I share all my monthly costs and answer questions such as:
- How much does it cost to live in Cambodia?
- How much does it cost to rent an apartment in Cambodia?
- How much does do I pay for utilities like electricity in Cambodia?
- How much does mobile phone data cost in Cambodia?
- How much does a valid Visa for Cambodia cost?
I also cover my daily food costs here in Phnom Penh and take you on a tour of some of my favourite coffee shops and restaurants in Toul Kourk, Phnom Penh.
In general, the cost of living in Cambodia is very affordable. Anyone who is working online and making half decent money can afford to live in Cambodia very comfortably indeed.

Dave in Cambodia lives with his girlfriend in a $50 a month apartment in Siem Reap. Simple but clean place. When I was living there my apartment was more expensive.... $100 a month before electric and water. Nice clean simple apartment with large washroom, with shower, small kitchen, nice living room/bedroom. Gated walled building (all the tenants have a key for the gate) and security guard. Kept electric cost low by not having a TV, and not turning the airconditioning on. I used fan only, and cross circulation between windows.
I really can't see spending hundreds of dollars on an apartment.
Welcome to my country 🇰🇭🙏
Thank you. So kind. Are you in PP?
Hey mike great video my wife and I are actually flying to Cambodia tomorrow we love yer vids very helpful and informative
Glad to hear it mate, thanks for the comment and enjoy Cambodia!
Hope u enjoy Cambodia
Hi Mike. Nice vid. The one thing I would say is that you've got expats in Siem Reap/ S'ville doing OK on around $700 a month. It all depends on your standard of living. A room with Aircon and a small kitchen can be had in Siem Reap for around $100 a month. If you're happy to drink cheap beer, go for walks, watch DVD's and eat street food/wok it up at home, you can easily do that on the budget I just mentioned. Obviously, your lifestyle is a lot better and PP is a lot pricier anyway.
But there's something there for every budget.
Sure, I appreciate I could have reduced my spending if I been on a tighter budget. I barely never cooked in my two months in Cambodia!! Could most definitely reduced food costs.
@@mysonjimmy1337 Thanks for that honest input. Stay safe.
@@livinginphuketthailand im moving to cambodia in a month your place seemed really nice but what do you think like $280-350 get?
Very true. SR much cheaper and more beautiful.
Indonesia especially Bandung is way way cheaper. Apartment rent cost is way cheaper. 70 US $ / month will get you a nice apartment room in Bandung.
The city is so vivid with vibrant roof tops and clear blue skies.
Looks like a drawing
New sub here, Mike. Really enjoyed your informative video. I currently am living in the U.S. and waiting for things to settle down before visiting Vietnam and the Philippines. Now you've put Cambodia on my radar. Your condo and its price is amazing and totally suited for my needs as well as being way under my budgeted needs. Unfortunately, I am sure housing prices will rise with the easing of the C*vid restrictions.
Yes I was In Thailand recently. It seems like Thailand was one of the last south east Asian places to lower restrictions. It has improved! I am sure if you go now it would be an ideal time I am sure.
Cheers from Wisconsin! I am going to Cambodia January 12th hope to see more Americans and smiling faces!
Beautiful view! Thanks for showing us!
Thanks man, good video. Best breakdown I have seen.
That's a really cool apartment, Mike and what a spot for the morning coffee :)
Many things have change there sense 2002, back then there was not to much to do, or very many places to live. Nice presentation!
Wow, such a great breakdown video from Cambodia! I'm originally from Cambodia, but now I living in US. Keep it up!
Great, if I wanted to purchase housing, how do I? Thank you

Interesting ! Love the video so much !
lovely video have a nice time in Cambodia
Good video Mike I have been to Cambodia 7 times in the 2 years before covid in particular siem reap. I hope to live there with my wife
My place in Thailand one minute from the beach in Hua Hin is comparable. $400 total
Hua hin is a lovely spot, the foods options off the charts, just done a month there
Several basic points needed. What is the length of your lease? How many months deposit? How much is the KwH electricity rate? Some places are $0.20, others 0.25, or 0.30, that's a huge difference. You're on a high floor, pounded by the sun all day, will easily cost twice that to cool the place when it gets red hot starting later in March lasting until late in the year. Only December through February are even slightly cool weather.
Coffee at my little place in a mountain town is $2.50. A usual breakfast with coffee here is $10 with tip. But a diner will be more like $ 18.
Wayyy Kool.
Thx a Ton for the Post.
that balcony is something else!
This is very nice, Mike! I went up to the rooftop of this building and the view is awesome. My friend own a condo unit here. It a very nice place in Toulkork. By the way, I got my unlimited mobile data at only $5 per month.
what mobile service provider did you pick?
Excellent info, Mike. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Thank you
I recommend Malaysia. Amazing food
Nice view from ur condo
Greetings from Prey Nokor Sài Gòn city ❤️
Gorgeous apartment but im so scared of heights that I actually get anxiety (yes I know its totally psychological) with the balcony/roof shots so I'd have to get a lower apartment. You've got it made!
Worked for a company that required some travel & they had a rule not to get a hotel room above the 3rd floor for fire safety reasons. More difficult rescue above 3rd floor & better chance of surviving a jump from 3rd floor then a higher jump.
@@johnholbrook6042 I'm with you....I'd aim for the bushes 🤣
@@johnholbrook6042 Good point. Here in America most fire trucks rescue ladders don't extend past the 7th floor. So that is my limit! 😆
As a local, i suggest you cook yourself. You would be amazed how much you will save, plus you might surprise yourself with your own cooking x'D Your current food cost per day is still expensive to me. Check out the food app and you will see plenty of good deals too. Cheers, mate!
100% agree with you. I live (food wise) on $5 a day buying at the local market and cooking at my rented condo. Rice, veggies and fruit. I catch my own fish as I am a keen angler. If I have a good day I barter a fish or two for chicken or pork. I am also talking about Malacca, Malaysia which is more expensive than Cambodia. Rent is $200 pm, tap water $8, internet $9, bottled water $10 and electric around $30. I mainly use a fan which I prefer to air con. Yes, $407 all in PER MONTH. On arrival I get a free 90 day tourist visa. I also don't drink alcohol or smoke.
I love your condo! This was a great video!
Glad you liked it!!
Hey Mike, been following your movements since you got to KH. Thank you for the quick video updates...I've lived in Phnom Penh before and will be heading back next month. TK is a great area to be in! Also planning to go to back to Vietnam in April, so looking forward to seeing you go ahead of us...:) take care.. PS there's another Indian restaurant - The curry King and many good chill cafes down street 337 close to a Bayon ..
Nice one, thanks for the recommendation. I'll check that area out for sure! Cheers ✌
@@livinginphuketthailand If your a food fiend, try going on a trip to Kampot. I've just returned and the place seems to get better all the time. Particularly the food. I saw many Indian/curry places, but didn't try them. Order the pork dumpling soup at ecran restaurant, for 3USD you won't be disappointed.
I loved my trips to Vung Tau in Vietnam and was going to make that my new holiday destination. But covid stuffed all of that up. They are going a bit the same way as Thailand did and only want tourists. They are making it more difficult to live there. Even when I knew people here who went on a visa run and had a flat in Vietnam, who couldn't get back in due to covid restrictions, I was having arguments with locals saying the place was open. When last I looked you had to organize a business visa to get in. I'm not up to date now though, what's the latest, do you know?
In Asia especially in Cambodia the higher the apartment usually the higher rent especially with the elevator. The rent probably is cheaper if you want a lower floor.
@@peterkhieu I've been stuck in elevators twice in my 20's working for a bank in Australia. Hundreds of people knew were were stuck in the lift. On both occasions it took about half an hour to get us out. Lifts in Cambodia are quite small and make me nervous. Worse still, I've never seen anyone with an elevator company name on their shirt in this country.
I love your UA-cam video about Cambodia make me want to live in Cambodia.
Great explanation....
enjoy the presentation and I'm thinking about moving to Southeast Asia whether it be the Philippines Cambodia or Vietnam and I really enjoyed your breakdown on your cost of living I will be reaching out to you soon and again thank you for your presentation

It is more expensive than Thailand in general. The beers medical costs and taxis seem less than Thailand!
Thank you for sharing this video
Hey Mike, informatinve video, I am comming to Cambodia on 5th March from Bangkok.
I just watched your other video and contact with Prang to manage my visa extension, this makes so much easy. thanks again Mike.
What a great deal bro! I pay pretty much the same for just a single room here in New Zealand...
Wow! Time to move to Asia? 😄🙏
Nice information bro
i love your apartment!
You give me hope. That's exactly the lifestyle I want. I found slices of that in Thailand but I was only on an extended vacation. Living somewhere is much different that visiting on vacation. But seems like Phnom Pehn is more laid back than Bangkok. Although I loved Bangkok and other places I saw in Thailand, felt like Bangkok was crowded everywhere I went. I love how much space is in the coffee shop and restaurant you went to in the this video. There wasn't a ton of people in these establishments even though you are in a big city. Very nice.
Thanks for sharing
Well I'm glad that you enjoying Cambodia I've done many trips and from my experience it definitely doesn't compare to Thailand.
I'm a motorcycle enthusiast and the roads are pretty bad, drivers are a little bit insane.
Maybe your just soft Mike.
@@bbll3090 maybe!!!
@@mikefreeriderAsiait is hectic but once they finish their main infrastructure project which consists of the airports, seaports, bridges, and housing, they’ll start looking more into public transportation (busses and metro rails) and repaving the roads. They could also enforce the traffic laws more as a lot of Cambodian deaths or motorcycle and other vehicular accidents.
Cambodia looks very nice.
excellent
Good video
Great video.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Prices really must have gone up. I was in Phnom Phen in 2017. Had a night out with dinner (1,5 USD) happy hour beer (50 cents) and tuk tuk back to the hotel (2 USD one way).

Nice dear thx
Very good video. Subscribed. Maybe an extended visit when the wife and I are retired in a couple of years. Thanks ❤👍+1.
Thank you Mike. I like your videos, thorough. How do you use the phone or should I say do you convert SIM card to my current phone while in Cambodia?
Dude, that was a really good video. Image quality also superb. You seem like you are doing great. Happy for you. Just one thing that kinda bugged me a bit. I think the Cambodian currency is pronounced ri-el. I know some folks say reel but your channel is informational as well as educational, so it would be better to get tourists/foreigners to get the basics right. I noted that you handed the $100 note and received the change with your right hand. This is the proper way to do it. It drives me crazy when foreigners use their left hand to give and receive. This is incredible rude but the locals won’t say it though. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing local knowledge
I'm Cambodian, I'll take it hand over fist. I'll take any I can, doesn't bother me. We I'm Cambodian american't.
Thanks
I found in China coffee was extremely expensive. This is reasonable. You could probably get a similar meal and two coffees in south africa for same price!
Good coffee in Indonesia only cost you 0,3 US $. Apartment rent 70 US $ / month in outer city of Bandung.
On that budget I could have a condo in Pattaya with a beach close by and view. I think it's a little bit expensive.
I agree. Cambodia is actually more expensive than Thailand, if.yojnwant to live a life with western comforts.
the high usd dosnt help retirees moving to cambodia since cambodia uses usd, u would be better off moving to thailand and having almost twice as much money with the baht,
Honestly, I was expecting food to be cheaper, I've spent three months in Malayisa, and i think you could have the same type of food for half the price.
Thanks for the vid, sir! Very thorough and informative. I know it wasn't the topic of the video, but what about safety and crime rates. As a foreigner, do you feel safe while out and about?
Yes, I felt safe, however I was also conscious and smart about where yo use my phone etc . Another UA-cam friend has his phone stolen.
Nice video mate. I'm surprised how modern and affordable your condo is. I recently spent a couple of months in Indonesia, mostly in Jakarta, and I'd say that day to day living expenses are similar in JKT to what you said.
How do you get on with speaking? How wide spread is spoken English there?
Also, are there any swanky malls there?
Level of English is OK but not as widely spoken as Thailand in my experience. Yes there's malls with Gucci, Armani and all the big brands if that's what you're looking for.
@@livinginphuketthailand Actually I go to malls to chat to women. That is the best place to meet girls, certainly in the Philippines and Indonesia
Nobody in TH speaks English 🤣 and when they do its at level of 3yo
@@hellouser5498 So what! It's TH not the US or UK. I appreciate any locals who try to speak English.

Believe me, the concern about crime is real, but relatively tiny , next to the issue of noise.( I've been here 11 years).
Is Cambodia noisy like Vietnam?
You certainly get a good bang for your buck there. The condo looks good especially for a single or couple. How long is your lease? Landlord sounds quite reasonable.
Great apt rate!
My Family And Me Goes Sim Reap There Was alot Of expensive hotel So My Dad Call His Friend goes His Hotel Like a Wood House a Room Super Nice Like Natures On Khmer New Year Well We Saved Alot Of Money Xd
Amazing how much a country can change in 15 yrs
Hey @Mike...great communicative and helpful video. What do you think about a graphic designer moving to Cambodia's Capital? Would there be opportunities? Ireland's cost of living is just ridiculous and there are no houses to be had anywhere. Seriously considering moving to that beautiful place
Hi Nikolay, not sure about that tbh. If you are looking for job opportunities, I sense that PP may not be the best place. Vietnam has more to offer with regards career advancement etc.
@@livinginphuketthailand yeah? I'm not even bothered about advancement just quality of life. But I shall do some research. Thanks Mike
@@Weebay_213 you best setting up remote digital work contracts from the country you live in now like your home country, then you will get your good income, then live in Cambodia etc on a better achievable lifestyle. Getting local work in Cambodia not the best way pay wise unless it's a special contract, with a international company, that type a job is only available in Thailand but those are rare in Cambodia.
@@stephenpavy2501 thanks Stephen
@@stephenpavy2501 that is difficult to set up in Wisconsin USA. But I appreciate the advice and heads up on the idea. Also thanks,I figured the income for Cambodians jobs are lower than most westerners are willing to settle for. Thanks for clarifying!

Really enjoyed your video Mike. Very informative and positive. One question, your e-visa will expire at the end of the month right? I’m sure you have plans to stay longer there, how will you do that?
Thanks Ben, glad it was useful. I left Cambodia over 1 year ago. 2 months in Phnom Penh was more than long enough!! In no hurry to return.
Western tourism has driven up prices in Thailand. Therefore another location MUSNN be cheap
Thank you for quoting in dollars
Great vid mike how’s the language barrier ? Easy or do u find it hard to communicate with the locals
Hi Rudy, not as many people speak English here as in Thailand. Plus, I don't speak ANY Khmer so it can be tricky at times. But Google Translate is always at hand so I manage!
I've been told the opposite, that the english here in Cambodia is better than that of Thailand and Vietnam - though I haven't had first-hand experience of either.
@@nyob4938 me too, I was quite surprised to hear that but again probably depends on the area, in Phuket English is widely spoken but in isaan it’s not but I was surprised to hear that
Cash source, valid visa, route out. Hostel to allow time to establish decent apartment of not pre booked. Settled, agent, long term visa, enjoy.
Did you live in Thailand previously? Maybe 6 months to a year ago I watched another video of yours where you could've been living in Thailand?
I lived in Thailand from 2004-2006. During this period I did visit Cambodia - Phnom Penh, Siem Reap. To me, Cambodia was very eye opening in terms of how rural it was and underdeveloped. Seems like a lot has changed since then according to your video and others I've seen. I wonder what the main differences are between the two today?
This is actually quiet expensive. Comparable to Slovenia in Europe.
Welcome to Cambodia
Thanks!
Great video
Although I do think the monthly $ 800
Eating out could be trimmed back a fair bit.
right, and actually if you can try the local food which is sold in street stalls, the cost will be cut way more than that. I lived in Phnom Penh for 4 years and left in 2019. I bought breakfast and lunches from local restaurants (very local not with the fancy decor) literally everyday. A toasted sandwich sold in the street costs USD1 while USD1.5 for one plate of fried noodles or bbq pork with rice plate, and around USD4-5 for a lunch. There's a condition that your stomach is open to the local food Lol One comment mentioned the health insurance which is a very good point, you don't want to get sick there because you might worry about the cost without company benefits as well as the quality of treatment.
Hi Mike, could you please let me know of any reasonably priced rooms or apartments in Phnom Penh not to far away from 136 street or about 10 -15 minutes walk away. Thanks ever so much, keep up the good work.
@Untak Sang Ok thanks for that.
@Untak Sang A big ask, but do you know the name and number of this place?

Is it possible to find a job in Siam Reap teaching Elgish or doing something else?
You forgot to cover health insurance which I assume is a large bill…
"Gio in the Philippines" use Nomad Travel insurance. Price varies by age. age 65-69 is $158/month and I believe it covers up to 30 days of living in the U.S.A.
Same price for living outside Berlin in a small 50m2 condo with Health insurance, Energy, Beer and everything else …1400€ it’s not so cheap
2 Questions Mike...
Q1) With these condos, does the aircon keep it cool in the upper (sleeping) area or is it hot?
Q2) Is it close the the main CBD ?
Must be hot af without ac on all the time

Thanks for subbing!
They need to work on garbage pick up, especially in a metropolitan area.
I totally agree!
The electric building rate isn't necessarily the government rate. Could be 1/3 of what you're paying. As you say it's not much & that's what they count on. That's why I like a low rent place that includes electric. Internet & water are minor expenses. I prefer not to have a service condo/apartment. Other expenses are fine. 👍
Excellent videos 👍🏻🙏
