  • This old Mercedes "Ponton" 190 has been sitting for MANY years. Is it savable? Will it run? Do German cars hold up to neglect as well as we've seen old American cars do? All that and more in this video.
    THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

Saw a lot of comments about it being shame to scrap a car with all the good parts on it. They're only good if people need them and are willing to buy them. I listed this car is the parts car before even picking it up. If you're interested in something, shoot me an offer. Would be great to see somebody use the glass or other usable items

The '53 to '62 MB had some of the first "pontoon" styling in which the fenders and the body sides were all on the same basic plane. They were some of the first unibodies with crumple zones which made them safer in a crash but also made them more prone to being slowly totaled by rust. I had a 1961 with the fins. It had diagonally opposed brakes, a plastic brake reservoir, and seat belts well before most cars. These had a very fragile ether bulb and long copper tube for the engine temp gauge. I'd be amazed if it still worked, but if it did it would probably be worth some money. ALSO, the terminals for the Bakelite electrical connections under the dash for these are silver. It might even be solid silver, but I'm not sure.

So if you hadn't pulled it out of there it would have a) rusted into the ground and been useable to nobody or b) gone to the scrapyard whole anyway. Some people need to engage their brains before they start commenting on stuff

You cannot even compare your channel to the Whistlin Diesel guy, you respect cars and try to save them. Not in a carshow display condition, but at least functional, reliable and running, your passion is shinning through your videos, and so are your skills and mindset. I think we all admire that, not to mention you bring us all in cool adventures. I think we all can tell by now you're just genuine, and with or without camera, that would be the same lifestyle, cause you get the thrill from it.
The Whistlin Diesel guy is the typical young rich kid, who had everything in his life, and has no particular skills but spending his money in stupid ways, faking some publicity stunts and destroying things the average joe could never buy in one life, for fun, and for an absurd amount of view and money, in the way selling merchandising to his community, which is probably pretty young. He's just this kind of talentless, views grinding youtuber, almost a Logan Paul for automobiles. Best thing is to ignore him anyway, I suspect nobody liking NNKH would appreciate the guy's "work".

Did the conflict with the landlord stem from the crazy guy that maneuvered the truck out in the middle of the night with a loud muffler? I bet nobody like that and you should have camped out until morning; though you did have to go out the wrong way up a one way street, and that might only have been doable in the wee hours, so I don't see any good options.

  • @CircuitBored
    @CircuitBored 13 днів тому +36

This isn't something I often see people commenting on in your videos: you have such a natural talent for compelling visual storytelling. You could remove the audio from most of your videos and they would still be captivating and make complete sense. It's little moments like the shot at 19:40, where you clearly took the time to set up a camera just for a shot of you looking at a bag, that show how acutely you understand the power of visual intrigue.
I think this is a huge part of why your vlogs are so successful and will continue to be. You share with us your organic everyday experiences but go the extra mile to make them feel like more than just everyday videos.
Thank you so much for all that you do here. Your videos warm my heart.

NNK, i wonder if you could poll your commentors on how much they like a paticular design when you do a "Will it Run" episode. Then from the encouragement in the comments, reach out to the vehicle brand, pointing out how much the classic design is a favorite. Especially the engine compartment, windows, seats, headlights, console, etc in how a specific year Wows the car buying public. After they see a 360 up close.
Maybe that gets a modern model with lighter bodies & hybrid engines, regen braking, etc.
Maybe gets you some State of the Art tech parts for revealing how some classics need more retrograde to durability and old guy design.

Chris, Mercedes-Benz manufactured the "Ponton" (German for pontoon-- referring the bulbous body) from about 1953 to 1959, basically. The next series was the "Heckflosse" or swallow-tail, which was what they called the model with tailfins (which remind me of an old Rambler somewhat). I had a 1965 M-B 190D with the 1.9 liter diesel motor that was a dark grey similar to that Ponton. Rated at 69 bhp, it wasn't a speed demon, but it ran great. These models of Mercedes had an issue with rust (like most European cars of this era) especially in the frame.

The reason I watch your videos is because mechanics is in my blood. Dad is a an independent mechanic here in Oregon. Owns and runs his own shop for 35+ years. Specializes in Mercedes and BMW. Mostly older ones. I know many of his customers, good people. When one passed away I was able to purchase his Mercedes. A 1998 E320. However more importantly, a car that my dad had maintained for decades. Two years of ownership with few issues.
I asked dad about this particular Mercedes and he shared some of his knowledge. What he told me lines up pretty well with what we see in this video. He said the engines where the best part of these cars. "bulletproof" was the word he used. Everything else was problem after problem in his experience but the engines would run with minimal effort or maintenance. I spoke with him after watching the caddy video so I had not seen this one yet. He brought up the rear suspension and axle being a source of problems for the car. Then I watch this and the rear axle is all kinds of messed up.
He also talked about the hood problem, not new for him being a Mercedes mechanic, those hood attached grills being difficult to work around but later Mercedes had hinges that allow the hoods to go up higher, my E320 has a hinge button that allows the hood to go up 90 degrees.

It was probably parked in the 70s with some minor problems like needing brake work or suspension issues because the cool new thing then was to get a car with fake wood trim, cheap as can be materials, and an 8 track player. The quality Mercedes was looked down upon as antiquated and obsolete. Sad that it went from a car someone paid a premium for new and loved to rotting on a dirt lot for nearly 50 years. That drivetrain would be nice to drop into some other car of that era. It’s great that was saved.
