Yeah, when I heard 20, I was like "this is WAY too dark and ominous for Weather Channel, this is definitely KH". They want to get your attention, not make you think the world's about to end!
Same for me! The worst part is that I was like, I recognize this so I'm going with KH, but then I figured it could be a fairly common dramatic chord progression so I switched my answer
The most concrete evidence I have for being traumatized by Kingdom Hearts is hearing any kind of gummi ship music and immediately feeling so much rage.
I came into this with limited knowledge of both, and got about 70% right. It was more music theory then anything else; with a few exceptions, the Kingdom Hearts songs were constructed with many different instruments forming different melodies in unison, sometimes creating dissonance with each other in the more combat oriented themes. The Weather Channel, meanwhile, had more basic pieces with bombastic repeating melodies meant to catch your attention. There was only a few that didn't follow that simple formula.
That's how I saw it, yeah. The Weather Channel used generic bombatic pieces and Kingdom Hearts was meant to involve more instrumentation and weave a melody together. Some I already knew, but the ones I didn't, I tried to apply that same logical process to them.
In my case it was mostly a vibe check (minus the two appearances of that one from 2006 that I caught immediately), particularly catching some because they either sounded *too* dark and ominous or too peppy to make sense for Weather Channel, but there was also one where I listened to it and was quickly "this sounds too much like an actual orchestra, there's no way it's Weather Channel" and was spot-on.
Oh 100%, at a certain point I realized that I was less trying to recognize the songs and more looking for notable leitmotifs and key changes that Kingdom Hearts songs all tend to have
it also helps that if you're really familiar with yoko shimomura's style of composing, it becomes a LOT easier to point out her tracks from the rest (i played... a lot of final fantasy 15 which she composed for, and they had at least a handful of kh-reminiscent tracks)
Coded is so underrated imo. Such a good handheld game and a really interesting levelling system. The whole glitch/bug hunting sections I could've done without though but I really do wish more people played it. Now that you've reminded me of its existence I might try it on the Steam Deck
I was almost thrown off, since I've never heard the Coded version of the track, but I love ReCoded and was anticipating the next verse the whole time so I knew it was KH
As an east coaster, one of these Weather Channel songs I am VASTLY familiar with because they always play it for hurricane updates. Missed 2 and they both happened to be composers for KH that were not Yoko Shimomura LOL this was a fantastic video
As someone who played every kh and the mario & luigi games, I'm pretty familiar with shimomura's common instrument choices and what kinds of progressions she favors, so if I didn't recognize it and it didn't sound like her I presumed it was weatherscan. Because of this, its the kh tracks that weren't hers and went out of her norms that tripped me up.
The only song I missed was #9. Considering I don’t play kingdom hearts AND I’m pretty sure I never even touched the weather channel, I’m incredibly pleased. What a fun quiz idea
Song 21 doesn't even sound like something from either Kingdom Hearts OR The Weather Channel. It sounds like something you'd hear in Bendy And The Ink Machine. The fact that it IS Weather Channel music is crazy.
Man, this was really fun to do. Thanks for compiling this. I got three wrong myself, the Rinzler theme, the dream drop distance drop theme, and the Union cross theme. It was challenging but very satisfying. I found that not trying to remember every song in the series, rather remembering what instruments they usually use helped a lot. So when you hear a song using an instrument they never really use, it was probably a weather channel song. The most obvious were the coded one, cause it clearly was a DS midi or something similar sounding, and the weather channel song with bad quality, since KH has clear music everywhere.
Possible Spoiler but one thing that helped me was that Yoko Shimomura usually added more notes in a medley if that make sense, and the weather channel themes usually are a bit more ambient.... Idk how else to describe it
#20 is so iconic to me, that was the first music medal I got in KHuX, I played it over and over again. It's also one of my favorite Melody of Memories levels to play.
The only reason I aced this quiz is because I know the entire soundtrack of every single KH game. If I wasn’t disgustingly obsessed I would have easily failed. And now I need the Weather Channel’s playlist on my itunes
Damn. I was going pretty strong until you dropped a Sonic Adventure 2 track for track 16. I know the quiz said KH or Weather Channel, but I legit was like, "There's no shot this isn't a Sonic the Hedgehog song" LOL Seriously, how did I never know Yoko could compose the greatest Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack of all time? Somebody get this lady to just do every game soundtrack man.
The number one key difference is percussion and instrument choice. Kingdom hearts very rarely uses guitars and is almost never to hard or groovy, like if you could reasonably listen to it at a party, then it's not kingdom hearts. They love their horns and violins, not to big on guitar riffs and drum beats.
19 out of 21. I've never played a KH game (I want to someday). I know just enough about Shimomura's style to recognize it. It also helps having known the 2006 Storm Alert theme ahead of time.
Haha loved the concept. 9 is the only one that tripped me up. But it did that big time! I still can't wrap my head around it NOT being a YS song, it literally has the EXACT same progression and vibe of a vs. Org XIII battle song, it's absolutely insane
DUUUUDE! Im so impressed w/ myself to the point that I knew which songs came from which games and didn't get any of them wrong (except for the Union X song, whoopsie), I was so hype when I guessed the coded track even though im unfamiliar with Coded's music!
Song 19 is what always plays when there’s a hurricane coming and it is the biggest bop of all of these. Used to be prepping the condo I worked at on the Seawall while dancing to it.
I missed #2 #9 and #11 The first union x song really tripped me up. Then the 9 and 11 just straight surprised me, I didnt know the weather channel could go that hard!?
What the hell? It genuinely sounds like 8 and 9 are just different sections of the same song. They have the same fast tempo piano base! It's like 9 is just the boss's second phase!
Got a perfect score on this one! As a KH fan, I knew plenty of these off the top of my head, but I also had to guess for some based on my intuition. Knowledge of the composition styles, audio and instrument quality, and just generally going with my gut helped me here.
I'm actually amazed at how many I clocked as weather channel specifically because I heard some instrument in the soundfont or some mixing layer that I knew would never be in any kingdom hearts game, or that were even consistent among the weather channel songs. Like one of them had a sort of "scruffing" sound that felt incongruous with the KH soundtracks. The ones I got wrong were all ones I guessed were also weather channel but turned out to be from games in the series I hadn't played like Coded or BBS, so that was really cool in contrast with my 8 year old brain clocking every single KH2 track from note 1. What a fascinating video!
1:38 imagine going to the weather channel and hearing this. reminds me of those clips from different weather stations where the onscreen graphic glitches out and says its gonna be 3000F in Clark County that day or something
Adding what I think prior to each answer. Opening - Og and Unchained χ's Dearly Beloved. One of my favorites. Then again every Dearly Beloved is the best. Song 1 - Weather Channel Song 2 - A Nameless Planet, field theme for the Cy-Bug Sector in Union χ. I looked into so much about the χ saga for the first time recently, so it's still generally fresh on my mind and my obsession over KH, especially its OST has led me to becoming quite familiar with most of it. Song 3 - Floating in Bliss, for the Atlantica and Port Royal gummi ship routes in KHII. The least intense of the route music, pretty nice and fitting for the aquatic settings of the worlds they lead to. Song 4 - Weather Channel Song 5 - A Fight to the Death for the first Armored Xemnas fight in KHII and later the first part of the Saïx fight in KHIII. Surely this one would be easy, it's the start of such an amazing final boss. Song 6 - Weather Channel Song 7 - Cloudchasers, for the Olympus Coliseum and Pride Lands gummi ship routes in KHII. Strange that these are the only separate routes to share a theme unlike all the others who share themes with each other who are side by side on the world map. Song 8 - Darkness of the Unknown, specifically the first segment for the gummi ship-esque wyvern phase in KHII. Even more specifically, this is the PS2 version. I love this track a lot. Song 9 - Weather Channel, more specifically my introduction to it and its oddly high quality and KH-esque selection of tunes. It's the Storm Alert for 2006. Song 10 - Asteroid Attack, for the Land of Dragons and Beast's Castle gummi ship routes in KHII. Song 11 - Weather Channel , Storm Alert again. Song 12 - Weather Channel Song 13 - Deep Drop, battle theme for The World That Never Was in DDD. A fitting choice for the 13th song in this video. Song 14 - Weather Channel Song 15 - Rinzler Recompiled, for his boss encounter at the end of Sora's version of The Grid in DDD. Song 16 - Hazardous Highway, for the Agrabah and Halloween Town gummi ship routes. It seems that someone likes the KHII gummi ship route music. I do to, definitely my favorite of the three games' selection. Song 17 - On the Debug!! from coded. Also specifically the og mobile version that was used as a special theme during battle when using debug attacks., which I would not have expected as the version used, but pretty neat to see. It's also coded acknowledgement in general and that's awesome enough on its own. I don't care how filler it is, coded is awesome as a GAME, because this is a GAME series that has more elements to it than just the story. It doesn't matter how filler the story is if the GAME part of the GAME is awesome. Song 18 - Weather Channel Song 19 - Weather Channel Song 20 - Unbreakable Chains, for the final encounter with Vanitus in Ventus' story. It might generally just be a slower tempo version of Enter the Darkness, but I do quite enjoy the other adjustments in the track, especially the Sora part. Another fitting number for a song as well. 13 of darkness, 7 of light, a total of 20 pieces to forge the χ-blade. Song 21 - Weather Channel Ending - Failing a mission in χ. My Kingdom Hearts-ing is too much for these quiz videos to be difficult most of the time, a problem shared with other quizzes like this for other media I like. It's unfortunate, but a negative I must deal with as a person who delves far too deep into the media I enjoy.
When I was making the quiz, I thought to myself, what Kingdom Hearts music sounds the most like it could be the opening to a weather segment on prime time TV? It turns out KH2 Gummi Ship music was the answer - I guess space and storms can have similar vibes, and the KH1 and KH3 themes were too "sparkly" to feel like severe weather alert music. Most of the time, I used the PS2 versions to blend in with the lower-quality Weather Channel instrument samples, which is also why I went for the original coded version of "On the Debug!!" (that, and I have a soft spot for original coded's OST) I was going to include a Weather Channel song called "Eye of the Storm", which would have been a fun parallel with the KH3 boss track of the same name, but sadly UA-cam's copyright system kept picking it up
@@Aid1043 The real question now would be see what it would be like if the composers who've made music used on the Weather Channel were given the opportunity to compose music for Kingdom Hearts.
Very clever using the gummi ship music for this! I'm familiar enough with Kingdom Hearts music that I could tell most of the Weather Channel songs right away because of elements that sounded distinctly unlike Kingdom Hearts, often the type of drumbeat and rhythms they used. The only one I missed was 15, though I had a close call with 2
i guessed Kingdom Hearts on 20 purely because if that started playing on the weather channel i'd be 100% certain the forecast would be that we're all about to die. you did a GREAT job at picking kh songs that are less likely to be known and don't have any immediately recognizable leitmotifs tho!! i got most of them right but not all, 17 got me because i started trying to listen for how the instruments sounded and that one was quite a bit different lol
I’m literally screaming!! Ok not really because it’s still early but I am dying inside laughing so hard at this!! Why is this so incredibly entertaining?!
Oh 100%, at a certain point I realized that I was less trying to recognize the songs and more looking for notable leitmotifs and key changes that Kingdom Hearts songs all tend to have
I got a 19/21 ,_, didn't play bbs or recoded 😅
it also helps that if you're really familiar with yoko shimomura's style of composing, it becomes a LOT easier to point out her tracks from the rest (i played... a lot of final fantasy 15 which she composed for, and they had at least a handful of kh-reminiscent tracks)
Chris Kennedy calm down, it's only a 50% chance of rain!
I never would have expected to get fooled by Weather channel music
Song 7 being called "Cloudchasers" really isn't fair LMAO
finally something that has hit my niche as someone passionate about both kingdom hearts and the weather channel
this is a brand new sentence
ME TOO OMFG
In Argentina there's a weather channel that actually uses an edited version of Cloudchasers lol
Oh, really? That's wild, do you happen to know what it's called?

En que canal?
No way 😂
I feel proud in myself that after the first two notes I instantly recognized the coded track as from coded. I think I should put that on my resume
Coded is so underrated imo. Such a good handheld game and a really interesting levelling system.
The whole glitch/bug hunting sections I could've done without though but I really do wish more people played it.
Now that you've reminded me of its existence I might try it on the Steam Deck
I haven't played coded enough to recognize this one xD but I recognized unbreakable chains right away instead!
Same. I love Recoded and its music
I was almost thrown off, since I've never heard the Coded version of the track, but I love ReCoded and was anticipating the next verse the whole time so I knew it was KH
That...was a surprisingly difficult quiz. After song 9, I legit was having trouble distinguishing except for obvious KH songs I knew by heart.
Same here, got 3 wrong and I was quite surprised by some of those!
As an east coaster, one of these Weather Channel songs I am VASTLY familiar with because they always play it for hurricane updates.
Missed 2 and they both happened to be composers for KH that were not Yoko Shimomura LOL this was a fantastic video
Same 😂 im familiar with her style.
**Turns on Weather Channel on Radio**
Radio: **When you walk away**
"You won't hear me say"
As someone who played every kh and the mario & luigi games, I'm pretty familiar with shimomura's common instrument choices and what kinds of progressions she favors, so if I didn't recognize it and it didn't sound like her I presumed it was weatherscan. Because of this, its the kh tracks that weren't hers and went out of her norms that tripped me up.
yeah same for me, I'm very familiar with her work lol
the fact i struggled this hard to get about 75% of tracks right tells me one thing: kingdom hearts has some weather channel-ey ass music
the way I could tell each and every track cuz I had the Kingdom Hearts OST in spotify on loop
nice lol
The only song I missed was #9. Considering I don’t play kingdom hearts AND I’m pretty sure I never even touched the weather channel, I’m incredibly pleased. What a fun quiz idea
Song 21 doesn't even sound like something from either Kingdom Hearts OR The Weather Channel. It sounds like something you'd hear in Bendy And The Ink Machine. The fact that it IS Weather Channel music is crazy.
probably some tornado warning piece, it's got twister vibes
1:14 welcome back zakat from zone of the enders 2
I learned about The Weather Channel Bangers on an AbsolBlog's videos, the Kingdom Hearts vibes are unreal
Imagine Heartless coming out of the clouds and fuckin Storm Alert is playing
Man, this was really fun to do. Thanks for compiling this.
I got three wrong myself, the Rinzler theme, the dream drop distance drop theme, and the Union cross theme. It was challenging but very satisfying. I found that not trying to remember every song in the series, rather remembering what instruments they usually use helped a lot. So when you hear a song using an instrument they never really use, it was probably a weather channel song. The most obvious were the coded one, cause it clearly was a DS midi or something similar sounding, and the weather channel song with bad quality, since KH has clear music everywhere.
Same. 3 wrong, 15, 20, and... can't remember entirely.
Possible Spoiler but one thing that helped me was that Yoko Shimomura usually added more notes in a medley if that make sense, and the weather channel themes usually are a bit more ambient.... Idk how else to describe it
OH and the weather channels uses more "action movie" esque sound design than kh
#20 is so iconic to me, that was the first music medal I got in KHuX, I played it over and over again. It's also one of my favorite Melody of Memories levels to play.
I don’t know how you came up with this concept, but you forever have my respect, my good chum.
The only reason I aced this quiz is because I know the entire soundtrack of every single KH game. If I wasn’t disgustingly obsessed I would have easily failed.
And now I need the Weather Channel’s playlist on my itunes
The weather channel has gone hard with its music since the 90s. My Dad would have it on as a kid and it’s partially how I got my music taste now
I'm not the most knowledgably on Kingdom Hearts but this was WAAAAAAAY harder then it should have been
6:04 An epic boss battle! Surely it's kingdom hea-
Damn.
I was going pretty strong until you dropped a Sonic Adventure 2 track for track 16. I know the quiz said KH or Weather Channel, but I legit was like, "There's no shot this isn't a Sonic the Hedgehog song" LOL
Seriously, how did I never know Yoko could compose the greatest Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack of all time? Somebody get this lady to just do every game soundtrack man.
That's funny, this track always makes me think of F-Zero...or at least, the F-Zero stages in Smash Bros.
1:38 Yo, that's some end of the world kind of weather, if that song really did play on The Weather Channel 😂
TIL The Weather Channel has some mindblowing bangers
The tracks from the handhelds were what really got me.
Unless it's song 16 lmao
That clip for song 11 was almost indistinguishable for me… Chris a true KH fan
what a great idea i loved this
i got nine wrong 😭 all near the end it the beginning was easy
I’m probably one of the biggest KH fans and this was MUCH harder than I expected it to be.
19 out of 21. I've never played a KH game (I want to someday). I know just enough about Shimomura's style to recognize it. It also helps having known the 2006 Storm Alert theme ahead of time.
Plot twist: they're all Weather Channel, even Simple and Clean.
Song 6 got me, it sounded so Kingdom Heartsy even though I hadn't heard it before, I guessed KH
I love you pfp lmaooo
Haha loved the concept. 9 is the only one that tripped me up. But it did that big time! I still can't wrap my head around it NOT being a YS song, it literally has the EXACT same progression and vibe of a vs. Org XIII battle song, it's absolutely insane
As an avid weather fan and a diehard kh fan this is one quiz I can proudly say I aced.
Bro Song #14 is so weirdly nostalgic lmao
I say this as someone who grew up wanting to be a meteorologist lol
After the first two tracks I was feeling like this was going to be easy, but then I gradually realized KH and TWC must have been roommates in college
When four of the tracks were from KH2 gummi ship levels I had to wonder if you were trying to make a statement
I missed #2 #9 and #11
The first union x song really tripped me up.
Then the 9 and 11 just straight surprised me, I didnt know the weather channel could go that hard!?
16/21 I had no idea the Weather Channel was such an animie style bop.
The ones I missed are 7,9,11,17,19,
Why the heck does Weather Channel music sound like it would fit in right with Ace Combat's soundtrack
Four wrongs! Now I really need to check out that weather channel ost
Thanks for this. People have been sleeping on the Weather Channel. When I was little, my mom put it on to help me sleep.
I did not know how much i needed this and now i am complete
My main guessing pattern was going off the volume of the percussion. Weather channel songs tend to have it louder.
1:38 imagine going to the weather channel and hearing this. reminds me of those clips from different weather stations where the onscreen graphic glitches out and says its gonna be 3000F in Clark County that day or something
when tf is the weather channel gonna make an ost? I need it
It was unironically easier to guess based off of the audio quality rather than the actual music on some of these. Incredible
Adding what I think prior to each answer.
Opening - Og and Unchained χ's Dearly Beloved. One of my favorites. Then again every Dearly Beloved is the best.
Song 1 - Weather Channel
Song 2 - A Nameless Planet, field theme for the Cy-Bug Sector in Union χ.
Song 4 - Weather Channel
Song 5 - A Fight to the Death for the first Armored Xemnas fight in KHII and later the first part of the Saïx fight in KHIII. Surely this one would be easy, it's the start of such an amazing final boss.
Song 6 - Weather Channel
Song 7 - Cloudchasers, for the Olympus Coliseum and Pride Lands gummi ship routes in KHII.
Song 12 - Weather Channel
Song 13 - Deep Drop, battle theme for The World That Never Was in DDD. A fitting choice for the 13th song in this video.
Song 14 - Weather Channel
Song 15 - Rinzler Recompiled, for his boss encounter at the end of Sora's version of The Grid in DDD.
Song 18 - Weather Channel
Song 19 - Weather Channel
Song 20 - Unbreakable Chains, for the final encounter with Vanitus in Ventus' story. It might generally just be a slower tempo version of Enter the Darkness, but I do quite enjoy the other adjustments in the track, especially the Sora part. Another fitting number for a song as well. 13 of darkness, 7 of light, a total of 20 pieces to forge the χ-blade.
Song 21 - Weather Channel
Ending - Failing a mission in χ.
Most of the time, I used the PS2 versions to blend in with the lower-quality Weather Channel instrument samples, which is also why I went for the original coded version of "On the Debug!!" (that, and I have a soft spot for original coded's OST)
I was going to include a Weather Channel song called "Eye of the Storm", which would have been a fun parallel with the KH3 boss track of the same name, but sadly UA-cam's copyright system kept picking it up
@@Aid1043 The real question now would be see what it would be like if the composers who've made music used on the Weather Channel were given the opportunity to compose music for Kingdom Hearts.
It’s surprising how well my mindset “If it sounds like one then it’s gotta be the other” got me through this, with a few exceptions.
I feel like I got most of them correct, but definitely surprised with a couple. And really surprised with how hard the weather channel comes with their compositions
Thank you for this, I’m glad more people are getting put on to how good The Weather Channel’s music is. And how many fucking Yoko Shimomura-isms exist all throughout its history.
If anyone wants more weather channel music Trammel Stark has by far my favorite songs ever made for the channel.
This is how you distinguish the true fans from the newbies
I've been a fan for almost 20 years and I find myself wanting to crawl under my house's foundation because I missed 5 of them 😂
Yeah I'm a real weather channel fan unlike these posers
I’ve been a Weather Channel fan for decades. These new kids can’t fw this
This was way harder than I thought it would be. Super fun idea, thank you for making this!
