BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 17th year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

Anyone can build a house with a large budget and countless people to do the work but what this couple accomplished is remarkable. Wishing Richard to remain healthy and the family to thrive in this home. Beautiful photos.

This couple has taught me that if the love is there nothing is impossible they’re inspiring. Mind you their budget was very tight ! But look at that masterpiece 🙌🏿

Now, this was fantastic. Just watched another episode of GD where a couple spent 800K and the place looked like crap. This place is not only nicely and beautifully done but must be one of the best value for money ever. Congrats!

What an inspiring story of not only vision and construction, but of triumph over adversity, determination, loyalty, love and creativity. A wonderful family. As a photographer myself, I love the images taken of the course over time. These are technically great, artistically engaging and tell a totally engaging story.
Total respect and hope for a long and happy life together for the whole family. They deserve nothing less.

A remarkable vision with a remarkable effort. I am in awe at the dedication of Richard and Felicia. People of weaker character would have given it up following Richard's illness. Richard didn't allow the passage of time, fate or a limited budget to stop him. He just ploughed on and Felicia stood by him, with him and put her faith in him. A couple that deserve and can command respect. Whilst not completely finished, the results speak for themselves and it is a beautiful home that will just continue to improve. If anything, it not being finished is probably the most suitable scenario for Richard.

Fabulous. Much more so than the Kent conversion. A home built with the hard work, smiles and tears of a lovely family.

This project (I get the sense that this space will continue to evolve) really encapsulates the two different personalities. Richard's meticulous nature and Felicia's eye for detail. It's very rare for the two to live in harmony. Really speaks to their appreciation and love for one another.

Having been in little Maya's position many years ago, living through your parents attempting to build their dream home and enduring a much diminished quality of life for many years as a result can really suck.
Incredible job keeping this within budget though, hopefully they get to wnjoy the fruits of their labour for generations to come

I don't agree that her quality of life was diminished because they were living in a small flat. Many people, if not most people, live in small spaces and their lives are not terrible

This is one of the best episodes of GD!! I will always be rooting for this family. Their bond is also so amazing! I pray they have very long lives in this house and continue to make a lot of amazing memories here. God bless them.
By the way, is it just me, but Maya reminds me a lot of Trixie from the TV series, Lucifer.

After watching this I feel kind of stupid having spent close to $1M on renovation of a house which is still not finished and nowhere as cool as this one. Glad it worked so well for them in the end.

Great example of determination but I can't help thinking, why does it have to be so big?
If the house was like one third smaller, it would still be a spacious home for 3 persons.

The retaining walls must have supported the thrust before the concrete ceiling was poured on top. Ceiling could "be one" with the walls due to steel bars being left from the walls pouring in order to connect the two elements, but the structural tasks of the two were necessarily separated and so they are after. Nice project though!

I understand your concern. However, from what I can see from the video and the still images that document those years, there is no evidence that Mia wanted for attention, love and affection. On the contrary, she seems obviously engaged with, and delighted in, the project and gained a lot that the children of those who take the easy life may not learn: purpose, creativity, application, determination, endurance.
This is not an off-the-shelf situation for the excellent reason you would not be seeing it: the series is, after all, called Grand Designs, and with that comes the inevitable expectation of demands, challenge and commitment.
What I saw demonstrated here was not just the story of a challenging build, but of a family that held together through extreme challenges and that is far more character-building than taking an easy road. As someone once said, we are shaped in the shadows so we can shine in the light...

Completely amazing story, dedication and effort but why oh why do they want a house that is >400m2 for three people. It is absurd. There is such a waste of space. The breached wall is such a statement in a lovely location. Mature trees on one side, fields along one elevation and all for less than budget, though not finished.

I thought it to be amazing to and what a dedication. would have added lots of sky lights in the roof to make it more light inside though But they can always do it later. also wonder about the isolation ....
