  • All you need to know about the internet in your caravan or motorhome.
    Getting online in your caravan or motorhome isn't always easy and can be expensive. What's the most cost-effective way for your needs?
    You might not need 4G and unlimited data. You might be on caravan sites that have WiFi, how do you get a better signal? You pay for the service, you might as well make the most of it.
    4G routers, 4G and Wifi antennas.
    I'm using VOXI 4G network, which runs on Vodafone, if you'd like to try, you can get a free Amazon gift card by clicking here referme.to/4H4W2T
    I've written a 25 page eBook on this subject and covers the areas I talk about in the vlog and more.

    Good to see the options. Key is research and what works for you. We are heavy users in the caravan when away, 20gb a day with the kids streaming, films in the evening and work requirements. We opted for unlimited 3, 4g router free and allows roaming abroad for £17 a month. Never let us down but there is a slight glitch noticed on the automatic settings switching between 3G and 4g. Easily sorted by setting once in your location. As unlimited we often extend to neighbouring caravans limiting access if our demand is higher. When not in the caravan it’s used in the car. Very happy and got a 4g external antenna to boost signal if poor.

    You've done a lot of research Graham. We couldn't justify paying for two sim cards in the caravan. We only browse the internet and the 12gb on the phone is ample. We switch on personal hotspot and tether from the phone. Thanks for the comprehensive information. Rob

    Great in-depth look at WiFi in the caravan Graham. We got a 3 Sim from Smarty, 100gb a month cancel anytime. On a 12 night away in summer we used 46gb, watching Netflix and surfing the net. We are like you, we use the internet a lot when away. Didn’t know about the using restrictions when in Fr.......Europe so will need to look at that. Thanks for the mention, I looked at both antennas you have but decided to be brave and drill a hole in the roof for the PUCK 2. So far it’s worked well, but as you say they only work if the network coverage if good. Very informative vlog, cheers Martin

    Hi Graham, so like you I wanted (actually needed) an external antenna. Our caravan is only a year old so we didn’t want to add a hole in the roof which might invalidate our 10 year water ingress warranty. So I decided to use an existing hole. We watch mainly UA-cam and Netflix, so I removed the TV antenna, bought a replacement TV antenna mast direct from Status @ £27. Sealed one end, added a cable gland and fitted the same Pontying antenna you have to it. So you can swop antennas back and forth should you want or need to. By the way Pontying recommend using adaptor tails rather than the adaptor plugs as it can excessively load the router connectors owing to the strong memory the antenna cables have. I’ll send a picture if you like (after lock down). Keep up the great content from John & Al

    Interesting and wide ranging topic Graham, thanks! When I had the E&P fitted I also had them make a hole in my roof to fit a 4G ‘puck’ style antenna and fixed router in one of the overheads (where the TV aerial is situated. I currently run it on the ‘3’ network with a 24/24 sim (24GB lasts 24mths) and is top up-able. Since we had it fitted we have not been able to travel anywhere, for one reason and another (buggered ‘van since August!) but we did give it a whirl during our ‘Drivecation’ exploits... ✅ 👍🏻 🐸

    Hi Graham, I'm a fairly new subscriber as we got our first caravan last Autumn. I dread to think how much we've spent on accessories and stuff, but one thing we both agreed on, was we want the escape factor where we get away from all the daily grind. We don't have or want a TV in the caravan even, but I must confess I take my laptop sometimes for UA-cam etc, as I prefer that to using my phone which I use as a hub. We like walking , reading and Games etc. It's old fashioned I know, but that's what we like in our middle age. Cheers!

    Just started watching your videos, really good. This was a really good informative video as people have mentioned. I had the netgear m1 for a long time had it for when I used to work out and about, I’ve just upgraded to the M2 it’s now permanently installed in the tourer but we have also got a 4g home broadband router from EE slightly more powerful we use this in our static with external antenna same as yours works really well with the static. Regards to networks we have have a few sims EE is a phone sim that shares my data from my phone so have about 500gb Three sim unlimited data and Voxi with the unlimited social media and video. Had to mix between them all on occasions but does work for us although not cheap I do need to cut back at some point

    Hi Graham. I used to use the HooToo Wifi hotspot connected to my Iphone hotspot. It was a bit of a faf but it did work.. I have simplifiedmy whole WiFi/internet by taking out a Three MiFi 4/5g with unlimited data on a two year contract for £22.00 per month with no upfront cost for the device. In my van I connect my Sky Q box, Amazon Echo, Laptop, Two phones and smart TV. Its been perfect and even stream Netflix. But of course it depends the signal. Sky Cinema downloads do take a while lol.... Just a tip, if you use an Amazon Echo in your van, it keeps your phone hotspot alive all the time you are close.

  • @alinherts5414

    Great video. I have the same antenna as you but with a different wifi router in the van. I have an aerial pole that clamps to the jockey wheel (antenna stays on the pole). The pole is in 2 parts and when broken down it fits in the front side locker. I run the cables under the seats and the router sits on the kitchen by the plugs (same van as you). I did need extension cables though. You can close the side locker with the cables running out to the aerial pole. This sits the aerial away from the van and you can adjust the height to try and improve the signal if in a bad reception area. The pole came from amazon.
    I managed to get a deal from Vodafone with unlimited data. They sometimes offer deals for a short period, so I had to keep an eye on what was going. I assume that most providers do the same. The deal was available either monthly or for a set contract over 12 months. Unfortunately the unlimited data does not apply in France where the limit is 25gb a month. Not that you have ever mentioned France of course!

    I've got a 3 sim for my phone and home broadband...which is a SIM..3 upgraded my router so basically in the caravan I take the old router with some bunny ear antenna and pop my phone's sim In it. I can still see texts on the router log on and most people use other things so when we go out I just put the sim back in my phone. It works a treat.

    Graham, I use the netgear as well no issues without a booster, really good device and simple to use, just a bit pricey. Like you out of contract with phone so moved over to sky mobile buying a £10 sim with 10Gb a month, also did my phone and wife’s phone all up 24 Gb/month for £26. Why sky well they piggy bank your unused data every month so when I went on holiday in August around north Scotland I had 69 Gb in the piggy bank plus the 10Gb for that month, in two weeks used about 30Gb and I class myself as a big user watching sky on my IPad a lot plus wife internet shopping lol. Would high recommend both.

    Great video Graham, Lebara who piggyback Vodaphone have an offer of £17.50 month for 3 months (usual price £35) unlimited data. If you can ever get the green light from the boss to drill the roof, Poynting do a Puck 5, this gives you the WiFi antenna built into the the same antenna, a little more expensive than the Puck 2 that Martin fitted but gives you the extra functionality, Maybe the new caravan could turn up with a 20mm hole in the roof 😉

    Great Vlog and I particularly like the impartial way you discuss the options.
    On our first outing in our van we had a shock when watching Netflix and used up a months data in a night! Just didn’t realise the amount of data used to stream a programme.
    To solve the problem on Netflix we set up another user name for use in the van, then in the settings for that user changed the download quality from 3Gb to 0.3Gb. Even at this minimum setting the picture quality is more than good enough for a caravan TV.
    By setting up a separate user it’s easy to manage your download usage, nothing worse than watching a film an rinsing though your data allowance.
    You mentioned Smarty as a linked provider, just had a look at their monthly sim plan with no long term contract commitment. Unlimited data for £18 per month!!!

      Thanks for watching. I've recently moved to VOXI (vodafone network) They allow you to watch UA-cam, Netflix, Amazon Prime and it doesn't come out of your data allowance. @@CaravanVlogger I thought it was a bit odd. I’d factory reset whatever mic/recording device you are using, sounds like you’ve enabled some kind of gate/compressor setting maybe, so it squashes your voice when you speak and when you stop it opens it up to all the background noise.

      Thanks for watching Steve. I did look at Smarty, which is the 3 network. It’s a very tricky decision. Recently switched to EE which is more expensive but better overall coverage I find. You pay for it of course,.

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  10 місяців тому +1

      I’ve recently changed to a Maxview Roam X as it has a fixed antenna on the roof. Better for us than the portable antenna I was using before.

    • @Lee-zg3gx
      @Lee-zg3gx 10 місяців тому

      @@CaravanVlogger If you don’t mind me asking, so did the eventually agree to drilling a hole in the roof, and how much did the setup cost including installation? I may just cancel the M1 if the cost for Router and Antenna are about the same

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  10 місяців тому

      The main issue with drilling a hole was the water ingress warranty. However, in the end, I got the dealer to supply and fit; therefore the warranty stays good. The roam x is around £500 + installation, around £100..

      @@CaravanVlogger Hi thanks, well I’ve now cancelled the M1. We are now going for either the Roam or Roam X to be fitted to our brand new 2023 caravan, which we pick up next month. Just to clear everything up and my anxiety having a hole drilled. This will not affect our warranty in any aspect at all? As long as we have it fitted by any caravan dealer or an installation company who Maxview suggest on their website? Sorry but, just a bit worried about this hole being drilled….😱😱

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  10 місяців тому +1

      @Lee-zg3gx Anxiety understood. I don’t know about Maxview recommended installers, but with the dealer, it’s basically Swift doing it (in our case) so if water ingress is from the Wi-Fi it’s down to them. TBH there so much sealant, no water is getting through.

    Hi Graham
    I use an external LTE aerial connected to my TP-Link MR6400 4G dual band router which cost less than £75 and has a Smarty sim for unlimited data for £18/month. It’s a 12v unit and I’ve hardwired it in place. I stream on a 5ghz band and everything else runs on the 2.4ghz band. I get speeds, checked on Ookla at 27mb/s. If I refer you I get a month free. 👍🏻😊
    Sim is on a 30 day rolling contract so that I can cancel at any time.

    Hi Ya, I’m on ee with unlimited data & we spent last month (April) in Yorkshire with plenty of rain watching mainly Netflix using the personal hotspot off my phone. I was surprised to see a text on my phone telling me I had used 80% of my data. So I contacted ee to ask how can I use 80% data when my data is unlimited & the girl went onto explain that I have unlimited data on the phone but when I connect a third party then I only have 100gb. Something I didn’t check at the time, I thought unlimited was unlimited, check before you sign the contract…. Mel

    You mentioned Utility Warehouse. They do an unlimited SIM on EE for £20 per month, you can add up to three more unlimited SIM's at £10 each with no contact. So four unlimited SIM's for £50. 😁

    I don't understand why you need to buy or install anything. Instead of buying a SIM with lots of data simply get the data on you phone. Then create a WiFi hot-spot. Your phone then becomes the "router" and broadcasts a WiFi signal around the area. You can add a password for security. Job done. Advantage - costs nothing compared to buying a mifi thingy. The only disadvantage is slightly increased battery consumption.

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. It really depends how much you need the internet. I sometimes work from the caravan and really can't afford to not have connection. Yes, I do quite often use my phone as a hotspot. But if you don't have a good signal, you can't hook an antenna up to your phone. Also, if a few people are hotspotting from your phone and you need to go out with your phone, those people can no longer use your phone's connection to access the internet.
      It's not life and death, if you can't see the benefit, you don't need to buy anything else, just use your phone as you say. 👍
      But there are instances where an antenna has been useful for me, both for getting a better on site wifi signal and getting a couple of more bars of 4G.
      I put buying extra kit for as long as I could, but, if your life is a misery without internet access it does help. Now, of course, that's a completely different conversation. haha
