I respect Doug Liman taking accountability for Jumper not being successful critically. Nowadays directors/actors blame the fanbase, instead of admitting they could do better

In a poetical way he's right. Jumper is one of those movies that everyone kinda liked but didn't have that.... Thing. You know what I'm talking about. Some movies have it and others don't have it.
Its more of a movie where everyone is secretly obsessed but never want to talk about it in public kind of movie. I know I did. @@TheFloorface ANDREW! ANDREW STOP PLEEEASE!… ANDREW! DONT MAKE ME DO THIS!! When I’m alone and like playing video games, I’ll find a reason to scream “Andrew don’t make me do this!”
It's an easy watch, but I don't think I'd want to watch it again. I think it had problems with the villain and explaining his agenda. I needed some real reasons of why he was after Jumpers. I don't know the books - didn't even know it was based on anything, so those might have a better story. The family drama was also a bit underdeveloped - even if some was left for later, it lacked foundations. As it was it's a decent action flick, you shouldn't think too much about.
Dude my brother and I must have watched this hundreds of times on DVD. It just made it feel like such a cool superpower, and imo laid the groundwork for Chronicle which I also loved. Grounded superpower media is incredible.
I not only remember that film, it was one of my favorite action films with fantasy/superpower theme. Also, I never understood why Hayden was disliked as an actor because of the SW prequels. In my opinion he played a young Anakin VERY well. Exactly what you's expect from an immature and obsessed young man. You could dislike the character but I think that the performance was flawless.
Yeah, george lucas is just not the best writer. Great storyteller and world builder, just not the best dialog. If you watch Hayden's performance when there's no dialog, especially ROTS, it's amazing, I see and feel the conflict and and the emotion of Aniken's turn to Vader. Sorry for the rant.
DUDE I have felt this way for so long, like why would someone blame the actor for the character acting that way. He literally just did as the writers and directors asked
honestly, I like this genre of superpower movies rather than the superhero style. They seem more realistic, in the way as any person who has super ability will do
Jumper has one of my favorite depictions of teleporting ever. Being able to jump somewhere through a photo was unique and kept the "needing to see where you were going" even if it was a stretch.
@JoshuaAdim jumpers have to lay eyes on the location first. Remember he asks to use the bank's bathroom? It's so he can see inside the vault while it's open, the guard walks him past it. Pyramid is easy, just stand at the bottom at look at the top where you want to go. So yes, technically they don't have to actually stand in that spot, but they have to physically see it in person first.
Yeah with a stupid female all powerful lead and a stupid white male as the arc enemy.. I really don't want any remake in this era until the wokeness is dead.
I’ve seen Jumper many times. Yes, the conflict is undercooked. But they sold me so much on the idea of teleportation! This imo is the base of what a movie about superpowers should achieve: “Damn! I’d love to be able to do that!” The scene of him on a Sphinx, of them jumping a car through the streets, of him using it in his mundane life stuck with me for life! I always loved Nightcrawler, and this one is not even blue!
You'd probably love "Red Colonels" where some of the protagonists used their teleport device to steal a submarine to use it as a generator for their Moon underground base.
Personally I think the adults at the time didn't like it but the entire younger generation loved it and sadly kids do not have money and I only think that bc every time I talk about jumper to an older person they have no idea what im talking about but almost every single person around my age (23) knows and liked the movie
@@Mystical_Deendid you see push? Jumper is a cool movie, zero complaints. But push, man push is just spectacular. Easily one the most underrated movies of all time.
I'm sure a significant part of that 15% RT score is just that Hayden Christensen hate from the prequels. Unfortunately the actors seem to always get the vast majority of the blame for poorly received movies, no matter whether their performance was actually the main issue or not.

I remember trying to "jump", concentrating to where I wanna teleport (even thinking of places with no people so if I succeed no one would know LOL) then my friend is watching while chanting "Lava" and "Volcano" to throw me off and I got scared that I might teleport in a mouth of a volcano straight to lava..

I’m really glad that Doug Liman was able to bounce back from this with Edge of Tomorrow as that’s easily one of my favourite films! American Made is also pretty fun too.

Rewatched this movie this year. Ooh boy did I have a good time. I love this movie's take on teleporting. Wish the movie mad enough impact to warrant a sequel. Well atleast we got impulse despite the drop in quality
I found impulse to be soo shit and an insult to this movie.... I saw it years ago and the only thing I still remember about it is the main character constantly going... " I can't deal with this right now". Like girl... you can freaking teleport!!! Stop being hormonal and go figure it out how that shit works!!! The teenage drama was too much for me.
The sequel was turned into the UA-cam Original series "Impulse." In the books, the main character from "Impulse" was the daughter of the main character from "Jumper."
See I knew I wasn't crazy thinking that there was a UA-cam original show one of the first UA-camr original shows to come out and it was based off another book in the series so thank you for confirming for me
You'd be surprised how many people dont know about IMPULSE. Damn shame. It had some points that needed to be addressed but it overall was enjoyable. I'll eat ANYTHING up thats JUMPER-verse related. IMPULSE wasn't so much a sequel to JUMPER I dont think. They just took the name of the 3rd novel book (Impulse) and used it for the UA-cam series. Although the main teleporter is a female in IMPULSE like David Rice' Daughter in the IMPULSE book, it wasn't related to JUMPER the movie. I was ULTRA bummed that they left that series on a cliffhanger. Still am...😔

Dude. This movie was one of my favourites. I got the dvd and would watch it multiple times a year. I still watch it every year or two. Suuuuch an underrated film. I wish they made a sequel.

In fact, the creator's own understanding of how RT works also doesn't contribute to their analysis; just because it was passively mentioned doesn't mean it needs to be explained. The video's purpose was to critique the film and it's creators. Still, much appreciated to have it explained to the viewers. Just serves more like a fun fact, if anything.
Jumper was one of my favorite movies and had the best portrayal of teleportation powers. Had better CGI than A LOT of the new Marvel/DC movies. The first movie ended in a such a way that I thought it was just a one and done movie with just enough loose ends for the writers to make a sequel and enough conclusiveness to wrap things up right there. I had no idea there was a whole series of books already written. I honestly can't believe this movie was technically a flop.
Visually yes, but story and characters just felt … empty and plane. I watched it twice, just to make sure, but it just is really bad writing. I watched "Impulse", the "Jumper"-series, and it has great characterdevelopment and writing, just not for the main character. In the end you just hate her and are glad, that it is finally over.
The VFZ team needs major credits for allowing such a massive jump forward in how teleportation animation is handled. And for anyone who wants to see what a person with such powers is truly capable of, the fully recognize these abilities in "The Magicians".
8:12 what’s ironic is that people’s comment about him being wooden or unemotive in the prequels is because he’s supposed to be. That’s his character. Anakin believes being a Jedi means suppressing your true emotions, which is why he absolutely explodes during his showdown with Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith.
Bad excuse that doesn't even hold up in-universe. How many of the other Jedi act like he does? Hmm? Oh, none of them? Not even Yoda?! Come up with some other cope that makes more sense. I won't say it was all him, cuz directing and script are large parts of it, but yeah, his acting was not good.
@@Egesleanall of the Jedi act pretty stoic and unemotional, the difference with anakin is that he was already a boy when he joined the order, he'd already built up some angst from living in slavery and then leaving his mother behind still in chains. That's why the council initially says that he's too old. The other Jedi were raised to not show their emotions and the order is all that they know, Anakin in episode 2 is an emotionally traumatized teenager who is only pretending to be stoic by constantly burying those emotions. And when his emotions do come out, he doesn't know how to express them properly, hence why he's so cringe around Padme, and why he comes off so wooden. His stability is a mask and his instability is something he doesn't understand and no one around him can really relate with him to help him. So, yeah, the performance fits perfectly, Hayden Christensen played the character very well. Whether you like the character is another story, but that's not the actor's fault.
@@andrewsilva9721 See, this is much better cope, and I'm actually onboard with it to a fair degree, but I still say his acting wasn't that good. You can see that in other roles he's played, he's just not that good of an actor. He's far from the worst and not bad, just nothing special or anything to write home about. But as I said before, script and direction had a lot to do with how poorly the character was received then, and now.
@@EgesleanHayden Christensen is a great actor. I have never seen him do a bad or mediocre job. In every movie I have enjoyed his interpretation of the character. So I simply can't see what you're taking about.

Loved this movie - because of how well the teleportation was. This became and still is my favorite super power. That and the slice of life type vibe at the beginning where he gets the money and just chills.
I adored Jumper, Push & I am number four. I have seen them all multiple times, read the books, remember them well and was devastated when each one never made it past the first movie!
Daang first time I learned that Hayden suffered multiple injuries on set no wonder he doesn't want to come back for a sequel and do any more movies that require stunts etc. Good for him.
I remember liking this movie so much, I read all three books right after. Didn’t even know there was a fourth one. I was straight obsessed with the idea… not so much about the series though, but I really enjoyed it!
I had the good fortune to meet Hayden Christensen at Fan Expo in Toronto. He was a real gentleman and he gave my Mom a big hug and thanked her for visiting him. He is not only a great actor, but he is a great person too.
I totally agree: great concept, good first half, but rushed second half. Ironically, in times when we desperately need new concepts, this piece of gold is being wasted.
Throughout a lot of my life, I've been able to like movies others don't because I enjoy concepts. When you say, "Great concept, bad execution," there's so many films like this. When I was younger there were so many films like that that I loved. But nowadays I'm less forgiving of it. I still enjoy some movies when I can see the concept there, but if the execution fails hard enough I just feel so betrayed. It's even more sad when you realize a big reason why this happens is because the studios don't take a seat and keep their mouths shut. Jumper, Push and Wanted are still 3 great concepts and I loved them a lot. Nowadays it's all about comic book superheroes, but I wish we could get more movies like those 3. Thanks for the nostalgia. ❤
Push & Jumper are my two pre-marvel "superhero" movies. Movies that feel like superhero movies, but refreshingly avoid a lot of the modern issues I have with that genre
Especially at that particular time when he was overweight and at the height of his addiction and grieving his best friend. Honestly, I find it too hard to believe. He turned down multiple movie roles after 8 mile because he didn't have the best experience on that film. He turned down so many that people started asking 50 cent to try and convince him
Both Jumper and In Time's concepts sparked a love for sci-fi in me that's stuck ever since. This movie also serves as proof that teleporting is the best superpower, hands down.
When I first saw Jumper I didn't realize it was part of a series of books, so I felt it was ended okay. Watching Impulse brought me back to remembering how much I liked Jumper, and I do agree that a TV series allowed a better build up of characters. How she discovers her ability was both shocking and incredibly believable, even more so than the drowning in Jumper. But let's look at Push, another movie with a similar feel that ended with a hint of a sequel, but has been far too long to revisit it with the same people. Maybe a reboot? And I hate reboots and loved Chris Evans in it (first time I ever saw him), but newer tech and proper funding for a less-B movie feel would allow us to explore that world a lot better. Maybe even tell a more complete story with a longer single movie.
There were so many neat little moments in this movie. I think one of my favorite parts was when he's sitting on the couch, a few feet from the remote, and he teleports over instead of getting up. I love dumb little bits like that.
As a VFX artist i think this movie nailed one particoUlar shot rapresenting teleport: when Griffin charges Nolan after mentioning his mother. Pure power.
I have a shameful confession about this film; I convinced my friends to go see Jumper instead of There Will Be Blood. I know, I know! But I went to this film purely on the strength of Doug Liman, who is a pretty solid director. Liked all his films, but God knows what happened here. There Will Be Blood is great tho
There was a time in Germany during the 2010s where this movie was on prime time televison once a month it felt like, so I'd say many people who watched TV during these days should remember this movie lol
I enjoyed this movie and loved it as a child, but on a recent rewatch, many issues stood out to me. The film was too short, and the camera cuts between scenes were too quick, making it difficult to fully engage with the story. The movie never fully explains what happens to the dad or provides any resolution for Griffin’s character, leaving huge plot holes. Also, the idea that Paladins and Jumpers have existed for centuries feels too far-fetched. You would expect human society to have discovered their existence by now, especially after seeing David and Griffin teleport-fighting across the world in broad daylight in front of numerous witnesses. It’s just not believable that they could remain hidden for so long.
The problem is ALWAYS Liman. The simple fact is that he’s always been an egomaniacal person. He needs his hand held so he gets films done. There’s a reason he wasn’t even asked to do the second Bourne film. Or to do another Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Letting him have CREATIVE CONTROL means you’ll never finish your film. Or, if it does end, it’s like this, rushed & left in shambles. He “directed” great films before bc he was forced to do things that served the film, NOT bc he is a good director. He doesn’t need to films to ever finish either bc he’s from a super-wealthy background. The Hayden backlash wasn’t earned tbh. ROTS was actually pretty good. Ppl should’ve judged him on how his acting got better. He just got saddled with poor direction in this film, as well. Nobody gave Portman any guff or anyone else, just him.
I just wish I could use that skill to get the remote. I can't tell you how many times I just stuck watching something dumb because a tv remote wasn't with in reach.
I liked Jumper, had it on DVD. But I have to admit I didn't know anything about what makes a good film back then and haven't watched it since. I might be more critical if I re-watched it today. For the Rotten Tomatoes score, note that critics score is calculated differently from audience. Audience is how you would think - 1-10 score. But critics' is based on ~ would you recommend this film to a stranger ~ thumbs up or down. So it's possible that 85% of critics felt it was just below the threshold of "good enough" to recommend - meaning if they were scored like the audience was - critics may have given it an average around 5 out of 10 (I assume below 5, like in dating, is the no go threshold).
I've watched this movie so many times, and while I've absolutely noticed the glaring flaws with it as I've gotten older, I still consider it my favourite movie.

I will never forget this movie. I have always loved it. Don't know why but teleportation is almost never used in superhero movies because it's to op. But this movie did teleportation great.
when this movie first came out i thought it was pretty good and i wondered why it got cancelled, then i few years ago i discovered the books this movie is based off of and now i understand exactly why it was cancelled, this movie completely ignored the source material, the only details that made it from the book into this movie is the character names and teleportation…there are 4 books in the main Jumper series and they’re an absolute must read
@@mario.gaines I never read the book so it doesn't matter to me

I think it had problems with the villain and explaining his agenda. I needed some real reasons of why he was after Jumpers. I don't know the books - didn't even know it was based on anything, so those might have a better story.
The family drama was also a bit underdeveloped - even if some was left for later, it lacked foundations.

Me too, I loved the prequels more than the old trilogy, except jar jar.

Jumper has one of my favorite depictions of teleporting ever. Being able to jump somewhere through a photo was unique and kept the "needing to see where you were going" even if it was a stretch.
They couldn't jump to a place they hadn't been. They would take the photos themselves to help jog their memory later if they wanted to return.
No, they had to be there before.
@@Majin_Dabura how did he jump inside a bank vault or the top of a pyramid
@JoshuaAdim jumpers have to lay eyes on the location first. Remember he asks to use the bank's bathroom? It's so he can see inside the vault while it's open, the guard walks him past it. Pyramid is easy, just stand at the bottom at look at the top where you want to go. So yes, technically they don't have to actually stand in that spot, but they have to physically see it in person first.
Actually the whole movie has a rather intel agency vibe to it. I personally believe it is not entirely entertainment and based on reality.
This definitely needs a remake...and THEN a sequel.

I’ve seen Jumper many times. Yes, the conflict is undercooked. But they sold me so much on the idea of teleportation!

He's far from the worst and not bad, just nothing special or anything to write home about. my friends and I loved this so much back in college. after exiting the theater we would jump around mimicking the teleportation lol

I never new about Impulse until you mentioned it. Its on Amazon Prime. I'm watching it today. ***THANK YOU!***
To be honest the second book wasn't really all the good, so I am glad that the movie wasn't more than one

There were so many neat little moments in this movie. I think one of my favorite parts was when he's sitting on the couch, a few feet from the remote, and he teleports over instead of getting up. I love dumb little bits like that.

I love Jumper, I wish it had a trilogy
Jumper, I've rewatched this so many times. Had alot of elements that blended well together.
Well Portman has movies where she was good. Christianson doesnt
This movie was really good, and deserves sequel
2:03 wtf is he smoking lmfao thank you for that clip 🤣🤣
😂
Congratulations on hitting 1 Million Views!🎉🎉🎉
5:00 Rotten Tomatoes is not very reliable
I've watched this movie so many times, and while I've absolutely noticed the glaring flaws with it as I've gotten older, I still consider it my favourite movie.
I’m so curious out of all the movies you’ve done with this which one would you have wanted to see a sequel to the most
honestly probably either jumper or the Lone Ranger. even though the Lone Ranger wasn't great I'm a big western fan so I would have loved to see another
Personally the sequel to the first book wasn't that good (to the first book). And just felt an pointless add on to the first book.
This movie BEGS for a sequel. The concept is brilliant but the execution? Average at best. Fingers crossed 🤞🏾
As someone who read the sequel to the book series it wasn't that good and could live without it.
Man, I discovered your channel not too long ago, but I've watched almost all of your videos, they are great. And just recently I was thinking about other movies like the ones you've already talked about and Jumper came to my mind. You're awesome!
Thank you !
I rewatch Jumper every now and then. Good film and it is a genuine shame that we didn't get a sequel. Out of I Am Number Four and Push, Jumper holds up the best in my opinion. But all those movies have a special place in my heart.
