Having spent time in both Vietnam and Cambodia over the past 10 years, I have definitely made my mind up about which country I prefer!
In this video, I break down my experience of expat life in Vietnam and Cambodia and share with you why I would only ever live in one of the countries!
Both Vietnam and Cambodia have their pros and cons, but I know which one I prefer!
But as I say at the start of the video, different strokes for different folks!
Where do you prefer to live as an expat? Vietnam or Cambodia?
Have you already lived in Cambodia or Vietnam as an expat?
Are you planning to travel to Cambodia?
Maybe you are planning to move to Vietnam to live as an expat?
If so, I hope this video has been helpful for you and gives you an idea of the main differences between living in Vietnam vs. living in Cambodia as an expat.

Crime is difference from thief. This is very important. Ie. I preferred to live with thief but not crime. What you said is more likely relate to potential thief (neither thief nor crime). Do I wording is close to your terminology?

Cambodia is a little pricey, but the country is not as crowded as in Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia has a very rich culture.. Been to Thailand a few years ago and stayed there for a month. I wanted to come back to the States after two weeks..

Went to Phnom Penh for a visa run from Vietnam and decided to stay 3 weeks. I'd have to agree with most of ur points between the two countries. I was very surprised it cost more for just about everything there PP. It's a few years behind HCMC/Hanoi in development and you can tell, both have beautiful history but if I'm staying long term, I see Vietnam being a better fit for me.
I also felt you had to be more aware of ur surroundings in PP (even tho I was never robbed). I was charged different prices for street food I go to regularly (most Street food and markets don't have prices). I was told my cell plan was one month unlimited and it worked for a week only. No change from my tuktuk etc.

Been to Vietnam and Thailand they are way too crowded. Cambodia has better village foods such as the cow organ and beef meat. Cambodians are not as industrious but they know how to have a good time. Siem Reap is amazing with its tree lined river and the nearby jungles. Cambodia: rustic charms, authenticity and small government. I lived in BKK HN and PP, Southeast Asian Capitals are a mix of blade runner/concrete jungles, not many parks or greenery, they drain the hell out of me. Vietnam is like an extension of Guangxi province and Thailand is turning into a hybrid west/Disney land style Asia haha

Without a valid visa (ease of access) then all of the following points are pointless. There are plenty of horror stories about Vietnam's visa bureaucracy. Many people have to pay thousands of dollars in penalties. Yeah it may look nice and attractive but Vietnam's bureaucracy can leave you with a bitter taste.

I think your views reflect your personal experience in Saigon only. It's not really possible to refer to "Vietnam" or "Cambodia" when all you really mean are Saigon and Phnom Penh. In addition there are life quality aspects that someone could reject in Saigon, such as noise, crowding, congestion, everything that some of us can't stand in Los Angeles and New York which don't exist in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. Just my two cents!

Cambodia is an '' infant '' in terms of its economic development compared to Vietnam; which has been developing and modernizing for the last plus forty years since the fall of Saigon in 1975; alongside the KOC has only seen a steady development over the last twenty years !! But the KOC will '' Catch up '' with the rest of its ASEAN neighbors in a near future !! I think it is quite '' subjective '' to give preferences to one Asian Capital City over another, based on one's personal experience !! So based on my experience, Saigon city is overcrowded and traffic jams combined with air pollution are very unpleasant to be living in !!! I am just glad to be back in the US !!

Retirement in Cambodia over 55 in the easiest it could possibly be ! -- Vietnam SUCKS by comparison. They don't want you there - neither does Thailand by comparison when comparing ease + the expense. > Cambodia may be a bit more cost daily - but - that cost is offset substantially by the BS visa runs & expenses !!! (( ? )) + The Khmer people are so much friendlier and more welcoming - they speak English - and they even accept the USD. -- To me - it's a "no brainer" in my mind. The icing on the cake (for me) comes from living in Siem Reap - and not PP !!!!! = A significant amount cheaper w/o a loss of essentials or desirables. Only loss seems to be chaos congestion & pollution for the most part. A gem of a city - beautiful and cheap. > Even a cheap 1 hour flight to Bangkok for fun or quality affordable world class medical services ! - - - If that's not enough - maybe the 50 cent beer will do it for ya - with international food choices ??? Many claim to live reasonably well on about as little as $800/mo. for a single person. Not extravagant certainly - but - comfortable. Some others say they require more like $1200/mo. with pool & gym access & maybe cook less. 🙏

Live in Ho Chi Minh for 8 years but never been to Cambodia but surprised it is more money to live there .Frankly speaking have zero interest in going to Cambodia just because of the horror stories of crime in Cambodia I hear about .I know people that have been robbed at gun point in Cambodia something that has never happened in Vietnam that would be a major story .
Vietnam is bad for snatch and grab and it doesn’t matter where you are it can happen and no way to tell who will do it .
    So basically take precautions
Once someone on a brand new Vespa wearing very nice clothes tried to steal my gold necklace but I was fast enough to prevent (so I don’t wear such douche bag stuff anymore)
The only other time they stole my wife’s purse it happens so fast there is no way to know they drove so fast .
However we were expecting it its Vietnam and it happens so my wife wears her purse over one shoulder so it’s easy for them to take .NEVER put purse strap around neck they will drag you down the street.Once they took off with her purse all they got was a old purse ,chewing gum ,cheap rain jacket and some wet naps .
We were prepared we expect it , its going to happen so don’t put anything in a,purse you can’t afford to lose .
All our money and phone are in my FRONT pocket and nobody going in there will live to tell about it
Overall Vietnam is EXTREMELY safe the people are wonderful there is no where in the world I would rather live
As for Cambodia sounds like they are going up the ladder with development so perhaps maybe one day I will travel there
