In this video I share our current equipment line up that we use to get on line. This is different to our WIFI kit that we have been using recently. Since the summer we moved over to the Net Gear Nighthawk M1 4g router, which has been fantastic. there are a few issues, though - which I will discuss in the video.
We have also chosen a great data package which for us is a great option.

Great detailed vlog about Wifi on the go Dan. As I’ve said in the past, it’s only as good as the network signal where you are. When in the Lakes the M2 wouldn’t work, why? no signal. On our next trip out the speeds were fantastic. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. Cheers Martin 🙂

Dan, Another excellent, informative video, over time you have cost me a fortune, I used the hootoo on a 40 night cruise, it came in very handy by passing the one device only plan. The Sky mobile roll over data deal looks very interesting. A comparison between M1 & M2 would be great.

Hi Dan, another great video at just the right time for us as we are looking at the best option of getting decent wifi in the caravan, especially as both kids are now at the age of constantly needing to be connected 😪 We were going to opt for a device to connect to existing hotspots but then discovered site wifi can be very changeable and very expensive. In terms of the mk2 review, I would like a simple comparison of connection, download speed and anything that justifies the additional £100. Keep up the great work 👍

    Hi there!
Many years ago I worked for Maplin and I brought a TP Link 4G router. Which is powered by a 12v supply. So mine is wired into my caravans 12v system. 100gb for £20 a month with EE. Works like a normal home router and it looks like one too. Well recommended.

    Great video, really interesting info.
I was going to use a HUAWEI in the van, with a Motorhome WIFi 4G aerial, and am now very interested in the Netgear.
In the next video, i'd be interested to see the following -
1 - What is the difference between the M1, and M2, to justify the extra data
2 - Do either of them have connection ports for a WiFi 4G aerial
3 - More explanation about the display on them, eg how they show the amount of data, and whether that will work for all sim cards
4 - Definitely not unboxing, think that's pointless and I'd skip straight through, in fact if it says unboxing in the title I wouldn't even bother watching ;o)
    Keep up the great work.

Hi Dan, love the WW3 comment and the daughter expression having pwned your router with the admin password. :) the other downside of tethering your phone is that if the 4G signal is poor, i find i'm using the phone only by my back window or stood up with the phone out the pop-roof. I'm looking forward to the M1 with external antenna in particular, although am going to try it without first. Was about to purchase a Huawei e5785, until i saw yours and another YT review. Dan , good video as usual, but at the end of the day when touring whether using your phone your iPad, or this mobile router it comes down to the network you have chosen. Ie EE is good in certain areas as is VODAFONE and all of them. The main issue with WIFI , mobile broadband is let’s face it , site WIFI is very slow but a lot of places everyone’s goes in their van will not have a data signal from any mobile network 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi Dan, another great review thank you. I understand that the M2 can also link to a local WiFi signal to save on the LTE data, an option called data offloading by Netgear. Have you tried this? Given the sometimes poor campsite WiFi would this need an external antenna? If so would you need to disconnect the LTE antenna or is there an option to have both. Thanks for any help.

  • @MultiOutdoorman
    @MultiOutdoorman 3 роки тому

The Ethernet port is great to use for direct connection for your smart TV also. Or a hard-wired network via an additional hub/switch ... provided everyone has a cable connecting facility (RJ45 / Ethernet point) for Xbox, laptop, TV etc...
You can remove the battery to save it from cooking and just keep the M1 plugged into a USB adaptor via its Type C port.
The 2 rubber "feet" are covers which hide a pair of antenna connectors.
An external antenna would greatly improve both the WiFi reception gain and also the 4G signal strength.
Plenty online videos showing how to do that. Thanks for sharing !

Just watched this again, after getting a good deal from O2 and Virgin Media package. and decided to go with a cheaper TP-Link uinit. However I did look at the Netgear as I have alwasys used their products for networking, they work great and are reliable. In all fairness, though, I cannot justify the expense of the Netgear product in view of our limited times away in our Van. but needed something to do online bookings etc for days out and such. You offer some good advice and I always look forward to watching your latest episodes. Keep up the good work Dan. Love to Family and the long-suffering Angie. :-D. Both of you inspired me when I returned to caravanning back in 2019.

Thanks, great video Dan. I know you covered the cost of the unit and sim package you have, but would be good to finish the maths to see an average cost per day's holiday for all the 'extra' tech, which in this scenario would be above what normal phones/etc the adults and kids have normally.ie, if we spend three weeks away in the caravan over a year, then the cost of the extra tech, plus data allowance on a sim, etc, what has it added to the holiday cost??? How many hours per day is it used (over and above normal phone use)? is it really worth the money? I know value for money is all personal and subjective, but the put a daily cost on it would set it out in perspective. cheers!

Dan, what would be a typical weekends worth of data usage for your family be? How much data is a average film? Do the limited SIM contracts turn off at the data limit or do you get charged extra? Does the M1/M2 have thd ability to set usage limits (per user)? How, generally, have you found connectivity and reliability (to the cell) at the sites you've been to? As for the M2, be good to see a back to back comparison of performance plus feature differences.

I had the M1 for a few years great product used it when out and about before caravaning now use it in the caravan and in the we have a static and a tourer I didn’t find the m1 powerful enough to cover the static fully so ended up with a full size 4g router from EE works fab with external antenna now use the m1 in the tourer works fab not needed an external antenna yet but do have a range of SIM cards to use depending on area going to even got signal in Wales I’ve recently upgraded to the M2 not a big difference but my m1 was just starting to look tatty. I was interested in the new m5 version which is 5g however at over £700 it wasn’t worth it for me

Thanks for your review. They seem to be getting a few of you doing one for this. My thoughts FWIW: Hard-ware wise I did buy a "cheap mifi" but really for the data deal when daughter away (near two years near ago to solve a bad buying decision from someone and now things have changed I know). The standard mi-fi works plenty well for data speed (when seldom used), and more would be a waste for us and faster than either test you had (provider thing in an area perhaps). Firewall wise on Android I don't bother (my hopefully informed decision in a big topic), PC wise it's done locally and VPN wise I don't see as a sell for the data involved. Saying that if the VPN is free with it that might help - I think at the price it needs all the help it can get even if I would not see it as important in this package. Parental control-wise I think I would be inclined to say hotspot on or off when out (and sooner be fishing anyway)...................................................For me, it's pricey niche stuff to solve a problem I would have a hard job creating.
...No offence, JMO! EDIT: I do use a Galaxy S8 as a hotspot often and that's plenty fast (I understand phones can vary like that but something for someone else to check properly that part).

Interesting and useful info. I don’t agree that it’s stupid to buy a phone outright vs on contract though. You will usually pay more in the long run when you buy a phone on contract and the monthly plans are not as flexible. Although putting in 1k up front for a phone is a tough pill to swallow!

The network three have some amazing deals. Unlimited data use it at home and away, signal dependant obviously but at £22 it's a no brainer. Built in Alexa too. Again if three as a network provider at your home address is no good then pointless but for most the signal is great.
You also no longer need a phone connection at home like bt etc as it has its own sim card.
    Seems very expensive
    Just checked.
    £100 upfront, 36 months contract 75gb a month still cost £35 a month. That's a crazy amount.

@gilburton the three price was approx £22/23 pounds. The expenditure price was for o2. The network three home broad as you say runs off a sim card. No need for phone line etc. Take away with you. Perfect for home and in the caravan. Obviously depends on signal at home and onsite. Generally the is pretty good every where now

We use a cheap EE Mini 4G router and share our data to that account when we go away, works a treat and get signal where other networks seem to fail. The next 4G router we get must be able to connect to an external aerial which I will leave mounted to the van.

The M1 & M2 have dual antenna sockets on them to allow an external antenna to be fitted. - i'll show this on the M2 unboxing video if you like.

Hi Dan, another superb video, thank you. Just one point I need to clarify. Can I use the Netgear to provide the Wifi to my caravan tv to stream the likes of Netflix, Prime tv and Now tv? Thanks in advance. Tony

I bought an old samsung galaxy s4 and turn the hotspot on. Team that with a preloaded vodafone sim from ebay that lasts up to 30 days. Different amounts of data available so choose your usage and hopefully not much unused data wasted. Plus with the my vodafone app you can keep an eye on the data being used. Down side is hotspot and data turned on does use the battery fairly fast so may have to keep plugged in at times.

I use a HUAWEI router with a Virgin Media SIM card which has unlimited data. This sim came with my Virgin media home broadband tv package and actually didn’t cost me any extra which is amazing and so far has been excellent even on a three week holiday to France when it was hammered by our kids. It actually uses the the EE network so coverage is great.

Do you find sky mobile to have good coverage? I have EE data sim with a tp link mifi but find sometimes I can’t get Wi-Fi depending where we are? So wondered if it was the device or the network?

No matter what you have as a router
Connection the problem I have found is signal strength. A lot of sites in pretty rural places in the UK have awful network coverage.

Hi Dan did you have any teething problems getting the Sky data set up on the Nighthawk M1? SIM activated, APN details entered, Nighthawk screen showing as connected to Sky 4G - and yet no internet! The Netgear App says data is disabled but it’s not! Maybe time to contact Sky support but thought I’d check if you know a simple solution first!
    Regards

A very helpful video thanks for that but for us ( me and the boss) we only tend to want to watch the odd movie from Amazon prime and don't wish to watch any TV (that's why we go away) so I simply download a few hours of episodes to the tablet then stream it to a TV without needing a WiFi signal.

We have a TP link mifi which works well in this country with a pay as you go 3 sim. But it doesn't work if you go abroad, any ideas how to get round this?

Dan, you say you don't like paying for something you don't use which is sensible, but you could always get the unlimited data package and then cancel your home broadband/fibre and use the data at home, thus saving money to go towards the netgear package. Just a thought.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  4 роки тому

thats quite a sensible idea in fact. although as you could see from my speed tests, the signal isn't that great around here. I will check others though.
      Thanks for the idea.

Dan, I bought the HooToo purely on the strength of your review. It is good at what it does but only works with an existing wi-fi connection. I got a Netgear AirCard-81EC for free and I put a Three data SIM (bought from Argos) with 12GB preloaded to get me up and running. The top-ups are expensive so I got myself a data-only SIM from my ISP (BT). I got 16GB for the price of 8 (£12 a month) on a deal. I agree that the Nighthawk routers are superior (you get what you pay for) but our setup suits us nicely and I didn't have to pay for my mi-fi device. Andy Morley reviewed the M2 recently so it would be interesting to see how your review compares to his. Any plans to do the live streams again? I enjoyed them.

That was really informative, with engaging presentation as always. I loved Chloe's cameo! We use a tp-link wireless router permanently wired into our Motorhome, but it's good to see alternatives. I'm another who finds "unboxing" boring, having recently endured an I-phone one. However, a video about setting up end-to-end would be very helpful.

A question from a possible future Caravaner! Could you use this WiFi option at home to reduce annual costs - £120 PA is a lot for occassional van use only!, Can you stream or get TV this way. I guess the Q is what is the best option for covering both home and away £ for £?
