They all gave me hell because I was “too scared to get my car dirty” apparently. On the way home two cars had their alternators fail on them and I had the last laugh!
Dude, Discovery 1 got high mounted Alternator... its bassicale free from that issues :P I own one so i knew.

Silicone spray everything! vonnectors guts of the alternator etc. Unfortunately itll stuff up again after a water crossing or bog hole that u cant avoid. Grab a sealed unit. Do it right do it once. Far cheaper in the long run. Excellent vid bro. Love the channel

It's all a pain in the arse when shit goes wrong. But for young blokes like you lot, it's the golden opportunity to practice your diagnosis and repair skills👍👍👍
BTW, while I get merch is expensive for you guys to get into, I really don't need another sticker. If you can get a few alternatives out there, I'd be interested. I want a warm hoodie and like the Snatch camo ones...probably will get one from them, but if you offered one, too, I would get one on the days I have a spare $60-70 I'd rather not spend on beer 😉😉

I’m glad it’s not just my boots that get caught on the seat
I bought the same brand alternator as a replacement for mine and it lasted a year and then I went in mud and the bearings started to be noisy and the rectifier is Corroded but I pulled it apart and replaced the bearings and it still works!
it looked pretty rs, its pretty common for alts to fail after getting seriously wet.the brushes swell when wet and stick. i used to just have a spare and swap them out, the brushes do dry out. 270 instead of 500, nice 1. at least they don't have vac pumps on the back like the older ones, think they used to cost 1g.
Now if that was a Land Rover, everyone would be screaming ‘unreliable’. Maybe you can fashion up a splash guard to deflect mud away in future. Top work anyway. Good to see you’re handy with tools. 👍🏻🙏🏽😷🦘

Patrol always save the day. Can you rig something like splash guard around the bottom of the alternator ?

JAS and the other FOB electricals are used by mechanics because they're cheap, and last until the liability period ends. If you're after something to deal with all the abuse, it's worth paying the extra. Do a side-by-side comparison and you'll see it's night and day in terms of build quality and materials used.
Yeah, another reason why not to drive through things you do not know what is in there.. there could have been sticks or things that could have gone through your radiator also.. so think of that.. I have bent the seat slider arm inwards a little bit so that it doesn't catch on my boots. I have been looking at altrernator prices and thats a good price.. some others are $360 and most are $595 from Bursons and places like that and allfourx4, where I get most of my stuff from online they deliver in the post quite quickly but they are in Newcastle and I'm in Melb.

U can also take it out of the bottom......good if youve got a second battery in that corner anyway

Well the alternator would have had to been replaced in the near future anyway, so better it happened on a local trip than if you were 100s of km from home.
I didn't realize how low the alternator was in 80 is there a relocation bracket you can get to bring it up higher ?
was the alternator making like a ticking rattling sound when you were away ?

Also if you have no charge your 80 will still run it just won’t charge the battery

$270 for a new alternator is a bargain mate. Those cheaper Chinese JAS ones are normally around $350. And yes a good quality Japanese Denso and the likes are closer to $600. See how long it lasts lol I have a cheap one too. 1 year warranty. Hmm
I have done about 30 of them over the years them and starter motors if this is a big deal for you better stick to the black stuff
Now you need to go back to the same mudhole and try again.... it's only $200-300 bucks entry fee each time :)

The Patrol steering box needs adjusting - way too much freeplay.
Stupidest place to mount alternator in 4wd... :P Relocate it or replace to fully sealed one with water cooling.
The only thing that annoys me about your videos.. when you're talking to the camera you're looking at yourself, not the camera! lol other than that, spot on!

That's the cheap Chinese version... if you look at the cable it's an adapter. The original is round socket not oval..
Ps do not overtighten the belts or they will start jumping the pully.

AU$270 sounds like a steal for a alternator.
November last year I asked for a price on a Terrain tamer alternator for a HZJ76 and the price was about AU$ 984, 66.
Keep in mind this wasn't in Australia. I was looking for a upgraded alternator over the stock one.

I think you made the right choice getting a new alternator, rather than trying to fix the old one. I also think you guys are past the age of doing stupid things in the bush, glad you used common sense and pulled the pin when you did. Look after the 80 and you'll get a lot of fun from it.
