  • Hey guys! Today we take the Canon R5 and the RF 85mm f1.2 DS to take some random stranger's portraits. The RF 85mm f1.2 literally DEMOLISHED the background... the bokeh is truly incredible with this lens!

Digging your 85mm shots. I'm glad it's not exclusively used for portraits, as shown on your other videos. (also, I'm your 1K subscriber!!! haha)

Všeč mi je tvoj simpatičen pristop do neznanih ljudi na ulici. Ja R5 in objektiv 85mm f/1,2 deluje res odlično. Ali ti je bolj priročen / všeč od Canon R3? Hvala za odlične video posnetke in razlage!

I’m considering this lens for my R5 as well. I already own the RF 70 to 200 2.8, so it’s a big debate in my head if it’s worth it for travel and street photography of locals in the different places I visit.
My biggest concern is the razor thin DOF with the 1.2 create an environment, where if your focus is off ever so slightly, you could have an out of focus face or otherwise. I just went to the camera store to try it out in person and I noticed that if the subject wasn’t looking me dead in the eye, the focus would snap onto their cheek and the entire image looked relatively out of focus thanks to the 1.2.
If I’m not getting people to pose is this lens even viable or should I just stick to the 70-200 2.8?

The 85 1.2 doesn't miss. Just make sure the autofocus settings are appropriate

I had a somewhat similar issue too, and I found the only way to ensure focus accuracy was to stop down (which what’s the point) or step back a lot and have the subject smaller in the frame which I didn’t like either. I’m sure it’s a learning curve and you’ll get it right eventually but with a huge price tag it was kinda not great to have to retrain my brain and move at a slower pace at a shoot.

I just bought the RF 85 1.2 lens and I’m kinda scared of it lol
I’ve never had anything faster than a 2.8, and all the focus systems are lightning fast except for this one so I’m worried about not getting the shot right shooting at 1.2 and having to stop down which seems pointless to then own this lens.
Might have to return it and grab a 70-200, but don’t know if I’m making a mistake doing that.
    Currently own a 24-70 2.8, 100mm macro 2.8, and the epic RF 100-500 7.1.
Do you think training to use the 85 lens is a wise choice, or should I change it out for the more comfortable fit of a 70-200?

Hello! Thanks so much for the comment and the question. Looks like you have a great lineup of lenses. If you do a lot of portraits I would absolutely use the 85mm f1.2. I personally think it is the best, most balanced (bokeh/compression/facial symmetry) lens out there for portraits. If you get the 70-200 f2.8 you would be overlapping with your 100mm prime (although the prime may be SLIGHTLY sharper). If you have no use for the 85 f1.2 I would consider selling the 100mm f2.8 and buying the 70-200. That way you have excellent focal length coverage. 24-70, 70-200, 100-500! How are you likening that 100-500? I’ve been wanting to pick one up! Cheers!

Well I wound up returning the RF 85mm and purchasing the RF 70-200, and I do not regret that choice at all! This thing is gorgeous, tack sharp, and super fast focusing. It kind of reminds me of a baby version of my RF 100-500 so I’m very happy with it in combo with my RF 24-70.
The RF 100-500 is the greatest lens I’ve ever used when it comes to wildlife and aircraft photography. It just nails the shot super sharp and at the distances I’m shooting it has a ton of smooth bokeh as well. A great example of its fast accurate focus system is when I first took it out of the box and put it on my camera, I managed to find and track the eyeball of a honeybee from many feet away!
The EF macro 100mm I rarely use for portraits simply because I don’t like too much how EF lenses render the image when used side by side with an RF. Yeah it’s sharp and lovely but there’s a weird grittiness to the EF lineup that I never really noticed until I started moving to RF and now I can’t unsee it lol. It’s PHENOMENAL and SHARP for macro photography so I won’t be changing that one to RF anytime soon!

@@MilmidStudios also I would like to add I shoot a ton of different genres: Portrait, Events, Wildlife, Aircraft, and Macro so my lens lineup typically involves zooms as they are worth the money for the flexibility to cover all my interests!

For some reason the first 2 images the skin tone looked yellow. Video was a bit pixelated🤔 Otherwise good job. 👍

Thanks for the feedback! I have to agree with you on the yellow skin tones, will dial that in with my preset for next time.
As far as the pixelation, try change the quality setting to the highest 4k setting and let me know of that corrects it. Cheers! 💯📸
