Thanks for bringing back great memories from my childhood; Saturday and Sunday mornings with my dad watching NYW and TOH along with The Woodwright's Shop on WABE (Atlanta). This show led me to a career in woodworking, cabinetry, carpentry, and now, drafting.
I built this mailbox out of MDO plywood just like Norm did about 20 years ago. It needed to be repainted on a regular basis and the MDO ended up rotting out. I built a version 2.0 out of a PVC deck post cover, a PVC deck post cap, and a sheet of 1/2" Azek PVC. I added some rabbets to the structure and fastened with stainless steel screws. It looks just like the original except the round finial was swapped out for a more modern PVC deck cap. It's been 8 years and it still looks as good as the day I built it. It's still the best looking mailbox out there, thanks Norm!
I made 2 of these, and the plow got one, and the neighbor kid got the other. Not sure I want to build a 3rd, since I am sure the garbage man wants a shot at one.
I built this about 15 years ago and it looked grate. Mine was white with a gray field. Then the contractors who were changing the street lights backed into it with their work truck and snapped it in half at the base then backed over it and crushed it. I put up a plastic one in its place but now I need to make this one again.
Wonderful episode and a great one to watch and emulate in the Fall with the holidays coming. Here in coastal Aberdeen, WA, I built mine outta marine grade ply though and used exterior Sherwin-Williams Duration paint. Thanks Norm!
No. My dad was a professional painter and he used to spray all kinds of nasty stuff back in the day without a respirator and he never had any lung issues. If you have good ventilation, there is no risk. It's funny seeing how scared everyone is about everything these days. The worst are the idiots that wear a dust mask every time they cut a piece of wood.
Boy have things changed in a few years. If you still have a newspaper in your area, it is probably about 25% the size it used to be and mail is almost non-existent except for political campaign papers, a few ads and other junk. Not much real mail now. I think you could significantly downsize this build now.
@@chestnu1 I will never understand why anyone orders from amazon. It's all chinese junk. Real companies won't even honor warranties if you buy tools through amazon because of all the shenanigans the pull.
Actually, at least myself, I still get daily regular mail and we still get decent sized newspapers. Agreed that they aren't as big (well, more like aren't as thick) as they used to be, but paper mail still very much is a thing.
Woodworker's Journal, my favorite woodworking magazine is stopping production this November. Funny thing is that I have stopped subscribing to all magazines in the past couple of years (except Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding) as I get older.
Before we use any power tools, let’s talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule , than to wear these, safety glasses.

(19:16) Shouldn't you wear a respiratory when using any kind of aerosol paint?
