In this video I compare the speed tests of our newly installed Avtex AMr985, the Netgear Nighthawk M1, and the Huawei E5577C mobile Mifi.
I connect each router to the external antenna and test the upload and download speeds. Im using Sky Mobile, and the results are quite interesting.

Another excellent video Dan, very informative and interesting to watch as always. Thank you for the content - we always look forward to your uploads.
Interesting results Dan. We are still using the Netgear Nighthawk 2, it works really well and even better since I installed a Poynting antenna. We use a Smarty SIM which is on the 3 network, this was the one that seemed to have to best coverage at most of the sites we go to.
Great informative vlog, take care matey, Martin
Brilliant informative video as Usual Dan. This is the next project for our caravan so i will be looking at the 3 of these systems in the coming weeks.
Kind regards
Linda and Glenn 🙂👍
Very interesting. It obviously does make a massive difference on what to choose based on usage. Still don't know if just us as a couple with only a couple of devices if the phone tethering isn't our best solution 😕. Great video. Thanks for the insights. 👏
Brilliant! Very informative 👍
We’ve been using m2 and now I have access to an M5 but our new van will have the avtex system. The results are interesting though, we’ve got a broadband go sim so roam across all networks which is useful
As always Like the videos. Am looking at having the Aztex put in are van soon. Is it correct that it can take two sim cards?
Great video as usual - Dan please keep the coming - it also depends on the Ariel you have connected to your router - our router is an M1 and always been very happy with it. Shame your locked into a contract- that can be do restrictive as one sim to another again can make a huge difference!! Keep ‘‘em coming - don’t be a stranger we’ve missed you!!! cheers Chris “ The Aussie living in the the Netherlands “🇦🇺🍾⛷️
Great test, thank you. What about trying your phone SIM (or any other mobile network) and repeating the tests? My theory is that network has the biggest impact, so if you tried a different SIM, would the performance differences between devices be mirrored on another network? Spend more on SIMs, less on hardware? :)
Have a Netgear m1 in our old van no antenna was good but not always. was not sure what to get in our new motorhome but your video's have made me think the cost is worth getting the Avtex 985 Kit thanks for the video's on this subject
Hi Dan another great vid. I just wonder with the Huawei because you said the antenna connections were so close if they were touching and affecting it?
Hi Paul. I did look closer at this device, and tried another connector, but the results seemed to confirm this. I think it just doesn’t like external antennas.
What 4g External antenna would you recommend for use with the net gear m1. I've just bought the router and will be fitting very soon
We don't use the caravan enough to justify buying any of these gadgets, I use my i-phone, as a hotspot and connect to that with a tablet or laptop. Like you I am on Sky, along with the xyl, and although it's a bit of a faff, I connect the laptop to our tv and watch tv on Sky Go, which doesn't use any data. We also get the rollover data which is great. I also joined Readly on your recommendation some time ago, and can really recomend it. Not as many magazines now for computing or amateur radio, but plenty on photography and railways. Also 'The Oldie', well suited to an old fogey like me! Keep up the good work Dan, always an interesting watch. 73.
Hi Dan. Great videos and you've been a great help over the last few years that I've started having a caravan. I wonder if I could pick your brains please. I'm on a seasonal pitch now and it has no mobile or internet signal. There is an option to buy in a rural connection, either pay as you go or monthly 2 year contract, which is not worth while financially. The pay as you go option is ok but the signal is rubbish. Even on the phone is goes on and off and on and off, and sometimes need to log in again. I'm not the best educated on all this internet stuff but is there something on the market that I can use to log into the provider and pay and use this to increase/boost or steady the signal? Then I can use that to log our phones and fire stick onto?
Were the Huawei and netgear configured for external antenna? I know some Huawei routers require this it may explain the anomalies. Our Huawei B311 performs extremely well without an external antenna but does need to configured in settings if one is used it cost £60 on Amazon it also accepts a telephone with an RJ11 adapter that cost less than a fiver. It even came with a Smarty SIM . Thanks for the video👍
Hi Ian, yes all configured (rebooted) across all devices. 👍
I had the motorhome wifi installed and used netearr M2 connected to the roof antenna (not the MIFI included). the speeds were ok and the same reason wanted VPN on the router. this would enable all my devices to connect without individually downloading VPN and switching on each device.. I bought a refurbished Teltonika RUT950 LTE 4G Router (same router as Avtex) different web interface and cheaper. . Amazing speeds
As an RF guy Dan, I would check the SWR and frequency sweet spot of that external antennas! Does it use on antenna for RX and one for TX? The comparison between phone and MiFi would be useful. We are due to get a seasonal pitch this year and I know the phones (EE and O2) are marginal (both connectivity and slow speed), but would be interested to know if a MiFi would give a stronger more stable (and faster!) connection.
Stuck the VNA on it this morning Simon, and can only measure up to 2ghz. - seems resonant at 890mhz, and 1.3Ghz. Typical low spot SWR IS 1:1.2. Tried both connections which seem to be the same (minor differences on sweep graph) so I assume both connections are TX/RX but phased for omnidirectional coverage. 👍
Interesting video. I have the Netgear M2 router and also the Avtex in my Bailey. Are you aware you can lock the band frequency on the Avtex that can boost the download and upload speeds?
No - completely unaware of this. Can you point me in the direction of this setting. Thanks.
Network>Mobile>General
Scroll down to Frequency Bands
Then connection method
Change to Manual and select band
Then press Save
Band 20 I found best for EE and Smarty(3)
I have a Huawei router (not this model) and I have to “tell” it in the built in software that its using the external antenna. One assumes if you didn’t do this on the Huawei and adding the external antenna made a difference, then maybe you need to check if that needs changing? Also, most phones aren’t locked any more out of the box? Have you tried the o2 sim in it?
Hey, did check the device - it’s plug in and switch on with ext. antennas. Phone is 100% locked, I tried.
We have 4 Sky sims in the family. Piggy bank is great for data to put in caravan when we go away
Just tried the Amazon link and unfortunately the Avtex is coming up as unavailable and no idea when or if it will be. Was it too popular perhaps following this video? The Delia effect 😅
Sorry for this. It has come and gone, in and out of stock - just check back occasionally.
Hi, how well did you find the adapter connectors fit into the Nighthawk? I struggle with ones I have as they tend to fall out when we are driving in our camper.
They did connect quite well, nice and tight with a reassuring click. They do require a substantial push to engage them.
When considering the Avtex system keep in mind its a rebadged Teltonika router...
I use a Huawei, no external antenna, no problem with the actual use, on plusnet, Netflix and Prime on the firestick, no buffering etc. Weird up load speeds as I cant get that upload speed at home with 1TB Virgin connection!!
Your not wrong about the signal in RWB Dan !
It’s shocking isn’t it. The second we all pass Sally Pusey’s Inn - the signal goes to pop. Sat at home, I get Edge?!? It’s like 1997 again.
Didn't thinking mobile providers were legally allowed to lock devices to specific networks anymore?
Only other consideration for people is what bands are they connecting to. Example, if one is "band 4" and one is "band 2" one may be more congested or less bandwidth.
Hi Dan, What is the difference in price.
The Avtex was £350, M1 was £300 ish and the Huawei was around £100. I’ve put links to these below - worth shopping around 👍
@@TheTrudgians Dan, interestingly, the 'Teltonika RUT955 LTE 4G Router' (available on Amazon for £180) looks identical to the Avtex device! Maybe it's the same unit and re-badged for Avtex. Be interesting to see if the functionality and spec is identical.
It is. But not sure on the antenna.
I'm surprised that the Avtex is fastest, but further testing would need to be done in a set of vraious locations to be proven, beyond doubt, that the Avetx is superior to others. Also the other 2 devices are totally mobile whereas the Avtex is a permanant fixture in the caravan. That's something to be considered as well. The bottom line is, Does it work for you? We all have different needs for our internet, so choose wisely and affordably. Given enough money and time to build your 'custom' Wi-Fi, we can all have 'the best'.
my Huawei needs to be powered off and. then on. again. to select. the. external antenna
Think this was the same, and did this on the test. Other versions appear to have a setting to use ext antennas too. 👍
AVTEX
Of course the Huawei E5577C has a faster upload speed Dan. It's recording all of your online activity and uploading it to a Chinese satellite in orbit over Royal Wootton Bassett. 🤣🤣🤣
Hope they dont look at my browsing history.
Dan - Huawei is pronounced 'Wah way' 😉
I’m sure it really doesn’t matter.

Paused Video and guessing that the Netgear is the fastest.
HUAWEI
We just use our phones data. If we have no data we go out for a walk or go to the pub.
A lot of money for something that will not get much use, how many days do most people use their caravans? I'll stick to my smartphone hotspot.
For someone who uses the caravan for 150+ nights a year the cost outlay isn't a problem, excellent for streaming all Sky channels and lots more.
For me it isn't how much I use it, it's the value it gives me. If I miss a work card or deadline it costs me dear. The Avtex just works and is worth that alone in giving me the freedom to work from the caravan more or less anywhere I am.

Eh?
Why do you need the Internet in your van,,your on holiday get out and do activities. Forget the Internet, better still leave ya phone and pads at home, just take a non Internet phone for emergency.
For all the reasons that I listed in my previous video concerning mobile Wi-Fi.
@TheTrudgians you don't need all that to be honest.
Can we have some new holiday/trip content. I feel like this channel has become more of a product review and advertising. Truth be told I feel like it’s gone abit down hill.
