Love Unlimited Orchestra ~ Love's Theme 1973 Disco Purrfection Version

  • This was the very first disco song that hit #1 on the pop chart and broke out in the clubs because radio would not touch it, proving the power of the DJ. People ran to the record stores for this one and that forced radio to include it on their playlists. I feel intoxicated, surrounded by all those ethereal strings and the different levels of instruments like bass, and the wah wah guitars magically shaking my booty! Freedom BABY! It would be a few months before the double whammy of "Rock Your Baby" and "Rock The Boat" would cement the future of disco on radio, but Barry White got there first with this one. Some critics have written this off as "fluff", "nothing substantial", and my favorite "the cheesy soundtrack to a porn movie"....nevertheless it became a defining moment in the evolution of disco. It was written for Love Unlimited as an instrumental introduction to their song "Under The Influence Of Love" ...the run time of the two songs came to 8:19 giving DJ's a chance to breathe since mixing three minute singles together took up all of their time. The production values on this one were sterling, sorry I cant say the same for "Under The Influence of Love"...the song sounds harsher than it is due to the lack of the abundantly sugary strings like its predecessor. I like it though, a bit rougher and tougher. In any case, the girls first got together in 1969 and became backup singers for Barry White productions. Soon, Barry took a shine to one of them named Glodean and the next thing you know, they are married. Love Unlimited did have some decent R&B hits like "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love" in 1972, the #1 R&B hit, "I Belong To You" and even recorded a vocal version of "Love's Theme" for the same LP "In Heat", but to no avail. By 1980 the musical magic was gone and the women went their separate ways. They follow a grand pop tradition of having a hit song on their album that they did not do vocals for and thus no credit. Another example of this phenomenon is "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles and Co. It was a big hit as an instrumental, but the vocal version tanked. I dug up the single and gave it a listen..the song was not focused. It was like the vocals got in the way of this fantastic groove. Oh well.. I thought it was time to extend this one, I hope you like it.

January 1974 I worked my last shift in the steel mill. The next morning I got on a bus to the Pittsburgh airport to move to California. The temperature was close to zero degrees. My brother picked me up at the San Francisco airport and it was a glorious day driving over the Bay bridge. It was then that this song came on the radio. Was feeling like I never had before. Driving over the bay on a glorious sunny day and listening to this song. It was my start to a whole new life.

When I was a kid and my Mom had her home stereo turned on and this song started playing on the radio, I would always run from wherever I was to lay down next to the stereo speakers and close my eyes and just enjoy the melody. This song will always remind me of my Mom. She has been gone over 35 years, I miss her so very much.

Now, in 2023, we have been married for over 38 years. I still don't know what I did to get this beautiful woman, with a heart of gold, into my life. Maybe she saw me with my mouth hanging open and felt sorry for me. 😂. Great tune, fantastic memories 👌

Oh my. I hurt for you. I introduced my father to this tune many years ago and he just loved it...and then died in 2014. I still miss him seven years on, so can only remember the sadness you are dealing with right now. It's still there and always will be, but the sharp edge is dulled a bit with time too. I hope you will experience the same.
All my best to see you through these terrible times. Maybe it will help, if only a tiny bit. And otherwise, if I may be so bold, do remember this tune literally SOARS upward with hope and happiness. I think your mom would still want to give this gift to you, as my father would wish to share it we me. We are both sad...but lucky to have had them too.

This is my favorite song in life! It's smooth, it's mellow, it's soothing. It makes me think of happy times, when all of my family was still alive; when we had trees on the block, when there was still a thing called community. It gets to my soul and marrow. This may not make sense, but then again, some things just can't be explained!

This is a masterpiece by Barry White, right along with Isaac Haye's Theme from Shaft. Both should be played to young folk, especially young black folk, so that they can hear what excellent and professional music sounds like. When I hear one, and think of the other. Barry White and Isaac Hayes could do it all, ie, sing, arrange, produce, and put together an orchestra. Absolutely awesome. Check out both songs.

I dedicate this song to my dad!!! Who's going on 83 years old!!! I had a great daddy!!! I'm 53 yrs old, and I can still remember my dad taking me to the Rialto Theater here in Atlanta to see Godzilla vs Megalon!!!! Lol. I remember this song playing before the movie started. He also would, believe it or not, take me to the zoo every time I asked him! I don't remember him ever turning me down! He has early stage of dementia; my daddy cries sometimes because he can't find things because he forgets where he puts them. Wow, this is tough. I love him! He saved my life once from drowning, he bought my first and second car! But back to the zoo! He would hold me on his shoulders as I looked at Willie B!
It was just me and him doing these things! He saved my life again at Six Flags!! I got on the parachutes with him, and I slid
down under the bar. He said that his eyes were close, because we were so high, and he said when he opened them, I was hanging on to the bar that was supposed to be across my lap. He pulled me back up. I can go on and on, but I just wanted to dedicate this masterpiece of a song to my great and wonderful dad!!!
I think of him and us when I hear this!! Great memories of us together in the 70s! I never felt unloved by him still to this day!! He still tries to look after me!!! What a good man!!!! I love you dad!!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!!

I was the only one on that long, straight highway and I had never seen so many stars or breathed fresher air. This song was playing on the tape deck. Where it's such a cad's car, for a laugh my dad had put a Barry White CD in the changer. I came to a road closed sign, turned around and drove back on a lovely bit of empty road in the rare Feburary sunshine, and this track came on. I knew it would all be short lived because of the current events unfolding, so made the most of it. I've never been more relaxed.

This is easily one of the greatest and most soaring instrumentals in popular music. It evokes romance, excitement, passion, youth, and yes... it feels almost celestial and sadly removed from our current cynical and cell-phone-addicted times in which people do not understand the simple truth that they are only here in this world for a short while and that hatred for those different from oneself regardless of race, political persuasion , culture, sexual orientation, etc. is a self-defeating fast track to swift ageing, bad health, bad karma, and bad vibes. And yes... the dance floor in the late '70s welcomed one and all; the times were by no means perfect, but there was not so much hate, unhappiness, division, and social unrest in the air. The joy in this track says it all. God willing, we can bring that spirit back. You won't hear a track on the radio that even comes close to the majesty and beauty of this gorgeous instrumental.

@@tyronejackson-jordan6740 You're welcome. "Love's Theme" falls into an elite category of records that I have an instant physical reaction to that I can only describe as a burst of beautiful light filling my heart and spirit the minute I hear it. I realize that sounds like some sort of New Age mumbo-jumbo, but it is absolutely true, and I've experienced it from the time I first heard the record. It is that magical to me. I'm happy to hear others feel the same way. I have had a similar experience to a few other records as well; one of those is "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand" by Diana Ross. I hadn't heard it in a long time, and one day I heard it again in some random, unexpected manner and I felt an electrical sensation of pure awe in my body, and I thought "This record is divine. This woman has had bigger hits, but this one? This one will never die as long as there are humans on this planet. It came straight from the Source."

I'll never forget when I first heard this song, It raised the hair on my arms, and I danced by myself.. It is THE PERFECT BLEND a symphony orchestra and a funk tune.. It set a standard that was followed by many artist. The melody just soars from place to place. It is so infectious and majestic.. I'd sit by the turntable, lift the needle and restart instantly. Barry White honed his producing and arranging skills for other artists before he decided to step into the spotlight. It truly is one of the most beautiful songs made in the 20th century.

I dont know why and really dont understand what has happened in the USA since the 1970s and why it is so divided now, it wasnt always so obvious in the 1970s ands thats from my own personal observations since I was there in the late 1970s. Doesnt make sense that a country that produces music that obviously Unites so many different types of people, can still have these "stark" racial divisions in the "advanced society" of the 21st century, just doesnt make any sense to me at all.
