Tbf, this is what happens when there’s a lot of tracks in a game. They had to compose for cutscenes too. In past games, they either had no music in cutscenes or had music they repeated for cutscenes. But there’s a lot more. In interviews, Nomura told Ishimoto to do the most amount of revisions. Another video has pointed out that Ishimoto is recycling a lot of his music and music ideas. He used a lot of temp tracks for Neo. The interview made me appreciate Nomura’s hard work even more as a game developer.
Good point. While it's true that KH3 had way more music than any other game - 200 songs, compared to 99 in KH1 and a bit over 100 in KH2 - it also had way more musicians, with about 13 people working on the score. On top of a half dozen arrangers, we had people like Shotaro Shima and Yoshitaka Suzuki brought in to make new compositions in addition to the usual Shimomura-Sekito-Ishimoto trio. But then again, the development cycle of KH3 was notoriously rough, so I bet that contributed to it as well
@@Aid1043you know your stuff! I happen to know this from looking at the track list. It tells you the composer and the arranger of each track. But I don’t tend to mention the other composers because they aren’t the main ones and Nomura doesn’t mention them. It’s like me mentioning Toby Fox in Pokemon Sword and Shield. The track list is confusing though, because Shimomura is listed first in Dark Domination and in Forze Finale. But I think that’s because they use her music. Dark Domination is at least 70% Shimomura’s work from Rage Awakened and Destati. Ishimoto feels like the biggest problem because his music has gotten lazier and lazier over the time. Just listen to his Dissidia tracks. I’ve been a Square Enixer for decades. Only issue with Sekito in 3 is that none of his tracks, almost none of them are stand out. His tracks in 3D were standout.
how did you get access to my kh3 script lmfao these discoveries killed me when learning more about about kh3's music ;_; It's like... sekito and ishimoto: develop your own sound!! KH isn't a recycle bin for you!!
lmao. I'll give Sekito a pass for the victory theme, since Echoes of Mana came out after KHUX... but honestly that just raises more questions. How deep does this melody recycling go?
well, to remix music of a fanchince that is acutally features in the game seams like a good idea to me. and most of the other songs, where from square enix's IPs anyway. so it's all golden in my ears. the last one was the was a supprise tho
Admittedly, despite learning about this info, I still like a lot of the songs. Flags of Fury fucking slaps especially. Also, I know Ishimoto isn't the first person to do something like this. Toby Fox has like 4 or 5 versions of the same song "Dummy!"
@@handsoaphandsoap Actually, it was first composed for his old EarthBound Halloween hack. He wanted to use Megalomania from Live A Live, but he couldn't get it to worm. He later worked on some of the soundtrack or Homestuck and had a variation of Megalovania in it.
Oof, maaan I wasn't a fan of Dark Domination, but always gave Ishimoto the benefit of the doubt saying "Well, at least his other tracks are generally pretty good and more creative" and this video kinda ruined that lol Honestly, even now though, I can still forgive a lot of that, but it still just BAFFLES me that they had him create the FINAL BOSS song instead of Yoko Shimomura.
Actually, dark domination was made by yoko shinomura, she said so in an interview, it was the boss theme for the amsem/xemnas/xehanort fight that wasn't made by yoko
@@arzfan29 No, that's false and was a result of mistranslation before. She said that Dark Domination is a combination of her original music and Ishimoto's new music. We already have comprehensive official credits from the OST. Even without looking at the official credits, anyone familiar with the musical styles of the composers can already tell that it's Ishimoto.
im thinking. maybe they might have been overpaid for these considering theyre remixes . the first monsters inc one gets a pass because its a remix of something actually in the movie
ok the monsters inc one feels unneeded here. it's adapting a song from the movie? are you gonna call out shimomura for all the disney tracks she "recycled" too lmao anyway I'm not really against the other composers reworking their songs from one game into another as long as it fits the vibe. part of the problem i think is they only did so bc development was apparently really rushed in some areas (worst offender is easily Dark Domination using Rage Awakened's motifs like what the fuck) the other part of the problem (for me anyway) is that ishimoto Can be a good composer (see the entre twewy body of work) but if you listen to a lot of his work on kh3, Dissidia, type-0 et al it all starts to just blend together. he loves to just write a bunch of long drawn out chord progressions with very little melody in the mix and call it a day. maybe sekito recycled a couple of his more upbeat tracks but at least theyre fun to listen to, they don't drone on and on and on. that piano line goes hard af
Totally, the Monstropolis one is an outlier - I threw it in there just to share it, since it's a cool reference and not one a lot of people know about. Adding to the idea of rushed development, Sekito said in an interview that a few KH3 tracks were just polished up versions of unused Dream Drop Distance songs, which I guess isn't all too surprising. I'm happy we got as much as we did, and if Sekito had to recycle tracks to fill in the gaps, at least he made them fit in with the rest of the soundtrack To this day, I'm still *shocked* that "Dual Hearts" was allowed in KH3 in its current state. No other song is so obviously rushed and has so many compositional mistakes (misaligned rhythms, clashing chords, accidental percussion notes - what can't Ishimoto do?). I just hope Ishimoto gets everything figured out before KH4, assuming that he's returning
@@Aid1043ok that's fair. i'll admit i didn't know that monstropolis one before this vid either lmao. my initial hostility was just bc someone linked this vid in a server describing it as pointing out examples of "self-plagiarism" so i assumed you were claiming that too before properly checking lol. my bad on that and dual hearts kinda flew under the radar from me, i mostly just thought it was neat vanitas got a regular version of his theme like other characters have, that wasn't just a battle theme. but listening to it in isolation just now and WOW you're right that shit was thoroughly unpolished lmao. i am getting the sense that they're taking their time with kh4's development now that there's less expectation riding on it i guess so, despite my issues with ishimoto's writing i think we'll be ok going forward.
i feel like im in the extreme minority who actually loves these songs even more because of this . i always love when artists or composers remix or sample themselves and their own work . hearing a song in a game , loving it , then playing an entirely different game from a different series and hearing the same song and loving it as well , looking it up and finding out its the same person who wrote the original song is just cool to me . is it lazy ¿ a bit yea , more lazy than writing a new piece , but they still wrote a new rendition , changed things around , changed keys and melodies , etc rather than just reusing the same exact render of the song . ive never felt like they were out of place in the soundtrack either , they may have originated from other series but still felt like kingdom hearts to me
This definitely explains why the KH3 soundtrack lacks a lot of the recognizable sound of the first games. Like call the old overworks tracks “on the nose” (using Under the Sea for Atlantica) or whatever but at least they were distinct, in KH3 a lot of the overworld themes blend together in a bad way
Damn. I always hated those tracks from KH3 even before knowing it wasn't Shimomura... Now I hate them even more... Why couldn't she compose every ost like before ? Or at least they could have rearranged the Disney original ost like he's a pirate for potc, or immortals for big hero 6...
Tbf, it’s a lot of music. Also, they have to compose for cutscenes now, too. If she was already splitting it up for BBS and 3D, of course she will do it for 3.

Lmaoooo, the last one, I wasn’t expecting it but I was glad to get the reference. I literally have that weather song saved to my playlist.
Oh wow, thanks for pointing these out, I didn't expect KH3 to have had so much recycled material from outside KH… Thanks for finding that out!
um... mr ishimoto youre paid to compose not rearrange

Ishimoto def has his own sound, Square just makes a TWeWY game every ten years lol
I mean, they did create their own sound. They just used that sound in more than one project. 😂
