    I'm always amazed how Mr. Grusin can create music that is so heartbreaking and yet so uplifting at the same time! So sublime...

    This music brings me so many memories. I especially remember my mother. She loved the movie and the music. I remember when the film was shown on TV, she always managed to watch it. Then came the video cassettes. I heard this song so much that I fell in love too. But whenever I hear it, I immediately remember my mother with great nostalgia. Especially now that she is no longer with us.
    R.I.P. I miss you, mother.

      +trha2222 Yes... at the end there was much uncertainty in the film as to what exactly happened. But remember "there is always a plan"... right? (As J. Mason kept on saying, to certain queries by Joe Pendleton.) I think that Leo Farnsworth died when he was supposed to (or a very short, and insignificant, time thereafter), _as did the back-up quarterback_. (And Mr. J______ _was_ back-up QB again, after Pendleton retook 1st string in the body of Farnsworth... (that is)...!) They switched off positions of first string throughout the film, really. [I will have to get back when I recall the other QB's name.]
      We see Mason, as lead Angel, appealing to God at the end, that Pendleton might fill out his life as he wanted to... So then, the back-up QB did depart life on schedule... but Pendleton replaced him, evidently however in the same body. (i.e. one soul and associated spirit departed, and ... another soul and spirit entered: J. Pendleton's)... Issue was that Pendleton's past was erased, and he inherited a copy of the Back-up QB's past (whose film name I am forgetting)... So it was, at the conclusion to the film, that Pendleton did re-encounter Julie Christie _as Pendleton himself, yet now in the Back-up QB's body, and with the latter's memory_ (inherited with the body...so naturally Pendleton received his house, his bank account... his natural life), yet with the soul and spirit of Pendelton, _the man_. Sort of tricky there, but a brilliant, fun fantasy.
      The music was outstanding; the acting, especially by J. Christie, was excellent, and it is always fun to watch James Mason. Certainly Mr. Warren Beatty's warm-hearted genius pervades the film. This film was imo the summit of his career. ... and probably the summit of J. Christie's too: but she was so under-appreciated here.
      W. Beatty even could have performed a follow-up to the film... it might have been neat... They had the talent ready for it, surely. Perhaps no one thought of it. So then... all three personages (Farnsworth, QB Jarrett, and J. Pendleton) died as they were conclusively supposed to, _time-wise_. Therefore, it came about that Pendleton did not _ultimately_ exchange bodies (and lives, to a degree) with Leo Farnsworth, ... but rather with the back-up Quarterback for the Rams: his lifetime competitor.
      There was always a plan.... Yes, the Rams were going to win the Superbowl, and yes, Pendleton was going to help them. (As he said to the skeptical reporter at the beginning of the film!)

      You have excellent taste...I lost a couple of family members at the time of its release. Its message about death & destiny really put things in perspective for an 11 yr old football nut trying to understand life & its tragedies.

    • @JohnGLewis1964
      @JohnGLewis1964 8 років тому

      Bentom86 I'll have to watch the film again. The "back-up's" name -- more so actually a competitor for first string, and all year long -- was the starter (and I believe his last name began with J in the film) until coach Jack Warden, near the commencement of the film, and along with a birthday cake, brought Pendleton the _news_ that he was first string now...! Then, as Leo Farsnworth passed at the shooting at the well, Mr. J_______ retook starting position, and for the Super Bowl, but only to loose the position of starter (as well as his life), toward the very end of the game. (This precipitates the famous line from actor James Mason, "It was his time, Joe.").
      --------------------------------------------------------------
      This was a re-filming of "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941), which featured the inimitable Claude Rains as the lead Angel. What hurt that film was a weak ending, which would be duly rectified in "Heaven Can Wait". The latter featured real football commentators at the end, too...
      ------------------------------------------------------------
      I will watch again, and get back.... It was a little confusing at the end, but Pendleton was warned he would forget everything, and earlier, that the arrangement with Farnsworth was meant to be a temporary one.
      I also enjoyed very much how the composer altered the basic film score throughout, going from comical to romantic to ironic. ... Someone else commented that the film brought to the fore many liberal, civic, progressive ideas of the time into the screenplay.

      +John G. Lewis I hope I won't spoil your wish to see it again, but in the line of Rams QBs, Joe Pendleton had just beaten out Tom Jarrett to win back his starting job before his "untimely" tragic bike ride into that road tunnel. Then as Joe was reincarnated as the wealthy Leo Farnsworth, he bought the Rams & got himself in great enough shape to be QB again to play in the Super Bowl. But then Leo (or Joe) was shot dead by his assistant who was having an affair with Farnsworth's manipulating wife. Joe was reincarnated for a third & final time as Jarrett after he suffered a near-fatal injury in the Super Bowl. But one of the saddest scenes ever for me in a movie is when trainer Max Corkle (Jack Warden) realizes in the locker room that Joe is gone forever, but lives on as Jarrett. One of the best & underrated movies there ever was. And by the way, the real-life broadcaster in the locker room celebration is NBC Sports legendary play-by-play man Dick Enberg.

    • @JohnGLewis1964
      @JohnGLewis1964 8 років тому +1

      Bentom86 *Thank you.* Brilliant summarization. You did my work...! Yes, it was Mr. Tom Jarrett, who we never psychically truly see. And yes... Dick Enberg, one of NBC top sports announcers.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------
      I agree, I thought that the scene with Max Corkie (Jack Warden) was a little disappointing -- because of course he was the man supporting Joe through his various (three) phases. But there is tragedy and sorrow, disappointment, in life, after all.
      -------------------------------------------------------------
      I loved the close to the film, though (as I presume we all do). ...
      Joe Pendleton/Tom Jarrett: "Come on, I'll lead you though the dark; they've just turned off tunnel lighting. The door's right up here; there's nothing to be afraid of."
      Farnsworth's girlfriend (Julie Christie): (Once outside, on the playing field.) "What was that you said...?"
      Joe: "Well... I was just leading you out; there was not anything to be afraid of."
      (Julie Christie): "You're the Quarterback for the Rams."
      Joe: "Yes."
      (Julie Christie): (looking at him with amazement) ".... Yes, I would love to have a cup of coffee with you..."
      The two then walk across the darkening Colosseum.
      You know the film better than I do...! I apologize for the technical speak, but the last scene, the two walking across the field, can be seen as a metonym for the whole movie, as a summation of it, the two travelling into a darkening, unknown future. Fabulous conclusion.

    Chord at 0:48 = Grusin genius. He takes his melodies on a wild tour and somehow always makes both ends meet. As I listen I find myself thinking "how are you ever getting out of this mess, Dave" - and the way he solves the puzzle is always unexpected and overwhelming. Through-composed.

    • @JohnGLewis1964
      @JohnGLewis1964 8 років тому +1

    • @ElkundEklund
      @ElkundEklund 7 років тому +1

      From 1:27 to 3:24 there are so many stops I lost count where many composers would have run into a dead end and settled on a simple resolution by repeating a few bars ad nauseam and then getting out quick by reprising the chorus. Grusin is in a whole different ball game. The harmonic development is exquisite. I know no other composer who does this as well.

      Antonin did not play this. He's a pianist. This is Tom Scott on soprano.

    People criticize the selection of J. Christie for the leading female role here... Yet this is a silly, misplaced critique. W. Beatty was not appearing as himself to others in most places of the film, but rather ... as L. Farnesworth: a multi-millionaire probably in his 50s. Julia was loosing some of her youthful patina at this time... Therefore, a 30 some Julia with a 50 odd Farnsworth makes a lot of sense. And then she brought along her formidable acting skills. She was great in the part and made the film, even a Fantasy, very believable. Few people realize this, imo. I believe, indeed, that she deserved to be nominated for Best Actress.

      I enjoyed seeing this movie in college! Adored it then at twenty, and now at fifty - eight I still am!

      She was perfect for the part...older and more mature than a twenty something that they really needed to create the drama of those scene that has such profound consequences......
