This is a decent video and I'm glad Russell's behaviour is being talked about, but I have some feedback. Overdoing the visual puns is a fairly common problem on youtube, but it's often distracting and, given the topic of this particular video, often comes across as callous and, honestly, a bit crass.
I totally agree with that since it overshadows the message the creator is communicating. I'm glad they're considering it while making their next video.
If I can give a critique, you should really keep the videos to clips that directly deal with the subject. The information is great but it feels a little disjointed when there are clips from productions that have nothing to do with Russell.
@@eh2396curious why you think it’s unacceptable to provide constructive criticism to a creator. Also curious why you think it’s okay to be horrendously rude to someone who’s just trying to provide helpful information about their experience. Honestly GFY.
I think the fact that these ALIST actors were willing to put up with this shows that this type of behavior is probably more common than is known and actors are often treated this way. Russell Crowe has stated this several times that "you're treated like shit, but you get paid well" . And these are people who love what they do and are afraid of losing it. Yes like it does with other successful directors, take Bryan Singer, who is guilty of heinous abuse but got away with all of it. Hollywood is all about profit in the end, even though they love to virtue signal their superior morals
There are some actors who'd want to make a great movie by butting heads with the director rather than having a good time. But this director could easily be arrested for assault.
It is extremely important to note that TONS of people went to see his movies JUST because of Jennifer Lawrence. She was just out of the hunger games craze and us superfans were building whole ass blogs just to figure out the best ways to support her career. We bought those tickets for HER and her only, often being too young to even have interest in the movies themselves. Silver linings playbook was an example: I saw it at the cinema with my best friend and we were.. 13? 14? Did not like it, Jennifer was great but way too young for the part of the "disgraced widow", the male gaze was suffocating, the plot was mediocre and we left just being happy about having supported our favorite actress. Its very upsetting how people can’t view the people in their entertainment as real people with feelings. You wouldn’t tolerate abuse at your workplace so don’t tolerate it in the film industry.
Oh yeah? People in fact do tolerate it. Coming from a creative profession as well, I’m thinking of one boss in particular who regularly belittled and cursed at staff, threw and smashed things, and pounded POUNDED the desk to the point objects thereon became airborne. His passing into eternity was not uncelebrated.

David O. Russell can’t even produce results from all this bad behavior. His films are pretty mid Say what you will about Hitchcock, the man could actually make great films. Kubrick was truly gifted (and by the way, he wasn’t so much abusive as he was very demanding and kind of cold); Kubrick never actually had a screaming tantrum where he called a woman the C word over and over and got two inches from her face
Yeah hitchcock and kubkick might be dicks but at least they made classic film after classic film. Almost non of the russel films are remembered they just came and went like shallow products, despite the good reviews. So yeah russel thinks he is top shit when he barelly has any author vision, even shymalan has more vision than this bozo.
Kubrick's a bad example too. He drove Shelly Duvall insane. Abusing her to the point that her hair started falling out on the set of The Shining and her mental health never recovered. He'd even advise the set workers not to have sympathy for her.
I’m going to agree with the rest of the comments and bring up the visuals are distracting and detract from the video. The other issue is you’re interlacing actual footage from the topic you’re referencing and then all of a sudden show a different movie or show featuring the same people which seems directly misleading.
So glad someone made a video talking more about this, I knew it was terrible but didn't know the whole story of reports, thanks for bringing attention to this guy's disgusting behaviour, it cannot be accepted
As an actor, myself, I would not care to work with a director like Russell. I won't audition for a part, if I know the director is like that. I prefer there to be little drama on the set other than what's supposed to be shot. It is completely unnecessary for a director to abuse his cast and crew, and it's remarkable they can do a good job under such conditions. A younger me would likely have just taken the abuse, but today, I wouldn't tolerate it. Life's too short.
When someone told me Silver Linings Playbook won an Oscar - I laughed. It was so mediocre. It was basically Garden State but with added self-seriousness. I can't imagine what it must felt like for Lily Tomlin having to go to HIM and apologize. You'd think some of those high profile men on set would be able to sort him out, but I guess they didn't want to get in his line of fire. I will say though, while some actors like Amy Adams couldn't handle his style of directing, J-Law is clearly made of tougher stuff and potentially thrives in an intense work environment, like some of the other actors who still sing his praises. Hollywood is very weird people, some actors and crew will put up with just about anything.

great video but showing almost nothing but movie scenes for footage is kinda distracting. showing something more relevant to what's being said in the voice over is better.
Please try to make a video using a director's own footage without using footage from other directors. Yes, David O Russell is an abusive filmmaker, but try not to use shots from other director's films to make your point.
Now I wanted to know so I Google it: If a choking person can cough forcefully, let the person keep coughing. Coughing might naturally remove the stuck object. If a person can't cough, apply first aid. Meaning that you could die in any situation but more certainly when you can't cough.

Good video! I have been hearing about the tales of working with DO Russel for a good long while, and I've wondered about just why he draws in so many actors after such disgusting actions happening on repeat. I think the reality is that he obviously has talent on his style that really appeals to actors and executives, and so many are fine with pushing their bounderies- not realizing O Russel does NOT respect those boundaries. Dealing with the long term trauma and fallout of his behaviour is not worth it, especially as accomplished as many of these actors are.
I stopped respecting this dude when the Lily Tomlin footage came out. Everyone made all the excuses for him, which are the same excuses lots of men get when they act like megalomaniacal bastards. This guy needed some Klaus Kinski.
I am unaware of the reference, what did he do?
@@crotchman Took no shit and was a total badass. Read his autobiography, it is jaw dropping what his early life was like.
@@crotchman Klaus Kinski was a great actor, absolute legend on the screen and a total bad guy off the screen. He always butted heads with directors, especially Werner Herzog( with whom he made some great films). Kinski was so troublesome, that it's said that Herzog thought about killing him. Also Kinski was abusive to his children too. He was really crazy, I mean he was literally insane.
Or Jon Peters
I can't believe he's got another film in the works as well
what is it?
@@metalheadzaki It's called 'Super Toys'. It's set in the 1970s and stars Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen
@@matthewvivian7235 thanks
@@matthewvivian7235 Well, if nothing else, at least his films, no matter how mediocre the scripts are, tend to be rescued by stellar casts and Keke and Sacha are nothing but stellar thespians.
One year later and he still has movies in development 😑 ridiculous
I like the commentary but the clips make no sense. Just filler. Dont add to the video essay.
It's impressive that such a medíocre director can be given so many chances, silver lining was such an awful movie.
dude, great script, but please the editing is awful... cut the clips from the hundred different movies you use its incredibly distracting... for memes yeah sure, but other than that it really hurt the watching experience
Great video - deep enough and not too long. very cool, keep it coming! one thing I would point out, as I'm not familiar with the Russell's work so well, I was confused sometimes if a the b-roll is from his movie you are talking about or just for illustration 😅 may be it's just me though
I remember following his career since the production of Three Kings and just being confused how he still got work. Thank you for summarizing his failures as a decent human.
i think many were so focused on finding sexual abuse that we slipped on the important thing about him, he abuses equally no matter class or gender.
Yeah you are right
Flash forward to today, and we're finally "cancelling" this guy? I guess, We as a society, draw the line at only certain types of abuse, when abuse is abuse.
I Heart Huckabees is my favorite of his films, but it's been cribbed from so many other better foreign films, to the point that I just don't see an artist in this guy.
I think that actors think it’s right to be somewhat tortured or made to feel uncomfortable by directors, but it’s not right. There shouldn’t be any place for that.
I watched Ámsterdam and Black Adam and those were the only 2 times I have felt like I deserved my money back 😂
