    With the scotty 388, I set the hook on a bite in the rod holder just by raising front of rod . The problem I had with them was when I had big fish on that take off or go straight down . I have had issues trying to get the rod out of holder with the fish pressure .
    The r5 has done much better for me with that issue.

    Sweet demo, now I see how those work. I never looked that closely at them but now I think I might need a couple of those for sure!

    I've been wanting a rod holder like this for years! I use the Orca for my lake trolling downrigger rod, but that holder is quite big and clunky for a lightweight freshwater setup. This one is the perfect replacement, will definitely buy one for the upcoming season.

    For trolling on the ocean waters I like the Scotty "CAN" style of rod holders.I have no real experience with freshwater fishing. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all from Southern Vancouver Island!

    I've found that as long as you're standing, you can quickly remove a rod from a Scotty holder in one, smooth, forward & up motion. Even in the salt water when mooching salmon. This new holder would negate the need to slide the rod forward, but you still need to lift it straight up - best done from a standing position. When seated however, I often fought with getting the rod out of the holder - especially when it was a large fish putting pressure on the rod (or a snag when trolling). If you're seated in a kayak, almost level with the rod holder and reaching forward to grab the rod, it's a real fight to get it clear of the holder. The new Scotty holder might alleviate part of that frustration, but not all of it. I found my solution with the STEALTH rod holders out of the U.S.. They use a flexible rubber pouch that snaps shut to secure your rod, but instantly releases when you grab it - from almost any angle. I've got them on my Hobie kayak, my 10 ft plastic boat and my 14' tinny. When trolling, I like my rod holders well forward, so I can watch the rod-tips, but that means a long, leaning low & forward reach to grab the rod from the side of the holder. The Stealth holders allow me to do that, without the drama!

    Rod, thanks for the demo and info, I have one, but haven't mounted a rod in it. I have the Berkeley rod holder which work in a very similar fashion to the R-5, I would love to see a head to head comparison, perhaps before I hit the lakes and miss having two R-5's if they are better. The Berkeley rod hold can be a bit loose on the fly rod. But it does hold, and like the R-5 doesn't hold a rod in transit securely. That straight up lift rules no matter the brand. Thanks, R

      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Rob, I had the Berkley ones years ago too actually. The concept is pretty similar, the difference is that the Berkley models are definitely a lot more flimsy. The R-5 makes me feel like the rods are sitting in there comfortably, and wouldn't get damaged. It's also a bit bigger to accommodate some of the bigger rod and reel setups which the Berkley wouldn't be able to do.

    Nice video. I have 2 of these and they only work on the right side of the boat. If I run them on the left side of the boat my rod's jump out. Literally. I've had to reel in all my planer boards double back and go retrieve my pole.

      Thanks for watching. That doesn't sound right. I have never had a problem with them on either side of my boat. You may want to phone Scotty and see if they can troubleshoot for you.

    Question would the shamano slx xt be good for the vedder and also wear do you get your fishing equipment

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +2

      The SLX’s are great reels, would work perfectly for bass and trout but a bit on the small side for most species in the Vedder. It’d work fine for coho but a Curado or Tranx 200 would be more ideal.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  Рік тому

      Yep it should work for sure, especially with the baitcasting setups. For spinning setups, I think my preference is still the spinning/baitcasting rod holders that Scotty makes.

    Thanks for the demo Rod, these look great. Would they work with larger higher profile reels used for sturgeon fishing such as Penn International. If not, do you know if Scotty has plans on putting out some for larger reels?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +2

      I hope so. Dave Murphy and I were joking about this awhile ago, that maybe an R-6, or R-7 will be developed for the slightly bigger reels. I have a couple of bigger Shimano low profile baitcasting reels which don't fit well in these. One rod holder can't fit all reel sizes of course. I'll make these recommendations to Scotty and see what happens.

    What type of line did you use on your baitcaster for your deep water chironomid technique? Could you spool a baitcaster with full sink fly line?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Pete, you definitely shouldn't put the fly line on the baitcasting reel, that's just asking for trouble. For my baitcaster, I spool it with 10lb PowerPro braided line. That's equivalent to 4lb test mono so it's thin and sensitive, perfect for detecting those bites deep down. I have a detailed video on that entire setup at: ua-cam.com/video/eB6QIKGsedE/v-deo.html

      @@FishingwithRod salmon and trout fishing at the vedder chanal and Fraser

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +1

      A low profile baitcasting reel like a Shimano Curado 200 or Tranx 200/300 would be good for the Vedder River. It however would not be ideal for the Fraser River, but not that it matters as the Fraser River has very few salmon fishing opportunities left.

      @@FishingwithRod On the base, at least mine and in Scotty instructions, it identifies the arrows pointing inboard on the base...hard to see. The scotty guy talks about sliding the post so it clicks past a ...'notch...now you can turn it....notch is hard to see on the inside of the tube. on the holder there is another arrow pointing inboard. It doesn't seem to matter because once you get past the click when inserting the post, you turn the holder however you want. In the cradle of the of the holder there is another arrow pointing inboard right next to scotty. I used this arrow to set the direction of the holder.
      This is just how my set up works.

    Rod I love your videos, but every time you say spin casting it makes me cringe. Those are spinning rods/reels. Spincasting are the closed face reels that go in top of the rod and are closed face. (Think little kid reels)
